Doing stupid stuff in video games since 1918.
Can I Beat Dragon Age: Origins... All By Myself?
This is what happens when I don't cut things for time. I hope you're happy... because I sure am.
From the creator who brought you "Can You Beat KotoR 2 without Leveling Up?" and it's fantastic sequel "Can You Beat KotOR without Leveling Up?", comes an entirely original full length feature. With never before seen behind the scenes footage, extras, and non-optional director commentary, Vhoul Studios UA-cam Channel Ltd. (not a company) is proud to present: "Can I Beat Dragon Age: Origins... All By Myself?".
We'll be diving deep into Dragon Age lore and asking the hard-hitting questions. Like, 'can you beat Dragon Age: Origins all by yourself?', 'can you beat Dragon Age: Origins without leveling up?', and much mo-- Oh wait, no that's it.
Oh, and please don't expect a montage in every video from now on. I'm running out of UA-cam licensed songs that have any hope of being montage material.

Age of Mythology's 5 WRs, that nobody wanted

The following video is the culmination of over 2 months of my life. I probably could have done it faster, but I am certain I could not have done it any better. If you would like any more information regarding this speedrun, don't hesitate to ask; I wasn't able to fit it all in. Off the top of my head, I had to cut the following topics: How to map the editor glitch How to save time on autoscroll...
Can you beat KotOR without leveling up?

Have you ever been playing one of your childhood games, and you hear that classic level up sound, just like you remembered it as a kid? Well I did; actually it happened about a thousand times over the last few months... because in Knights of the Old Republic, THAT SOUND plays.. every. single. time you load into the game. and it doesn't stop until you level up. But I couldn't level up.. because ...
Worst Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Yes, the answer to your question is yes. I stole the name for this series from Josh Strife Hayes' Worst MMO Ever series. I think you'll find it quite different. This video is a criticism of games that refer to themselves as 'Game of the Year' in their marketing, or at all. In reality, there are 100s of Game of the Year awards, and winning any amount of them does not make a game any better. Plea...

its funny, even 15 years ago, I always went into the bracilian forest first. Always saved the Fade bs for last.
Amen.
Ngl you kinda look like Enki from fear and hunger
NGL its funny having been told to play the game, I play the game, come back and he's still telling me to go play the game. It is a good game though, and not one I would've been able to do by myself.
The effort and editing quality of the video is through the roof. You need more subscribers
"So, you're the Hidden Beks, yes?" Gadon: "Yes. No, we're not very well hidden, and nobody here is called Bek."
If the game leveling a player up counts, couldn't the jedi academy counted then
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. If my actions lead to me or my party members leveling up, it's against the rules. If I go through the jedi training and the game levels me up, it's against the rules. There is no functional difference between pressing the level up button, or choosing to go through the jedi training--they are both choices by me. This should not be confused with how the game leveled Bastila up, as I had no say in this matter. Before you start the game each character was presumably living their lives and leveling up to their heart's content. Then when the game starts, they each have their respective levels that they start at (which is not 1). So when Bastila leaves the party and levels up on her own, it doesn't count. Not sure if this is what you were referring to, but it's the best I can do.
@vhoul ya but it seemed like you chose to use her as an ally. Even though you didn't level her up she isn't level 1. Just like how the academy isn't your choice in leveling you found another way because it technically wasn't level 1. Just seemed a little confusing why you chose to skip 1 but not the other. Is she a character you have to use?
@@ChiefChampAlot The challenge is no leveling up, not level 1 only. There were never any restrictions on using characters who have leveled up, only on leveling those characters up. If I had any possible influence on whether or not Bastila leveled up, I would have considered that against the rules since my actions would have led to a level up, but I didn't. As it is, I see her leveling herself up as no different from recruiting HK-47; as I don't have to recruit them, and neither of them are level 1. As for the jedi academy, it wasn't about not technically being level 1. It was about the jedi academy technically being a level up (as you go from level 0 to level 1). If it was a level 1 challenge, I would (probably) not have skipped the jedi training, and played the entire game solo. Hope this clears up any confusion.
@vhoul gotcha fair enough bud I was thinking about it as a level 1 only cause you can't level up. Great video man, really enjoyed both the 1st kotor and 2nd kotor runs
I think everyone can agree that this is probably one of the runs that *shouldn't* ever show up on the main stage of a GDQ. Still fascinating, though, and the presentation was magnificent.
Lmao, I agree. If there were a single message to be taken away from this video, it is embodied by this comment.
I enjoy how much detail you put into everything. Its almost like watching a speedrun tutorial at times.
Loved this video! Origins is nostalgic for me so I always love seeing other people play it!
Mage is the way to go I think. Had lake 90% of party damage dealt by my main character. You can solo encounters and most bosses with ease
That's what I thought, and that's why I didn't. :)
This is the reason the internet exists. Not TikTok or any political bullshit. It’s should be just this extremely obscure and analytical geekery.
:)
Just started but yea, wow that intro speech felt way more poignant after playing Veilguard, this aged like fine wine :D (not that its old) Anyway, onto the challenge, been consuming a lot of BG3 challenges lately, they are great fun, its awesome to see that there is something similar for DA. Lol I vibe so much with the Morrigan take... There hasnt been anyone like Morrigan since, I love Liara and closest we got was Shadowheart, but Morrigan is the best girl, her VA also absolutely kills it. I love how you roleplay to justify yourself killing Wynne and the mages, I was that evil only once and it still hurts me to this day :D Wynne is such a nice grandma, who could be mean to her :(
✋🤚I don't know what you're talking about Officer, that Demon attacked me. ;)
U probably said himself because women aren't great at war. But if u think you're a misogynist who am I to argue?
34:14 you can also just hide behind the table behind where atton spawns and the melee only twin suns wont be able to get to you
The leviathan, Saul karath's ship...
Yes, thank you Carth...
Morrigan changed me as an 11 year old boy
I did some heinous shit in this game, but telling morrigan to fuck off and go is truly something evil
what flavor of autism is this?
All the cut aways to the crew and others voice clips was hilarious 😂
bercilian forest is the only correct first location option
So far my character on origins is a arcane warrior blood mage and I am having so much fun
i have watched this 3 times now idk why its just easy to watch. good video
Wow, that's a lot of times.
This must have been the most unique and cozy video about DAO that I've watched. Keep it up man, can't wait to see more of your content!
Hello! I play a lot of Dragon Age and have an unhealthy amount of knowledge with the game because of my own mid-maxxing and me also doing similar challenges! I recently did a run where my character hated magic and would refuse to use it in the party while also being a templar built to counter all mages. I played on the nightmare difficulty and had to come up with some interesting strategies to get past some of the earlier parts of the game. It's impressive you did what you did solo! A little I have learned. Having a high cunning with Lethality passive makes of of the strongest Rogues because it gives you all the benefits of Strength while you have Cunning as your highest attribute, and cunning makes you and your party stronger. Dexterity increases your chances to hit and avoid attacks so it's my recommended second highest, around 32-36 is a good area. Though it is safe to interchangeably use Dex as your main instead of cunning if you plan on going the assassin route. I would never recommend Ranger unless you are doing it for RP purposes. I also would almost always recommend Rogue over Warrior because better abilities and you get more skill points (1:2 instead 1:3 for levels) and because of the backstab/critical damage bonuses. In the most up to date version of the game, Strength is mostly useless to rogues unless you plan on using swords and axes which I would not recommend as a rogue. Though auto attack Dual Wield Warriors with swords and/or axes are surprising powerful and don't require a lot of thinking. You need at least a little bit of Strength to get the strongest armor in the game for the rogue, which is the Battledress from Leliana's story. So at least 18. 18 is fine because you'll have the Fade and armor which boosts your stats 22, like the Helmet of Honnleath and the Key to the City probably to buff your stats without having to allocate anymore score. You won't need too much mana since rogue doesn't utilize a whole lot of abilities (and if you're a bard you will have either Courage or Valor buff for regen and damage), and Constitution is also not too necessary as well because of your high dex stat helps you avoid many attacks. However, playing solo, it doesn't hurt to add a few additional points into it to survive the earlier stages of the game easier though, but you'll have plenty of chance to buy poultices or craft them. Rock Armor is one of the best resistance balms in the game but you won't get the crafting for it until the Alienage so use sparingly, and the Crow poison in my opinion is the best poison, giving you 6 extra damage per hit. I can't remember when you get it, but I believe it's during the Crow's storyline. Also, DA:OU has a notorious memory link that causes the game to crash often. The game is ran on a 2gig ram launcher and you need to find an update online to allocate 4gig, which stabilizes the game greatly! It won't be a part of the actual game and will require online research to find. Lastly, it is possible to get max level (level 25) in the game without cheating which a whole lot of people don't know about. Donating supplies to your army grants you experience based on the quantity of your donations. You can go positive financially by making potions (Potent Lyrium and Poultices) and selling them for coin. There is at least one vendor who will sell infinite of what you need to craft. Thank you for the video! it was a lot of fun to watch, and I subbed! Please keep giving us more. Maybe DA2, Awakening, or Inquisition next?
These are all great points that I didn't end up finding time to talk about. I had actually considered doing this same challenge without any glitches. I believe it's doable, but ultimately I felt that the strategies involved, although more difficult, would have been much less entertaining. Basically you do all the same stuff, but you aren't able to duplicate traps and you are mostly limited to acid grenades. This would have meant a more difficult early game where I have to work my way towards master herbalism in order to make money (as you mentioned), and use that money to buy infinite lifestones from Ruck for acid flask crafting. And as for traps, it turns out you can do all the same out-of-bounds tricks without an infinite supply. You just have to leap frog them one at a time. Theoretically you can go anywhere with just 2 bear traps. I suppose Ser Cauthrien might have been trickier, since I would either have to spend my limited traps, or find some other method. I don't actually know how many trap triggers you can get in the game, but I didn't want to find out.
@vhoul oh shii, whaddup Fred. The life rock trick is actually pretty smart actually. I forget you can use crafting mats for small effects like that. I don't know about you but I feel like I'm cheating whenever I use any dlc or cheat items, so on nightmare I avoided them, though destroying them at the start always hurts the soul. The House Dace amulet is super op, broken even. You're actually the first person I saw who used the traps effectively. I usually avoid that skill altogether aside from completing that one quest in Lothering lmao.
@@mattpresley9809 You can only cheat the rules you set out for yourself.
Fred looks a lot like Sandal's long lost cousin.
My favorite scene in Star Wars is the part where Darth Vader boards Leia's ship, immediately steps on some landmines, and dies.
If there's one thing this video accomplished, it's making me feel stupid for never touching the traps in this game in any of my many playthroughs.
They're waiting for you inside.
I tried doing this a couple years ago, was do the dalish quest and the mods I had installed fucked my game. All my saves were fucked. Haven't touched the game since.
Can you beat DAO by only using traps to deal damage?
Mr. Vhoul you have a rutabaga authenticity I have not seen in any youtuber for a day and an age - I wish you a hearty success!
You have a great taste in games! First KotOR 1 & 2, Age of Mythology, now DA:O... really nice to see :D
Did you see the new re-release? Age of Mythology: Retold. It's surprisingly good, probably the best launch of any "definitive edition" and the likes I have seen. Played tons of AoM in my childhood, now AoM:R is amazing to return to.
I did check out some gameplay at one point, and was none too impressed. I have some very particular opinions on the matter of remakes, remasters, etc. which I am currently working to put together in my next project. It's taking a long time though, on account of me being who I am. Hard to go into detail here, as I would take some time to fully express my thoughts, and I would like to address this issue to everyone all at once.
@@vhoul Oh I can probably relate, I am a big fan of old games and do not mind old graphics and UIs and all. But AoM:R really surprised me very positively.
@@MrAbgeBrandt Well my goal is never to rain on anyone's parade, but I've stood in enough parades after being told I didn't need an umbrella, and I always seem to get wet. I'm glad you're liking it.
I love this nerdy shit
You’re such a nerd and so dramatic but I love it
What a good video. Do FFX next
41:44 Aside from the cliff racers and netches in Morrowind, and the bloatflies in Fallout 3, I guess?
Do you use traps in every game possible?
No, it's just a happy accident.
@vhoul :)
So. Who wants to be the one to tell him that "mano" does not mean "man?"
I've been waiting for you... Mano does in fact, not mean man. It means hand. I don't speak Spanish, but my understanding is that 'mano a mano' is a Spanish phrase meaning 'hand to hand'. This phrase has been adopted in English, but it is regularly misinterpreted as 'man to man' on account of it's similarity to the English phrase 'man to man' in both usage and spelling. Now the joke I am making here is precisely this. I'm satirizing the people who make this mistake by playing a caricature of these people. However, 'duchos handos' is just nonsense. Google translates this as 'hand showers', which is obviously not a thing, particularly when the phrase I am translating is 'two hands'. 'Duchos' is not 'two', and 'handos' is not 'hand'. If I wanted to correctly translate 'two hands' into Spanish it would be 'dos manos'. And finally, 'requiescat in pace' is Latin. So that if you didn't get the joke at this point, it should now be painfully obvious. I'm not trying to speak Spanish. I'm making a joke. But I can also understand that Spanish and English, which both regularly use many of these words and phrases, are all based on Latin, so this could be a bit confusing. But you might have realized that, and were just making a joke yourself. In which case I applaud you. But since you brought it up, I figured it was about time to explain this to anyone who didn't already notice. :)
Well that intro was Maker-blessed You have nice acting chops Also watching this after Veilguard Release makes it even better😂😂😂
This video was a breath of nostalgy to me, thanks! Reminds me how i was breaking the game like 10+ years ago in my multiple Nightmare runs, it was peak. Shame this game never got a sequel...
Now that veilguard is out and far, far worse than anyone could have ever even feared, DAO videos are simultaneously a nice reminder of how good the franchise used to be, and feel like someone's twisting the knife in the wound by showing you just how unbelievably low its fallen. I was 14 when I played Origins for the first time, and even back when I was 14, I would have been insulted by how childish the dialogue is in veilguard.
I am getting kind of suck of my inbox being flooded with “YOU CAN’T DO _THIS_ IN VEILGUARD!!!!” Like shut up dude, I don’t wanna hear about that game anymore
I wish I could play Origins for the first time again, truly a masterpiece.
Should be possible. With a mage once you get a few levels you can pretty much solo content easily.
My past Halo 2 no lifeing teenager self appreciates the plasma grenade spam strat.
Fun Fact about those ash wraiths in the temple. They're an obvious fail safe for if you killed or ejected too many party members in order to prevent a soft lock. Now naturally the trigger is such a niche situation darn near nobody has ever seen it, and it appropriately got a relevant amount of testing. Such testing did not concern itself with silly questions like "What if the player just turns around and leaves?" Well, I'll tell you the answer. Absolutely nothing. The ash wraiths stay as party members and get a well earned vacation traveling all over Ferelden.
I briefly considered making the challenge 'Can you beat DAO with Ash Wraiths', but much like the ash wraiths, it was too niche.
dwarf tank can do it np
Oh, how I'm glad to see this game once more... I played it dozens of times, so I can't play it anymore... But challenge run? That sounds intresting. 1:01:20. - How many traps have you duped? - Yes.
