    my plastic grips were scrape to fit. I shoot my 5 replicas differently, at a Florida State range, with 20 min. relays outdoors. a great friendly facility. I shoot 38 special reloads through Howell Cylinders. I sight my navys by deepening the sight groove in the hammer about i/8 ". i also flatten the top of the hammers slightly. I am currently working on a load similar to commercial HBWC. by a combination of fitting and reloading i am getting a pretty good point of aim.

    I recently bought a Pietta "wildcard" which had similar grips, only white stag plastic. The balance was off. I filled the center with about 20, 22 pellets in epoxy to balance like my 61 navy with wooden grips. the wildcard is a 51 navy with a 7.5" barrel, steel frame, came timed perfectly. shoots high out of the box. time to deepen the notch in the hammer.

      A nice thing I think with Pietta is that replacement parts like the internal kit that includes the hammer (in case you want to go back original) is that you won’t pay more for it than just the hammer from others. O.R.

    When the pistol is new remember to tighten the nipples as they are often loose. Also tighten the screws from time to time when you've fired it a few times.

      @oldranger3044  Рік тому +1

      Thanks John, and often they are really cranked on by the strongest factory employee. That’s ok if nobody ever needs to replace or service them. Those are hard enough to loosen when new, so imagine 10 to 30 years later. I’m trying now to remember to loosen and retighten whenever I get a gun. Thanks again for the reminder for shooters to check them out. O.R.

    Nice looking pistol. I like the brass frame look, there is one problem with it. If U shoot them a lot the base pin will start to wear the brass out. I would say buy the steel frame pistol.

    Tap on the frame with a plastic screwdriver handle to get the stocks to come loose from the revolver.
    In most cases you can run the screw back in a few turns and tap on the screw head to pop the off side grip panel loose.

    I'm very impressed with the arbors on the Pietta's. Mine are perfect as yours are. My Uberti is about a quarter inch off.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому +1

      Right, and it must be more than luck because mine also check out that way. The easiest way to CYA would be to be sure the hole is deep enough, or arbor short enough, otherwise it’s going to be real noticeable. Begs the question of how they are getting it right. Thanks for your comment. O.R.

    I’ve purchased many of these plastic grip guns.
    You are spot on concerning the grip. Not one was fitted to the back strap. Pietta is doing a better job than Uberti as far as working out of the box.
    Also Pietta has lowered the barrel stamping on 2022 models.
    Personally I prefer the thinner grip that they have.
    I wish they had some for the 1860.

      Didn’t know about the barrel stamping. Thanks. Now I need to go back and get a shit load of dimes. My feelings exactly, and I welcome hearing it from someone else. I was beginning to think my right hand was perverted when it told me “actually this thing feels pretty d-n good.” O.R.

      One more thing. I like a thinner grip, and here’s the definition of stupid. In the 80’s I bought a nice used 2nd generation SAA and took a wood rasp to both sides of the grip. 😢. Y.D.R.

      @@oldranger3044 also on the plastic grip. I just use a pen knife ( pocket knife that folds from both ends for the young guys) to trim down the plastic. I’m going to try a bed liner coating on one
      Also back in the day the main spring was thicker. Have you done a cap jam with heavy vs lite main spring comparison.

    On the dry firing.. may not hit nipple but may peen the frame where a cap holds it off the frame as well. If you want to dryfire try empty caps

    I have alot of old Gun magazines from the 50's and they have articles on the "new sport of Black powder revolver shooting". In alot of the articles they recommended loading a .revolver with 1 or 2 grains of Red Dot followed by the black powder, they said it was much cleaner shooting and more accurate. Do you have any experience with these duplex loads?

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому +2

      Nope. My mag collection only goes back to early 70’s, maybe a few late 60’s. I’m aware of duplex loads for rifles such as 45/70, but never heard about it before for BP pistols. I’d be tempted to try, but I’m also aware that my age I could get the formula wrong, and ka-boom, no more O.R. videos. Thanks for this input. O.R.

    • @oldranger3044

      Should work. Keep in mind that the folks making the grips probably can’t make a perfect match, especially compared to original wood because that I believe is shaped while on the back strap which is somewhat unique to each gun. If you don’t have the wood, the replacements should basically fit, but might want to be modified somewhat. Sometimes that can be fun, and a learning experience. Have a nice Christmas. O.R.

    Doesn't the hammer falling strike with a different force? Just my thoughts aloud. Awesome work

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  3 місяці тому

      Interesting. Never given that much thought, but maybe it’s not a factor because most other single action and double actions (many used in high end competitions) have similar spring activated hammer falls. Thanks for the comment. O.R.

    you have shot them all pietta and uberti, I'm looking at buying a 1860 Army. so what would you go with and why. Have you had more luck with pietta or uberti for fit and finish and which one shoots on point out of the box the most

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому

      Couple of points that are pretty much for sure. The Pietta has a 1-30 twist. Uberti 1-16. These are approximately correct. So Uberti might do some better in the accuracy with conicals, and possibly with a conversion cylinder. They are both good shooters. Second, the finish of the Uberti is ahead of the Pietta I feel. Machining is tight on both, in fact so tight on the Uberti that I had quite a time getting the barrel off a couple. The two I’m looking at are around 2020 mfg. Shooting high is probably a draw. Front sight of the U is .140, P - .100, approx. P would shoot higher except it’s hammer locks further back. Left or right is I feel a matter of luck. Entrance of chambers of U are slightly beveled, P are not and therefore shave lead. End deals on P loading lever are noticeably sharp, more smooth on U. There was more end play on the U. Both lock tight. Suppose for even $ I would choose U. The issue I have is that l’m not loaded with $, so if I had to pay more than say fifty for the U, I’d be in Pietta land. This probably doesn’t help a lot with your decision, but I had fun dragging them out after a long winter. Appreciate your questions. O.R.

      Didn’t know that stuff existed, so I have no clue other than they feel pretty good, and internally they are well fitted. Looks to me that they aren’t going to slide around on the back strap. They are some thinner then the wood which might work well for smaller hands, and not as likely to slip in greasy or wet hands. If that is true, they should be advertised that way because it is sure more authentic than plastic as buttons and other stuff was apparently made of it. That said, wood has the traditional look and feel. Thanks a bunch for your information. O.R
