  • A detailed look at the MGB GT model history focusing on changes over the years and the different variants of the MGB. Let me know in the comments anything I've missed out (RV8?) or got wrong?! There will be a heap of stuff for non-UK markets that I'm just not familiar with so let me know :-)

    The North American spec cars got the single carb and higher ride height in 1975 with the rubber bumpers. MGB`s still raced in E class in the SCCA or Sports Car Club of America into the early 70's. If my memory serves me well they won the class a few times. An MGB also won the 72 hour Marathon de Route at the Neurbering outlasting faster cars in 66 or 67. For the B it was about endurance not speed, you gotta finish. Good video!

      Reed Rickborn for some reason this comment went to review, sorry for not approving it sooner, thanks for the info! Yes I heard MGBs did ok in racing in the 60s but had no idea about success in America in the early 70s, they seemed to hold their own against some fancier metal at the Goodwood Revival this year that’s for sure! Thanks for watching and for the comment 👍😎

      Reed Rickborn... the RBB was introduced in mid 1974.

    • @reedrickborn

      @@jeffhildreth9244 Jeff thats technically true but most new model years started production in the year before the actual calendar year. My 70 B was produced in December of 1969. The 70 model year production started in September of 1969.
      The production of rubber bumper cars were called 1974 1/2 and started in September 1974. In the Clausager book 1974 seems to be the only year that was given a 1/2 designation. I had a friend who purchased a new rubber bumper car in the fall of 1974 and it was titled as a 1975. At least that's how the DMV in Atlanta did it back then.

    My first car after passing my driving test in 1964 was a used MGB roadster with the 3-bearing crank in red with wire wheels. Of course I knew nothing about cranshafts at age 17! To my great disappointment the bearings started to fail after only about 6 months with low oil pressure and light knocking noises! But then we only knew one way to drive back in the day - foot flat on the floor!
    I traded it in for a new 1965 MGB roadster in BRG with wires and of course the 5-bearing crankshaft. I never felt any difference in "revvability" between the two engines however and used that car as my daily driver without problems in Europe and around Britain, for 40 000 miles or so. I modified the engine on that with a higher compression ratio and larger SUs and a mild road/race camshaft from BMC.
    Later I upgraded in terms of performance to a Sunbeam Tiger Mk1 with the 260 V8. Would love to get my hands on a good Mk1 B again though!

    • @granblogismo
      @granblogismo  3 роки тому +1

      Great stuff! Thanks for the comment, do you still have the Tiger? Rare beasts! I’ve only seen a couple and they look and sound great with performance to back it up! I’ve never had a roadster but feel I should get an open car in my collection as I’ve never had a convertible 🤔

    • @stewartw.9151
      @stewartw.9151 3 роки тому +1

      @@granblogismo No I sold the Tiger in around 1972. It was a very nice machine and would hit 140 mph (on the speedometer anyway) with acceleration to match. Much later, hankering after real performance again I built a Cobra replica with a Ford 302 V8 - one usually wore brown trousers with that thing but I drove it for 10 years until 2002!

    • @granblogismo

    Hi there, great video thank you for sharing your knowledge. As a newby to classic cars and a keen interest in the MGB GT models. What year was the 5 main bearing engine introduced?

    • @granblogismo
      @granblogismo  5 років тому +1

      Paul Johnson hi! Thanks for watching! The 5 main bearing engine I think was introduced late 1964 (October?) which means all MGB GTs have it but the earlier roadsters had the 3 bearing 👍

    What is your opinion on storing the car under a good quality cover during the winter if a garage isn't available? Thanks

    • @granblogismo
      @granblogismo  4 роки тому +2

      DavidUKesb I don’t think it’s ideal but it’s what I do! I think if you get a good quality cover that is tailor fitted for the car and make sure the car is clean and dry before fitting it it should be fine. I use the ‘storm force’ covers which are good at keeping the car dry but do break-down after a couple of years so they don’t last forever, a few owners in my local area have been using them for years without issue 👍

      Art Tafil ha no worries, I’m obviously a fan of the humble MGB and I do agree that although it may not be the best example of a British sports car it might be the quintessential British sports car good and bad! Thanks for watching and for the comment!

      In this video it’s an ‘Autodromo Stradale’ probably my favourite brand actually, I also have a ‘Monoposto’ by the sane company which is the black faced dial with red ‘rev limit’ line! Lately I’ve got some Garmin fitness watch which is good for exercise phone notifications but doesn’t beat a good mechanical watch!

      @@granblogismo Thx for the reply, I knew I had seen that watch before but couldn't place the brand. I frequent some watch forums as well, and see many attractive watches daily, just can't keep all the micro brands in my pea sized brain! A few of my favorites include Steinhart, in particular their Racetimer, Christopher Ward, and Alpina. Like cool cars, motorbikes and planes, there are just way too many cool watches for one collect ;-)

      bspaet yep, I think it’s a matter of personal taste, I too love the wire wheels but for practical reasons (and the fact my wires are past their best) I got the minilites as a cheaper alternative but I’ve ended up liking them more than I thought I would!
