Cabin in the Woods Part 17: Framing a Chimney

- During this episode of Cabin in the Woods, we start framing a chimney. Understand this is not a typical chimney, but rather a facade. Inside there will also be a chimney frame constructed and inside that, a special double wall tube for all the hot air. This allows us to use conventional framing instead of brick or stone. We will be installing Versetta Stone Siding on the inside and out of the chimney, and that is going to look awesome.
Stabila has some really good options for lasers depending on what you are doing. While framing our large windows on the gable end, we used the LAX300G to initially ensure perfectly plumb jambs, but it was hard to see outside in the bright light. We then busted out the LAR350 rotary which makes it very easy with the receiver. Pretty killer tools to have. Do you need them...no, but it is more accurate than just using a level.

With Ryan's ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE plan, I was like one taken by the hand and led step by step from start to finish. Thank you very much Ryan!
The building is moving again. LOL Great job gentlemen.
Yes why is the building swaying!
@@TheWheels1965 It isant, the lift is moving.
I sure hope the only comments on that were jokes like yours....
Bubba - Haha, I was going to comment the same thing :)
Did you see how the previous episode the building went up and down? Yea...it did.
Love the "corrected grammar." I grew up in a home with a mother who was an English teacher. I am so thankful for a mom who taught we well. Your videos are so instructive. I wait for the release of each of them. Thanks.
The banter just keeps getting better and better. Digging that chimney.
I'll be honest, as a carpenter, fist time I watched one of your videos, I was thinking to myself: man, what a waste of time and money. But now, I'm actually exited every time you upload. I've realized that post framing is just a different way of doing things and it actually looks pretty fun to do. Looking at the way you guys work (not in a rush, shorts, casual shoes, no hard hat), it just feels like a dream work environment. Keep it up!
livingthedream!!
RR B That's so awesome! You guys are so blessed! Appreciate Your videos!
I hate hard hat work man
@@RRBuildings as we would say... LTD!
I can't believe I miss this episode of the build series when it was first uploaded. Wow this episode is GREAT!
I live in Europe, but I hear those wooden chimneys burn very well :-) Nice work again.
I just want to thank you for your videos. I have been subscribed and watching for over two years and I have told so many people to watch your videos. I have been building for over 30 years, part time and full time. I was looking for another way to build a garage for myself. Well, I built my cabin and for the last few weeks I have been framing my shop 48x72, 12 feet high. You have made such a positive influence on my building skills, that I was only off by an 1/8 on the 72 length. I did the slab myself, there was 88 yards of concrete, (I used insulated block as a retainer wall on the 72 foot back wall 6 feet high. My wife and daughter helped raise the walls one section and post at a time. I could not lift the wall with my equipment, so I rented a 40 foot lift and worked out of that for two days and go all the wall up and plumb. I used your marking system on everything. What an easy way to build, everything was marked and checked. I had a framer to help me on the trusses, him on one end, my daughter on the other and me in the middle in a sissor lift. The 19 trusses went up in about two hours (because everything was marked and checked. A boom truck to lift them in place last Saturday. I rented a sissor lift to did the perlins or lathe the framer called them on the top of the trusses. Anyway, thank you so much for the videos and information. I have nothing to comment on, I watch and listen to you and watch your old videos to make changes to how I work. Metal roof is next, I plan on doing one piece of tin at a time and I get done when I get done. Sorry for the length, but you two guys are such great builders, I just wanted you to know how some of us feel. It is great to see such a positive influence today. Thank you.
That is awesome
To hear and exactly why I continue to share
@@RRBuildings Btw, thanks for the comment, I am working on the metal and have reviewed some of your prior videos on how to cut and make it work...the thought process on making a cut and which cutters (L or R)... wow...but my building is really looking good, if I say so myself, great knowledge in the prior videos...be well..Joe
As always fantastic work . There is nothing better than watching two professional doing what others should be doing . And what is it called . perfection and passion.👍🏼👏🏼👊🏻
I'm learning all kinds of neat tricks and techniques with you. Thanks!!
Sure have enjoyed watching it come this far. Beautiful perfect work.

You guys are hilarious. Awesome build btw. Love the channel, very informative and detailed!
That chimney is going to look amazing nice job. It's great to see that someone cares building.
Great stuff as always! I liked 11:30 to see I'm not the only one that has those moments of "dang, I mis-thought that."!!!! Keep the videos coming!
Yet another class video, great job guys 👍👍👍👍
For a long time, I avoided depending on battery powered tools. You have slowly been changing my mind on this. Thanks for sharing!
Real work, great communication, Nicely Done! Bravo!
I came for the cool looking buildings I stay for the banter haha. The building looks beautiful can't wait to see more.
very good work. Precise construction. I really enjoy watching what you and Gregg are doing. Best of luck.✨👌
Great video series, thanks guys. Wish we had quality builders like this in the Bay Area! I like how you take the time to do things right and not always just the quickest and simplest way to get things done. Real pride in workmanship on display!
That chimney is going to look amazing once the verseta stone goes up!! Amazing job so far guys!
Always appreciate the effort. Look forward to the next one.
You are doing great with the grammar. I mostly see youtubers having a problem with run and ran. You are doing just fine.
Great job 👏🏽 I just left it like 👍🏽
Don't worry...the chimney is okay being made out of wood... This project is definitely shaping up to be a good one...Please subscribe if you wish to follow this one along
Father and son, son and father , very brave ! Great work fellas

Thanks, will do!
Man, you guys are just phenomenal! You both inspire me (to want to build) and demotivate me (‘cause it won’t measure up) at the same time! Great work! Thanks, for filming/editing/posting it!
You can do it!
You two guys rock, have to build one at my own home, Big Thanks
Keep them coming, excellent vlog 👍👍👍

That’s going to be a fantastic fireplace! Love the windows along both sides. You two work so well together. I’m sure you have your moments though. You can just edit them out!

now you are just crazy....youtube just hasn't fed the video to enough people yet
Well I watch every video u put up and beside a few other channels ur pretty much why I watch UA-cam
Frame houses all week, do renovations all weekend and watch you work to relax. Might be addicted to building.

Love your work ethic...... Something to duplicate for sure!!!!
Qualité de travail extra ! Et sans forcer en plus !
Awesome job, guys. To work with you is the work of dream I think ))

I´m from Sweden and likes your videos.
Four-shirt minimum in the summer heat.
Keep killin' it, guys.
You guys are definitely entertaining.
Chimney looks great
Yous an Greg be done good works. 🤣👍.
God bless.
Learning something new every day. Thanks.
They are definitely good builders. I have even picked up some tricks from the videos .
That man finally got a fresh cut stay blessed y'all $
Usual great attention to detail.Bet you have customers standing in line!
Kyle making us mere mortals feel better about what we do with the old fashioned sturdy kick test
Well done on the workmanship and the subs. I remember when it was 5000!
Thanks
Man, that chimney was so wobbly. I can't believe it didn't fall over......
nevermindthebollocks fairly sure the lift is wobbly...not the chimney
I think we viewers take it for granted that you produce these videos and have no stress doing so. What we don't know, and what you have intimated several times now, are the smart ass comments you have to deal with written by anally correct idiots, in this video about your possible grammatical mistakes. Ignore them buddy. You both do a tremendous job and are a pleasure to watch. 👍💪🤘
Keep up the great work!
Amazing what these two can accomplish. It's all about the math. And the energy. Where does he find the time to sleep and edit? Talk about an over achiever. Very impressive. Love the channel.
Your work is great
Video quality of you talking at the end with the building in the background is 👌
Has a strong helper..... Lifts looks like +8’ tall chimney wall by himself. 💪🏼
Happy anniversary!
Looking good gentlemen...... “The heat you talk about????” Come build me one on Toledo Bend in south Texas. I’ll show heat like you have never seen.
Looking sweet guys
Nasty cut on you right leg Kyle! And, as the wise Jimmy Diresta says: "if it looks straight, it's straight". Love ya.
Since you asked, heightH is not a word. It's width, length, depth and heighT. It drives me crazy when I hear people in the trades say it.
Isnt that the point.
I would rather watch real life vids of builds then any HGTV or DIY shows out there on television I’m sure it takes lots of time and effort especially when this is what you do for a living to provide for the fam..... just want to say thanks
Thanks Ruben it takes an infinite amount of extra time it seems but I love when people let me know it helps them then it’s worth it
@@RRBuildings It shows off how much care you put into your construction. I'd kill to be able to find someone to do that for me at a fair cost. It's good to see skilled builders out there doing it right and taking the time, gives hope that they exist lol
i know I am kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Grayson Ruben i watch on Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Yousef Jeremiah yea, I've been using FlixZone for months myself =)
These videos make me want to be a full time framer or general contractor 😆 🛠
Happy anniversary big guy
would love to see a fly by of all the land .that pond looks nice
Man working in this heat is a serious hardship, I feel for ya.
OMG, that building is swaying in the wind.
when the camera is on the scissor lift it appears that the building is swaying but its not. its the scissor lift swaying
@@zyawotha I was totally kidding. It's a running joke.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for using proper English. It’s refreshing to know that it’s still being used these days.
Nice job
I always wanted to light a cozy fire in a wood chimney. Just kidding. Looking real good!
1800 watching. Well done mate
greg &co did a good joob.. :-)
Nice fireplace. Hopefully they add some exterior lights that accentuate it at night.
LOL! When You said, "Don't want to have improper grammar for all you You-Tube commenters..." [Happen to have a B.A. in Communication and Journalism] Appreciate the verbiage... As far as the way You guys look: The "high and tight" military hair-cut is looking awesome.
I'm not sure if I'm here for the novel(to me) building protocol, or if I keep coming back for the banter and comedy and Northern MidWest dairy accent. Regardless, you guys are the best! Carry on.
Haha thanks
You Guys are AWESOME ! 1
I hope "Math" can be Greg's new nickname.
Happy anniversary Kyle
thanks howard hope all is well...could have used your roof tent on this job to stay out of the sun
Happy birthday Kyle 👊
Congratulations now we can clearly see you working ............ LOL just keep it between the lines bro ;-)
The best part of the video them breaking bread.
Temperature forecast for the first week of August in central Illinois is for highs in the upper 70s. Relief is coming eventually.
Just noticed y'all ate lunch on it as well would love to get a set of them
Brake Cleaner...best freaking solvent of all time. I buy it by the gallon and use a SureShot canister for it.
I see so many tiny things that you do that put 99% of builders/carpenters to shame. The fact that you took the time to ensure your stud was centered where it should be...I've NEVER seen that in a house being built. Believe me, they don't do that in my area...not at all. All about "you have 2 days to frame the house, so what if your 2x4 stud has a 6" curve in it...just use it".
Wow, look at the building sway! You boys have that guyed out, right? ;-) Oh, and nice hair cut! About time eh?!?
Glad to hear that you are working on your grammar!
