For the impatient, 5:00 is the beginning of the climb and therefore a good starting point. • Amazing dirt bike fall...
    UPDATE: Oct 19th 2019
Bike recovery video at: • Roads End Adventures. ...
See my channel for additional videos on bringing the KTM back to life!
A mishap on the climb up Schofield Pass, near Crested Butte, Colorado on September 4th, 2019. Video is long but thought it best to leave nearly uncut. It shows the descent, anxiety at the bottom and then a partial climb. What follows is the off path madness and splashdown into the punchbowl. I was completely uninjured and climbed out within 15 minutes of the incident.
Some stills are included near the end.
    • Amazing dirt bike fall...
There are so many friends, enthusiasts and visitors that helped in the minutes, hours and days that have followed the incident.
    * Ryan Edwards and Matt Watson for providing on the scene help
    * Mountain Moto Jam 2019 crew (Ryan, Matt, Evan, Barry, Bry, Don, Jim, Ty, Slade, Mark, Andy, Gabe, Todd, Scott, Dave)
    * Scott and Melanie Davie for the Jeep ride out
    * Seth from the G.O.A.T.S. www.gunnicbgoats.com
    * Chris Cox and crew from Crystal Mountain Ranch for the sketchy, cold and wet recovery attempt and subsequent success. crystalmountainranch.com
    * Dave Phillips for his extensive help with the bike once it was recovered
    * Adventure Riders of Colorado FB group
Most importantly, thanks God for your protection....show me the path.
    So what happened?
Riding a dirt bike across obstacles typically requires the rider to maintain momentum. As can be seen, I chose a riding line on the left as I thought it looked easier. I wasn't going quick enough and the front tire got kicked to the left which caused my throttle hand to twist and ... well .. you saw the rest.
    How about the fall?
First I grabbed for anything to slow me down; check out the shadows. No, time didn't stand still or slow down. I thought of my kids, called out to God and fell perfectly into the water. Once I surfaced, I thought I was going to drown but thankfully the edge was close by and I was able to gather myself, take a deep breath and patiently wait for help.

@Bob Watters You're wrong mate. He slid down about 1/3 of the way and then went over an edge straight down in the water. If you freeze frame at 5:31 you can see the exact moment he goes over that edge (head first) That edge is also visible on the photo at 8:41. Yeah, he was (panting like crazy, balance was off from the start, gave the bike gas when it was pointed off a cliff, was too tired to be observant and listen to instructions) like when his boy said to "stay right" about 4 times. I would have pulled him off the bike and walked back with him after the down hill because he shouldn't be out of breath from that. But I don't know how well his boy could hear that.

Somehow, I drove this from the CB side to Marble twice in a VW bug. The first time was in a rented bug. The second time, I took my own bug and got a flat tire about the place where you went diving. I’m glad it was on the inside front tire and not an outside rear tire. When I was in beginner mode on my Yamaha ttr 125, the creek crossing was too high for me to navigate. Thankfully, it’s what kept me from thinking that I could handle this cool Pass on my dirt bike. You got it. I didn’t know about having a healthy dose of fear or smarty’s in me at that point in my life. Now, I think about how far I might have to walk or crawl to get help.

I'm glad everything turned out okay for the new scuba diver! That rider was unbelievably fortunate when you consider the distance he traveled down and the immovable objects between the trail and the water that could have caused tremendous physical injury.
After watching it a few times I'm getting the impression that the angle of rock to the righthand side is just enough to create a similar effect to that created by the angled concrete freeway dividers we're all familiar with.
That divider was created to reduce the number of vehicles crossing into oncoming lanes. The angle is a sort of mild "V" shape, rotated 90°. It is designed to deflect a moving object from the ground upward where it then strikes the opposing angle of the concrete barricade, which doesn't prevent crashes in the same direction of travel, but it does reduce head on collisions.
That same angular momentum seems to have pushed the dirtbike where it's rider had no plans to go.

To take on terrain like that you have to commit to it without letting your mind slip into what-ifs. If that road was between two hills and there were no cliffs he could have done it without thinking about it much. He needed that kind of confidence. Amazing video, glad he's okay!
