Metal School - Raven

- Опубліковано 9 лис 2021
- Originally from Newcastle, England, and formed in 1974, Raven has been jumping around on stage since before it was cool. Widely considered to be an early influence on thrash metal, Raven took that energy and speed and combined it with catchy hooks, compelling songwriting, and creative guitar solos. While their early albums are absolutely required listening for anyone into fast melodic metal, Raven is still putting out heavy, catchy albums today. If you're unfamiliar with these often overlooked NWOBHM legends, buckle in and get ready to rock until you drop as we delve into their history and awesome albums.

I met the Gallagher brothers by chance on a night walk in East Vancouver, talked to them and their drummer from fear factory. They looked surprised that I knew who they were, they did a gig in this hall near my house and it was super cool meeting some heavy metal legends.
I saw Raven on the "Stay Hard" tour when they came to Dallas. John was already using the wireless headset. During a bass solo he disappeared off the stage but kept playing and singing/talking/yelling into the mic. All of the sudden everybody turned around and looked to the back of the venue. He had made his way all the way to the nosebleed section, found a small kid up there, picked him up and brought him down to the lower level all while still one-handing the bass and singing. It was greatness.
That made me feel good, I'll take it 😂
Dang! What year was that and what venue do you think it was at?
@@undergroundunlimited2282 It would have been 1985. As far as the venue I forget the name but it was a pretty good sized theater.
I want to say it was around the Greenville Avenue area. I remember it being north of downtown and Greenville Avenue is due north of downtown Big D.
@@Jaymze13 cool, there were a couple of spots down there you could see some great bands. The basement was a cool joint.
Was it during "Break The Chain"?, he did the same thing in Grand Rapids he was in the middle of the floor jamming with fans!!
Production on the first few raven albums was absolutely perfect for capturing that noisy, energetic club-band sound. Honestly, more modern bands should take a page from that low-budget sound
The problem is you can't just make that happen it's a distinct accident that happens when recording in a cheap crummy Studio
Doctor says he'll never walk again, gets out of his wheelchair onstage doing an awesome solo. That's a badass if I've ever seen one.
When I was a kid they opened up for Judas Priest. I was too young to attend but some older friends of mine went and although they felt that their outfits were totally ridiculous, they said they did well. Back in the '80s, you really had to kick ass for anyone to slightly like you when you opened for a huge band like Judas Priest. Too bad I missed out.
The Raven Gallagher Brothers>The Oasis Gallagher Brothers
Jordies > Mancs over all. Venom, Saxon, Tigers from Pang Tang, Satan.
@@murray9807 I know like Newcastle upon tyrne has produced some of the best metal ever!
@@murray9807 Saxon are definitely not Geordies.
Yeah oasis sucks donkey balls a lot like everyday hard
.... i thought it was Roger Waters....
33:50 Their live album “Live at the Inferno” should also be included on the must-listen list. Excellent album.
I agree.
Totally agree, this was one of their best albums.
This. Why did it not get a mention?
Raven "Wiped Out" LP is amazing. A classic
No doubt! This album kills, but the production is Horrible!!
@@bradharrison1579 Even with the flawed production it's my fave!
Stumbled on a 2nd-hand 'Architect of Fear' in a recycle store, bought it on a whim without having heard it. Great album, still have it on the shelves.
These guys have it figured out no matter how old get " Your Never To Old To Rock n Roll " ! I love it 🤟
I had the privilege of going to school with with John and Mark, memories of the Slatyford 6th form common room in the hot summers of the mid 70's when everyone in there played guitar, bass or was musical in some way. Loved their music over all of these years and often wished I had had the same guts to stick with music as they have. It's good to think that guys from Newcastle stuck it out and made such a massive mark on metal music.
This band is indestructible and bulletproof......more than 40 years, and they are still with same energy and power....amazing job. Thanks a lot!
Formed in 74 almost 50 yrs!!
This was pretty cool, thank you @Metal School !
I had the pleasure of working with them on their latest release, and the energy these guys have is ridiculous, both live and in the studio.
Nicest most down to earth blokes too!
What a great little biography on a GREAT NWOBHM band!
I wanted to go to sleep...
Looks like I have to stay awake for a bit more ;)
Both Holocaust and Raven are my favorites Metal bands from UK. Architect of Fear is a masterpiece!
I always think back to the interview Bruce Dickinson did with this band. Very underrated group. Great video.
Tokyo Blade really deserves an episode, the first 2 albums (as well as ...The Night Before with Marsh on vocals) are undeniable masterpieces
YES
The best looking of the 3 covered his face with a hockey mask
Well done. All this time I thought they were Australian. Live At The Inferno is a classic.
Metal School's class is the only one that I look forward to 🤘
Goddamn Raven are the best! There is no other band like them, they have something special and unique. The energy is unreal, even live to this day! Mike is a madman, I love Wacko and Joe, but Mike has that up tempo thing going on that just gets me going. The last two albums are amazing. My all time favorite is Nothing Exceeds- a unique masterpiece like nothing else! Killer video for a killer band!!! Cheers- keep up the good work!
I'm surprised this guy didn't mention Raven's Live album Live At The Inferno that's definitely a treasure right there🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love Raven. They don't get as much love as their contemporaries
I would take the "Live at the Inferno" Album to a lonely Island 😊😊 I love this Band
Sledgehammer Rock is f**kin ridiculous power and still kills me everytime I listen! And I have to hear it often
I was a huge fan of Raven. Literally 0 of my friends had any idea who they were.
All for one is one of my favorite early 80’s metal albums. Run silent, run deep…..what a song!
I can't say I'm their oldest fan, but I'm one of them. I saw them at the Brooklyn Zoo when they first came to the US. it was insane. John had that explorer bass with the trem. His solo blew my mind. I think he's much better than Billy Sheehan and I LOVE Billy. Any time they played in NYC I was there. The L'amour shows were always a blast. I was at the Roseland show where Anthrax and Metallica opened for THEM! Live at the inferno is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and it still is in the CD holder in my car. . I'm surprised it was omitted here. People shit all over Pack is back but it was almost like a prog album at times. Was it the right album at the time? Absolutely not! But still a great album. I lost contact with them in the 90's because I was in the Army and doing other things. The next time I saw them was at the L'amour in Staten Island. There were maybe 30 people there but they played like they were playing a stadium. I got to hang out with them back stage for a few minutes and I was totally awe struck. I didn't see them again until they were playing at the Vets club in Oneida NY on the Extermination tour. Once again for a small audience, but it mean't the world to me. I got to hang out with them for a little while afterward. Mark is truly an inspirational guy, coming back after a tragic, almosr career ending accident. John is one of my all time heros but they are the most humble guys when you meet them. Real gentlemen. They played Brooklyn last week but I couldn't go because I was away on a job. I'm glad to see them keep going. As far as home work with this band, it's been done for 40 years. The single for crazy world got me hooked. Their first 4 albums didn't leave my turn table until I got out of high school. I got everything up to pack is back on vinyl and I have everything except Glow on disc. I wish I could find that one. Then my collection would be complete. You can follow them at Ravenlunatics.com. And if you ever get a chance to see them live do it. they don't make them like Raven any more. Extra Extra credit, Party killers was a fans only album of covers that came out right before Extermination. If you can find that one you are a true RAVEN LUNATIC! Cheers. ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP!
Just saw them the other night in Atlanta. They absolutely kicked ass.
Their new album Metal City is killer as is the album Extermination!
Nice! They're still rocking after all these years? I can't say that I'm surprised. How big was the venue, Jay? Was Raven the headline band?
The Darkness' whole thing makes a lot more sense after learning about Raven.
You should do a video about the band RANDY from Denmark. they're a kick ass band that a lot of people dont know about but should.
My band opened for them in 2018 in Syracuse NY. These guys still sound great and definitely had the stage presence of old.
Listened to Raven in high school. Always respect to the 3 piece band. After years together and many albums, they really do keep getting better. You don't often see that with other bands.
Saw them for the third time last night. I don't know what the fuck they're on, but the older they get, the faster and more energetic they get. I can't name a single other band with that level of power. Raven are in a league of their own, and a true never-miss whenever they come to town.
I can confirm. Since 2010, I’ve seen them 13 times. The last one being only a few weeks ago - on their 50th anniversary- and they did one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Of 13 times, every show was amazing - but this last one was mind blowing. They are one of the few old school groups that regularly tour through the Carolina’s. Best live band.
@@4825ph That's the best thing about them being Northern Virginia? based now. They tour the East coast more or less yearly when there isn't a plague in the way.
All for one est le meilleur album pour moi,et je suis fan depuis 83,et je les ai vu sur scène il y a quelques années, j ai même les autographes, respect.
My close friend's band Burning Sunday just recently opened for Raven in El Paso TX.
Great band from my neck of the woods
Who can ever forget their collaboration with Udo Dirkscheider to sing “ Born to Be wild “.
I had to be the 667th like. Great piece on this under-known and foundational band.
I saw raven and Metallica....kill'em all for one tour 1984 at the ritz theater in Austin Texas.......snuck my dads car out and me and a bunch of my friends went ....awesome show and I still have the t shirt from the show .....I only wore it like 3 times then put it up .....
Hasselvander was the missing piece that Raven needed in the mid 80's. He helped them realize their heavier side and better melody
A lot of people like Wacko's style but I think Joe is a more solid drummer. He also contributed a good bit to the songwriting, especially on Arcitect of Fear. Great guy as well.
Another fan of Joe Hasselvander. Incredible double-kick drummer
When I herd Ravens 1st 2 albums I knew it was b4 it's time and really thought that's where metal was gonna end up. It never did! They helped by selling out!
I love this channel for covering some of these great old bands that kinda slip under the radar of the heavy metal collective unconscious, and Raven is a great example... I was incredibly surprised to find out they weren't just still releasing albums after the '80s, they are still releasing new albums to this day! They were surely highly influential on the speed and thrash metal thing - contemporaries of Motorhead and Venom, managing to do much the same thing that those more famous bands did but in their own unique way - but somehow almost nobody ever seems to remember who they are. Sure, that athletic gimmick was never going to carry them far into the cynical '80s and was bound to disappear fast, but Raven had more going for them than just goofy costume uniforms, with some really solid early extreme metal without straying far from their original sound even through the difficult 1990s, and they really had talent, personality, and a stage presence and energy that should have left a longer lasting impression on historians, audiences, and critics than they somehow did. It's sad to hear about some of the tragedies to hit the band over the decades - heart attacks and injuries and so on - but it's great to see that Raven are still around and still sound great!
Do a video on Tank. They're one of those underrated 80s NWOBHM bands that don't get a lot of attention.
👍🤘
Yes!!! TANK !
Seems underrated but for the fans who dig into the Metal, pure roots , we all know them, so let’s keep spread the word about them .
I second this.
I saw Raven, Tank, and Motörhead, Leeds, possibly ‘81?
Thankful for bands like enforcer which seem to cary on this caliber of metal. Love the old school sound.
The crazy thing is that that had no idea this band existed until last year, when UA-cam sent "Metal City" my way. I have since acquired all of the previous albums that I could find in print and on eBay. They're playing out my way this coming week. I plan on going to two of the shows.
Nobody's hero is a bad ass song💥💪🎸
All For One is one of my favorite albums. That bridge on Run Silent, Run Deep is one of my favorite guitar parts. Also love the dive bomb Mark does and holds on All For One that I call the Top Fuel dragster sound.
Still waiting on the most underrated band over the last nearly 40 years and that is W.A.S.P. Everyone seems to forget about them but they are still gong strong and Blackie has the best metal voice in the business. Thanks from Australia.
My band Morbid Cross is opening up for them in Clifton nj on the 17th can’t fucking wait. I grew up with raven!
I just saw Raven for the first time last week after being a fan since 1984 and it was absolutely intense. The nicest man in the world playing the most banana times music
Haha totally! Yeah, John is awesome. I got to meet him at the last show of theirs I saw
@MetalSchoolChannel both he and his brother were super nice and so was Mike.
We flew to fla to see em last week. The new cd is hard fast af and was recorded well.. Super nice guys .gotta get them on the map again
I had the 7" Born To Be Wild picture disc backed with the excellent Inquisitor but I also used to like going to record fairs. I guess, much like this band and many others, we all made some missteps in the 90's.
Can't go wrong going to class in Metal School. Never heard of these guys, definitely gonna check them out now. Great video.
Never heard of Raven!? Metal school is where you belong.
no problem, formed
early '70s 😁

You’re not missing much. Basic Rock
@@daveg4236 basic rock!? They are metal.
Yeah!!! Raised on wiped out. The new albums sound great again, thx 4 this doc! Indeed Mark is a great player en the sheer fun of the old Raven sound is turbo cool!
Massively under-rated act. I have loved them ever since they released 'Don't Need Your Money', which was one of the most important singles of the NWOBHM genre. I bought my copy, along with the first two albums directly from Neat Records as they had no local suppliers in my area of the UK and they sent me Raven stickers and badges as well. Such an energetic band. You can't go wrong with any of the albums, but I will personally always go to the debut as they were the forerunners of thrash and at the time I had just not heard anything ese like it - looking back from 2021 it is hard to understand just how groundbreaking it was.
I've had the pleasure of casually hanging with Wacko on many occasions about 10 years ago, even before I knew he was in Raven. It was definitely a thrill to discover that the chap in some local cover band i went to see at a dive bar was once a rock legend, touring the globe with Maiden and Metallica in the 80s. He is a hell of a nice guy and super humble.
Raven kick ass and I will get all of there albums. 😀👍🤘🎸
🤞🏼
Even though I've been into rock & metal since the mid 80s and they have a HUGE catalog, I didn't discover them until 2021 somehow. Seems like there's a lot of great songs and I like how they haven't really changed their style over the years or gotten mellower over the years like some hard bands do. I like Everything Louder the best, then probably have to go old school with Rock Until You Drop. Thunder Down Under probably is my favorite song. And they put out another album in 2023! Awesome
Same. I knew of them as a kid through the Metal Magazines I bought, but never actually listened to them. My loss!!! They’re the essence of Heavy Metal, great songs, great albums. They NEVER ran out of “rocket sauce”. Their longevity is incredible and unparalleled. I will start listening to them now. Better late than never!!!
"Stay Hard" was one of my first "Metal" albums, love it!
Raven is one of the best! Those early albums still sound insane!
Raven have so many classics which are so underrated, their music just kicks ass. The riff on Into The Jaws Of Death is just killer.
"All For One" is my favorite album from them!! Just so catchy n heavy!!
All for One is near perfection.
Hell patrol some serious vocal hang time awesome 🤘 🇬🇧
That's my favorite band
rock till u drop and on and one are great tunes
In my top 10 favorite bands! Love’em! Killer rock and roll. Rock Until You Drop is a fantastic record!
Iove your music forever 🎸🔥♥️🤘💯
Growing up in this time frame, no idea how I missed these dudes. Thank you for this!!!
Raven makes me so happy!!! Thanks for this episode! ❤️📻🎶🔥🎸
seen these guys twice live. amazing live, and the nicest guys off stage :)
Awesome band saw live once with ozzy 🇬🇧 🤘
Saw them with Testament and Sanctuary in Grand Rapids MI Stadium Arena Annex when I was 16, I am 52 now!
I LOVE their firrst two albums and other period tracks (Crazy World, Inquisitor).
The All For One was quite a bit of a let down, ugly drums and the unhinged wildness was gone.
They've never sounded as wild again as on those first two albums.
But a band you should do an in-depth album history.
OVERKILL
over the years their music is just getting better and heavier.
But just a suggestion.
31:37 The fact that the music video for Metal City was shot in Newcastle, the town where Raven, and their first label, Neat Records originates in, just adds another layer to it. With the fact that Neat is probably one of the most well known labels of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, you could say that its home, Newcastle England, is Metal City.
Interesting! Didn’t put that together
Had a beer with Mark Gallagher when they played my local metal bar, what a great f**king guy and amazing guitarist 🤘🎸🍺
Wiped Out will always be my favorite
How have I never heard about that band before? This is great! I feel like I missed out on a lot of great stuff.
This is why Toon fans turned to Horsepunchers....lol just funnin. Very cool to see em STILL performing, very fun band, cool blokes as well. ty for the share.
The Pack is Back is one of my fave records of all time. My older brother stole a hand full of cassettes from a store and it was in the stack lol he gave it to me. It was one of my intro albums into NWOBHM and i still love it and have it shuffled into my rotation. Ive deep dived in recent years thru their catalog but the pack is back is one of my forever albums
Saw Raven during the Kill Em All For One tour with Metallica opening in 1983. They came back to SF a year later to headline Anthrax’s first stop in the Bay Area with Exodus opening. Neither band had seen the chaos Exodus caused when people stage dived and moshed.
I like Metal School's videos and hope it can do a series on the thrash bands of the 1980s, of which there are many notable ones: Destruction, Kreator, Possessed, Death Angel, Sacrifice, Exodus, etc.
I'll always remermber "All for one, one for all, as solid as a rock the swords in the aiiiiiiirrr"
First albums introduction with Raven is ALL FOR ONE
and LIVE AT THE INFERNO 🇨🇦🤘😎🤘🇨🇦
Heavy metal on a telecaster! Love it!
Oh i love pack is back yeah its over commercialized but it does have some hidden gems in it.
Run silent run deep bridge is al Rush which was brilliant
I first saw these guys in the summer of 1983, on the 'Kill "Em All For One tour. Metallica was the opener. It was at a skating rink in my home town of Old Bridge, NJ. Metallica held their own that night. I think it was their 3rd or 4th show upon moving to New Jersey. Raven absolutely dominated on that evening. Not only were the songs fast, but they were also incredibly TIGHT. Saw them again in New York about a year later and still to this day it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
Raven were probably the tightest NWOBHM band, at least in my opinion.
I had tickets to that show, but couldn't get a ride... I didn't have my DL yet.
I was 13 and was there
@@drewwhite2228 I was 13 too, but wasn't there, i was un Tijuana! Jajajaja!
I tried to get into Raven back in the 80s when I was experimenting with bands I never heard of, and the first album I bought was The Pack is Back. I hated that album. It was the cheesiest music I ever heard, and I never again bought another Raven album. Years later on UA-cam, I find out that they actually have some kick ass music out there. lol I guess I picked the wrong album for my first impression. hahaha
Great video!!! Long live RAVEN
Great video! Was my favorite band back when I wore out the “All for one” album. Lucky enough to have been in the front row when they played a small club, the legendary “Living Room” in RI. Still treasure my tour shirts, a couple signed records, & even a Wacko hockey pad. Unfortunately, I like many, lost interest after Atlantic added those stupid horns. But, thanks to this video there’s certainly some newer, great sounding heavy material to add to my iPod. Thanks again! 🤘🤘
Great band!! Legends!! My favorite track is - On and on!! For me the Stay Hard album has to be my choice of Raven albums.
It go on and on and on!
Damn that was a helluva ride...
Wow! Great video. I'm shocked these guys never made it as big as some of the other thrash bands. They blow some of them away, especially Metallica.
Haha, yeah right.
It was the same thing with Anvil, and somewhat with Anthrax - the fun side, the goofiness kept them from selling more records.
I bought Lifes a bitch in the 80s and I loved Pick your window.
you're leaving
Man you nailed this one! \m/ Thank you! You did leave out "Live at the Inferno" but man you did an awesome job!
One of my FAVORITE metal bands I unfortunately, never got to see :(
seen these guys in Europe when I was in the USAF very high energy !! and their fun to watch
What a band! They are a mix between Anvil, Motörhead and early Maiden. I have actually never heard their music before, but this is great!
Raven already existed before all these bands ! Gallaghers brothers are the pioneers of "speed metal".
