I tried to be as thorough as possible when putting this how to sheepshead fishing guide, I wanted to cover as much as I could! In this video I go over general tips and tricks on how to find these fish and what it is that makes them such a challenge to catch for many fishermen. I then go over a detailed breakdown of each of my favorite rigs: the Carolina Rig, the Split Shot Rig, Free lining, using Sheepshead Jigs, and finally the Slip Float Rig.
I hope this videos is useful for you all and I sincerely hope it helps you be more successful on the water and become better sheepshead fishermen while also helping you to put more food on your table!

Moved to Charleston 3 years ago. Caught 1 sheepshead on rod and reel in those few years while not targeting them. Watched this video plus some of your others over the past few days. I don’t have access to a kayak, so my go to for Sheepshead is definitely the jetties. I put on a 20 lb leader and free line a shrimp about 5 feet infront of the jetties

What a great video. Lots of very detailed information.I am not a sheepshead fisherman, but now that I have moved to FL,maybe I’ll give it a try. Up North i used to fish for tog/black fish. Seems fairly similar.

When setting the bobber depth, i start with extra line, so i know its going to hit the bottom and lie the bobber sideways. Then watch the bobber and the stopper. All that line between the bobber and the stopper is how much you move the stopper to be just at the bottom plus however much you want to be off the bottom. Having a bright colored stopper helps so see from far away(i use a bright yellow srting to tie my stops). And, if you have a split shot on your leader, you have to take that into account. You can have the split shot off the bottom, but the bait is at the bottom.

Thank you for the information! Do you think it would be possible and/or smart to modify the slip float rig to use a knocker rig under the float as opposed to the Carolina rig? I'm wondering because that way, with the weight against the hook, the bobber would go slack if the fish fed "upwards", whereas with the Carolina rig they would have to swim 6-8" upward in order for it to visibly change the presentation of the bobber. Just a question--I was going to try it but figured maybe you already had and knew whether it worked or not! Thanks again for the video!
You know what I've never tried a knocker rig. I had thought of it but my concern was the bobber getting stuck on the leader to main line knot. I do think if that wasn't the case or if you used a shorter leader it could work very well. It makes a lot of sense I may have to just give it a shot one of these days! But if you beat me to it let me know how it goes!

Always thought they were called convict fish cause they have light and dark bars on them like the white and black stripes of old prison clothes.

You're welcome! Definitely fall into early winter if you're fishing inshore down in the SC area. If you're fishing much further north I think it's later Spring or early summer. But you can catch them year round down here you just have to weed through the bait stealers.
You really helped so much. Couple questions. Do you use a barrel swivel between the leader and weight for the Carolina rig? Are these fish only present at the bridges etc in the winter? Definitely got a sub.
Thanks Jim! Yes I do use a swivel to attach the leader on my Carolina Rig. And they're still inshore in the winter, but tend to be found in a bit deeper water since the water is warmer than the air. Most bridges are in deeper water so they definitely flock to bridges more in the winter but they're still on the docks too!

Thanks Calvin! Hook size is definitely important in my opinion. If you have a really small hook relative to the bait you're using they may not get hooked OR could swallow it. Alternatively, if you use a big hook relative to the bait it could be so big they don't bite or just eat around the hook. Size 1 seems to be the happy middle ground for me.
My cousin scrapes barnacles then uses crickets. He swears by it.👍
Great info! Do you prefer letting the bait sit on the bottom or would it also be OK to have the bait suspending in the water, maybe a foot or two from the bottom, or even higher up near the surface?
Thanks Andy! I personally let it sit on the bottom almost all of the time. It keeps the bait from moving too much which makes it look more natural and helps you get more bites. The sheep can be feeding at any place in the water column though, but I find I have my besr results by focusing on the bottom.

When it comes to sheepshead jig, do you tip the hook with oysters, or something else, or leave it bare? Thanks you for sharing all this knowledge. We have a larger area in the bay that has thousands of pilling with metal plates on them, that were set during WWII to fool potential enemy (airforces) into thinking that our air field/based were located there instead of there actual location 30 miles away. They are mostly in shallow, 2-4 ft, water. The current isnt particularly strong there and the tidal flow is usually < +- 1.5ft. Do you think that this area would be productive.
Hi Bobby, yes I tip the jigs with crabs primarily either fiddlers or mud crabs and occasionally blue crabs. I have used oysters as well with some decent success. The spot you're talking about sounds enticing in the warmer weather. Since it's shallow and a huge area I would recommend searching for the pilings that are a foot or two deeper than the rest and prioritizing your time there. Those deeper pockets are much more likely to hold fish, but the minimal tide swing is also a factor. If you notice any that have a strong current break try those as well. Could be a hotspot but only giving it a go will tell you for sure! Goodluck and thanks for watching

the term "Convict" comes from their stripes...the same pattern for old convict uniforms from the early 30's-50's....

Scraping a pylon kills the pylon. Once all that growth is scraped off those sheepshead don’t have anything left to eat on. So yes for the day it’ll catch you more. But overall it’ll kill the spot. Just something to think about.

You're correct, I've heard it both ways but I meant to include that as well and just forgot.
They are called convicts is there pattern matches old prison stripe uniforms , not what they eat. All fish steal bait😂
