  • The final verse is from a lovely poem written by John Mitchum as a eulogy to Ben Johnson. My thanks to Paula V. for bringing it to my attention.
And thank you again, Paula, for your friendly encouragement, many pictures, invaluable information, and some much needed video.
Special thanks to Wendy (IrenaDubrovna1000), who not only gave me the initial idea for this video, but provided pictures, helpful suggestions, and enthusiastic support:-)
My sincere thanks to Ben's "Old Cuz", Mr. Doug O'Neal, for giving his permission to use photos from his personal webpage.
Also, a huge thanks to all the channel owners (especially you, Carrie!) who provided material I wouldn't have been able to complete this video without.
Lastly, a thank you to the talented artists whose songs provide the track(s) for this tribute. The clips are taken from songs by Clyde Lucas, Kelly Kenning, Michael James Martin, and Chris Coady. Please check out the websites below, and buy their music if you enjoy what you hear!

Love this tribute, and the man....I went to school with his nieces and nephews, and we called him "Uncle Ben"...one of the nicest Cowboys ever...it was a true pleasure to spend a little time with him.

What a great memory to have to have actually spent time with the man! I always loved the man, no matter which movie or who the leading man was, Ben always lead in his own right just by being the kind of man he was!
I imagine he was much in real life as he was on the screen. I saw a video where he said something like "I didnt know much about playing an actor but I can play the hell out of Ben Johnson!"
He is the kind of man I think all men aspire to be!
Watching this tribute has me wanting to make a list and watch every movie he was ever in. As much as I love John Wayne, Ben Johnson stands right there beside him!

Growing up watching men like this in the 70s and early 80s with my dad who passed away at 91 but they all taught me great values and how to treat other people. With great moral attributes such men as John Wayne and of course Ben Johnson or maybe even Alan Ladd all the great Cowboys who stood up for what was right and lived a decent hard-working life , may they rest in peace and again thank you Dad( Russell )..for being my hero.

One and Only Cowboy indeed! He did all those masterpieces with John Ford, and a few other directors, and no Oscar for his real performances, he had to play Cybil Shepherd's father in some drama, to win his Oscar. They should have given him and Dobie both Honorary Oscars for their work. They were unsung men. So many others in those John Ford epics!

Ben was not only authentic, he was a true athlete. Nothing prettier to watch than a man who rides a horse as if they were one. His honesty shone through his eyes. Never will be another like him.I recall in an interview Ben was speaking of John Ford. "He always had someone chasin'me - whether it was Indians or the bad guys". Ford just loved to watch Ben ride. Don'twe all! Are you listening, Ben?

What a lovely tribute! I have had horses almost all my life and I've looked up to "Uncle Ben" like others did to The Duke. What I wouldn't have given to hit the trail for a week or so with my hero! What fun that would have been!

I met Ben Johnson in the early 1990's when he was living in Mesa, Arizona and pretty much in retirement. I was working in local radio and Ben stopped by the station to plug his "Charity Rodeo for kids" where he brought in all of his actor friends from Hollywood. I was lucky enough to be his emcee at a party after a performance. He was one of the most honest down to earth people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with. He was the REAL DEAL. I miss ole Ben.

No one has ever looked better on a horse than Ben Johnson. John Ford found that out when he saw him double John Agar in "Fort Apache." He turned to Duke and asked, "Who's that kid doubling Johnny?" Duke said, "His name's Ben Johnson, he's married to Fat Jones' daughter."
This is a quote from Harry Carey, Jr.'s book, COMPANY OF HEROES; My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company.

"We were making "The Train Robbers"in 1972. That's when they called me from Hollywood and said I better get back there because I might win an Academy Award. Well I was a cowboy and no cowboy had ever won an Academy Award, so I knew I couldn't. Well, anyhow, Duke lent Ann-Margret and me his new airplane to go to the awards. We come up there and I win that old Oscar. That's the big thing in my life. I'm the only cowboy who ever won a World Championship in the rodeo and won an Oscar in the movies

I'm not ashamed to say that I sat here with tears rolling down my cheeks when I watched your video. I had to get up from my computer and blow my nose before I could e-mail my previous e-mail!!!! There's TOO MUCH to say about that WONDERFUL MAN in two short postings!!!
Duke tried not to "change" but when one gets to be a super-star, one's world is limited by one's super-stardom, thankfully Ben never became that famous! Duke and he were friends until Duke died, and Duke treasured his friendship!

From Texas and Okla .you were raised on the same Indiane Reservation as my mom and grandma. they always told of Been Son who made it really famous doing what came second nature to him. I was a punk kid working at Jack Ross Motors, I was driving his car back to him after some work being done on it. Fiddling with the radio I hopped the curb on Main Street, all I can say is I was honest with him and felt worse after I found out WHO he was. He was a good good man to me, I will never forget him or what he did for me, and I try to pass it along to young folks who make honest mistakes, as long as the fess up. I also try to be the big brother to those without a father

I didn't have enough room for the rest of the quote. The rest of the quote is:
"I don't know if it means anything or not, but I like to hear myself tell it anyway."
It's "endearing" to me that he didn't have any "false modesty" and ALWAYS KNEW what he was worth, and had dignity! "The mighty John Ford" couldn't intimidate him! Ford was the one who "came around" not Ben, after Ford harassed him on the set of Rio Grande, but after MANY YEARS Ford asked him to return, after that Ben was GREAT!!!!

This is a great compilation of Johnson moments; thanks for posting.......excellent editing too. One addition you could make.....there's good shots of Johnson on horseback in Cheyanne Autumn.
This is a warm tribute to the real Westerner of films who exemplified integrity, bravery, honesty and that elusive quality, conviction.
John Wayne punched them in the mouth, but Ben Johnson picked them up, brushed them down, and sent them on their way with a drawled," Take it easy boy"!
