Restored RHD 1967 MGB GT - One Take

- Опубліковано 9 жов 2016
- The MGB GT is a collector car to look out for. Though small, underpowered, and with hugely varying build quality, their charm and style will undoubtedly raise their value in the future. This right-hand drive example was lovingly restored to stock configuration, with the exception of slightly wider tires for a bit more grip.

Programmer drives an old british car to rebel against automation. My kinda guy.
i'm with ya on that.
What's with the vents under the dash ?
Melinda Manthey An A/C that cost a lot and doesn’t do a very good job cooling.
Wow. Super cool car, cool owner...."Rebellion against automation" is an idea that really speaks to me.
The Smoking Tire is getting better all the time!
The English countryside roads tends to be narrower and more bumpy! Though the gap between 3rd and 4th is wide, don't forget that, when properly maintained, the B-series engine will run almost flat-out all day so you can take 2nd up to 5.5 and then 3rd comes in at 3.5, or thereabouts, where all the torque starts. So as long as you keep the engine working the ratios aren't that badly matched to the engine. Our cars are renowned for unreliability in the USA because thy are so often neglected (in the last few years it's the same here - many classic car owners don't get their hands dirty and modern mechanics are often lost without diagnostics and don't know how to adjust tappets and points) but not so long ago, here in spanner-crazy UK, they were very, very reliable - they just need regular maintenance.
I love MGB's... They're just cool.
Just got a fun car after a number of years without. I now have a '97 Miata, a yellow MG B GT rounded the corner the other day and my heart pinned for it. My first car was a '64 "3 main" MG B.
paul austin ah but have you driven one?
@@Paul-is8wz Mr Austin goes around youtube for any video he can find of a Leyland car and says they're shit despite the fact he probably can't drive. Primarily Marinas so I'm guessing he's just someone that takes what Clarkson says as the word of god.
SF44 haha sounds like it, he’s probably angry because he hasn’t learned how to drive stick yet
@@Paul-is8wz Amusingly I discovered from another video he was commenting on that he drives a Chrysler Crossfire....
Imagine driving a Crossfire and calling an MG B girly!
I can't believe this is the first time I've seen this video! I know Tanny, the owner and he's the coolest guy. He's always helping me with my gt.
Classic cars are awesome. They have their quirks, but they are engaging to no end, and have buckets of character. You enjoy just driving them, who cares about 0-60 or lap times when you are having such a blast.
@paul austin That's his problem then.
paul austin That’s what turnouts are made for.
The MGB GT is one of the handsomest cars ever produced. Not very powerful and lacking a lot of creature comforts, but absolutely gorgeous lines.
One of the best one takes so far, the classic cars are my favourite! B GT's are lovely looking machines.
Both of my vehicles are from the 80s -- a Bronco and a 944 -- when you could still work on cars with a wrench. Had a 71 MGB. Wish I'd never gotten rid of it.
Sounds awesome! Sometimes a little 4 cylinder can sound just as good as a V8 in the right car...
I loved my British Racing Green '67 MGB, bought it used for $1200 for it '71 with 30k miles. I put on an Abarth exhaust, it sounded great and the car ran at its best in the rain. The MG line was popular when I was in HS in the late 1960's with several A's & B's in the parking lot, one friend had a straight six MGC. Hilly and twisty NJ roads were perfect for the MGB. They did need a lot of care though, it was difficult to find a used one in really good condition. Because they were inexpensive, the original owners usually didn't know much about their cars and they didn't take proper care of them. Love the toggle switches in that car!
That's a beautiful little car. It's like if the DB 5 had a little brother :)
It was often called 'the poor man's Aston Martin'
Great to see another British car episode.
I think I'll take my MGB for a spin!
Glad to see the owner embraces his car and all the pros and cons that come with it
I love these videos where matt is smiling the whole way through the drive.
Reminds me a lot of my Dad's '67 MGB Roadster. Though my dad's is US spec. Most of the B's production actually got exported, at least for the roadsters as far as I know. I helped my dad rebuild his MGB when I was young, and that is what started my love for wrenching on cars and learning how they work. Also, it started a love for classic, and British cars. I learned how to drive stick on my Dad's MGB too. That was a nightmare, since there has been a lot of work done on the engine, and it doesn't like to idle for long.
Great to see you driving some older cars Matt in addition to the modern stuff, really enjoyed this episode.
Yeah, it's a very nice change of pace.
A great way to start the reviews for the week. The more I see these cars the more I like them
WOW!!!! What a beauty......... I love old cars no matter what country from as long as cars look good
old cars are great, also they are important to study, because engineering wise almost everything has already been done before, for the most part what's changed is materials and the process of manufacturing , next rainy day take a look at your local collection if you can find one, there are lots of cool private collections out there especially larger dealerships who's owners were racing enthusiasts and see if you can get a tour, never hurts to ask. just about everyone watching is a gear head and seeing old cars ,getting really good descriptions and really digging into the engineering gives you fresh ideas you'd never have thought of.
Cool car, Cooler guy 💯
As a former owner of a '67 BGT, I really enjoyed this. Two points. I also had oversize tyres on mine, but the rears rubbed on the inner flange of the wheel arches. Does this owner have that problem? I had to cut back the flanges by 3/8" or so.
Second, you'll have much less problem with the heavy steering if you boot it hard through the bends. You might feel the back end step out a touch, but the car's handling is so forgiving that you never feel unsettled and it comes straight back on line. Safety fast !
Shane Norman When the car was painted I had the rear wheel openings relieved so the tires don't rub. The handling is very neutral. The Goodyear Eagle Sport tires are the grippyist I've ever had on this car. You really have to work hard to make them squeal.
Just looking at this car makes me smile!
I'm so delighted that this is the proper right hand drive. Americans get so weird about us driving on the left that they always say wrong side not left side, and think it is somehow amusing. Ugh.
The MGB looks great in the sunshine.
I really wanted my mom to buy an MG BGT .
She did in 1977. It was a 1974 chrome bumper car.
I used to razz all over the place in it when I was 19.
40 years later in 2017 she gave it to me , and I find myself razzing round in it at the age of 59.
I've had to change the tyres , the Bridgestones were 25 years old.
The house next door to Mom and Dad's was owned by Bridgestone UK for the CEO UK.
Kevin Novamura who was the CEO was fascinated by moms car , and he said to her one day "Norma I want your car to have Bridgestone tyres on it"
Mom and dad took it to a garage he recommended and 4 Bridgestones were fitted to it for a very cheap price .
But after 25 years I had to fit new tyres .
To sum up.
I just love the MG BGT it definitely has a soul
What a beautiful beast! I have a bright red GT and can confirm that the smile never fades. Thanks for the awesome vid, Matt!
What an awesome old car guy! That guy rocked!
Love this vid Matt. You 2 got on well and we can tell you really enjoyed "being in history" driving an old classic
Took a long time to see my car on here. And yes they are a real workout. I'm putting a Rover K series in mine at the end of this year should be really nice.
Be aware: the K series has a reputation for getting troublesome after about 75,000m. Why not keep the old girl as original as possible and have the current engine Stage II tuned? It's good for about 120bhp and still very tractable.
Don't worry about the k series like many are warning. They do have a reputation but they weren't looked after.
They run a smaller amount of coolant than other engines and if they leak (normally inlet manifold gasket first) then they get the infamous HGF
If looked after they last a long time I had one well into 100k.
There are also plenty of aftermarket options for them too.
I know about it's weaknesses. Like everything British made it has it's weaknesses. Proper maintenance and cooling along with the multi-layer head gasket pretty much solves the problem. Also buying a later engine with metal dowels instead of plastic helps a lot.
At some point maybe in 5 years or so I will supercharge it. Either that or get the 2.0 litre version which pushes out 300hp from an engine that weighs less than 100kg.
I live in the UK so I doubt it. I would be happy though if I went on holiday to the US or if he happened to be around.
You should put a Honda K series in it :-)
That was an inspiring car video! A true reflection of the MGB' s character. Bravo
What a fantastic set of corners they went through with awesome views.
Nice road.
Good video! I can relate to this guy even though I may be half his age. I've spent the last 10-11 years in machining mainly CNC machining and everyday that goes by I appreciate mechanical non computerized things more and more.
Great video, thanks for making it. I bought an MGBGT today in white with wire wheels, need some tic but I've always thought they are such a good looking car. I guess Pininfarina knew what he was doing!
This is one of my favorite hatchbacks of all time.
Never would have thought these would be that cheap, love it!
It looks like so much fun to drive!!
My MGB-GT was the most fun to drive and you don’t have to mess with the top, like the convertible I have now a 1977 MGB. Sun and wind and natural air conditioning.
Wow rolling up with a clean cut, crisp watch and tailored suit in this you'd be looking like a classy gent!
Perfect color combination, year and bumpers!
A wonderful car in which to learn to drive well. Four points keep you in the seat. Those motors take well to some modification.
You need to find yourself a Frontline LE50 MGB. Basically a MGB reimagined by Frontline. Similar to what Singer does to a 911.
Very nice, but the price is many times that of an original B.
Exactly the model/wheel/colour/interior that I want. Beautiful.
Here in the UK I know two people that have put S2000 engines in these, really cool cars. (not sure how big of a job it is though)
Gat would honestly be so sick.
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe the 1999 b18 engine from the civic.
There's a guy in the states has put one in a triumph Spitfire. 250BHP in something that weighs the same as your slipper!!
haha, the engine start was amusing. Almost as if you haven't driven a carborated car in awhile. Thanks for your videos.
I really like the colour scheme. Looks great.
Great video, really enjoyed it.
Insane road! Lovely car!
MGBs always make me smile.
beautiful car and awesome owner
If you're not careful you might enjoy yourself in that car! It did look like fun and anyone could have fun at the speeds it would be going so a great car for everybody! An all around win! Yaaahhhh!
These are wonderful vehicles... you feel like you're in an Aston Martin.
great episode
This guy is really cool
That Audi wagon with the box has my interest :) the gt is super classy too!
I am SERIOUSLY jealous of your roads!!
From the 50's onward, my grandfather always had English marks in his garage, usually multiples, and bought all his kids English cars to tool around La Jolla. My auntie had a TR3 and then a MGB GT. My Dad had an MG TF but saw too many races at Torrey Pines (look up the history of Camp Callan) and Riverside and traded that for a 356 Carrera 2 Cabriolet. He never owned another British car after that preferring Nazi sleds along with the occasional Maserati instead.
Anywoo, keep the old cars coming! Any old competition Alfa GTA's or GTV's would be amazing.
One of the best looking british cars of it's era.
wow didn't know president Snow was into clasics.....
Bob Matie Some have said that I look like Richard Dreyfus or Dr. Hammond from Jurassic Park, especially when I wear a Panama hat.
lmao Dr. Hammond from Jurassic Park, I can't unsee that, you could really mess with people with a costume on Halloween or something. Beautiful car by the way.
haha dr. hammond wow you could quite easily be his stunt double or mabey even sleep with his wife amd she wouldn't be the wiser....
Very nice colour combo silver and red...lovely
Thank you.
Excellent I am thinking of getting one . sam got me into your vlogs you have some realy interesting cars and people well done you
James Vickers
I have one for sale
909-329-7098
Cool car and awesome owner
This guy is cool! Nice car .
I adore these cars, I've had mine for 6 years
Good Lord that's a beautiful car!
This guy is refreshing!
I'd daily the shit outta this car
Nun-chuck Norris I do. It's my daily driver.
You are the real MVP dude ! Great car !
Same I daily drive a 79 rubber bumper GT. Got it as my first car.. handful on the wet country lanes to work!
Great sound!
Wow - a BGT on the Smoking Tire. And a Mk1 as well, which is the best looking of all the Bs! One minor point - they made ~500k Bs (roadsters and GTs) from '62-'80 (not 350k).
Nearer 525,000... but who's counting.I have a Series 1 1964... (pull handle doors/three main engine, 3 synchro gearbox.. these were built 62-0ct 64)
The MGB, a driving experience, ample road feedback, mechanical and engaging, but also comfortable. it isn't a racer but feels like one!
damn....thing looks super fun.
Great car with a lot of character. Do more classic German cars!!! I'd love to see a 70's Porsche RS!
oh wow look at MGB GT going, pretty quick :)
It looks very nice.
That car is so cool.
man I dream of one of these cars with a modern powertrain. Even the standard 2.4 from the Solstice would be a joy.
1:11 smiley face on the seat. Absolutely need to see. 10/10, 100/100. Best smile. BEST SMILE. DENTISTS EVERYWHERE HATE HIM!
Loved hearing Matt being tutored in the use of "keep fit" windows! The gearing made no sense though.
Considering an MGB for my second car. So beautiful and it's always been one of those cars I've looked at and wondered why they are so cheap
Hey Matt looks like you have the British Leyland bug bite. I had it bad a few years ago. Bought about 5 British classics. The triumph GT6, is still my all time favorite. I highly recommend you drive one. Looks like a tiny classic Aston Martin
Go to Sleep Matt, its 4 am in LA
dude i'm with you... fucking vampire up in this bitch.
Its on auto upload.
Oh, the sound
Love these cars
So Matt did you get one nice to see this I just purchased a 72 mgb-gt
If you plan to restore an MGB, make sure to add the Norman deLaycock Overdrive. The engine is not one for high revs and it is much happier at 70-80 mph in overdrive which is available on 3rd and 4th gears. Listening to this sound track tells you what I mean as you can hear the car needs another gear as this long stroke B series engine is screaming (until the owner mentioned the overdrive switch). With an overdrive you won't need to be messing with the valves every 6 thousand miles either - who wants to do that? (I did 60k miles in mine without touching the valves).
It's not difficult to extract another 25 to 30 percent more power by working on the inlet/exhaust and head.
This makes these cars come alive and more exciting......
Can pick one of these up right now for about 5-6 thousand pounds. Pretty good nick.
I've been in a MGB GT with a V8 (can't remember what engine, it was 4 years ago). Thing was nucking futs!
my friends dad has one goes way faster than I thought great noise too!
it would of been a Rover 3.5L V8 in it.
rembobo112 I'm pretty sure it was an engine out a Mustang, since he was a Mustang freak, and that thing hauled ass on the freeway
damn thats nice love mustangs especially from the 60's. the engine in my friends dad's car is the stock v8 you get when you bought the car from the factory but still really nice.
The common engine swap is either the Rover/Buick 3.5L or the Ford 302. Mantell Motorsports in Illinois is a company that specializes in 302 conversions.
my 74 and a half just got a full tune up the other day 👌
Nice review, really enjoyed it. also, do I see an SRT4 video coming up? Looking forward to it.
one day imma get my Red JCW-R53 on here and it will be a day matt will love
owner was super cool
Thanks Paul Giamatti
love this!
Love it! Matt, I'd love see a SRT-4 neon or even a SVT Focus, anything in the pipeline?
love the quirks 😀
That's it! I'm getting an MGB and moving to California! :D
I like this guy.
You need to drive one with a tuned up engine and sway bars and suspension work they are alot of fun. Or a ls1 conversion MGB
Or a factory 3.5 V8
I have a supercharged one coming tomorrow
I love where this is going. I have a buddy in England building a rover
v8 based twin cam twin turbo all steal beast the ultimate MGB. His car
is a story that would draw you alot of attention

I hope to get my RHD Cooper finished by the end of the year. It'd be nice to get it on the site, so hopefully I can see what you think of it. (It has 13 inch ADVAN A048s by the way.)
