usually when i watch a video on a paper it's because it's faster than reading the paper. but i did have time to wonder about use vs vulnerability in the hippocampus. i think you're wrong to assume taxi drivers aren't leaving the profession because of early stage alzheimers. the mental burden of taxi driving on internal mapping resources is enormous. you need to picture A and B, and imagine a route from A to B, anywhere in a city. imo this does not correspond to the requirements of most computer games, physical skills or cognitive challenges, and i think you hope in vain that riding a bicycle about remotely emulates that. i have direct experience that mapping does not equate to general spatial skill. i'd suggest it's the difference between topology and geometry. i cannot stress enough what a weird skill taxi driving is. it's a slow disease, and maybe the job becomes confusing long before any other deficits present? given that taxi drivers tend to transition between jobs anyway, it seems likely that _taxi driver_ won't be recorded as the most recent job for someone who died of alzheimers after a slow decline. but for all that, i'd still bet on use reducing risk as the best explanation of a hippocampal phenomenon
The London taxi examination is famous. It was central to the almost equally famous television play "The Knowledge" (1979) which was funny and humane. Highly recommended. ua-cam.com/video/oSAAB1ZmudY/v-deo.html
Wow! @Dr. Joel Duff! You have been putting out some very cool videos lately.
Thanks, expanding my range of subject material a bit.
Nowadays, most drivers just follow the instructions on their smartphones.
Don't use GPS if you know what's good for you.
