After seeing TikToks talking about short king spring, the movie Tall Girl, leg-lengthening cosmetic procedures, TLC’s My Giant Life, and celeb couples with noticeable height differences - I thought this would be an interesting topic to cover. There is so much discourse and media created about the topic of height. There’s been movies, social media content, and even a whole movement dedicated to people not fitting into the height beauty standard set up by society. It’s cool to see celebrities break these stereotypes like Tom Holland, Joe Jonas, and Zendaya. It’s not our fault that we were born with a specific set of genes and we didn’t get enough nutrients during our time of growth. Is this the newest trend? My guy friend's lady is also bigger than him(like, her arm is twice his, he's very skinny), and the height difference between one of my girl friends and her longtime boyfriend is at least 20 cm(around 7 inches), yet never seen nor heard someone making fun of it even once....they themselves have ever been told anything negative about it. My uncle and aunt also have this size dynamic, it's pretty common in my circle of acquaitances tbh

@@DeadKraken My family is Brazilian and I grew up in Canada, in both places its hugely looked down upon for the girl to be talller. If you're the same height, people expect that she stops wearing heels altogether so that she's never taller than the man so he doesn't feel like "less of a man" with her and people will constantly comment on both of your heights (especially in Brazil). My family in Brazil constantly talk about how you need a man taller than you because you want to "better your genes not worsen them" its actually super fucked up, especially since in Brazil the average height is super short but if you're a man less than 180, you are looked down upon.

I feel like many taller girls, like myself, would benefit from self reflection and working through insecurities related to not feeling feminine and dainty enough, which is often what scares them away from dating shorter guys. The height dilemma is not and has never been a guys v girls problem, but rather a societal misconception about what straight cis couples ought to look like.

Yeah, it's not like billions of years of evolution made most males bigger than females, it's not like it's literally our primal instinct to seek a partner who is bigger than us because that indicates that it's a male, it's not like we instinctively want someone who's fit to protect us and our potential offspring and has good genes, it's all those gosh darn insecurities, self reflection will do the trick.

I'm 5ft7in and i always liked guys who were shorter than me too, or same height. Just watching all those women in that line-up all just like 'sorry you're too short', it's just pathetic of them to be like that, especially the woman who was shorter than that guy anyway. Shorter people supposedly have fewer heart issues, taller people are more likely to die from certain kinds of heart disorders. So it's a more ideal thing to be average or short. I wouldn't want to be tall in this world either, even at 5ft7in in England i feel like things are made for much shorter people, and shorter women especially. It was just awful! My daughter has the same disorder as I do, and she also went to Shrines as a kid, and there was talk of her getting the surgery, it wasn't necessary so I opted to wait until she was old enough to make that decision on her own! It honestly is really unhelpful people saying you're tall like a model if your just not built like one (I have very broad shoulders and a longish torso). I'm just kinda tall and buff these days and have learned how to sew so my clothes actually fit. But it took me years to figure out how I like to look and even longer to achieve that.
So now I look like a beautiful elegant lady, honestly I find a lot of trans women are much more relatable in how they talk about femininity and presenting as feminine without just being swallowed up by the concept. Achieving peace with how you look and express yourself takes a long time. And obs my experience isn't really the same...I just found it really helpful, and I'm always blown away with how respectful and understanding some trans women are when talking about different aspects of femininity and actual female bodies (e.g. post birth, aging, cellulite, certain types of fat distribution) which are natural if your born afab but aren't seen as "feminine".

Her proportions and everything... sometimes if a person is very, very short or very, very tall their proportions can look a little bit weird (happens with average sized people too, just saying height may affect this as well) but there was absolutely nothing off about her proportions or anything about her appearance. Infact it's like every detail about her was perfect. Didn't see her up close so I don't mean like her eyelashes, not that detailed. Just like her arms and legs and torso were just so beautiful. Just so beautiful. It's very rare but it happens occasionally that I see someone extremely beautiful and then can't remember how they looked like as well as one would expect to remember. And I can tell it will be the case while I look at them. Because literally while I look at them it is hard to compute their looks. It's hard to process what I'm seeing. So this of course affects memory. After I can't see them anymore my recollection is very deficient. That girl was stunning.

@@micheltarget1509 I don't have any height preferences and height doesnt influence my attraction. Nearly all of the men I have dated (which has been 3) have been shorter then me in varying degrees. I've had crushes on men who ranged in height starting in 5'4 all the way to 6'0. Height really means nothing as long as I like them as a person. My first boyfriend (who I dated for 8 years until we unfortunately grew apart) was 5'7. My boyfriend now (2 years in) happens to be 6'0 but that's still shorter then me lol. It took him awhile to get used to the height difference because he has only dated short women until we met lol. But overall, from my expirence, height affects nothing as long as I like them as a person. However, it does take me awhile to become attracted to someone anyways. I have to be friends with someone for at least a year before I can develop romantic feelings. I never go off of physical appearance but I am still incredibly selective. So many other factors have to be met before that first date lol. I like to establish if a person is good and treats other people with respect. Do we have similar intrests? Can we respect each other's interests if they aren't similar? Can our lifestyles work together? Can we respect each other's boundaries? Can we communicate well? Are we respectful of eachother? These are things I like to establish through friendship and physical things like height have never influenced that decision lol. @@brago_ I’m so sorry to hear that :(. I have definitely seen far too many posts about men having a hard time due to height and that’s unfortunate and uncalled for. However, I have a very different approach to dating. I have to know the person for AWHILE before I develop romantic feelings. I’m legitimately interested in personality. The hottest guy could be interested in me and I still wouldn’t date them unless we have been friends for awhile and I knew they were a good person. Appealing physical attributes are nice, but, if I don’t like them as a person, their appearance or height means absolutely nothing for me.
The guy I had a crush on who was 5’4 was an awesome dude. He and I had been friends for a couple years. He was hilarious, kind, polite, and a down to earth dude. I couldn’t help but to have a crush on him after I got to know him as a person. I did confess my feelings to him and he turned them down politely. I just wasn’t his type but that’s okay! We remained friends for a couple years after that but unfortunately moved apart as friends due to life. He moved away, we lost contact, etc. etc.
Anyways, that being said, there is always hope! Women aren’t a monolith, we all have different preferences.
I have a lot of short guy friends (5’3-5’9) who are happily married. They met their significant others in a variety of ways. It can happen! Don’t be daunted by online dating, it’s incredibly toxic, but there are a few gems out there.

I'm 5'9", and never minded my height on its own terms (though buying pants is a chore, and airplanes can be very uncomfortable), but other people made it into an issue my entire life. Interestingly, every boyfriend I've ever had has been shorter than me, but multiple guys who were my own height or just slightly taller were made insecure by my height and had no interest in dating me as a direct result of our similarities in stature. Some very bizarre cultural conditioning there.
However, where my height WAS a huge detriment was in my chosen career field. I had trained to be a professional dancer and eventually switched my focus to acting because my height was considered a major flaw (5'6" is often ideal for a lot of companies and choreographers, and the taller you get from there the bigger an issue it becomes). I was so tired of having to work three times harder to make up for my sin of being tall; acting was only slightly better though. I still ran into more closed doors than you'd believe. I got asked a few times to take off my shoes in auditions only for them to realize I was already in flats, was told that I was difficult to cast because my face projected one type and my body another, lost multiple jobs because I was as tall or taller than the men they wanted...totally ridiculous. It's no secret that society's conception of gender is messed up, but our conception of femininity especially screams, "These rules were made up by the most fragile of men."

I mean, we are in an age where actors and actresses conform way less than they did in the past, there are women like Gwendoline Christie that have made their height a major feature, instead of something to hide, social media is literally obsessed with tall women, and casting directors still send home female candidates because of height?😑

I'm from The Netherlands and I'm around 175 cm (5'8/5'9 ish i think), the average height for women here is 5'7, but a lot of them are taller and it's so interesting to me that a lot of girls in the comments that are around my height say stuff like feeling they're not 'dainty' enough. It's strange to me that height is equated with dainty, or that dainty is even a positive thing, or that height is inherently related to being feminine. That is such a non-issue here, that it feels so estranging to hear that women think that way?

    • @peggysyri3193
      @peggysyri3193 2 роки тому +14

They associate dainty with being smaller than their men (given that they are in a hetero relationship). In the Netherlands men are equally tall to their female counterparts so women taller than the average (lets say 5'4 although it depends on where you are from) will still feel small. Personally it's not a big deal, I'd date a guy my height although there aren't many 5'3 guys where I live.

It's interesting how things like height or hair are gender-reaffirming. I saw a thread mentioning hair implants and treatments for men being more gender-reaffirming and accessible than actual treatments for trans people looking for similar things. It's just something really interesting to think about. As someone who is considered short by the reigning population, especially because both my parents are very firmly *tall* I actually knew about height surgery for a long time. It was borderline illegal for a while except in certain countries because of the techniques used, but the developments have made a lot of traction and I really do think it coincides with the pressure of online dating. Height is something so massive now that I don't think used to be scrutinised the way it is today-- likewise, it wasn't a celebration for a man to be short and just... live his life being short.
there's also something very interestingly American/Euro-centric about these surgeries. dunno, growing up in a very diverse environment, I'm way more used to men two inches taller than me than seven or eight. something to think about... but anyways, great vid!

I’m very picky about a lot of things in my partner, but height just seems like such an unnecessary insecurity. I’d love to find shorter guys to do makeup with and date, but it’s hard enough finding a guy secure in his masculinity to share my interests, so I just seek out the personalities and hobbies I hope to find in a partner and compromise on the rest.

I'm a 5'11'' woman, and from my experience it's only "okay" to be tall if you're more girly. I hit my final height at around eighth grade and at the time I was super tomboyish. Coupled with the fact that I had really short hair and always wore hoodies/jeans, a girl screamed when I walked into the bathroom one day because she assumed I was a guy. At that time it devastated me and I did a complete 180 with my style - I started growing my hair out and I started wearing makeup and dresses. Suddenly, the next year at school, everyone was complimenting me (whereas before I had lots of bullies). If it happened to me today I would just laugh and be like "eff your standards". I'd consider myself at a happy medium now between being girly and tomboyish. But it seems like tall women are more acceptable the more feminine they are.
On another note, one thing that frustrates me is a trend of size differences. As you discussed, many men only like dating women who are shorter than them. I may not be quite 6ft, but even the men taller than me seem to prefer dating women who are way shorter. I don't get it. I would totally date a man shorter than me so long as he's my type and maintains himself well. Heck, I have an aunt who's 1 inch shorter than me who married a guy who's 5'7''. They've had a great marriage.

This hurts my heart. I can relate to short men as a 6 foot tall woman who doesn’t exactly fit the gender norms lol. I feel like they got it way harder though cuz as I’ve gotten older it’s definitely an advantage. I’ve dated a lot of shorter guys when I was younger and we both felt insecure because of society, it sucks. No one wanted to be seen with me. I’m glad it’s being normalized now. I remember trying to date in high school and boys rarely talked to me and adults said it was because I was “too intimidating.” I like being a tall girl now but stuck out like a sore thumb when I was younger and felt very insecure but it’s not a problem in my mid 20s lol. I feel like short dudes have it harder because their short height isn’t seen as “model-esque”

Yeah being a man at 5'7 the dating market its a bit hard. You're seen as less of a man or "too week", etc... but there's always a girls who dont care about it. Im heavily thinking about doing the surgery to be at least 5'11. That would be life changing

Personally I've never seen the issue with this. Girls argue a couple with a short guy is "lopsided" but like, with the same logic a short girl would look "lopsided" with a tall guy, and yet that is somehow ideal.
I've had crushes on guys shorter than me, and am currently dating a guy who is the same height as me, I'm taller if I wear heels. He doesn't care, I don't care, and we make each other happy. As long as we keep each other happy, that's all that matters.

It's honestly scary and surprising that a lot of people don't know height is mostly a mix of genetics and natural hormones in puberty (like, 80-90%). If your parents are short, you'll most likely also be short and vice versa (doesn't mean that if your dad is 6'4ft that you'll also be of that height, but on the taller side), also somewhat depends on your ethnicity and where you live (asian people on average are shorter than lets say swedish people). For example, my parents are pretty tall: dad is 6'0, mom is 5'9. I am 5'6 and my little brother is 6'2. It would be unlikely me or my brother would be short. While my friends parents are both shorter than 5'4 so my friend and their sibling are also on the shorter side.
You can't train yourself or grow taller whenever you want. Only thing that can significantly stunt your growth is like, chronic vitamin defficiency and diseases related to that (like rickets), we've all seen episodes of Criminal minds where a kid was trapped in a dark basement and didn't grow properly because of the lack of sunlight and a proper diet.
So yeah, fuck it, what height you are, that's what you get (unless your height really impacts your health, like some people with dwarfism or gigantism, but that's its own thing). Everything else is just loads of insecurities and complexes

I just have to be careful when shopping for clothes. For example, if i see a tshirt DRESS online and it's up to the knees on the model it will just be like a simple tshirt for me 😂 or everything that is advetised knee high (boots and socks) is not knee high for me 😂 but i love being tall and would not change it for anything. I have found many short men physically attractive. For me it's more about their looks, style and body propotions, not that they need to be taller than me. Even more than that, personality is important.
Growing up I had a short nextdoor neighbor (boy) that had growthormon injections and grew about 10 cm . This only works (from what I know) while your body is still developing.
By the way, If you are still growing and are having a risk of becoming really tall doctors can stop your growing process by an other hormon injection. I was offerd that as a tall girl but declined the offer and ended up with a hight of 178 cm.
