Good Mourning/Black Friday is better in my opinion! The excellent pacing, build-ups, Chris Poland's solos, the amazing chainsaw riff. Easily takes the top spot.
For a great example of simply following the chord progression to create a moving and powerful solo, without even needing to get into sustained 32nd-note runs and blistering sweeps and such, I like to reference Alex Skolnick's solo in Testament's ballad "Return to Serenity". Because of the slower pace, you can easily pick out his scale changes and mode shifts as the background rhythm by the amazing-in-his-own-right Eric Peterson progresses through the cords.

Men, I tell you: - I've devoured this album when it came out and saw this exact formation live here in Cascais, Portugal in 1995, and I was blown away... It was a small pavillion and I could see them from really close!! Dave singing and riffing is just inhuman!! Like you say about James! But this song.... is for me one of the best metal songs ever!! Do people even realize the work of art that this is?! And Dave's melodic counterpart is obviously Marty, and his work on this solo might impress Mozart! I'm about to learn this song, although I know I won't be able to play the whole solo, but at the moment I'll be happy with the whole riffs and part of the solo. Loved your music theory comments on this one, and just subscribed to the channel! Good work!!
I saw this line up at the sunken gardens in San Antonio, Tx and in the middle of one of his solos during Hangar 18 Marty broke a string and literally without missing a beat he flawlessly changes positions and continues the solo. I said to myself thats what makes Marty Friedman legendary and the reason he is up on the stage and Im honored to be down here watching it take place. I will remember that on my death bed.
I first heard Rust in Peace recently and Five Magics just blew my mind, all those solo fills when Dave starts singing are INSANE. Absolutely agree with you
Ridiculously well-crafted solo. Marty is exceptional at note-choice. Stands the test of time at any time. - Great channel, by the way. Thanks for this Shred.
1990-1992 gave us some great music through some great albums from some amazing bands, Painkiller, Never Neverland, Souls in Black, Cowboys From Hell, Spiritual Healing, Streets and so many others. Have to admit though that personally, from these two years this album (Rust In Peace) and Sepultura's 'Arise' are constantly on my playlist.
Tornado of souls guitar solo is without question the greatest heavy metal guitar solo of all time. It is the prefect blend of blues soul and hard edge speed. If you disagree with me, I challenge you to a duel!
@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT You clearly know nothing about guitar playing. Stupid trolling kid. Kirk writes the most melodic, soulful and memorable solos of any of the Big 4 guitarists.
@@placidblack836 He's probably 15 and has been playing guitar for a year, if he plays at all. And IMO, Kirk's solos on Battery and Damage Inc are even better than his Ride The Lightning solo, although not as epic and thematic. The intro solo to Fade To Black is also a masterpiece.
The musicianship on this album to this day is unparalleled. Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Nick Menza, and Marty Friedman really put together an absolute Masterpiece.
The comment you made about the division of the mind, something we all learned was a complete necessity to play these songs as a guitarist was to be able to sing them. We had good teachers though. wore them tapes out man!
Tornado of souls has one of the most difficult solo to play. I would love to hear Shred talk about Dread and the Fugitive mind. Al and Dave have amazing leads on that song. One of my favorite Megadeth tracks post Marty and Chris.
I was literally thinking how cool it would be if Shred did a “Tornado of Soul” video, yesterday. I even told my instructor that I would like to play it. Next day comes this video! Law of Attraction at work... Thank you Shred! Great work and video as always.
Dave is an excellent songwriter, you could see a definite style change when he left Metallica. Not that their music wasn't good, it just wasn't the same. I'd love to see a breakdown on Slayer's Raining Blood in a future video if you haven't posted one already.
To me, there's enough good Slayer songs to make a long greatest hits album. But too much of their stuff sounds too similar. They are a bit of a gimmick band.

Marty Friedman had so many amazing guitar solos during his time with Megadeth. Tornado of Souls, Angry Again, Lucretia, Killing Road, FFF, every solo of his in Holy Wars and Hangar 18... Truly a guitar god.
Hardcore Megadeth fan here...I'd love to see analysis of Wake Up Dead (Megadeth) and Scavenger of Human Sorrow (Death)...As far as solos goes ToS is amazing but I get goosebumps with the solos from Ashes In Your Mouth (Countdown to Extinction) and obviously Hangar 18...I think the Marty-Dave guitar duel in this is the best piece of solo I have ever heard...Keep up the good work Shr-atan :)

I'm a huge Sabbath fan, but come on. Black Sabbath isn't even the greatest metal song in the Black Sabbath _album_ -- that distinct honour belongs to N.I.B.
@@MrWilander88 Well, none of those are in the Black Sabbath album, though. I would agree with you that War Pigs and Children of the Grave are likely better songs than N.I.B. (although CotG is WAY too different a song to even compare, imo), but not Under the Sun -- it's a great song (this is Sabbath we're talking about), but N.I.B. is better, for me. Honestly, we could sit here all day choosing the best Sabbath song (and I would likely agree with any 15 you might pick, tbh 😁).
I heard this song when I was 15 (90-91). I had very little metal experience, but a late night radio station played it and I was instantly hooked. I listened every night for weeks just to hear this song. Its not my favorite song ever, but it had huge lasting effects and exploded my world of music.
I hardly ever see "looking down the cross" mentioned among megadeths best songs, or "chosen ones". Both are jems from their first album, especially the former so for me it has to go "looking down the cross" for best megadeth song but "my last words" for best solo. ( My last words is so sick it's literally blocked on spotify. in my country at least.)
@@jacobgarcia2660 I'm not gonna lie but I honestly prefer chris poland's playing and solos from peace sells over marty's work. Idk I just feel it suited that album perfectly, very evil and unique
Video “Liked”. Great stuff man. I’ll always acknowledge the iconic guitar solo in this song. But I’d argue that Holy Wars...The Punishment Is Due is the greatest metal song.....well at least by Megadeth for sure. From the odd unique choice of intro riffs, along with the drum fills matching along builds up to one crazy fast main riff that flows smoothly into an almost blue-like thrashing verse riff. No chorus really, which is definitely a metal genre choice. And do I need to talk about Marty’s acoustics into potentially Mustaine’s “heaviest” riff which then is followed by one of the most eargasmic (if that’s a word) guitar riffs of all time. Battling guitar solos from both Friedman and Mustaine before and epic return to an intensified main riff of the song to close it out. So much love for Holy Wars and the entire Rust In Peace album.
I have to agree, everything in it is just right, the riffs, the solos, the vocals, the lyrics, the bass, just everything lines up so perfectly it always keeps you on your toes
It's definitely one of Megadeth's best, but I'm more of a Metallica fan, so I would choose Master Of Puppet as the best metal song of all time - it has every element of the perfect metal song.
@@dowens3781 while I agree that MoP is definitely a fantastic song, my only problem with it is how often the main riff repeats. I know that’s weird since it is thrash but something about how Holy wars always has these small riff changes keeps my attention more
There's a person on youtube who is playing this Solo over Hotel California and it fits perfectly. There you go. Best chord progression and one of the best solos of Rock music. Friedman "just" made his own solo for Hotel California and sneakily put it into a Megadeth song. That's why it's so much better than so many other metal solos. It has the soul of rock music in it.
i dont know about the song being the best metal song of all time. but in my opinion the solo is definately the best metal solo. you cannot beat those arpegios
Peace Sells, Rust in Peace, and Countdown to Extinction are my three favorite Megadeth albums. What set Countdown apart was Mustaine's demand for perfection in the recording studio. He wanted Nick and Dave E to be in perfect sync, and he and Marty just absolutely killed their guitar parts. With that said, one of my all time favorite guitar solos is from Country Girl on Sabbath's Mob Rules album. Iommi's solo was short, precise, and beautiful. He didn't overdo it. He put in exactly how many notes he needed to put in to make the solo, IMO, perfect.
When this was new me and my buddy were rockin' out, tripping' on mushrooms, air-guitaring this whole album. I was blown away by Friedmans style. Just amazing. Nice to see how highly it is heralded all these years later.
I remember thinking this was the best song on the record when it came out but I never would have imagined how much attention it would be getting on something called the World Wide Web 30 years later. Good review. I actually took this and fused it with the song Vortex from Cryptic Writings which is also in B. It's on my channel - it came out really cool - that solo is certainly difficult but I managed it.
You should check out “She Wolf” live from the 98-00 era with the extended soloing, drum solo and pure sonic devastation to your ear drums. That’s when Jimmy Degrasso was on drums and Jeff young maybe? On lead.
Agree about Mustangs voice. Lot of people I know hate it. I dig it. Very original. As far as the solo. I like it, but I still think something like Randy Rhoads solo in Over the Mountain stands out in my Mind more. It stands out 2 me so much it was the 1st solo that came 2 mind as soon as you asked the question , and I haven't listened 2 that song in years.

Hard to say, I'm a big fan of Pantera and I think Damebag got some good stuff, the same with deep purple if we can consider it metal, which I don't think so, so basically I think Damebag would be the one who could take the best solo ever, would be nice if you make a video about floods.
Peace and congrats for the channel.
God knows this channel is not like others
Good work!!
I believe being in a relationship that’s like a tornado is very important learning experience in life haha
One of the solos that can get stuck in my head for days. One of the quintessential metal albums of all time.
Fermented Offal Discharge by Necrophagist has one of the best solos I've ever heard.
All solos off that album are mindblowing
For sure! Any song you can listen to and not get bored of it is golden to me!
Dave Mustaine has the "evil" metal voice
I saw this line up at the sunken gardens in San Antonio, Tx and in the middle of one of his solos during Hangar 18 Marty broke a string and literally without missing a beat he flawlessly changes positions and continues the solo. I said to myself thats what makes Marty Friedman legendary and the reason he is up on the stage and Im honored to be down here watching it take place. I will remember that on my death bed.
One of the greatest solos
when youre lisning to tornado and of souls and you here the first bend of the solo, every body within ear shot turns a head
I love that song and solo, but I Like even more the first solo of Painkiller of Judas Priest. 🤟🏻
epic solo
Painkiller is better on Sound of Perseverance.
@@noideaforthecanalsname1896 yes! Death nailed that song!
I'd go with the solo in Ram it Down as well. I'd love to see Shred break down some Glenn Tipton
Tipton is an underrated guitarist.
This is the best metal solo ever, you are 100% correct. This album made me want to learn to play
IMO Five Magics is probably the best song off that album. Completely unique sound with all the time signatures and stuff
I first heard Rust in Peace recently and Five Magics just blew my mind, all those solo fills when Dave starts singing are INSANE. Absolutely agree with you
I agree. 5 magics is insanely amazing.
Ridiculously well-crafted solo. Marty is exceptional at note-choice. Stands the test of time at any time. - Great channel, by the way. Thanks for this Shred.
Greatest metal song of all time? Possibly.
On the greatest metal album of all time? Inarguably.
Everytime I watch this performance I think of how softly Dave caresses the fret board
Top 5 for sure
Had to learn that solo years ago for a band i was in at the time. was a blast to play.
I wouldn't quite say it's the best ever I don't like getting into that discussion, but its definitely one of the greatest ever
Everyone knows the greatest metal solo of all time is Slayer "Raining Blood" lol
Pshychotron !! Then Diary of a madman solo !!
How about analysing dying fetus?:)
One of my favorite solos for sure, but I also love the solos from "Stabwound" by Necrophagist.
Tornado of souls guitar solo is without question the greatest heavy metal guitar solo of all time. It is the prefect blend of blues soul and hard edge speed. If you disagree with me,
I challenge you to a duel!
😆
Man ..
Kirk’s solo from the song RIDE THE LIGHTNING blows this solo away ..
@@placidblack836 Kirk can’t write a guitar solo out of a paper bag. Worst guitarist in the big 4.
@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT
😆
I mean .. I’ve heard of haters but geeze bro ..
@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT
You clearly know nothing about guitar playing. Stupid trolling kid. Kirk writes the most melodic, soulful and memorable solos of any of the Big 4 guitarists.
@@placidblack836
He's probably 15 and has been playing guitar for a year, if he plays at all.
I've never been in a relationship, but I have been in a tornado. And yes, it's just like Mustaine's hair.
The comment you made about the division of the mind, something we all learned was a complete necessity to play these songs as a guitarist was to be able to sing them. We had good teachers though. wore them tapes out man!
amen to old guitar world! them tabs
for me
greatest solo: the best of times
greatest album: metropolis pt2
greatest thrash metal album: rust in peace
greatest song: the odyssey
@Umut I asked, gonna now listen to those songs again
The odyssey by who?

Then follow up with "South Of Heaven" . . .what a guitar and drumming masterpiece.
I tried but got blocked
Their music wasn't good, it pacified the masses, and it was forgettable while other artist forged forward and remain relevant
To me, there's enough good Slayer songs to make a long greatest hits album. But too much of their stuff sounds too similar. They are a bit of a gimmick band.
Thanks Shred. Your commitment to your passion is infectious 👊
Any guitar solo from "South Of Heaven" . . . .the left speaker Hanneman . . .and right speaker King .....cannot be beaten.
Listen to that album with headphones . . .alone . . . cell switched off . . .bedroom door locked . .in the dark . . .no distractions...concentrate on the two guitars and what they do . .
.i dare you ....i
@@donotpassgo7547 Ghosts of War...what a solo in that song...I used the Jeff's riff back in the nineties in my old computer as a sample. It was like hypnotizing listening in loop mode.
@@rodrigo_79op I agree . . . .how the one guitar riff compliments the other one that's busy doing the solo..then switch back ..to let the other one do the rest of the solo..genius.
Marty Friedman had so many amazing guitar solos during his time with Megadeth. Tornado of Souls, Angry Again, Lucretia, Killing Road, FFF, every solo of his in Holy Wars and Hangar 18... Truly a guitar god.
GREATEST SOLO EVER!!!
I'd say the greatest is good mourning/black friday ;)
TOTALLY AGREE
my favorite megadeth song "Lucretia" that solo is incredible. not to take away from this song at all. Dave's ability to play those fast rythms and singing is insane. this is by far the best megadeth lineup. ellefson, mustaine, menza (RIP), marty
“Black Sabbath” is the greatest metal song ever. Literally created the genre and inspired countless future bands
na
Not the best metal song, but one of the best metal bands.
I'm a huge Sabbath fan, but come on. Black Sabbath isn't even the greatest metal song in the Black Sabbath _album_ -- that distinct honour belongs to N.I.B.
@@cobrasys Even "War Pigs" and "Children of the Grave," Oh and "Under the Sun"
Those first two albums are insane, the level of musicianship is crazy
@@jacobgarcia2660 I'm not gonna lie but I honestly prefer chris poland's playing and solos from peace sells over marty's work. Idk I just feel it suited that album perfectly, very evil and unique
@@christianq1526 I totally agree Chris poland is a animal of guitarist, gar samuelson was a amazing drummer too rip
I think that's Holy wars the best metal song
I have to agree, everything in it is just right, the riffs, the solos, the vocals, the lyrics, the bass, just everything lines up so perfectly it always keeps you on your toes
It's definitely one of Megadeth's best, but I'm more of a Metallica fan, so I would choose Master Of Puppet as the best metal song of all time - it has every element of the perfect metal song.
@@dowens3781 while I agree that MoP is definitely a fantastic song, my only problem with it is how often the main riff repeats. I know that’s weird since it is thrash but something about how Holy wars always has these small riff changes keeps my attention more
@@banzaibomb4980
I can understand that. Personally, I prefer simpler songs - they're catchier.
@@dowens3781 can totally respect that, I personally play bass so I probably like listening to the complexity a bit more than most
There's a person on youtube who is playing this Solo over Hotel California and it fits perfectly. There you go. Best chord progression and one of the best solos of Rock music. Friedman "just" made his own solo for Hotel California and sneakily put it into a Megadeth song. That's why it's so much better than so many other metal solos. It has the soul of rock music in it.
i dont know about the song being the best metal song of all time. but in my opinion the solo is definately the best metal solo. you cannot beat those arpegios
killer arps
Probably a half dozen Nevermore songs that can qualify as the best songs ever.
When this was new me and my buddy were rockin' out, tripping' on mushrooms, air-guitaring this whole album. I was blown away by Friedmans style. Just amazing. Nice to see how highly it is heralded all these years later.
Megadeth > Metallica
I remember thinking this was the best song on the record when it came out but I never would have imagined how much attention it would be getting on something called the World Wide Web 30 years later. Good review. I actually took this and fused it with the song Vortex from Cryptic Writings which is also in B. It's on my channel - it came out really cool - that solo is certainly difficult but I managed it.
This channel is about to earn one of my very rare subscriptions.
muhahaha, excellent
Such a great tune! I remember hearing it for the 1st time back in the day. Was blown away at the "new" megadeth at the time.
Awesome song and superb riffs and lot of fun palm muted harmonics.
Hanger 18s 5 consecutive solos back to back is pretty epic.
