The main thing that makes it a fantasy gun is that it's "deluxe " and it's from Pietta 😂
Yep like saying an identical replica from Kolser 😂
Pietta makes fine guns, that function very well. Uberti makes pretty guns that may or may not function very well with some issues. Own both.
Good lord those grips are disgraceful. I'm not sure how that design made it past QC.
I always see people commenting about problems with the brass frames. I am 65 and have been shooting black powder since I was a kid. I have at least a dozen that are brass frame some of them I have had for 30 or 40 years. I have shot the hound out of them and never had an issue with any of them. I believe most people are either loading them way too hot or they have seen a comment by some UA-cam guru and just automatically assume that it is correct.
You are very correct. You'll get more problems from cylinder slop than anything from the brass -especially newer examples
Junk
My brass frame 36 is one of the best shooting cap and balls
It's not an issue of stretching. Brass is soft as you know and can only be hardened so much depending on the exact alloy. The problem is inertia drives the ratchet and cylinder backing into the guide ring inside the recoil shield and as the denting gets deeper and it becomes flatter the gun gets looser and looser until finally it can't function. I never did call it stretching and have no idea where that terminology started as I called it shooting loose. I shot one loose a few decades ago and I didn't do a ton of shooting with that gun, but I hunted with it and took game with it therefore I was using 30-35 grain charges in that brass frame 44 open top.
I bought one of these for my wife’s grandfather and always smile when I see it hung high up on his wall along with the rest of his collection. I need to take him to the range to play with it sometime soon.
I think stretching is probably possible but according to one guy who commented, he said, the brass today is stronger. Maybe over years of use with higher caliber ammo I suppose it's possible but I really don't believe it's much of a concern. Thanks for the review, Sir. 👍🤠
I have a Henry big boy and it has a brass frame in a lever action gun. they claim it is an alloy and stronger than steel. mine is 44 mag and gets some heavy loads. that being said.... I am not a fan of fantasy guns I have an 1851 and a 1860... seen no reason for this gun.
@@doranmaxwell1755 I can understand that. 👍
Great review Dustin. My first black powder handgun was a Navy Arms Griswold and Gunnison replica in the incorrect caliber of .44, given to me by my wife for Christmas in 1974. It was a brass frame and very strong. I shot the heck out of that gun and used full charges of FFFF powder to see how much more velocity I would obtain. Obviously I did not do that regularly and the report with the FFFF was more of a crack than a boom.
After all that use, the revolver remained tight. I traded it back in the eighties and now wished I hadn't. Thank you for all the hard work making your enjoyable videos. (Don't recommend using FFFF other than a reduced charge in a C & B revolver.)
Your explanation of the revolver was extremely informative and detailed ! It looks and sounds great ! Very much appreciated as this is my only exposure to black powder revolvers and guns of the west I have . I am in Canada , unfortunately.
im glad you made this video i have the same 44 but with the wood grips and was wondering how much load to use with the bras frame. btw the wood grips are much nicer :) think ill be buying that 44 lite kit next paycheck
😁
I just got my first black powder, 1858 Texas Sheriff from Pietta, have not had the chance to fire it yet, but I have enjoyed the information you have for us that have these. Thank you, I have learned a lot from them.
Nice looking gun, really like the engraved pieces. I’ll be picking one up soon, I have the London but would like one in brass. love the fact I can order one and have it shipped directly to me and not need an FFL.
Ewwww! Plastic! I have a few of them myself. (plastic grips) I hope to eventually replace them someday. It's kind of fun to make them myself. I don't have an issue with brass accents, I'm not too keen on brass frames, I do have one though. Cool video Dustin!
I have the same gun but older and the grips are walnut and well fited...
I don’t have one. And you can trim the grips down with a pen knife. Once you do that they feel very good in the hand .
This is the exact one i first bought in blackpowder. The frame has stretched out and i need a replacement wedge aswell. The loading lever lock broke too. Honestly in my opinion just buy a steel framed 51' you'll thank me later.
A lot of the cheaper guns you feature on your channel I can see the appeal even when they aren't for me. Not sure about this one, but some better grips couldn't hurt!
I actually have some projects for this gun specifically, including in my online course. As strange as it may sound, I needed one that’s as wrong as possible. LOL
.31 is okay for brass, everything else should be steel.
Sir, love all you're videos. I wanna order your products, but always out of stock for my uberti .36...make more...ill just keep looking. I like the paper cartridge kit...just wanna buy it...
I actually do have that in stock. Here’s the direct link: gunsoftheweststore.com/products/paper-cartridge-kit-36-caliber
damn thats some hard flat country your in !!
I think they'll be a replacement grip video somewhere in the future.
More than likely. LOL
Should tracked down the ivory hadle engraved navy 36 and the 36 and 44 gunnisons for sale.
what are you making your bore lube from?
Do you have a source where to buy a mainspring and trigger spring for a 1858ish New York firearms manufacturing company 1851 navy? I’ve read the repop parts won’t fit original antique models.
Hmmm. I am surprised The grips are the way they are. The grips on all of my Piettas are fine matching up perfectly. All of them wooden. Maybe not matched due to the plastic design? I noticed the screw. Maybe two pieces? My grips are all one piece.
I was surprised too. Like yours, my other Pietta revolvers have grips that fit nicely.
Muito legal 👏👏👍👍🇧🇷👊
That grip fitment is a travesty.
About replacement grips: for some reason the term "gutta percha" comes to mind. Is that material still made these days?
Yep thats what l thought on first seeing them it's still made today from a plant secretion and is used mainly to fill in after root canal work at the dentist.
They're nicely patterned for a good grip, if he shaves the overlap down they should feel pretty good.
Can it survive.454 silver round balls
Where did you find precussion caps
I haven’t found any of these Remington #10 caps for a while. I’m still shooting from my supplies that I had before everything went crazy.
@@GunsOfTheWest do you happen to have a video on how to make your own caps
If I may ask, you never said in the video. If it has all these issues what made you purchase the firearm? Was it the engraving?
Cool video, your light rounds seemed pretty peppy to me 😊

@GunsOfTheWest ohh haha I understand that. Good luck in your class with it! Thanks for the reply.
@@GunsOfTheWestHistorcally or functionally? Because it’s definitely wrong historically.
@@eancola6111 Historically.
Bet those grips will be changed very soon, they look plastic and in a bad way, regarding brass frames why don't the manufacturers cast steel and then electroplate the brass, best of both worlds for those that like the brass look.
The .36 engraved EIG model is a lot better.
Well that pat would be right in the chest
Plastic grips?! F that.
NOT FOR ME, TO ''GAUDY''
Ok.. the 'engraving' on real Colts cyl is not engraving. it is roll engraving. I nickel plated my BP revolvers and the roll engraving stands out much much more.
C;mon, a .44, 1851, brass frame, plastic grips????? You're "guns of the west" this atrocity never existed.
Which l think is going to be the point of his next video on this gun. 🤗
