I seen and interview of her saying nice thing about Poitier! To bad she didn't mention him that night! And the whole cast! In the interview she said Sidney was not given opportunity to direct more like he wanted to.
Thank you for posting the unedited clip. Look at Ruth!! And beautiful Shelley who is sorely missed. Nice reaction of the tragic Elizabeth Hartman on her co-star's well-deserved win.
Knowing that she hated this woman that she played, but how she played it so well, brought healing to my life. She portrayed the abuse I suffered so well. It made me feel like I was not alone. RIP Ms Winters. Thank you for telling the stories that go untold.
Shelley made a great career out of playing unlikeable, unattractive characters. She was a great actress and a very helpful and knowledgeable teacher. She loved guiding, supporting, and socializing with her students.
torres songs it’s ironic she played such characters because you can clearly see that she was the exact opposite. Beautiful and lovable. Julie Dawn Cole told me how wonderful she was.
Shelley Winters was fantastic as the racist mother in PATCH OF BLUE, methinks it was a much stronger performance than ANNE FRANK. She deserved this Oscar even more so. Miss her so much!!
I've always loved her. She was a sinner and a winner. She was Shirley and she was Shelley. That one gesture - gently touching the shoulder of Elizabeth Hartman as if to say you are not forgotten or left out - spoke more than words can say. Elizabeth Hartman was a wonderful actress and perhaps she didn't win because often the Oscars are based on a track record as opposed to a single great performance. It may have been assumed her day would come. Certainly she must have believed it because she deserved and earned her day in the sun. When it didn't come, it may have led to her tragic suicide. RIP Shelley and Elizabeth. Forever alive in my loving heart.
Well, remember, Elizabeth was nominated for Best Actress, so that award hadn’t yet been given out that evening. Elizabeth hadn’t lost at that point. But then she did lose - oh well.
Miles Montemore I am so glad I read the comments because it was so fast I did not notice that but you were right thank you for that observation and acknowledging that .
Shelley greatly deserved this Award. A fascinating performance in a great film. I am so pleased to see that many of you feel, like me, that she deserved an Oscar for "The Poseidon Adventure" as well.
She was truly surprised when she won for this movie, especially considering that she was uncomfortable with playing a racist role when she was in fact a supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in real life.
There is no way that Shelley Winters role in the film A Place in the Sun would have won against the the performance of Vivien Leigh in A Streetcar Named Desire that year.
Guess she'll have to settle for nailing maybe the greatest scene in a disaster movie, as in the "You've carried me all this way. . ." speech, followed by that dive.
LOVE Shelley Winters, a wonderful, gifted and dedicated actress and if her chat show appearances are anything to go by, a fabulous and funny human being too! That smile was so gorgeous. I read she was pals with Marilyn Monroe and in their early days as unknown actresses, they shared a flat together in LA. Just imagine having Marilyn Monroe and Shelley Winters as next door neighbours - what fun they would be!
I've always wanted to see Peggy Wood in footage of the Academy Awards for the year 1965. She should have won for this role even though Shelley had a stronger role. This great actress did not make many movies because she was primarily a Broadway actress but her legacy is intact with the Sound of Music and I Remember Mama television show.
Peggy looked really nervous as the names were being read. Since Peggy didn’t do her own singing, they didn’t feel she did enough work for the part. Still a fine performance though.
Two of my favorite performances by Shelly Winters are; A Place in the Sun. I think she was a supporting actress put in the wrong category of lead actress nomination, and Lolita (a smaller part). A well deserved Oscar for this role.
I never saw a patch of blue this was a little before my time but I was a kid when my mom took me to see The Poseidon Adventure and even though Gene Hackman was the lead actor Shelley Winter's performance always stood out and was so real it traumatized me. I will definitely watch patch of blue now!
I LOVED Ruth Gordon in her films, but she is particularly good in this episode of Columbo, as the murderer. She kills her nephew-in-law, because she is nearly 100% sure he killed her niece.
She was the opposite of D'Arcy. Class. Grace. Respectful. Always thanked the little people. I love her in this and many others too many to name from a double life to portrait of a lady from Bob hope to Roseanne the world is forever grateful to the one and only Shirley Schrock aka Shelley winters. God bless you in heaven!
I just watched this clip and wow, Shelley Winters deserved that Oscar. I was glad she won. On the other hand, I am disturbed by some of the comments on this page especially leaning towards Winters as a woman offscreen. It's called ACTING, people! C'mon, Shelley Winters was playing a character for crying out loud. Some of you need to learn how to separate fact from fiction. There are many famous instances of onscreen vicious characters played well to a T. Does Barbara Stanwyck from "Double Indemnity," Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life," the Nurse Davis character from "The Snake Pit," or Anthony Perkins from "Psycho" come to mind? What about Nurse Ratched, Frank Booth from "Blue Velvet," or Hannibal Lector from "The Silence of the Lambs?" Liking Winters' performance doesn't make me an evil person like watching Tarantino movies makes me want to go out and shoot somebody or watching the films of Lars von Trier make me want to become a clinically depressed nihilist. Roseann, the character that won Shelley Winters her second Oscar, was a cruel, abusive mother from hell and a c-u- next Tuesday. Even Shelley Winters, who later said in an interview that she always found redeeming qualities in the characters she played, hated this woman. I don't blame her. A part of that probably had to do with the fact that Shelley was a mother to a daughter herself in real life so I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to play a vicious drunk onscreen that engendered her own daughter's blindness. Nonetheless, Winters' Best Supporting Actress win for "A Patch of Blue" has to be one of the most deserving wins in Oscar history.
well, in defence of the commenters, winters was a pretty awful person in real life, playing it up in public aside. if you're going to stick up for somebody, learn a little about who you're sticking up for. take your own advice about seperating fact from fiction.
Wonderful to see Shelley Winters receive the Oscar and give her thanks in such a gracious way. If things had gone differently maybe Shelley Winter's friend and former roommate Marilyn Monroe might have had such a moment too.
I loved Shelly Winters, she was a lovely woman, and excellent, in every part she played, "A Patch of Blue" was such a very, well made movie of it's time and set a strong message. Shelly was great, acting as the, abusive, racist, bimbo, of a mother. But I have to admit, she also put a spark of humour in some of her roles, and you couldn't help but laugh. The whole cast did an excellent performance, especially, the late, Sidney Poitier and Elizabeth Hartman. RIP Shelly, you took home two Oscars, Bravo!👏👏💖💐💐🙏
Elizabeth Hartman and Geraldine Page worked on You’re a Big Boy Now.... they remained close throughout their lives, and both died within three days of one another 34 years ago.

+Annette Jenkins I'm well aware that putrid people exist in the world. I don't need Shelley Winters or any other actor to remind me. But how common is blinding your daughter?! Where the hell were Child Protective Services? She should have given that Oscar to a shelter for such victims. If you want to witness truly great acting by Ms. Winters, you should see A Place in the Sun (1951) and Next Stop, Greenwich Village (1976). I don't agree with your justification for that character, but you seem smart and sincere. So I am sorry.

My favourite story about her was how she went to meet a young director about a role in his new film. After chatting he asked if she’d do a test. There was a pause. Then she leaned down to her bag and pulled out an Oscar and stuck it on the desk between her and the ignorant kid!
@JOJO22858 Very true. After this so many people told Shelley they hater her because she was such a racist!! That was a double edged sword for Shelley: she knew was good to be so convincing but for people to believe she WAS the character??? Anyone who knew Shelley knows what BS that is. They're NEVER be another Shelley! BTW, I believe that is Sexy Rexy (Harrison), in glasses, seated behind her. And isn't that the great Rachel Roberts (his then wife) next to him?? Another great gone too soon.
Joyce Redman is Amanda Redmans mother. Amanda well known to British TV audiences for decades and perhaps to US audiences as the wife of Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast.
Until Mo' nique won an Oscar for Precious, Shelley portrayed one of the most despicable mothers ever. I kind of think of these two performances in the same way. You forgot that they were acting and you were filled with rage. These Oscars were well deserved.
Shelley was great - the clear winner here. They shouldve nominated Eleanor Parker, too, for 'Sound of Music.' Olivier's 'Othello' sucked. Only Frank Finlay was good in it. The ladies and Olivier all overreacted shamelessly. Geraldine Chaplin in 'Dr. Zhivago' seemed a nature for this category.
Robert Osbourne used to tell the story of how Shelley, after winning this Oscar, went around showing it to people as if she couldn't quite believe she got it.
She was great as that monstrous Rose-Ann D'Arcy. She must have HATED spitting out her character's racist comments. But her character was one nasty piece of work, and Shelley did it well. BTW I love how she trots on and off the stage!
