"I'm not much of an actor but I'm good at playing Ben Johnson." Perhaps, but Ben Johnson is one heckuva man. The most unpretentious actor ever to walk across the screen. Great villain voice and nobody rode a horse better. His tearing across the Texas plain is every bit as important to film history as Brando's emoting. What kid would not want to be Ben Johnson on a horse, what man would not want to be the strong silent personage that Ben was as a man.
Ben Johnson is one of my favorite actors, ever. He had an authenticity about him that was both natural and from his experiences -- something few other actors have. And his stunt riding was amazing. Gone too soon, too young, Son. -- Old Matt
So many iconic actors in this video, many whom are no longer with us. ( Perhaps all of them. ) Nice and valid comments and observations from everyone. Ben was a great presence. R.I. P. to Ben and friends.
Ben Johnson. He'll probably always remain my idea of the true cowboy. And, despite what he says in this brief video of him, I think he was a truly good actor, too. An extremely gifted man at what he did both on film and as a true cowboy, but also a man with an almost non-existent ego. My thoughts about Ben are that he and Harry Carey, Jr. are two of my favorite actors of all time. Thanks for this all-too brief video on Ben Johnson!
Its not hard playing yourself dumbass. That's what he was talking about. If you learn the lines the rest comes easy as fuck. He wasn't a character actor. He couldn't do anything but himself. Just like Clint Eastwood.
Son's Dad and my Granddad, Frank White, worked together as itinerant ranch hands and Son and my Dad grew up together. He was like an extra uncle to me. Every chance I could get I would visit Ben and his wife at their ranch. Richard Jenson wrote a biography of Ben called "The Nicest Fella" some years ago - and Ben was.
When you study his upbringing, you come to understand how his character was formed. Dad was the foreman on what was probably the largest ranch in Ok. Treated the hands well and treated his son like he was a hand. Mother had died. However, his father chose fine in a stepmother. Get into the movie business delivering horses to Howard Hughes. Married the daughter of the guy who had a ranch in the San Fernando Valley and provided horses and wranglers to the movie industry. Never treated like a rich kid or did drug parties in Hollywood.
This is when Men were Men. Ben was a second. To John Wayne.. I have had the utmost respect for these guys as much as I did for my Own father.. God please ❤ then as much as we did..
There's not many of us men who are Western lovers who would not admit that we loved Ben Johnson. If I come back to this life...'I wanna be like BenJohnson!' In the 40'a/50's we used to run around pretending to be Son...not too difficult actually to feel you were really on a horse, with imaginary reins and all! When Son got on a horse they became as one...period. If you can, watch Son at full gallop, say 'Cheyenne Autumn' and you'll see what I mean. The unforgettable Ben Johnson.
Ben Johnson is my favorite actor love this guy wouldn't he being a great president of United States if he wouldn't even have done it he's my hero in my role model love you brother rest in peace you earned it

@@ebogar42 Your lack of an adequate education is obvious in the language of your reply.
@@andymckane7271 I have a science degree dipshit. Nice try. I also know I'm smarter than most people, so I'm far from uneducated.
Such a talent, so real, and honest, he was truly a gift to the world of movies.

You got what you expected out of a cowboy. A real man.
Where have my heroes gone?
The documentary can be viewed at the Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma... Hope it will be available on DVD soon.
A true legend.
Saying he had resonance is so accurate.

You were around to know he didn't do drugs? Not even drank? What the fuck ever.
R.I.P Ben Johnson and Harry Carey jr
Yes
He was a real man. Forget John Wayne, Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck and all them. Ben, James Garner and Clint Walker were real men
Another, real cowboy, that is often overlooked was Dale Robertson.

Only, "Ben Johnson" could play "Ben Johnson"!
Ben Johnson......the Real Deal.
Ben Johnson was authentic.

Guy was word champion bronc rider
Actually, he was a world champion calf roper.
Does anyone know where a copy of the full version of the documentary can be found?
I'm looking also
@@stevemiller1203 me too. I’ve been looking for years.
Me too wish i could find it.
If Ben is "OK" with Dean Stanton than he's "OK" with me. Who am I? Your average red blooded boy from Mesa, Arizona raised on a Appaloosa Ranch.
Ben Johnson, the best there EVER was!
