Thank you for your time. My wife and I are bringing another couple down on the Monday the 12th. We hope they are hungry. Probably won’t get there until about midday. Plan on fishing Tuesday and returning home on Wednesday. Information like this really helps the ones of us that travel to be able to fish a day or two. I have a good tip for these fish. Don't skimp on hooks. Don't use cheap hooks, brand comes down to preference but get the strongest ones you can find. A big sheepshead can bite right through a cheap hook.
Sheepshead also congregate on offshore natural and artificial reefs especially during their spawning period. Here in North Florida they congregate most January-April.
They have been spotted at the mouth of the Chesapeake bay in early May doing the mating thing. They are out there paired up in huge numbers... They will not bite anything though

great video (both of them). tips: to calm any fish, cover its eyes....they wont shake as much. hold the sheapshead like a six pack (on their eyes). their spikes wont be a problem.
Good content! My favorite fish to target. Down here in FL, it's not too common to see 20+ inch sheepers inshore. Average around 16-17 so i use the 1/0.
I catch 20+ inch sheepers often but you gotta fish at or near an inlet or nearshore reefs or wrecks on moving tide during Jan-April. Let the 20+ inch fish go so they can re-populate. Keep a few smaller ones for the table. Enjoy.

Great 2 part video. If there is anything to take away from this is to release older larger fish. I think the bay fishery has declined in some aspects with average sizes being one of them. If seasoned anglers who probably make up a large portion of the recreational fishery lived by an unwritten code of conduct (one ex: slot sizes for all species designed specifically to target the smaller but theoretically more abundant size classes) and instill that in every new angler they fish with. Also with the explosion of youtube resulting in more people fishing with increased success it would only make sense to use the same platform for fisheries conservation.
I agree completely. I was a bit of the typical catch and keep all for that "Instagram" picture or the "UA-cam Thumbnail" in the beginning of all this. But the more I have learned the more I have become a firm believer in conservation. Now days I only keep what I can eat while it is still fresh and let the rest go and at the same time make sure I treat them respectfully during the catch process so they live. But I have to be honest, I am not too worried about Sheepshead's survival, because they are some tough sob's to learn how to catch and most folks will give up pretty quickly lol!

@@SouthernReelsFishing for me growing up in the bay (I'm 27) I did alot of bottom fishing with my parents but their mentality has always been if we spent money and effort to catch it (and its legal) then it's going in the cooler. The sizes of croaker without question have gone down. Flounder seems the same as well. So now that I am more knowledgeable I try to teach them if we are struggling to catch fish then the fish are struggling to live (alot of fishing pressure). Lastly with covid there has been alot of boaters and kayakers hammering inshore fish. If it keeps up then offshore is gonna be the last frontier for fishing. Thanks for responding and keep up the good work.

So typically with like snapper or something I wait for a "tug" rather than a "bite" because when they are biting like that they haven't swallowed it yet and I end up just pulling it out of their mouth. Is it different with sheepshead? Do you need to set the hook right away if you feel a small bite or a nibble? Or should you wait until you feel a more solid pull on the line?

Yeah the bridge and pilings seem to either mess with the motors compass or block gps satellites. Maybe a combination of both.

That bridge is so big you can't possibly ruin it by saying where I am. I was at the South end of the CBBT.

I swing immediately, you usually only get one shot before the hook is clean
