Time flew fast, now,in 2050 we will be amazed how CGI will come to life, and remember all these shows and will say "It's poor graphic" but it used to be our childhood memories
We are so close to complete realism that I think we will reach that point way before 2050, I think the real impressive thing will be how live video games will eventually be able to produce this level of quality, even now with the new console and pc hardware gen, it is getting really impressive, just consider how it took some of these early cgi things months to render, while now it is rendering at 30-60 fps
Games like red dead redemption 2 are already exceptional when it comes to 3D graphical matters. Depending on which media we are viewing in the future, we might not have such a different opinion. I think there are two main reasons why people don't like today's CGI. 1: An over-reliance on the medium has caused it to lose its magic. Nowadays, no one will ask "how did they do that?" when they watch a scene in a movie. 2: No one's innovating on the technology anymore (at least not many filmmakers are). As soon as CGI became realistic, we've hit a plateau.

I like how throughout the 2000s, you've got Sharkboy and Lavagirl with horrible CGI, Cars with the thousands of individually animated cars, and then there's Transformers.
The first CGI used very simple and limited material/lighting models (ie phong). They could render plastic decently (that's why they used to use toys in the animations and in toy story) but we had to wait for more advanced techniques like sub surface scattering, anysotropy, microsurface distributions, layered materials, fresnel etc to render truly realistic materials..
seems like Jar Jar would have been a better choice as he was one of the first all digital characters to share significant screen-time side by side with live actors.

Good job! And yet, I think some really important milestones are missing. Both the massive battles of lotr and gollum deserve a place here, as well as Pirates of carribean (Davy Jones in particular).
