  • Everyone knows The Final Countdown, but how much do you know about the band who played the song? Find out how Swedish hard rock group, Europe, went from winning a televised rock band competition in Sweden to becoming one of the biggest hair metal bands in the world, just in time for grunge to take over. Discover what Joey Tempest did in the 90s and what made Europe get back together in 2003 plus lots more!
    *Yes, I know that's not Peter Olsson in the picture. I searched high and low for a picture of Peter and thought I'd found one. For whatever reason, I never noticed that it's clearly John Level. But I am aware of it. Sorry!*

    A great video with most of the facts correct and observant analysis to go with it.
    I also respect you having a strong opinion about Kee as a guitarist compared to Norum as he's not from the hard rock Gary Moore/Michael Schenker school as John Norum (he's clearly more of a Jeff Beck type player at heart) - but considering him average or boring is something I can't understand. I can understand not liking his melodic major scale solos like Superstitious for being too poppy and sweet, but his solo on Ready Or Not for example easily goes toe to toe against Norum's bluesy shredding as well. IMO he's one of the greatest guitarists ever. It's just the first time I've seen him being called kinda boring, which I don't get at all.
    Btw, I forget what a great guitarist Joey Tempest is as well, the clip of him just casually riffing on 7 Doors Hotel on acoustic is astonishingly good. There's also some clips of him playing absolutely fiery blues licks in soundchecks. Figures, as he's a proper genius level musician who plays every instrument and wrote a great majority of the songs just by himself. So much of Europe is just based on Joey's vision and musicality that I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had control freak tendencies in the 80s.

    • @MetalSchoolChannel
      @MetalSchoolChannel  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah, it seems I didn’t give Kee a fair chance initially. If I was doing the video now, I’d do a bit more research on him. Also, as this video took me quite a while, I spent a lot of time watching those early Norum solos and for whatever reason they just really resonated with me haha.

    • @larsbonnet17
      @larsbonnet17 2 роки тому

      I think Kee is definitely better than average as a player, but I also think his playing is very boring. Some demanding tapping licks and amazing fluent runs, but I absolutely hate his tone and many of the melodies. That said I still listen to ”Out of this world” from time to time and enjoy some of it. Hate the overall sound of the album though. Oh, and that bumblebee solo Kee used to play... What a waste of time.

    One of the things I've always loved about this band is how many different styles they've tried since the beginning. Their early 80s stuff were the heaviest, balls out euro-metal albums they would ever try. The mid to late 80s (Final Countdown and Out Of This World) were the most commercially inclined they would ever do. Good, but not great . Prisoners In Paradise is largely forgettable. Their comeback albums from 2004 to now have all shown a musical progression from commercial (but heavy) modern guitar rock , to more laid-back, but really well done blues-oriented (Last Look At Eden to Bag Of Bones). And their last two albums-War Of Kings and Walk This Earth (my favorites since their comeback) have this adventurous 70s proto-metal sound of Rainbow and Purple, which is Europe at their most natural. So, in a nutshell, they are an incredibly talented band that has something for almost every fan of Rock and Metal. And their live albums (Almost Unplugged and Live At Sweden Rock) are both incredible !

    Joey released "A Place to Call Home" in 1995, six years before the UK Office came out in 2001, it sounds like Ricky Gervais and the office tried to steal his melody! I can't believe that!

    Some additional details for you here, Zack, from this active Canadian EUROPE fan and researcher.
    There was one error in the front part of this video, Zack....you used a pic of John Leven as a stand-in for Peter Olsson. It might've been better to just use a stock text screen saying something like 'Peter Olsson-Photo Not Available'.
    In terms of Peter, he had actually broke up with his girlfriend before she started dating Joey, and he lapsed into alcoholism to cope, but he took full responsibility for his behavior later on, when he gained the wisdom that comes with dealing with one's past. His musical direction was more into 'guitar masturbation', whatever that is, and didn't get the idea of playing choruses with his bass. He'd also end up bouncing around from band to band, before I think retiring from the industry.
    With Mic Michaeli, his role was more of an expansion slot, created when he took keyboard duties off Joey's hands, because Joey was also the group's original keyboard player, which kind of made things awkward during live shows, where Joey was probably hiding behind the bank of keys during some songs.
    For Tony, and this is just merely speculation on my part, but I think that the TRUE reason he left was because the idea of taking his talent worldwide scared him badly, and his ambivalence to his duties then probably caused him to become lazy. He probably was too afraid to admit such to those he'd been with in the band for those 5 years, and just couldn't do it, fearing they'd be pissed off with him, to the point of probably wanting to fistfight him over it. So, Tony just simply faded off, and never returned to the stage with the group again(outside of doing 2 autograph projects for the 30th anniversary of the debut album for the group AND a 10-guitar charity auction, both in 2013).
    Also, another big reason Norum left the group on Oct. 31, 1986 was that it was eventually found out that EUROPE's manager at the time, a Thomas Erdtman, ended up having the contracts written to where the money that the group made(in which both Norum and Marcello got dinged by this) was funnelled into his own bank account. Norum once caught Thomas spending their money to take his(Norum's) mom out on a date somewhere.
    As for Marcello, he actually had some personal issues with the group regarding band seniority, where he was promised, by Erdtman, that he'd get to have an elevated role in the group upon entry into it(getting his songs on albums, writing credits, et al), only to be told by the band members that that wasn't going to happen. He got conflicted, and started binging on alcohol and drugs to try to cope with it, but that stuff eventually took over his mentality, screwing him up.
    It was in 1989 that the group voted 5-0 to terminate Erdtman's services.
    Also, when EUROPE went on hiatus on Mar. 15, 1992 in Portsmouth, England after the last leg of the 'Prisoners In Paradise' tour, the members found out, thanks mostly to Erdtman, that they had a lot of high taxes to pay when they got back to Sweden. They lost a LOT of stuff they accumulated while on the road, and it took them YEARS to pay off those bills. All of them eventually did though, and they'll say now that that doesn't affect them anymore.
    EUROPE also, after Dec. 31, 1999's concert with both Norum and Marcello present(a pure fans' ultimate dream, by the way...XD) appeared at Stockholm's Hard Rock Cafe to finally collect their awards for sales of the compilation album '1982-1992', which had 17 tracks on it from all eras of the group.
    In terms of Kee Marcello, after it was announced in 2003 that EUROPE would get back together full time with Norum at guitar, Kee stated that he didn't stand for the same creative and musical direction that EUROPE currently performs in concerts today, and that he said there were talks of the group going to a 6-member version for a while, but he said he couldn't do it, feeling like he was probably going to encroach on Norum's turf, and said he figured that Norum would feel the same way.
    But at the same time, Kee said that he was happy that the EUROPE band name and brand was active once again, and performing in front of millions of happy fans all around the world.
    Just figured I'd help you fill in some gaps here, Zack. =)
    And sorry for the long read, but it was necessary here. XB

      There's a bit of guesswork in your post. I'll add some things.
      • Norum left because he didn't want to be doing playback and interview tours without shows - stated many times by all concerned.
      • Kee bought Norum's share of the band for 1,000,000 krona so business wise - he did have an equal share but not a creative one.
      • The Millenium reunion with both guitarists was done in exchange for the band's debt being paid.
      • Marcel Jacob (Norum collaborator and one time bassist for the band before swapping back with Leven) stated on the melodicrock forum before his untimely passing that Tempest, Leven, Michaeli and Haugland were split on which guitarist to get back. Joey and John wanted Norum, Mic and Ian wanted Kee. Joey suggested the two-guitar lineup as a compromise but Norum refused to share solos and said "only if he plays chords". Kee was let go the day before they did their "reunion" photoshoot and has never been paid back his 1M kr. The only member he's had contact with since is Ian.

    Kee Marcello was an incredible player! His guitar work on "Out of This World" is unmatched. His tapping technique in solos for "More Than Meets the Eye" and "Just the Beginning" to me were a premier to what Nuno would be doing with Extreme years later. He certainly could write great melodies in his solos. Not taking anything away from John Norum. I loved his playing as well but I think Kee did contribute a lot more than just "Flight of the Bumblebee". He took Europe to the next level!

    Great band ! I remember buying the final countdown on cassette back in 87 and loved it , at nights I would wake up at around midnight and hear the album being played downstairs in my house and I didn't know if I was dreaming or not so I snuck out of bed ( I was only 11 at this point) and walked downstairs to find my mum cranking the song the final countdown and dancing around the room ....by herself!! I never told her I knew she was doing this , my mum was rather conservative and rock and metal music was the last thing she would get into but for some reason this song spoke to her on a different level .
    The funny thing is the cassette was in my room next to my tape player so she would have had to sneak past me to grab it and then put it back !
    I would wake up to the muffled sound of that album playing for weeks on end but I just left her to it .
    She died in 2007 so it's a cool memory I have of her just not giving a shit and feeling the power of this awesome band .
    And how good is that 7 door Hotel song that Joey plays on acoustic!??
    And I wonder if Ricky Gervais was a closeted Europe fan??
    Anyway, great review!
