Come chill, hang out, and listen to 3 friends talk all about MENHERA! My friends Puvi (@puvithel) & Addy (@addyharajuku) both combined have many years of experience with the Menhera community and are both extremely passionate about it. We talk about the difference between Menhera and Yami Kawaii, how Menhera as a fashion came to be, whether anyone can wear Menhera fashion, and so much more about this misunderstood subculture and art community. Recently, I and many others have noticed a ton of misinformation being spread about various alternative J-Fashion (short for Japanese Fashion) styles and kawaii culture so I came up with the idea on Twitter one day to start a video series where I sit down and talk to people who have been part of these communities either for more than a decade or who are extremely active in their communities. Through this series, I am hoping to share the knowledge that these J-Fashion veterans have with others about the rich history & culture of this global J-Fashion community as well those wanting to try out these fashions for themselves. Spending time with all these wonderful people has been such a delight and I have learned so much as well! We go over the history, the evolution, advice for newbies, misconceptions, and a ton of other stuff about these various styles. I really hope that this is helpful, informative, and that you have a good time learning with all of us! o((*^▽^*))o

This is very interesting, it seems like menhera is simultaneously a fashion and a community in the way that punk is. Both have an associated aesthetic but in both the community and activist work sphere of things comes first and foremost
I think the word ur looking for is subculture
@@ohgodohgodhelp6152 lmao
most alternative fashions have some sort of values and beliefs attached to them
Honestly as a punk who really likes menhera that is amazing and I so want solidarity between these communities
As someone who’s fairly active in the menhera community, thank you for addressing all the misinformation that has spread about the subculture!
as someone with mental and physical chronic illnesses it warms my heart that theres subcultures built to accomodate disabled people and I really appreciate it and it makes me want to investigate subcultures like that more
menhera known as not just a subculture but also a counterculture is empowering
this was super helpful ! at one point i was thinking of trying out menhera, but i dont think i fully grasped what it was at the time, im glad that now i know more ! also "you were the cringe, but now you accept the cringe" LMAO reminds me of the i am cringe but i am free meme
This is something and please do one one on mori kei
And menhera is an unique style along with yamikawaii
I like the idea of menhera because of how accessible it is....and it looks and sounds comfortable as someone who's partially blind and deaf in the same side (left)
I had no idea what menhera was before this. I didn’t know there was a disability accessible J-fashion. That’s so cool.
this really opened my eyes. i knew about menhera for a while but because of the misconceptions it really rubbed me the wrong way. this video really changed my perspective
I got super into menhera fashion as a way of coping with my mental illness in 2019. Then 2020 happened and all medical motifs became sources of anxiety. 🙃 What wonderful timing.
That presentation kinda changed my life, thanks for speaking so loud Puvi!!
Ahhh I'm glad you liked it! I think if I had known about menhera earlier in my life it could have really saved me some trouble, I hope by telling more people about it that they can benefit from it
I’ve been loving this series, can’t wait!
Thank you!! I'm so happy you've been enjoying it! ^^
I loved this! What Puvi said about having scars was so amazing. I love the idea that I don't have to hide mine nor should I need to explain them to anyone unless I want to. Also Addy at 47:55 on wards about people bullying and being essentially two faced cracked me up. She was so great! I also didn't realize that I had just started following Addy on Instagram and now got to see her in this interview!
Oh and I just absolutely love these series where we get to listen to y'all talk about missconceptions and origins of different styles/subcultures/communities/asthetics etc.
So my visual aesthetic is mixing visual kei with yami kawaii while spreading awareness of mental illness through manhera.
thanks a lot for making this video !
I started to finally express myself through my clothing and style thanks to finding out about menhera, and while I started with a lot of misinformation unfortunately, it helped me to create my own style, and even thought my style has moved away a lot from menhera, I would still like to be part of the menhera community specially bc of the mental health part that it is also somewhat taboo in my own country
I discovered it a year ago but I’m getting back into it now, and it sometimes takes a minute for my brain to be like “yes, no one will judge you for liking this” Love the community and style :)
I'm a survivor of childhood abuse and have PTSD. When I found this fashion and art and menhera chan manga in highschool I felt like it spoke to me so much. I already watched this video and your others on fashion communities but I searched this one specifically while thinking of outfits I wanted to wear like puv said in a way to vent and express myself. Pinterest I think reflects much more of those other styles that cross tag themselves and I am looking for help finding sources to dress in these styles.
I would love a video about the Drama around Menhera-chan and her artist and his art if thats what you want to do.
Drama??? What happened
@@feiyen4263 Ezaki Bisuko gets himself into miscellaneous drama like every other week. It's mostly unrelated to Menhera-Chan though.
@@mariicore6085 💀
@@feiyen4263 he's also said that only people who buy his stuff are true fans, and he supposedly tried to copyright the term "yamikawaii" which made people go away from the menhera style. plus he's not the best person in general :((
@@em-rj1cc funny that you mention this but I found out from the english translation blog that many people in the community even in Japan are denouncing the creator of Menhera-chan and refuse to use the term Yami-Kawaii, instead sticking to Menhera or going with newer terms. I'm sticking with Menhera myself as a result, so I'm glad someone mentioned that here in the comments.
Also to Feiyen I doubt you'll see this but the creator of Menhera-chan also collabed with brands that idolize and encourage self-harm, the brands made merch for him that had fresh self-harm imagery and the styles they're based off of are based on the romanticizing of harming your body for attention and for "sending a message" so that was awful. I remember seeing the merch and getting really triggered, as fresh harm is generally seen as bad in the Menhera tags because we want to encourage quitting self-harm, not continuing it or idolizing it if that makes sense ;-;
I love menhara so much bc most of my childhood memories where when I was in a hospital (for some reason??) so I just naturally think that bandages and being hurt is pretty and it makes me feel beautiful, like when I get my blood drawn I love the little patch of goz and the medical tape bandage stuff it’s so pretty
Edit: got a lil mor into the video and found out that gurukawaii and medikawaii
As someone with sensory issues,(as well as scars), I would love to try Menhera. It's focus on mental health, and inclusivity really speak to me.
Thanks to all 3 of you for making this video! This was really informative and I learned a lot more than I thought I would!
I'm binge watching all your videos ...I'm 30 but always loved Japanese Fashion in general and now I'm brave enough to dip my toes in it!!
OMG I was hoping for this 😭😭😭😭 thank you so much
Hi!! I wanted to let you know, in the chapter titles, it's listed as "yummy kawaii" when it's supposed to be yamikawaii, I wanted to point that out for anyone that wants to get into the style but can't find it because they don't know it's yami not yummy. Also, it's listed as "gurukawaii" instead of "gurokawaii"
I can't wait 'till this starts!! I adore your content♥︎♥︎♥︎ :DD
Really been waiting for the vid on menhera! Some info might come in handy for me as I'm trying to get into menhera and yamikawaii. Thank you guys for this vid ❤️
I really love this look and this was a very good video on explaining the stigma and misinformation. i really love this series, thanks for making this conversation :)
Lool everything that is overly cute in Japanese culture usually is NOT for kids.. Loving the video..
Thanks so much for uploading this video! it was very informative and interesting :)
It's actually for people that have trauma and are expressing how they feel not to "dress as a mental illness"
yup yup just like what puvi and addy mentioned in the video 😊
I love yami kawaii and pretty much dress in it everyday
BEST. VIDEO. EVER. for a beginner like me! I can't thank all three of you enough.
So excited hope you can do a room tour again some day!
Thank you! We’re about to move into a new place soon so I’m thinking of making a video showing how I put everything together 😊💖

Can't Even Wait Till It Starts, Honey!!
the point from 40:15 onwards has been my struggle with menhera because i've never understood why it would be acceptable to post fresh scars online (artwork or photos, etc), in public areas, with no warnings or anything for ppl like me who find that stuff fairly triggering. i've also seen artists that profit off of this graphic imagery, and it feels like it's just...making fun of those of us who have gone through that. i'm open to discussing this because i know i could be misunderstanding. what about those of us who cannot see this imagery without feeling worse? because it's a rather triggering thing? how can you wear something with graphic imagery that you know could really harm someone else?
i also worry that by putting this information so publicly you may hurt other innocent people (this is how i was dragged into it for a long time..had it not been posted online, i would have never picked up the habit). please feel free to counter-point what i'm saying cuz i dont want to rag on anybody or their communities.
from my understanding, photos of fresh scars are not accepted in the menhera tags (even though people misuse the tags to post self harm anyways). i think what they were saying is that it should be normalized for those that self harm to not have to hide their arms and by extension their struggles, not that it's okay to make the focus of your posts/outfits be graphic self injury. as for art, i do think that the area is a bit gray as to what's okay and what's not, esp when it comes to what's okay to wear in public. menhera art is vent art, and menhera artists often feature self harm in their art to keep themselves from harming themselves. it's not meant to make fun of anyone's struggles since many community members also struggle with hurting themselves. when going into menhera spaces, it's essentially informed consent that you're okay with seeing vent art, but it's complicated when coming across it in the wild. vent art featured on shirts is usually kept to not being as graphic so it's okay to wear without triggering anyone. hope this helps!
Adding onto what lola medina said, people will be triggered by different things and different states of injury and althought you can be aware by posting tw, there will always be one person who is hurt by it just as the poster will be hurt by having that denied for them. So, trigger warnings probably are the best device for making sure everyone is okay and leads to the least possible harm. That being said, scars are going to be seen irl, although probably not fresh ones, so I also get why people won't post tags, as for them, it is a part of their life that signifies a call for help. So putting a tw can be seen to them as putting on a layer of cotton for everyone else that they aren't afforded. I just think it is all a little bit greyarea-ed.
My code of conduct on the internet is scroll past or hide the post, as this is the gift we are allowed by being on social media. In real life, we might not be given the same treatment.
photos of fresh self-harm or graphic gore are greatly frowned upon in the community. the menhera tags are just often spammed with such triggering content, unfortunately. it happens in both the western community and the japanese one as well, and it's a huge problem. some people feel like they must post that to "prove" how menhera they are, which is damaging and untrue...
as for vent pieces on clothing that could contain graphic imagery, some menhera artists will use metaphor in their art to get the vent part across without triggering people. an example of this is a quite common motif of someone in a bathtub surrounded by koi fish to represent self-harm. this is a symbol some will resonate with, without depicting something graphic.
not all artists do this, of course, but that's the sort of thing that artists will do to avoid depicting graphic self harm on clothing. the community at large is quite careful, but this unfortunately gets superseded by a few people who are not and end up posting things that trigger others...
thank you everyone! i'm glad that we were able to talk about this, because i was wondering how everybody else felt. what everyone said makes sense to me and i feel more reassured about the community's practices
Wow. I did not know any of that. Such an awesome video 👍
"live laugh love, & you're a bitch as well!" 😂😂 i love y'all, thank you so much for this video!
i like kill la kill because its self arm to claim controle of the body but is hidden, so its not triggering as much as what is in menhera manga
but i think we shouldnt shame people for having done it, doing it or healing from it, as someone who did it and might do it again, and i guess its hard for people to not think its romantizising it, bc to them its uncomfortable to talk about and all...
I love your content and Addy's so I'm going to love this
Love this series
whoa. 4chan and nice in the same sentence. never heard that before
I've known and seen things related to menhera but didn't get into it as I am right now. It is quite something unique and I want to be apart of this community as well!
Edit: I love how accessible it is to everyone as I watched more of the video. I love the ststement its vent art, but also bring awareness to mental health and everyone should know about it.
Completely unrelated, but when you move in the intro it sounded like a bag of skittles. I mean this as a sincere compliment it's a good sound! ❤💛💚💙💜
will you make more videos like this please i find them really interesting
are you planning to do one with visual kei? I really want to get more into it but i can never find good resouces about it :"(
Yes I am 😊
OMG PLZ DO A STYLE SWAP AND DO A YAMI KAWAII LOOK!!
I love Menhera, but I have a lot to learn
Omg no way it’s you! I’ve seen you a lot on TikTok, you’re super dope
Your such a sweet person the bright cute colorful colors totally compliment your adorable kind authentic attitude
had to do a double take seeing this in my feed, it's weird seeing your old art used in a thumbnail!
can you do a video on ryousangata/jiraikei? I think its still a new fashion in the western jfashion community, idk it only started becoming popular overseas late last year >-
@@MenheraTV it's not!! please stop spreading false information I saw a post on tumblr exactly like this!
@@MenheraTV This Japanese jiraikei youtuber inanaa literally refers to herself and the fashion as jiraikei ua-cam.com/video/dTtpeSJ_GLs/v-deo.html
@@MenheraTV it is called jirai kei… plenty of blogs like lafary and jp fashion stores specifically use “地雷系” when describing the fashion. the menhera chan official instagram literally tagged the recent jirai style merch as #jiraikei in their post.
@@MenheraTVI really don't even understand why you felt the need to respond to my message in the first place lol. I just want more recognition for a style that I like. I personally don't see what's wrong with using the term 'jirai kei', but if I offended you I'm sorry.
@@MenheraTV ok i get it pls leave me alone.
I admire you so so much🌈
I can taste the rainbow with my eyes.
Where did you get your fluffy rainbow hat ???? I looooove it
Can you do a video about mori fashion?
The way I handle fashion is the same way I handle my Pre-K students...
Dressed decently?
Is it fairly clean?
You feeling good?
Then seize the day, my little friend~ ✨
I genuinely couldn't care less that you decided to come to school in mismatched slippers, or with five bracelets on each of your wrists, or jeans with a flowy dress, or froggy rain boots. You do you~
I need one of these docus about yami kawaii fashion 😊
I just got a hoodie with menhera chan on it and I didn’t realise before I bought it so I wanna know what it all about
The funny thing with the whole accessibility to body dysmorphia people with baggy T-shirts thing is with my body dysmorphia the worst thing I could possibly do is wear something baggy, coz it makes you look bigger.
thank you so much for the video ! I came here a little late and the discord link isn't working anymore, can someone please send me the right one ?
This so interesting and you're so cute❤❤
YOOOOO ONE HOUR VIDEO ESSAY
Sadly the discord link is dead

Will you ever do a wardrobe tour?
do you mean tour?
I'd love to do another wardrobe tour once we've moved into our new place in a few months! ^^
sucks that menheratic got harrassed off the site
27:28
for later
too bad the guy who capitalized on it is a weirdo
what did he do?
So its meant to be inclusive and not triggering, then why do they talk so much about self harmin magical girls?
You literally dressed like a bowl of fruit loops bruh.
Lol
That's basically the point of decora
Why would you collab with addy she has anime figures that are barely wearing anything that look 14-16
