Love your videos! I learn a lot. In your kayak, you sommetimes use a flexible cooler that's a good size for sheepshead. I'd like to get one. What is it? Thank you.
Most tackle shops in the area sell them, yet you can catch them for free in the tidal rivers locally. Just need a set of waders, 5 gallon bucket, and no fear of running around in 4 ft marsh grass and mud at low tide
Siick vid as always! Love the Content! The Sheep definitely move around a bunch. Seen them stacked near the 1st boat channel one day and a week later they were nowhere to be found. Later found them near 2nd boat channel.
What rod specs would you call ideal? I’ve been using 6’6” M or ML Fast/Extra Fast. don’t have any issues but always looking to improve. Don’t fish much structure over 20 feet.
Honestly I dont use a specific setup. I have tried many and really don't have a favorite anymore. At this point I like trying to catch them on random setups just for fun and I found it is much more enjoyable that way
I love watching you catch those sheepshead, you make it look so easy. One day I’m just gonna have to come out there at CBBT, I’m just scared to go by myself 😂
If you don’t have side imaging to scan the pilings is there something else you look for? Whether it’s the outer pilings or the center on tend to hold more fish. Really appreciate all the videos fairly new to kayaking an I fish out of kiptopeke mainly the ships but been eyeing the high rise as it’s close to where I launch but still learning the coefficients an tides
Traditional sonar works just fine. You can just drive past the piling close and the bigger sheeps show up just fine. I used to do it with my old hook 4 unit on my first outback
This trick also seems to help with getting those light jigs down in the water column in addition to helping you know what depth you're getting bit at. I'm not sure why but if you just try to drop the jig straight down to the bottom, most of the time it'll get carried away in the current. Whereas if you use this method, you can usually work that jig down to the fish.
Floyd, when he mentioned that being a citation he is saying it is big enough to qualify for an award from the state for being a large specimen of the species. Most states have a similar program to recognize anglers who catch big fish. You can receive a citation for most different types of fish. In order to receive one, you just need to research the requirements and follow them such as taking the fish to a certified scale and submitting an application for the citation.
Not really. Well the current is less closer to land, that is nice. But the sheeps move around a lot so no telling where they may end up. Just have to do some scouting
Thanks for the nice tutorial. Today was my 3rd try to catch sheepshead at the CBBT and I didn't do well lol. I had to use 1/4 of a blue crab because there was no fiddler crab available. How can you set the hook on this fish? I was so frustrated... I used blue crabs also on my second trip and caught 3. Still a lot to learn... Thanks for your channel! Hope see you out there one day!
The key with sheepshead is to NOT try to set the hook. Once you get a bite just start a slow and steady retrieve and they will hook themselves. Hard to do at first but you will catch a lot of sheepshead.
Another awesome video!!! I am going to start hooking my fiddler crabs like that to see if I can improve my catch rate. We have been missing a few as we go through the back and into the legs. Thanks for all of the great content in your channel
I like the 16 to 20 inch sizes myself. The larger ones should be released because they are the breeders that keep the populations going. Plus they are close to 20 years old
A lot of the times they will sit in there holes about 1 to 6 inches down. This can depend on the tide. If you take a stick or trowel and push into the ground next to the hole they will rush out to the top of the hole. I think they think it's caving in or filling with water. I use a long slender trowel. When you insert it into the ground and they emerge you can grab them. A lot of the time once I see them pop up I will push the trowel towards the hole and block them from going back in. I normally can get about 2 dozen in 10 min doing this. It takes a little trail and error but in the right location it's super easy
There was some editing in this video to keep it under 5 minutes. But yes I did catch some as far down as 35 to 40 ft after this. I also got bites as shallow as 15 ft on the same piling. The one I caught on camera was actually roughly 25 ft down
I was in Ocean City trying to do this yesterday, couldn't catch one but the water was so rough yesterday afternoon. Fishing from boat on the bridge piling was impossible yesterday
Thank you for the tutorial!
Glad it helped!
UM JUST LEARNING SHEEPSHEAD FISHING, YOU MAKE GREAT VIDEOS, 👍 THANKS,,,, I BEEN WATCHING ALL YOUR SHEEPSHEAD VIDEOS👍✌️💯

Just curious, but where do you get the fiddler crab 🦀?

Great info on getting it done. Thx

Yes they do
What kind of fish finder is this?
What does it mean when you all say situation?
Where do you buy fiddler crabs? Or do you catch them beforehand?
I catch them

Sweet video man. 👍
Have you made any changes to your livescope setup? About to purchase one for my Hobie as well...
I did upgrade to the new UHD 94 SV. It makes no change to the livescope setup but did seriously upgrade the standard transducer for sonar.
@@SouthernReelsFishing Thanks for the update! I was looking at the 94 and was worried it would be too big. Awesome to hear that its not.
I love watching you catch those sheepshead, you make it look so easy. One day I’m just gonna have to come out there at CBBT, I’m just scared to go by myself 😂
Lol I have seen pics bud I know you know whats up
What size hook do you order with the jig?
Really doesn't matter

Jessie do you bleed out your sheeps?
What are you calling a citation?

I appreciate the answer, it clears up a lot.
Another awesome video as always I always learn alot. Do you have a stretch of bridge you like better then the other?
Not really. Well the current is less closer to land, that is nice. But the sheeps move around a lot so no telling where they may end up. Just have to do some scouting
Thanks brother stay safe out there and tight lines
Have you tried using artificial crayfish lures instead of fiddler crabs
I have not. Not for fishing the pilings. I have seen them caught on artificial shrimp lures in shallower conditions though

Dont really have tp set it too hard on the big ones, just lift and keep pressure on it they usually set it themselves on their first good run
@@biffagump8B Thank you! I will try it as soon as the weather allows

How do you get out to the monitor Merrimack bridge?
how far out are you fishing along the bridge tunnel ?
Anywhere from the first boat channel all the way out to the island, honestly. They tend to move around a lot
@@SouthernReelsFishing need to go out with a friend or a group for safety then thanks
What time of day do you usually go curious because Everytime I try to take my lil boat it's like the Bering Sea Out there
What is the best size for eating?
I like the 16 to 20 inch sizes myself. The larger ones should be released because they are the breeders that keep the populations going. Plus they are close to 20 years old
@@SouthernReelsFishing GREAT ADVICE..! And thank you for informing people about the big breeders before ..its too late
I'm needing a tutorial on catching fiddler crabs. The couple of times I've tried getting them at the bait stores hasn't worked out.
Yeah, those guy in the Bait Stores don't like it when you climb up in the bait bin and try to catch their fiddler crabs! ;)
A lot of the times they will sit in there holes about 1 to 6 inches down. This can depend on the tide. Are there sheepshead in the rivers around here?
Babies maybe, I have caught small ones in brackish water.
@@SouthernReelsFishing I caught one at the Veterans bridge in Chesapeake a few days ago, it was tiny
Makin it look too easy. Lol. Skunked past 3 sheep trips in South Jersey
I have had the days myself so don't feel bad. That's when I switch to Flounder or Spades or anything lol
Why not just use a split shot?
Not heavy enough, the currents would take it away from the piling
Damn it Man !!
Check your FB page messages. Please
How do you use fiddlers for puppy drum?
You need to get you a Native man you won't have to fumble with those cables every time you want to back up a little

It is difficult in a boat. Boats tend to spook the fish much more than a kayak
@@SouthernReelsFishing does the live scan ever spook them. I have heard sonar devices scare fish
