The Godfathers of European Power Metal! I am still so happy that Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske have returned to the band after being gone for so many years. Helloween has many amazing songwriters, but in my opinion Kai Hansen is the best one. The current lineup is phenomenal and their most recent album is amazing! Excellent video !

Agree. I dont know if I am in minority here, but I always appreciated more Kai Hansen talent. Best Helloween heritage after his departure were Gamma Ray albums. Helloween was ok with Deris but real talent and outstanding music was in the Gamma Ray side (also I liked much more Scheepers and Hansen voice than Deris).

I grew up with Helloween and I thought they were the best in this genre. then I discovered Gamma Ray.
Not discovered, I was already familiar but I took a deep dive into their discography and found out compared to them Helloween is a bunch of kids having fun in kindergarten.
well, helloween is helloween but Gamma take themselves much more seriously, their music is far less cheesy and far more epic. and lyricwise they are the most red-pilled band on the planet. I mean they literally have a song about Plato's "Allegory of the cave"

Overall, Helloween really has a much more consistently good catalog of albums than many people realize. Sure, Keeper ! and 2 are legendary, but once Andi Deris took his place behind the microphone, it has been one solid release after another. "Better Than Raw" and "The Dark Ride" are particular favorites of mine, and the brand new album with the full reunion lineup is just amazing.

Perfect example of how a young band should progress. They were average players on Walls Of Jericho and by Keeper Of The Seven Keys II they were stomping a mudhole on every other Metal band musically and creatively. All the bands that sprouted from Helloween says it all. From Gamma Ray to Masterplan all excellent bands.

Great summary of my favorite band. I'd say there should have been a little extra mention on Dani Loble's work. His drumming is incredible especially on 7 Sinners. • @johnchedsey1306
    @johnchedsey1306 2 роки тому +6

Great video as always! I first found Walls of Jericho on cassette back in 1988 as a 15 year old and was instantly blown the F away by it. Markus Grosskopf should get a special mention for being one of the best bass players in all metal. Fluid, melodic and always adding some spice to their songs. He's great. Anyhow, I quickly tracked down Keeper Part 2 a month or two later and obviously also blown away. I would say that all Helloween in the 1980s is mandatory. They also have a rare accomplishment: a live release that is awesome. I Want Out Live (aka Live in the UK) captures this lineup at the best with lots of funny stage banter as well.
They disappeared off my radar after the 80s because many European metal bands lost their stateside distribution. I didn't hear Pink Bubbles or Chameleon for several years after their release. Pink Bubble is just the sound of a band clueless about what they wanted to do. However, I am one of those defenders of Chameleon. Granted, it's not a Helloween by the numbers album, but there's great songs plus Kiske's singing is outstanding throughout. If you go into it knowing it's an oddity in their discography, it'll probably sound better.
Although I somewhat enjoy Master of the Rings, I just never got into Andi Deris' trip. He's competent but it just didn't do much for me. Master, incidentally, came out with a great 9 song bonus disc with cover songs and other fun stuff that is worth tracking down. I liked the bonus disc better than the actual album.
After Master, I honestly just tuned out of the Helloween thing. I heard albums but I just couldn't really connect with them. That said, I really am curious to hear the latest one with Kiske and Hansen back on board. What I saw in this video makes me wonder if a triple vocalist approach might be the secret sauce for the band. Hopefully they will tour for it and I'll finally get to check them out live!

Kai pure genius, I admire him so much, Weikath another genius with How many tears (among others) All of them give Helloween a special and unique touch. Love them.

My first ever concert was Anthrax, Exodus, & Helloween on the Headbanger’s Ball tour in 1989. It was their Keeper of the 7 Keys tour. I was mainly there for Anthrax but I loved Helloween at the time from their awesome I Want Out video & song, but the thrash fans mostly were not & Helloween got booed, which I thought was dumb. Still though, they put on a great show & did I Want Out which made me happy.
I remember talking to Warrel Dane about a newer Helloween album & he asked if it’s happy music. I laughed & said, yeah, it kind of was.
Surprising that both Running Wild & Helloween came from Hamburg. Having been to Hamburg on the Running Wild Victory tour, I caught a second concert from Running Wild (after Osnabruck opening night when I met them) in Hamburg & the fans there weren’t 1/100th as amped as Osnabruck. Maybe they’re used to them & it’s not a big deal. But there’s not much in Hamburg other than a huge knight statue, a sex museum, and the Reeperbahn where prostitutes line a nearby street; every 20’ was another one. You walk down the street, pick your prostitute (assuming you’re single. I was with an ex) , & go off to your hotel where a police station is nearby. All legal. It was an interesting trip!

I actually stumbled onto helloween keeper 1&2 in the mid 90s back in high school, when we had bands like Testmant and Megadeth for metal and they absolutely blew my mind. I instantly fell in love with the lighter, neo-classical songs with tons of melody in the guitars and vocals. It pretty much was going against everything I heard out there at the time.

Great video, I discovered Helloween in college right as Dragonforce's debut album of all things was making the rounds on our local shareware network, and I started searching for similar bands like Stratovarius and Nightwish, which eventually led me back to Helloween. Not too long after that I picked up their recently released "Treasure Chest" best of album here in the States, and ever since then they've been without question my favorite band! Aside from a couple of their most recent releases prior to their reunion with Kai and Kiske, they've been pretty consistent in album quality.
It was such a blast going through their back catalog and the first time hearing the Keepers albums is something I'll never forget, but I gotta say the mid 90s - early 00s Deris era is criminally underrated. Aside from Keepers 1+2, the 4 albums they released with Deris before their 2nd major lineup change easily round out my Top 5 albums from the band (yes, even more than Walls of Jericho!).

Probably gonna get a lot of hate for this, but here's my discography ranking (mind you, albums being rated low doesn't mean I hate the album, Helloween is my favourite band of all time and I don't think they have a bad album, just less excellent ones):
    1. The Time of the Oath - my introduction to the band, absolutely amazing, Mission Motherland, title track and Before the War stand out, as well as Forever and One, which was, incidentally, my first Helloween song ever
    2. Helloween - all 3 singers together, it's a dream come true, Skyfall is the best song of 2021 period, I also count Pumpkins United as part of this, which was mindblowing to me when it came out
    3. Straight Out of Hell - so melodic, so powerful, so awesome, especially the title track and Burning Sun
    4. The Dark Ride - the title track is top 5 Helloween songs for me, the whole album is just a little bit less excellent than the 3 above
    5. Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part II - EAGLE FLY FREE!!!!
    6. Keeper of the Seven Keys: the Legacy - King for a 1000 years and Occasion Avenue, nuff said
    7. 7 Sinners - so heavy and amazing, hard to not like it
    8. Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I - very good, very pure
    9. Walls of Jericho - this includes the EP and Judas; How Many Tears is just a ridiculously powerful and heavy song
    10. Gambling with the Devil - The Saints is still a banger to listen to at full volume, as is Dreambound
    11. Better Than Raw - I like heavy, but it's not the best Helloween heavy album
    12. Pink Bubbles Go Ape - I don't view it as a joke album as most people seem to, but rather as a very transparent commentary on society, just look at Shit and Lobster, Kids of the Century or Mankind
    13. Rabbit Don't Come Easy - fast and loose, great; at this point I need to point out that 5-13 are pretty much interchangeable and if I made this list in a few days, there would likely be changes
    14. Master of the Rings - Andi saved the band back then, the album is good too
    15. My God-Given Right - somehow I never quite vibed with it, but very decent still
    16. Chameleon - one album has to be last, I still enjoy the album a lot though
    PUMPKINS, RISE!

I really tried to continue with them, but I just couldn't take to Deris' voice. Nothing against the guy. He's probably a top geezer. I just don't like his singing. I then checked out what Kai had been up to with Gamma Ray. Why did I not do that sooner? If you haven't, do yourself a favour and do so. The first three albums with Ralf are good, but they seem to be trying to find their way. A shame, because he's an amazing singer. Land of the Free is a flawless masterpiece. I knew the band, as soon as they released their first Ep. I was about 17, and lived in communist Hungary. A friend had a pirated copy of their Ep, and Walls of Jericho! I than emigrated to Toronto. Downtown Toronto Young st. At Sam the record man, I bought my first legit copy of "Walls of Jericho " in 1986. That cassette tape didn't come out of my ghetto blaster for about a year. I loved that album so much, the dual guitar assault, Ingo's machine-gun like drumming, the speed, the ferocity........I literally listened to that record every day, for at least a year. Than I found the Judas Ep, and also loved it ! Helloween was my favorite Heavy Metal band period ! I bought the albums of all the other German bands as well ! In the mid 80s, there were a LOT of successfull German Metal bands, and I loved most of them.
So when the first" Keeper" album came out, I didn't like the switch ! I listened to it plenty of times in my car and home, but no! I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried . When Keeper 2 came out, I bought the record, but again I just couldn't enjoy it ! This band was not the Helloween I fell in love with so long ago ! In hindsight I understand, that they had to grow, but I was into hard-core Metal like Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, etc. After Keeper 2, I never bought another Helloween record . And good thing I didn't because I just watched your very detailed documentary, and learned about the ,,Pink bubble, and Cameleon albums ! I could never like those kind of music, its just not my style . Helloween for me ended when Kay Hansen stop singing .
Thanks for the detailed, wonderful documentary

Well done, nice work! I would like to spend a word for the most underrated bassist in metal music! Markus plays sometimes real pieces of music instead of just keeping the rhythm. It is not a coincidence that sometimes the bass is REALLY loud in the mixing.
And a word on Andy: one may like his voice or not but as regards the songwriting he carried the band on his shoulders all these years, as Weiki couldn't do it all by himself (Markus has written some great songs but he is not that prolific). Andy had also the maturity not only not to oppose but to promote the reunion. He isn't fit enough for a demanding world tour and people were hoping for a reunion for decades! A talented, good and intelligent person.

As a Helloween fan since Keepers Pt. 1, I have to say, that was an excellent overview. The "I prefer this one, but this other one is good too, and a lot of people prefer that one, so check them out" approach was refreshing. For me, one of the biggest draws to Helloween is their happy/goofy/funny side, so I was really glad when "Rabbit Don't Come Easy" came out after the darker "The Dark Ride." (I love "The Dark Ride" too, but it took me more listens to really appreciate it.) I don't think you can go wrong with any Helloween album, though.
"Chameleon" might be an exception, but it really does have a lot of good songs on it. They just don't happen to be what most of us expect/want from Helloween, or any metal band, for that matter. But, taken independently, there's some great music on the album. Also, I really like the somewhat-less-maligned "Pink Bubbles Go Ape." To me, the vaguely neoclassical bonus track "Sh*t and Lobster" alone is worth the price of the album.
    Helloween really is awesome.

For no other reason that the title track is one of the most underrated Helloween songs of all time. Also it's the "experimental" album of Andi's tenure at Helloween... I personally had a very hard time accepting Sasha into the band. About Fang Face - the mask itself was made by a Halloween mask company called Be Something Studios (today it’s called Zagone Studios). They sold a mask called ‘fang face’ which was used in the cult metal horror movie Rocktober Blood from 1984. If I remember correctly one of the members of Helloween bought the mask in the US, but it was never really a proper mascot, since it wasn’t made for the band and was already associated with a movie.
Not a fact but an opinion, the theme song to Rocktober Blood (I’m Back by the band Sorcery) is the best metal song ever made for a movie.
