The BEST way to Crystal Mill, but is it too spicy?

  • Crystal Mill is an iconic Colorado historic structure that has two ways of getting to it. Lead King Basin is the more challenging FUN way. This is our first part of what we are calling the Ultimate Colorado Overland Trip. We start from Marble CO with this fun way (very spicy) to Crystal Mill. We use a stock Jeep Wrangler, FJ Cruiser, and two Jeep Cherokees so you can have a better idea if you're up for it. We believe many stock offroad model vehicles (stock wranglers, stock Broncos, stock TRD off-road Toyotas, etc) will be fine, but this Lead King Basin Trail guide shows you the trail so you can decide for yourself. Always use your judgement when off-roading as trails change and safe off-roading is as much about the driver as it is about the vehicle.

    More information on our Ultimate Colorado Overland Trip:
    This is Part ONE of a Three Episode Overland Trip from Marble, CO to Aspen, CO that Drew is editing (so it'll be great). Part 1 is Lead King Basin to Crystal Mill. Part 2 is the Devil's Punchbowl known as one of the most dangerous Colorado Trails. Part 3 is Pearl Pass and that was a wild high mountain adventure. Other trails that may make appearance into the videos are Paradise Divide and Aspen Ski Mountain. We ended up doing a bonus day and took Taylor Pass from Aspen to Buena Vista and that video is posted. I have a full writeup of this whole trip posted on Colorado off-road trails ( groups/color...) if you want a written out guide.

    Huge shout out to Drew who edited this and to the crew who filmed this with me! We have a backlog of videos filmed that Drew is helping me get edited. He’ll be editing the whole trip from Marble to Aspen including Lead King basin (this one), Devil’s Punchbowl/Schofield Pass, and Pearl Pass. Give him some time, but we’d love to hear what you guys want included for those trails as he’s working on them now. If you want to see some cool Colorado trails, subscribe as we’ll be pumping them out as fast as our jobs will allow. I think we have 25 filmed that need to be edited.

    We're losing more trails by the day due to misuse and abuse. The back country is so easily accessed now, which is great, yet the few who choose to abuse it dictate the fate of access for all. The mill was spray painted/'tagged', carved up, bits broken off and carted away, used as a toilet and trashed by the abusive few. Now a sad part of its very history is the way it was misused. Hate to see it but grateful to the owners/caretakers for closing the trail and saving what is left of our heritage and CO history.

      I think the issue is the mill is so easily accessed… I mean this was the harder route yet it was easy. I’d think most people with an AWD SUV could probably get there by the easy way (we didn’t drive it tho). I’m a big fan of kids, but my guess is teens did the vandalism at night, not off-roaders. I could be wrong, but it takes some time for us to develop the right reasoning to understand why vandalizing the mill is big deal.

      Erosion is a result of normal use and is inevitable. It's not that the planet isn't worth saving, it's just that it can't be used without wear and tear. Its a living entity and like all living things here in this physical universe will eventually die but mankind will out live it and is destined to leave one day. So enjoy yourself and join the masses and scuff up a road or two and don't fret if you dropped your water bottle on the way!

    Definitely added to my list!
    Regarding airing down on dry dirt: when combined with 4WD, whether it's hi or lo, you're actually helping to slow down washboard creation! When you get over rocks and the like and land back on dirt, there is less dirt kicked up. Because there is less tire spin due to having better grip, you help avoid making ruts bigger, and preserve the trail! The only downside is for anyone eating your dust.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  21 день тому

      You’ll enjoy it. About airing down, I wish we could get real data on this. My background is in science, and I believe washboards are created by 2WD, fast driving, and big tires. Airing down to decrease washboard formation doesn’t make sense as you are increasing the tires impact to the terrain. In reality, I believe 2WD and going fast are the biggest contributors to washboard formation.

    • @supacheef1

      @@coloradomallcrawlersespecially 2wd trucks. The lack of weight in the back end allows them to "bounce" more, which adds to the tiny amounts of wheel spin

  • @off-roadingexplained8417

    Dewey, in your defense of higher tire pressures, tires have more load (vertical, anyway ) then theyll ever have when they're off road. Youll put all the weight on three tires or even two tires all the time. Especially if someone is driving a Cherokee Trailhawk like me with less flex.
    I never go below 22 unless i have a problem. You also lose side hill stability when the pressure is too low. Im usually at 26 on trails and 26-29 street. (And that's exactly what the load inflation tables tell me to do). I don't slip much at 26 psi and it rides well at that pressure. I agree, why go lower if you dont have to ?

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  10 місяців тому

      I read a lot of books on off-roading and they have always said to use it for sand, mud, snow, and slick rocky conditions. I’ve stuck to that as I don’t need to do it for comfort. I was just reading a magazine (tread I think) that echoed my airing down philosophy upon skimming it. I haven’t had time to dig into the article yet. I really don’t care what people do tho… but I think I’ve proven that if someone says you need to air down for traction on a dry Colorado trail, they’re probably not someone to take advice from.

      Thanks for saying you don't air down. Maybe people will start saving some times and go enjoy the trail instead if doing what joe schmoe youtuber does.
