  • At the 2007 Lone Pine Film Festival Harry Carey, Jr told the folks a funny story about his pal, Ben Johnson. Ben was stunt doubling for Johnny Weissmuller in Tazan's Desert Mystery (1943). It seems that drinking with Johnny could have dire consequences!

Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. were two of my favourites when I was just a kid watching westerns in my local cinema. Alongside Randolph Scott and Joel Mc Crea.
They all set me such great examples of how to live and behave. I will never forget them. Heroes, every one.

Harry Carey, Jr. passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2012. I will miss him and Ben Johnson very much. They were the last of the John Ford - John Wayne cowboys and pony soldiers.

HC Jnr.....never a screen mainliner but by Golly, when directors needed him, he was there. He must have made many films, never having many lines but gracing the screen nonetheless. RIP Harry; thank you for making a western a Western.

I remember that Tarzan movie. It all seemed so realistic to me back when I was six years old. Never occurred to me that Tarzan would need a stunt double, I thought he was a real guy.

Ben Johnson has always been my favorite character actor followed closely by Pat Hingle and Woody Stroud. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Thank you for sharing Ross.

Harry Carey Jr and Ben Johnson - two movie stars who you never hear a bad word about and they may never have topped the cast list but John Ford kept using them so they must have been good!
My only question on that wonderful Tarzan clip is who was stunt doubling for Cheetah?

That group of actors, Harry Carey Jr., Ben Johnson, Ken Curtis (who also sang with the Sons of the Pioneers), Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Ward Bond, Grant Withers and of course John Wayne (and others whom I can't recall offhand) were arguably the very best at what they did, which was the craft of the American western movie. Maybe their films were not always historically perfect. The genre itself (the American western movie) includes literally hundreds and hundreds of films, some of which are technically and artistically awful. Even this group did not always make the best film when they were working. But, the overall quality of their volume of work of American westerns (which, in itself, is quite large) is arguably unmatched.

    Hello Andrew
Thanks for using this space to reflect on Harry and Ben.
If you haven't read Harry book COMPANY OF HEROES you should. Great personal insights on working with Ford, Wayne, etc. Also The Guardian obituary on Harry, which is available online, is worth checking. (Unfortunately comments can't contain links)
Not sure who did the stunt doubling for Cheetah but I am pretty sure it was not Yakima Canutt!

The Wagon Master with both of them, and Ward Bond, and of course Sam the Lion,in Last American Picture Show, they do not make them like these boys and that is for sure, real cowboys and real men Ben Johnson for sure, loved them both, all young men should aspire to,but so rarely do as enough of this kind of manhood is not displayed these days,an that is a sin,any how loved your video cheers Jim from Scotland.

If someone HAD to double for Weissmuller, I'm glad it was Johnson, another of my idols. Hysterically funny account and yet sad that Weissmuller turned to drink. Such wonderful MEN. We'll never see their like again, I'm afraid. When Carey died, I cried.

Dobe Carey didn't speak as well of Duke Wayne as I would have spoken about someone who paid for my wedding reception, and did what Duke did for him. In Herb Fagan's book, "Duke, We're Glad We Knew You" that was published in 1996, Ben Johnson talks about Duke in an interview before he died.saying, "Duke was the Rock of Gibralter for me...."

This did not need music in the background...We want to hear Harry, not some free domain music....

    • @TexasRoss
      @TexasRoss  6 років тому +1

I used music from an appropriate movie. No music was used to distract from what Harry said. In fact I went the extra yards to overcome the substantial sound problems by adding sub-titles. I have since realised that there are many viewers with hearing difficulties who welcome the addition of sub-titles. I feel that I should use sub-titles more often. I agree that there are sound problems with the video but it was my intention to honour Harry Carey Jr not drown him out. Perhaps you watched a version of the video which had been altered in some way. Thanks for watching.

Ross Schnioffsky, Im sorry if I sounded harsh... Yes, upon a second listen it was film score, and not inappropriate for the content. I apologize, but Im in the audio biz, have made Grammy award winning albums, and owned an audio post production studio, that did voice overs and mixed tv spots, etc. Im picky and wasn’t fair. Love the content, love all the great info, would love to see more.. and if you need a good mixer, well..

It is good to chat with you William, and yes, I do need all the help I can get. I do not work in the film or audio industry and make these little videos mainly because I love classic Hollywood and believe that film history should be shared and preserved. I filmed Harry as he spoke at the Lone Pine Film Festival 10 years ago in a high school hall and unfortunately I was way back in the audience. The PA system was not conducive to capturing good audio nor was my fairly low level camcorder. Thank you for your kind, positive words about the content, etc. It is always to a joy to make contact with someone who appreciates Harry Carey Jr's (and Ben Johnson's contribution to American film history. Best thoughts, Ross.
PS. Tell me - who doesn't need a good mixer!
