That part of “Terms of Endearment “ where Debra Winger reaches out her hand to her mother right before she dies is really powerful. If that doesn’t cause emotions then nothing will.

@@danielscottrussell3365 Who would have expected roughly 18 months later Rock Hudson who presented Shirley MacLaine with her Oscar that night would be dead from complications of AIDS at 59.
So true. In Debra’s last scene, just before she dies, she looks at Shirley McLaine and says goodbye with a flicker of her eyes. No words needed. That is true acting.

Shirley MacLaine's character in "Terms of Endearment" was eccentric, with any number of unpredictable characteristics and foibles that had to be played convincingly. Her role as Aurora was much more of a challenge than Debra Winger's role as Emma. I would imagine that Shirley's brief moment with Debra as she headed to the podium to accept her Oscar was one in which she graciously acknowledged how close the vote between them must have been. I was surprised to recall that this was Shirley MacLaine's only Oscar for Best Actress. She certainly deserved one earlier on, particularly for her performance in "The Apartment".
Shirley Maclaine's performance, without fail, brings me to tears. Some say 'Terms of Endearment' has not aged well, and I say they're crazy. James L. Brooks understands the human condition better than most directors.
She was so good at her role in "Terms of Endearment" that she was able to pull off one of the hardest things in the Academy Awards: winning an oscar while competing with a nominee from the same movie who deserved it also.
Both performances were wonderful. Even though I wasn't a fan of hers beforehand, Shirley's performance was so earnest I thought for a solid two hours that she was my actual mother. Not only did I think that Debra was beautiful but this was the first performance of hers that I had ever seen, and her performance was so adorable that she melted my heart and made me fall in love with her (I often joke that she probably has a 3D printed copy of Shirley's Oscar at home).
She's genuinely funny and moving. This is simply the most striking acceptance speech I've ever heard. Shirley's a true talent and quite a beauty. Anyone who's seen her in The Apartment can not even begin to disagree. I mean, seriously, where are women like that these days?

What wonderful performances this year! I knew about the outstanding performances from both Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment (Shirley MacLaine so deserved the Oscar), but I forgot that Silkwood came out at about this time, too! Meryl Streep was also amazing in her performance (as always)!
Years from now Shirley MacLaine's performance as Aurora Greenway in Terms of Endearment should be used as an example of truly great screen acting. Her saturation went down to the bone. Because of her efforts, we understood this character as well as Shirley did, passing through the stages of life along with her. A woman capable of love but with a closeness which had to be forced and somehow at the cost of her basic fairness to humankind. Hopelessly imperious and so fearful of growing old she expects her grandchildren to call her "Mrs. Greenway." Extremely funny in spite of a set of characteristics which can only be viewed as pitiful. Brava Shirley. The Oscar was a long time coming but could not have been more deserved.
+laxus 94 Bullshit. I love Debra, but she just cant be compared to MacLaine, who was not only by far the best part of that underrated film, but she stole every scene she was in as Mrs. Greenway. Debra was a shadow in comparison.

GREAT PERFORMANCE ! One of the BEST female characters ever written and SHIRLEY pulls it off ! Just BRILLIANT ! One of the most HONEST people I know.
Silkwood was soooo good!
I was just watching Terms of Endearment, damn she was so great in it!! You don't see performances or movies like this anymore!
I don't think anybody had ever given a better performance, hands down!🙅🏽♂️
This is the best, most captivating speeches I have ever heard on the Oscar's, and yes she deserved it! Brilliant cast. Brilliant film.
Look at Jack clapping and blow her a kiss. He must have loved working with her.
Omg Legends on the stage :Rock Hudson, Liza Minnelli & Shirley McLaine ❤
TheChannel.TV years from now on when they review this they will know debra had better performance
+laxus 94 Bullshit. I love Debra, but she just cant be compared to MacLaine, who was not only by far the best part of that underrated film, but she stole every scene she was in as Mrs. Greenway. Debra was a shadow in comparison.
dr strangelove debra was the movie. She was thw heart and soul of that movie. For me mclaine was judt supporting.
dr strangelove movie won best picture and is considered s classic. I dont think u can call it underrated
I loved the sequel to "Terms of Endearment" called " The Evening Star. " Not many people know about it as everyone I've asked say they've never heard of it. Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson are both in it. It shows you afterwards when the Grandchildren have grown up. Juliet Lewis plays the teenage Granddaughter. The full movie is on UA-cam. Definitely worth a watch ua-cam.com/video/CLyW7HVfGkE/v-deo.html
Lol,…I have a dear friend who was Shirley’s rehearsal pianist for years. I remember he said after seeing this, “She deserves the award for portraying a nice person.” Love that.
They didn't have to sell so much advertising back then they actually let the artist speak they gave them the time to say their opinions clearly whether you loved or hated them it was all pure back then now it SUCKS!
It's so refreshing to see such an intelligent, sophisticated, funny speech at an Oscar. Other actresses/actors should watch this and learn something from it.
When she hugs Debra you see there’s Love between those two actresses. They wanted to pin them against each other.
She was so great. This win and speech makes me cry every single time.
She is the best most beautiful giving and insightful person and a truly gifted actress ... She is insight inspiration grace truth and beauty She is truly a gift as a person Much luv Shirley i will be contacting to you later XoxoxoX
Shirley was amazing in this role - the scene when she screams at the hospital staff when her daughter needed the pain shot was just brilliant - how a real mother would react and the scenes with hunky irresistable Jack Nicholson. I can't believe I only just watched this fantastic movie. It is in my top 5 all time favourite list. A wonderfull film xxxxxx
What a beautiful speech
I became a fan of Shirley Maclaine when I saw Sweet Charity. Watching many Shirley Maclaine movies, I knew how great she performs in comedy, musical or drama, The Children's Hour for example for drama. I LOVED her Speech and I agree, there are no accidents and we can mold our life into success using her as an example.
"I'm gonna cry because this show has been as long as my career".. LOL!
I love her speech. It comes from the heart! Unforgettable. I agree. The Best Award Speech Ever!
I love Shirley!! She is one of the greatest actresses! She was also wonderful in Steel Magnolias!
I think that she should've gotten a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for Steel Magnolias. I think she was nominated for a British Academy Award for it.
I always cry (happy tears) watching awards shows ... my own weakness .... that being said this is by far one of the best speeches ever.... crying over her words.
