20lb leader Florida or mono is my go to all the time no matter the structure.. in my opinion and experience it's a great all around lb test.. light enough for the finicky fish and strong enough for the monster double digit fish
I have one 7 foot rod rated 20 lbs. I have 3000 reel with 20 lb braid. I use cheap Walmart 30 lb mono with the cheap bronze mustad 3/0 hooks. Small spit shot. Big Mud crabs cut ✂️ in half. The juice draws in the fish. Scent draws in the drums as well Tarpon springs area sheep's have been 15 to 22. Lot of nice puppy drums 18 to 21. Perfect eating size. I been using mustad hooks 2/0 for shrimp. ( winter snook) 33 years. Same hooks mad snooker uses. The reason I use 3/0 for sheep's is they have alot of teeth and the 3/0 especially on the bigger sheep's sinks into their mouth better.
I honestly will stick with a 3000 61/2 -7 ft with 20lb braid and a 15-20lb leader for Sheepshead. However if you only have one pole as JC said 15 lb straight mono will always work!!!
I use 6lb flouro leader on braid while fishing sheep’s and out fish people on my boat. You do not need heavy duty leaders on a fish that weighs 2lbs or less.
Lol u must b catch 12 n 14 inchers off a oyster bar. Sheepshead can get up to 35 inches and can weight up 10 to 15 lbs. Plus with all the structure and pile lines the hang around you get broke off with a 6lbs leader. My pd was a 26incher he weight 8.5 lbs
Water clarity usually isn’t a factor for me when it comes to leader test. There’s some research that shows that fish can sense fishing line in the water using their lateral line, and in murkier conditions, that sense will be heightened, since eyesight is something the fish cant rely on as much. I hate that I don’t have a source for said study, but I do recall reading it not too long ago
Need to add the size of sheepshead in your area. Usually hook into a few 14-15 pounds each year so I never try to go under 20 braid or 30 lb mono leader.
Get yourself the cheapest can of cat food you can find.... don't be afraid to go to Dollar Tree. Jab a couple of holes in it with a screwdriver and drop it in the water of course attached to a string. It will attract shrimp and Sheepshead like crazy. When you're done fishing pulled up by the string and throw it in the trash

Another super great video JC thanks I'm ready to catch some sheep heads tight lines my friend
I have a dedicated 7’ setup with 20lb Berkeley big game. Great video JC 🔥!
You need to have an arsenal of options for those guys, for sure! Once you master a certain way, it can be your go-to ND most successful! Tight lines!
I got a 20" incher yesterday using straight 30 lb mono with a shrimp on a jighead.
That's a monster Sheepshead. Thanks for watching.

Been using 20 lb Vanish, works great for shy fish.
Awesome, thanks for the tip.

My Zebco 733 has fresh 20 test mono on it every year. 14 or 15 pound mono on the spinning reels I use for sheep. Knocker rigs rule!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yep, I'm a knocker rig guy when it comes to fishing for Sheepshead too in most places.
Great info jc

How do u even know if there biting or have the bait in there mouth man do they run with the bait or some ? Do circle hooks work with them ?
Usually I wait until I feel the weight of the fish pull before setting the hook. I don't fish with circle hooks for sheepshead.
What color braid is good to use for sheep’s?
I always use a mono leader with braid. I like yellow braid, very easy to see.
First. Nice vids JC
10/15lb mono leader usually, flouro is a sham
I bought some 10lb fluorocarbon leader that claims to be invisible in the water
Sounds like a winner for sure!
