I, some few years ago, heard of a lady around 80, forgot her name, body builds. Started at 56. So, we as a society need a better understanding and vieepoint on age. I know someone prolly about 80 by now who literally walked from our town to almost the next state. The next state is an hour drive. He loves walking over getting a ride and prolly does it every day. It is all about taking responsibility and treating your body right. Not everything happens and it is one of those things. Not having healthful habits will eventually lead to a breakdown. Edit: Also, if you treat yourself as old, then you will act old and get old. If think youthful, even if have ohysical challenges, you will treat yourself like you are young and have better outcome. Even if stuff happens, won't be as bad as if have old mindset.
@Kris Moodley That's correct, you don't achieve that level without being so passion and perfectionist, that takes to rehersal. All the best rehears deeply into his category.
Yes, you are absolutely correct. Fred Astaire had a lot of talent for sure, but also really worked hard at perfecting his dance and art. He knew that was the way to do it.
Certainly as he really had an amazing and pleasant voice and remarkable singing talent as well. And of course even without his dancing talent he was a topnotch actor, for instance his performance late in his career in "Towering Inferno" earning him an academy award nomination for best supporting actor .

For those finding Fred Astaire for the first time through this video, he's 70 years old here and did a great job. Check out some of his best, like Puttin' on the Ritz or just about anything from his era. Fred rarely liked to repeat steps, so you could watch him for a long time and always find something new. Not many can say that, even the great Gene Kelly.
Nice point. You can see how improvisational he is here--at moments he makes me think of Bill Jones--finding the moves that fit the motion of the moment.
Miss Bob Hope , his Clean. Crisp & Funny lines delivered with a smile & twinkle in his eyes. Their Christmas Special shows used to be heart warming. True classy Entertainment
You know what, anyone who don't see that every single move he made here was calculated down to every inch needs to slow it down and watch it. Hes an expressionist and the manner he moves his hands and feet is simply brilliant. He had grace in his approach and attitude and if you think hes not dancing much at 70 or the fact a younger person only connects dance with what they see today as a young persons way of expression, then all I can say is look deeper. He just danced his ass off and he gets a luke warm reception? Everyone in that place shoulda been on their feet.
Thank you Jannet;) It appears you have amazing taste. Yea, If I danced like that at any age, my body would look like a transformer with a missing part lol;)
+SMTV I once saw an award ceremony where Michael Barashnikov held a speech. He said: "I dance before croned heads and high society as well as ordinary people. Each time I feel like a god. Then I go home, turn on TV and there he (Astaire) is, and I feel so very humble."
I even had a comment from some nitwit claiming that people like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Danny Kaye, Fred Astaire, etc. were just lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. He claimed that there was nothing special about these legends, they were just lucky. Try and wrap your head around such a statement...

Yeah I just worked that out just then born in 1899!!
That's really incredible, 71 and moving like a 30 year old
Actually, he was just short of 71: the 1970 Academy Awards was on April 7; Mr Astaire's 71st birthday came later on May 10.
I am 80 years old and Fred Astaire could out dance anyone today that call themselves dancers. And he does not have too grab his crouch to do so.... So there you fools, watch Fred Astaire the expert!!!!!
Wow, he looked fantastic for 71 and they didn't have Botox back then 😂😂😂.
Most his age today, look 100, ladened with pharmaceutical drugs.
But yet we are more medically advanced🤔
Fred Astaire, to this day is second to NONE!! A gentleman with style, grace and moves that none will ever have! He felt every note in his soul and showed it in all of his awesome moves.
Always the epitome of grace. He will always be remembered as one of the world's great dancers.
Fred was always elegant, graceful, and classy.
Aber für den Stepptanz zu dünn und Sprünge, so wie Kelly konnte er auch nicht. Er war nur elegant mit einer Partnerin und das war überwiegend Ginger Rogers.
Gertrud - Pia Adam-Taylor 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
He still had it. Elegant, soft, fluid, groove. Bob was great too.
From Lups,He's the GREATEST!!!
That's the perfect word to describe Fred, Fluid. He's like mercury, never seen anyone have that since, even the best ballet dancers can't land like him.
Fred is and always will be pure silk…no other dancing artist could ever come close to his elegance and style…he like Cary Grant and Cesar Romero were made for Black Tie!!
The man was one of a kind. Such talent! I love watching him.
+JubalCalif 👍
+Mary K Thompson Agree!
+Mary K Thompson - Elegance in "Style"
+Mary K Thompson Absolutely. I would have loved to have been his dance partner. I love watching Fred, Gene, Donald, Bing, and Danny Kaye. I wish I lived in that era. Fred is the best dancer out of all of them. Sad that times change and this style is no longer around. All we have know is TWERKING and JERKING. Now, that is sad.
He is one that is so sophisticated - Gene was athletic and Donald was close to Gene's style too - very quick on his athletic style too. Bing - I can't recall Bing dancing unless he does the soft shoe dance routine.
Anyone who loves dance, talent, humility, and class will naturally love Fred. Such a talent! See him once and you'll be a fan for life.
The best dancer ever in cinematic productions. This man here was 71 years old at the time he performed. At that stage, he could still out do any men in their 20's as he had so much style and grace.
Gene Kelly!
@@jefferyburton1518 Gene Kelly what? What are you saying that Gene was better? If so, then i tell you this, i bet even Gene Kelly would tell you Fred was the best dancer. I think Gene learned from Freddie boy.
@@TheBohemianAngels I love them both but maybe Kelly was more artistically ambitious. Stuff like 'An American in Paris' almost goes beyond its "musical" genre tag into a whole new kind of cinema.
Look at him move
He was amazing. He took up skateboarding in his 70’s…💕💕
My cheeks hurt from smiling widely. I swear, while I was watching him dancing, I can see his youth seep into him. It was amazing!
SO cool! Pure class to his dying day. Baryshnikov said Astaire was the greatest dancer ever. That’s good enough for me. Genius knows genius.
Such class and respect for others. We need to look back and learn from these gems.
Beautiful and gracious. In his seventies yet he was barely out of breath giving a performance that 20 year olds couldn't do today.
I could watch his movies all day long. Such a great dancer. RIP Fred no one will ever match your dancing. Loves those days.
Michael Jackson said he used to watch Fred dance for hours. He said Fred was one of his biggest influences on his dance style. Michael said he combined Fred, James Brown and Elvis dance styles and made them his own . Fred was incredible.
MJ never cited Presley to be one of his influences.
@@tintu2476 Elvis met his future wife when she was a child, must have been related to that.
I REALLY CARE about Michael Jackson! (not)
I was about to make a comment about that as it really reminded me of him
Fred astaire was lightyears ahead of Jackson, it is hilarious when ppl try put jacko in the same bracket as Fred Astaire 😂🤣😂
Like a horse running across a field, poetry in motion. Now this, is talent.
Mad. Skills
He loves what he does and that made me smile throughout his performance.
Beautiful xx
@Dawn Hall never stop moving and you keep body lubed up.
Class act...won’t ever be duplicated. Not just the moves, but who he was.
In every way, he was a class act!
You won't be seeing anything this classy at the Oscars nowadays.
+Linda Harrison so true alas..a lot of today's stuff is just vulgar...without much talent to show for it
Agreed. When lacking in creativity, sink to the lowest common denominator: vulgarity. So Pathetic.
Too busy being political 🙄
The Oscars aren't worth watching anymore!! Full of HATE is all Hollywood has left!
Cmon now we have CardiB and Jlo 🤪
Since I found this video, I keep coming back and watching it over and over again. He dances with such joy. I want to stay in state I am in when I watch. An incredible performance. What an amazingly talented human being he was!
Fantastic performance! So much elegance, grace and style, he made that look so easy and none of us could do a few steps. What a loathsome audience to not stand for the GREAT Mr. Fred Astaire. Thank you for posting!!! LOVE it!
@Productive Whinger WHAT a stupid thing to say about a legend. Given you've no class it is not surprising. Go crawl back under the rock you buffoon.
It was a time when talent, class, and humility were at the heart of humor, entertainment and sophistication. Dear God, I miss those days...
Unfortunately it's never coming back.
Nah, they had insufferable windbags back then, too. Fred Astaire had to share this stage with one of them.
@@BigBri550 Speaking of windbags, do us all a favor & cut your wind off ok?
@@bobmalon7244 Ah! but see I'm not an _insufferable_ windbag, so it's all good.
I am 80 years old and Fred Astaire could out dance anyone today that call themselves dancers. And he does not have too grab his crouch to do so.... So there you fools, watch Fred Astaire the expert!!!!!
SUCH a cool dude! WHAT a dancer. The beat is in him, & he IS the beat. Even in 1970 - at the age of 71 ! - he had more style than dancers half his age. So lithe. Sublime.
I come back to watch this every now and then. It just lifts my heart. Classic. So cool.
WHY are you people sitting?? Fred FREAKIN' Astaire just danced for you! Love that man - he oozed class! And even at that age, he looks as though his feet are floating slightly above the ground instead of touching it - he was fabulous.
Other stars in the audience. Need I say more?
Because the fact stars when on duty spends double the hours on their feet when on duty, so maybe can use a sit break.
This is what movie stars used to look like. I don't watch the Oscars or Grammys because I don't know any of the people nominated. I agree about the standing ovation. He definitely deserved one. There will never be another Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly. They were the best.
It’s his grace and fluid movement that still stands out here.
YES..IT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DANCING.....AND DANCING!
Wayne Farrell Media - it takes gay men to spot class nowadays . Where is the world heading?!
I'm not even 60 yet Fred Astair did that at 71 yrs old. In 1970. Fantastic.( I. Was 10 in 1970)
Fluid movement . You've said it all, sir!
ac McG - jack sees his master. Every move Fred performs exceeds anything Jack has ever dreamed of. It’s like an ecstasy moment. A revelation. Jack is totally conquered. He has given in
They should have given him a 10 minute standing ovation for that it was pure class , wow !!!
Fred Astaire fluidity in motion. There will never be another dancer like him. Rest In Peace Fred.
Totally agree!
How things have changed. You just do not see class and talent anymore.
Nah Gene Kelly was also great.
You are SOOOOO RIGHT.
@@charonboat6394 Pretty much on par but would cause a debate, I still say Fred was the better dancer not talking anything away from Gene.
Such grace and agility at 70 years old. Only the wonderful Fred Astaire could move like that. Amazing!
2021 here, such style and grace in his movements, had to watch several times.
His dance movements are like poetry.
What I love about Fred Astaire
His charm
His iconic voice
And his dancing ability.
The fact he didn't get a standing ovation just astounds me...
MarvelDCFanGal In the mere fact that he can dance better than 97% of them
facts
People never gave standing ovations often in those days - they were rare. Now they’re a dime a dozen and I guess people are so used to this, it seems strange...
Shahara Zon thus clip was the year 1969 FYI. 50 years ago. Go do your homework and check it out. Even if it was 1989 it would be 30 years ago. He who laughs last laughs best.
@@OperaJH i meant 60s
Wow 71 years old and he still had it . Amazing stuff. Amazing dancer. Amazing man.
How to bust a move.
I agree im in my 40w and cant move like that
71 is NOT old.
⭐⭐⭐🎊⭐⭐⭐
What an amazing dancer, so natural, 71 years at that time, and made it look so easy, only a master is able to achieve that...
@Kris Moodley That's correct, you don't achieve that level without being so passion and perfectionist, that takes to rehersal. All the best rehears deeply into his category.
@@atila1356 i saw sinatra in his later years he also was about perfection
Beautiful!! I am watching this 2024, I loved Fred, such charisma and poise.
The man doesn't miss a beat. He and the music, are one.
Love you, Fred.
I aim so glad my Mom made me watch all of those Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies when I was young.
I was afraid this might turn out to be a sad exercise in nostalgia, but at that age Fred Astaire still "floated" when he danced. Beautiful to watch.
Loved all of his movies, dance, drama. great work. RIP, Mr Astaire.❤
Fred Astaire’s dance moves were so smooth, and light! He was a natural!
TALENT!!!! Something that is missing from the artist of today! He perfected his artistry and had several other talents he could rely on as well.
Yes, you are absolutely correct. Fred Astaire had a lot of talent for sure, but also really worked hard at perfecting his dance and art. He knew that was the way to do it.
You can appreciate great talented man without putting down an entire generation. It makes you look ignorant and boomerish.
You said it well.
Certainly as he really had an amazing and pleasant voice and remarkable singing talent as well.
And of course even without his dancing talent he was a topnotch actor, for instance his performance late in his career in "Towering Inferno" earning him an academy award nomination for best supporting actor .
Talent, hard work and Soul....
This so classic. Something that is missing in our society today.
Eras único amigo Fred, hoy nos quedan tus agradables momentos que los detuvo una cámara para la posteridad, brilla lindo allá donde moras eternamente.Saludos al canal desde México.
I have always been a huge fan of Fred Astaire!! His dancing was impeccable!! 💞
Fred was as good a person as he was a dancer. Total class act.
Yes, no one had a bad word to say about FA. What a great person. 💕❤️💕
We need more like him.♥️♥️
That's really good to hear
Great person, fabulous dancer - but this number is terrible!
Class act! Elegant, sleek, and just wonderful!
Astair was just something we thought we'd have forever.........
He will be with us forever. His legend will never die.
He was so amazing. I loved Gene Kelly too, but Astair was so amazing.
mamatibbors cassady Yes, they were the flip sides of 2 coins. Astair the Gentlemen's Dancer and Kelly the Everyman's Dancer. Astair very stately, suave and graceful to Kelly's raw energy, athleticism. Even with the great dancers we see grace the stages today, there will never be any that will match the talent of those 2 men.
I will always have him, in my heart. For me he danced his way into it in Funny Face and never left!
Kelly Adams Yes, that was good. I also loved Daddy Long Leggs
He should have had a standing ovation!!❤❤
A pure gentleman, with incredible talent. They don’t make them like him anymore.
Fred was always so humble. I saw him interviewed and he was asked to describe himself. He said, "Oh, I'm just a song and dance man."
I remember him saying that.
Fred Astaire always looks light as a feather and makes his dancing look so effortless. Just loved watching him. Such an incredibly talented gentleman.
He even managed to keep his toupee on during this. And a knee drop at the end! Magnificent! What a talented and classy guy.
Spoken at my Mother’s Eulogy: My Mom always said, “The first thing she was going to do after she was in Heaven, & the Heavenly Business was done - Was, Dance with Fred Astaire on the Clouds!”
🙏🏻💛🕊🍃
That’s truly lovely. I hope she got to do that and what a wonderful thing to wish for. 🙏🏼 🕊
Yeah...riiiight😂😂😂😂😂😂
❤I love this!
❤❤❤
Oh, I love that! God bless her beautiful soul!
Nobody could dance like Fred Astaire. He was one of a kind. What a magnificent life he had and shared with the rest of us!
He just had a talent that started a long time ago. Wonderful he’s there. Is it cold in years?
More talent on that stage than in all of Hollywood today.
Truth!
easily
Ahhh the gods of yester-year.............
It gets really good at 4:38! Wow, so impressive he could do that in his 70s!
Fred make it look so easy. So light on his feet, even at this age. Any dancer will tell you this is a work out!
Back when men had class. Astaire was such a smooth dancer.
Chivalry
Yes my friend, class is almost gone
Such a shame how men have such fear of things like dancing or anything they deem ‘feminine/gay’ these days, this skill level is so attractive
Yeah - no 'saggin' back then - you didn't have to see their underwear and butt-cracks... they pulled their pants up, like (before the prison gays thought it up for 'easy access') real men do. Gentlemen. So very rare today.
brought a big old smile to my face. Astaire had true class!
J
For those finding Fred Astaire for the first time through this video, he's 70 years old here and did a great job. Check out some of his best, like Puttin' on the Ritz or just about anything from his era. Fred rarely liked to repeat steps, so you could watch him for a long time and always find something new. Not many can say that, even the great Gene Kelly.
Watch the firecracker 4th of July solo number in "Holiday Inn" (1942).
ARE YOU SERIOUS???? INSANE!!!! NOTHING BUT RESPECT FOR HIM!
Incredible -- I’m 54 I get out of breath just grocery shopping I feel like gonna die lol
+SMTV Totally agree! They have just witnessed a genius! They should be standing and applauding an amzing man!
+Rudolf Trost total crap.Just look at the crap out today.
Elegance, sophistication and real talent
Someone once interviewed Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones about showbusiness. He was asked - what is your definition of "professional" - to which he replied "Fred Astaire".
Fred danced without effort and with such grace. Reminds me of Ali in the ring and George Best on the football pitch, poetry in motion
They should have given him a standing ovation. I was giving him one watching it today. An extraordinary talent. Just WOW!!!!!
@Productive Whinger Yes, serious. Download your best dance routine for us here and I'll be sure to rate yours as well. Thank you.
