My favorite Megadeth song. I'm kind of embarrassed to say my son told me, hey Dad I have a friend at school his name is Justis and his dad Dave Mustaine is a rockstar I had no idea who he was. Justis spent a lot of time over at our house playing music with my son and Dave and his wife Pam came over a couple times and they're very down-to-earth and super nice people. Dave is a very intelligent guy.
Can't not hear "Meg-a-deth" along with the riff every time I hear it since that's what the crowd always does live. :) Thanks for covering a Megadeth tune.

You think that me stating a fact is bragging? Should I say that I’ve been friends with Marty for 20 years but don’t really know him? We are working on another video together idiot. I don’t know about Warren but when I say I know someone, they are longtime friends not someone I’ve met once.

I think this was a warm up show for the Cryptic writings tour. So badass to see Dave & Dave, Marty and Nick all on stage together at the same time (by far the best Megadeth lineup ever).
So cool that you and Marty are friends He's always been one of my favorites.... the work he did with Dave, Dave and Nick was pure magic Love those megadeth days
I love the opening lyrics to this song. "You take a mortal man. And put him in control." So kewl to me. It's a precursor for disaster . You take imperfection (mortal man) and give him power.(control) A disaster waiting to happen. Very well written.
I’m pretty sure Symphony was my introduction to Megadeth as well. Tornado of Souls was a close second. I’m a thrash-head, and I’d say Megadeth is my 2nd favourite musically,, although I respect the band more than my favourite thrash band. I just love that Dave has never stopped working; always touring and always making music.

Rick Beato's content is a blessing. I can watch his videos and learn about music I dont usually listen and I love the way he explains things so that even non fans and non musicians can appreciate it.
I'm normally one to jump all over the negative youtube lists and such for a bit of cheap entertainment and opinion confirmation, but... with this channel actually I think it's way more interesting to just keep talking about the positive stuff. There are so many rubbish songs and mostly what makes them crap is exactly the same stuff... I just don't see it being as entertaining to watch honestly.
From production, sound effects, modes, chords, moods and the breaking down licks damn what more could a musician ask for. Rick the all-in-one musictionary.
Although I know the whole song is great, that Marty Friedman solo in particular for me is just awesome. The phrasing, the rhythmic concepts on the note grouping, the bluesy licks, the harmonic work, the vibratos... Man, so much stuff going on in a compact solo that isn´t even 30 seconds long. That´s what I call being a pro.
Brilliant!!!! My favorite band of all time. This demonstrates how leaps ahead Megadeth (of this era) was, MUSICALLY from their competitors. So much of this was due to Marty's influence, no doubt. Who the hell dislikes this? Camaaaan! Keep up the stellar work dude!
"I opened for Megadeth for 5 weeks; and oh, Dave... I was the guy on the bus jammin' with Marty." 😂🤣😂🤣😂 How many of you can say your favourite instructor pulled a rabbit out of his ass like that, and was able to keep it white? I knew I'd like this guy even more as soon as I started this vid.
Great break down. The solo that really slayed me was Tornado of Souls. I know it’s borderline heresy for some, but that solo is the Stairway to Heaven solo of thrash metal. I’d Love hear Rick pick that one apart. Just genius.
Agree. I learned tornado of souls and symphony of destruction solo. Tornado took me about 4 weeks. Symphony was about 2 . They both sound great but there was some special stuff in tornado of souls that make you rethink your playing. 🤘🏼
Marty Friedman is lightyears ahead of all metal guitarists. His approach to melody is unmatched and any musician can and should learn from his phrasing
@@ryadachaibou8098 I’m actually really glad Mustaine was fired from Metallica. Megadeth brought a sense of progressive architecture to thrash metal song writing than no other band did, and Metallica never would have allowed, I don’t think. The Mustaine/Friedman duo was light years ahead of the music scene, even by today’s standards. The perfect soundtrack of a dystopian future.
I haven't actually listened to Megadeth for over a decade, this vid made me totally wanna go put an album on straight after, but before I got to that point and put an album on I was reading comments. This one made me go straight to ToS, as it sparked the reminder in me and was totally correct. 🤘🏻 One of the greatest of the whole era, and although I'd forgotten I knew from my teenage years it was a corker.... correct!!!
This dude is awsome. I met Marty Friedman and his parents many years ago when I was attending Musicians Institute. And yes, he played the solo from Tornado Of Souls. He's a really nice guy, and so are his mom and dad.
@@cotoxs123 That's because the more popular the song, the more there is of what makes it great. Of course that's not always true, but deeper cuts are too subjective. Obviously there's something about these songs that reaches a lot of people. And in this one it's the verse groove and hook-ey chorus. And the production. Notice you won't find any unpopular songs by a band on "what makes this song great". .
@@mattmarkus4868 I'm sorry, but 'Holy Wars...The Punishment Due' is NOT a 'deeper cut'. Literally everyone who claims to have listened to Megadeth at some point in their lives knows about Holy Wars, so its as popular and pivotal as Symphony, if not more ( Just like Sandman vs Puppets for Metallica ). That song represents and sums up what Megadeth is best acclaimed for 1000X more than Symphony Of Destruction.
@@sainandanramakrishnan4812 This is the only song I've ever heard by them because it was on the radio and MTV, and I can bet there are others like me . I'm not even really what you'd call a Megadeth fan at all because I just can't get into Dave's vocals but I think Hangar 18 is a really cool song. My buddy is a HUGE Megadeth fan though. I guess of the somewhat "80's metal" bands I might like Queensryche the most and think Empire and Jet City Woman are really cool songs.
@@mattmarkus4868 Well, then you missed out on most of the masterpieces that these American metal bands from the 80s ( Megadeth, Metallica etc. ) put out, as none of them were on the 'radio'. Did you ever stumble upon their song 'Peace Sells' that used to be the bass intro to MTV News for the longest time ?
Unfortunately he chose to do meth which messed with his brain. There's a video where he's showcasing some cymbals (probably one of the last videos he recorded) where you can clearly see that he's completely out of it.

Man I used to do homework to this song in middle school. So cool to hear this song again as an adult and understand its nuances. Thanks again Rick, you are amazing!
It took me 18 months to play this solo up to tempo...lol. The problem was learning something where the fingerings for left hand were so different from what felt natural for me. This solo was the one that got me to realise you must play other peoples songs and guitar parts if you are going to progress as a guitar player. These days I learn lines from classical music and through this and Marty's playing I have forced myself way out of my comfort zone into fresh new ideas going from Bach to late 20th century stuff also.
@@gsxerwhite I was also lucky enough to see that lineup twice; once in Virginia and a year later in Glen Burnie (I cannot remember the name of the venue).
Another winner Rick. I’d love to see you break down some of Nuno Bettencourt’s solos especially anything from the Extreme album Pornograffitti. He’s one of the most inventive guitarists of any decade and I would love to see your analysis on some of those songs. Thx!
Only things you missed (I think): a) how Ellefson's bass under the repeated guitar riff creates the chord progression of the pre-chorus: E-G-C-A-D and then the chromatic thing; b) how Menza switches to half-time (one of his specialties) in the back halves of the second two choruses.
"Acting like a robot, Its metal brain corrodes You try to take its pulse, Before the head explodes...." THE definitive Megadeth song!! Brilliant breakdown Rick. Thank you! RIP Nick Menza. Amazing groove and syncopated accents on this tune.
Friedman's solos are so precise, fluid and clean it sounds like video game. In his book Mustaine said Marty was the most incredible player he'd ever known and that he considered him even better than himself to the point he was secretly jealous
IIRC RIck mentioned he loved Helmet in one of his older vids, I believe he'll do an episode someday. I hope he does Milquetoast, I always wondered about the theory behind the outro section.
Rick....I love this series. As a relatively amateur producer this is an amazing series and endlessssss fun and information for me. Now days as a new and learning producer everything is electronic....hip hop and EDM or Pop in the mainstream. So getting to watch a video where someone is analyzing rock or metal and stuff outside that computerized world...AND has the stems...oh man this is so great. Thank you!!
Binge watching this channel now, I've learned more about music from Rick in a year than all years prior, he makes music fun and his excitement is infectious. Thanks Mr. Beato.
@LordWhorfinX2 The series isn't entitled "What makes this song groundbreaking" though. It's about great songs of which Pantera actually has. It's one thing for them to not be your bag. It's another to dismiss them all together.
Rick, I would love to see a video on the evolution of recording. Like the early days of recording and how it evevolved into modern recording. And maybe why it sounded the way it did at certain eras.
This is the genius of RIck's series. I have loved this song since the first time I've heard, it. I still love it. After watching this video, I love it even more and appreciate it in a way I never have.
It’s incredibly amazing when he solo’s the instruments to hear how well each track just stands for itself, man that is what we could call killer-production skills! Very good guitar tone from rick as well!
Hello Rick. I think you already knew, but the IV to I in the Intro (after the Orchestra Tuning) is a sample of Mozart's Requiem (Domine Jesu Christe) Great Channel btw :) Cheers
Thanks again Rick. You've opened my ears to Marty's playing. I mean I knew he was a killer guitarist but I couldn't hear or understand what he was doing, and now you've clarified that for me I love Marty even more. Cheers RB
Great breakdown of this song. By far my favorite Megadeth album. Marty, and actually Dave's guitar playing were just awesome. Actually this version of Megadeth, with Mart and Nick was my favorite lineup. But, Dave is more than a "good" rythm guitarist. His lead style is unique, and he often layered them with vocals.
Yeah try finding anyone on youtube singing and playing "Poison was the cure" well.
Marty is a legendary lead guitarist. Dave is a damn good composer and a lead guitarist who can also keep up with Marty. Evidence is Hangar 18.
So cool that you and Marty are friends
He's always been one of my favorites.... the work he did with Dave, Dave and Nick was pure magic
Love those megadeth days
I love the opening lyrics to this song. "You take a mortal man. And put him in control." So kewl to me. It's a precursor for disaster . You take imperfection (mortal man) and give him power.(control) A disaster waiting to happen. Very well written.
Three part harmony & three-part mixed metaphor... excellent 👌
They should redo the lyrics for a contemporary version. You take a senile man and put him in control
"World powers fall". Always thought that line was cool.

Nick, Nick, Nick! "Fuck me running.........." Priceless.
Symphony Of Destruction's the very first Megadeth song that I've listened. Since then I've been listening to a lot of Megadeth songs.
My introduction song was Tornado of Souls
Dave Ellefson's intro bassline on Peace Sells gets me everytime.
Only reason I didn't change channel during mtv news
It was written by Dave mustaine and not ellefson.
@@indranilsingh2682 True, but it was Ellefson who played the riff in the recording...
@@episodebeats2817 well that's true, sorry if I came off as rude, all that matters is that Megadeth is a sick band! \m/

"Megadeth is what kind of band you get when Jazz musicians start playing heavy metal." - Scott Ian
It was meant as a compliment I believe
@@basildog007 Yeah, when Scott said that, he was referring to the advanced song compositions on Megadeth's first two albums, Killing is my business and Peace Sells...but who's buying, particularly the plethora of twists and turns prevalent throughout the album that made their sound stand out from their contemporaries.
I mean, Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson were actual jazz heads
@@basildog007 Yeah. Us, I remember reading an interview with Scott and he said that of the Big 4 debut albums, his favorite was Megadeth's Killing is My Business...
@@MetalMarauder And heroin..... don't forget the heroin...lots of heroin.
Rick, you taught me more about Marty's playing style in 25 seconds than all my years of listening to those solos! Thanks so much!
Rick Beato's content is a blessing. I can watch his videos and learn about music I dont usually listen and I love the way he explains things so that even non fans and non musicians can appreciate it.
I would love to see you make a series called "why this song sucks"
Not relevant, but a good idea.
Bryan L. Morrison actually totally agree with this.
Or, "why this song sucks and what they could've done to make it great!"
I like the way you think@ challenger.
Do it with songs popular with the rock and metal community's and grab a fire extinguisher
The bass on this track has always been :chef_kiss: for me. It just sits right under everything, driving it on.
I love how the guitars and bass fit together in those riffs. Such a great sound on this song.
I was the guy on the bus jammin' with Marty." 😂🤣😂🤣😂
How many of you can say your favourite instructor pulled a rabbit out of his ass like that, and was able to keep it white? I knew I'd like this guy even more as soon as I started this vid.
Im stealing the rabbit line!! LOL
OUTSIDURRR Fuck yeah.....me too dude. That made me laugh so hard. Cheers bro.
Nick +Marty file the void oh so well it will never happen again unfortunately
Yeah, My Jaw Dropped when he just Casually dropped that one lol
It was a gerbil, not a rabbit
Timeless Metal Masterpiece. As simple as that. Holy Wars...The Punishment Due will require a one hour video xD
True lol, Hanger 18 about 2 hours to attempt to break down all the solos in that one as well lol

So many people overlook the importance of THAT BASS SOUND in this song! David is the most important part of this song!
Similar to Duff Mckagan on appetite for destruction
Your insane, it is MARTY EVERYTIME AND DAVE
🤘🏻 One of the greatest of the whole era, and although I'd forgotten I knew from my teenage years it was a corker.... correct!!!
That lineup is probably the most talented lineup in metal, ever.
This dude is awsome. I met Marty Friedman and his parents many years ago when I was attending Musicians Institute. And yes, he played the solo from Tornado Of Souls. He's a really nice guy, and so are his mom and dad.
Would have preferred Holy Wars, but this is just as awesome!
Actually, I've heard songs from the album they did with Vinnie Colaiuta, but that's because I'm nuts about drums. I'm not a big fan so it makes sense this is the only song I know.
The only indigenous 'metal' bands that were household names in the 80s and got significant MTV time were the glam guys in LA.
Did you ever stumble upon their song 'Peace Sells' that used to be the bass intro to MTV News for the longest time ?
Smoking! Great job Rick! RIP Nick Menza, underrated to this day.
Nick was awesome
Unfortunately he chose to do meth which messed with his brain.
There's a video where he's showcasing some cymbals (probably one of the last videos he recorded) where you can clearly see that he's completely out of it.
André Silva yes I remember seeing that .. he was endorsing Soul tone cymbals at the time .. he was a hot mess.. but Dave mustaines son put up a video of a secret drummer that was auditioning and it was Nick behind the kit .. but unfortunately.. because of money Nick never got the chance to rejoin the band .
@@andresilvasophisma and in a couple of those videos, (which got flagged for copyright) he was covering a couple Megadeth tunes. And he nailed them!

Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Soundgarden...
It seems a lot of your viewers love your metal "what makes this song great" videos. The crowd wants more metal Rick.

Only things you missed (I think): a) how Ellefson's bass under the repeated guitar riff creates the chord progression of the pre-chorus: E-G-C-A-D and then the chromatic thing; b) how Menza switches to half-time (one of his specialties) in the back halves of the second two choruses.

Friedman's solos are so precise, fluid and clean it sounds like video game. In his book Mustaine said Marty was the most incredible player he'd ever known and that he considered him even better than himself to the point he was secretly jealous

Tornado of Souls, maybe? I love this song's solo.
"It's incredibly well produced." I always thought Max Norman never got enough credit for his producing. Great video as always.

This record has the best drum sounds of any Megadeth record IMO. Max Norman killed it on Rust in Peace but IMPROVED on this record. It's amazing.
Since you did symphony of destruction, you should do hangar 18 or holy wars .They are essential megadeth songs
Holy Wars particularly. Ask any new Megadeth fan to name a Deth song and almost unfailingly it's Holy Wars.

Great breakdown of this song. By far my favorite Megadeth album. Marty, and actually Dave's guitar playing were just awesome. Actually this version of Megadeth, with Mart and Nick was my favorite lineup.
I was playing in a metal cover band in college when this album was released and I made it my mission to nail this album in its entirety so I could come to rehearsal and ask,"Anyone want to give any of the new Megadeth album a shot?"
Marty has always been so unique. I heard a friend say, "If liquid butter could shred, THAT would be Marty Friedman." That's the best description I have heard in reference to how smooth Marty sounds.
