    Come chill, hang out, and listen to 3 friends talk all about GYARU! My friends Chris (@_lamiann) & Shiena (@ningyosama) both combined have more than 20 years (!!) of experience with gyaru and are both extremely passionate about it. We talk about how gyaru has evolved over time from the 90s to today in 2021, how the gaijin gyaru community is different from the Japanese gyaru community, whether gyaru is an aesthetic, and so much more. Recently, I and many others have noticed a ton of misinformation being spread about various J-Fashion (also known as Japanese Fashion) styles so I came up with the idea on Twitter one day to start a video series where I sit down and talk to people who have been part of these communities either for more than a decade or who are extremely active in their communities. Through this series, I am hoping to share the knowledge that these J-Fashion veterans have with others about the rich history & culture of this global J-Fashion community as well those wanting to try out these fashions for themselves. Spending time with all these wonderful people has been such a delight and I have learned so much as well! We go over the history, the evolution, advice for newbies, misconceptions, and a ton of other stuff about these various styles. I really hope that this is helpful, informative, and that you have a good time learning with all of us! o((*^▽^*))o

    I found so interesting the part about the stereotype of gyarus being mean or bitchy when they actually are just forward and honest. I used to be into lolita a few years ago and I remember conventions having such a toxic enviroment. So many people were being so polite and sweet on the surface and then being super judgy and shit talking everyone behind their backs if they didn't like their outfits so, yeah, definitively the gyaru way is so much healthier and positive. If you have an oppinion on someone, just say it to their faces, but don't prettend you like them just to shit talk when they're not around.

      usually people say others are mean and rude when really they aren't. this happens all the time, ex. my mom said I had an attitude for talking quietly with no prior reason to think such. It's just how some people think unfortunately-

      I wish life was more like this! I'm not rude, but I won't pretend to like someone if I don't. I also am honest, though not brutally. I don't like playing games like huh does this person like me or are they just faking?

    I was gyaru before you guys were born I think... So just to complement with a bit of prehistory, the name gyaru started because of a brand of jeans called Gal that would sell well to college and office girls that went to Julianna's, a Tokyo club from waaaay back in the bubble economy when people partied a lot and companies would pay your partying because they had too much money, think dancing parapara and eurobeat, in the 80s and early 90s drinking whisky on company credit cards. Back then you were underage until 20 and you graduated HS at 18, by 25 you were expected to be married, a housewife and out of the office so you had at most 7 years of freedom.
    The youngest girls that would sneak into these clubs, underage and still in school, would be called kogal (kogyaru) and it would be sort of like calling someone jailbait, as in they are still kokosei so stay away from them because they are too young, they are still kogyaru. This is also when the whole loose socks movement started and it led to schools getting stricter with their use and uniform rules. Girls started to rebel more and more. Some would have a second pair of socks, loose leg warmers to get the look or a second shorter skirt they would wear outside school. As kogyaru graduated school they would just be called gyaru, the name of them as a whole.
    At that point in 1992 the Japanese economy crashed, the club closed in 93 and the partying stopped. With no office job prospects, gyaru became this group in their late teens or early 20s with no office job prospects that in a destroyed economy, with nowhere to go have fun, would take to hanging out and working in and around an almost dead mall from the 70s at the other side of the Yamanote loop called Shibuya109 (yamanote is a train loop around a central part of Tokyo and at that time it was already established as a place for fashion snaps). The area and mall became revitalized with shops aiming to that younger taste and each year aiming for younger fashion. Kogal would change into a second miniskirt uniform when they left school, put on makeup on the train home or the train to Shibuya shocking everyone. Some would say that gyaru didn't shower, others that they were a threat to the nation's youth, a threat on good morals but the truth was everyone was depressed and broke except these girls that were giving no damns about it, they kept partying and not conforming standards. Japan starts to have an obssesion with school girl stuff while simulstaneously hating on them because of their rebellion. Tanning, brown dyed hair and miniskirts became symbols that were slowly getting heavier to try to go against the grain and the yamato nadeshiko standard.
    By the mid 90s gyaru were everywhere and as the decade went by, most were not settling down, not getting married early and keeping their hobbies and lifestyle. You have publications like Egg, Cawaii!, Popteen all publishing gyaru eyemakeup tutorials with some street snaps also showing up on Fruits!. Print club or purikura was also taking it's current form and had morphed into stickers and being able to put decorations and other basic editing. Namie Amuro had already debuted and her fans the Amuras were unmistakenly gyaru, BoA debuted in Japan, other artists that tanned and had brown chapatsu hair were in as well, even Ayumi Hamasaki was tanned back then.
    Many kogyaru had graduated school and now had to just be called gyaru with a lighter tanned look replacing their former fashion. Alba Rosa, nail art, liz lisa, platform shoes, gyaru circles, everything was already in place. This is around when j-phones were invented and text messaging was expensive which led to a whole bunch of gyarugo invented as shorthand and horizontal emojis, even the (OwO) face. Text messaging worked very different back then in Japan, they were actually e-mails, these phones had color screens and an early form of internet or some even had cameras. Meanwhile in other countries Nokia Snake was the new kid on the block lagging behind on dotted green screens. A bit of information could be accessed via forums like magazine scans.
    At this point I managed to get my hands on some of these scans on my crappy dialup internet and managed to finally learn how to put on eyeliner on my tiny eyes to make them look twice their size. Every component of gyaru fashion is already there when some of the ganguro girls go full yamanba and as a reaction Ganjiro or shirogyaru look is invented in the early 2000s or maybe late 1999. I actually don't know the exact date but by Rainbow from 2002 I remember Ayumi Hamasaki had lost most of the tan.
    Even though gyaru was counterculture, yamanba and later manba was seen as bit too much. The only thing that I think stayed on from the yamanba and manba eras was that they would use a lot of fake eyelashes and more exagerated nail art. Online from outside Japan you could only get very limited information on youth j-fashion but the news about rebellious kogyaru did reach the international media. I think this is why most people think that kogal and manba were actually first.
    From the very start I think it's impossible to avoid having a reputation of troublemakers. Of course, the whole issue of many were rejecting normal life, how they were making a living, dressing and some engaging in risky lines of work while still being so young led to them being both sexualized and easy targets. There were even some scandals with runaway girls living homeless in the area of Shibuya in the early and mid 90s or some girls that would date older men to get gifts like Burberry scarves, LV bags and cellphones which back then were a luxury. These things DID happen but of course media would make it into a generalization and make it look like it was everyone. I think this reputation from back then still haunts gyaru in a way and it got later mixed with kyabakura culture making it even worse. The fact is being a single woman or a teen who aims to stay free in a society that viewed marying before 25 as an objective, because you were otherwise old chrismas cake, who was single but who still had relationships, hobbies and friends, would make you a target for being sexualized. So I think that it was innevitable from the start. The rest I think is covered super well in the video but I just wanted to talk about even older stuff.

    I'm young, and live in a poor/unsupportive country, so I'm worried to wear gyaru clothes, and do gyaru makeup cause I'm worried about being bullied yk? I used to know about gyaru and tried it, didn't work out at first, so I stopped, after a while I got back into it and absolutely fell in love with the style, I'm hoping to find more gyaru content, and try to work with what I have :) ❤
    Edit: it's been a year, and I rarely do gyaru anymore, i still do the hair and makeup sometimes, but I fell in love with another style. I recommend everyone who still loves this style to take it slow! Don't try to get the style now, take your time to build your wardrobe and makeup. Love you ❤

      Unfortunately (in Japan at least) Kogal run the risk of being bullied, slut shamed,or over-sexualized. But that’s because Japan doesn’t promote individuality and a lot of Japanese men think of Gal as “trashy” “promiscuous” “gross” and “ugly”. Kogal/Nachatte (if you’re out of school but wish to wear a uniform EVERY DAY) is I’d the say the tamest style of Gyaru. Very very light makeup, loose socks, accessorized uniforms. Look into Gyaru. Gyaru isn’t just droopy eye makeup and provocative clothing. There is over 100 sub-styles. Some bohemian, some over-the-top. But def do research beforehand

      …did…did you actually just toss out a trisha paytas reference …for fashion lol? Lord have mercy. What is happening. Trisha did a completely disgusting xenophobic, racist, vile depiction of Japanese culture and fashion in her ridiculous video where she’s dressed up like a fake gyaru/ganguro just to get views ..that’s what she does. Do troll videos on whatever marginalized group is being discussed at the moment just to get some views..it’s vile (she’s made videos trolling and claiming she’s black because…she has oily eyelids (this is a direct quote not an exaggeration)…lying about being transgendered….saying she was now gay because she hates men so likeeee she’s totally choosing to be a lesbian…lied and faked DID just because it was trending on twitter….made videos about the death of celebrities and trolled about..their…DEATH…just to get views and traffic to her page because Robin Williams was trending when he passed/Cobain’s anniversary of his death was trending…etc etc ) If you’re referring to her…styl….sorry..I just can’t get that out. If you’re referring to how she dressed …what. She does head to toe copies of other peoples’ styles and calls it cosplaying? I’m sorry for this essay I just think before someone tosses out references like this they should educate themselves on the reference itself. Sometimes these mistakes can occur and I don’t hold it against you obviously and i hope this doesn’t come across as rude..but I had to shed light on this in case you were unaware.     Not gonna lie, I start to sympathize more and more with Gyaru and kinda hate the misconception the other fashion communities have about them;
    Being direct isn't bitchy nor rude but in japanese culture it's considered really rude which i find really sad not gonna lie.
    This just enables an culture that looks out for image more than honesty and makes you an easier target to be sniggered about behind someones back.
    Tbh I rather want to be confronted if my skirt is a bit messy or the back of my hair looks off instead of it being ignored and made fun of behind my back.
    Tho there is a fine line between being direct and overly obnoxious about it:
    My mom really cares alot about image and looking and would point out the most ridiculous things to me while I would tell her a story etc. pointing out that the 1 millimeter dirt underneath my one nail is embarrassing or how the lint that came off from my shawl onto my black jacket makes it look do ugly and i shouldn't have bought that jacket in the first place because it's black and makes lint more prominent for the eye to see. That's bitch and rude if you constantly point that out and can't shut up especially if I tell you smth and you kinda prove to me with that kind of behavior that u didn't listen to me in the first place.
    But just helpfully pointing something out for someone who actually cares about it or put alot of effort into their outfit shouldn't be considered as rude in my opinion.Tho imo It's not what you say, but how you say it.

    After watching this video and looking around my apartment, I realized that I've have been striving toward the gyaru style for years without even knowing it. I love this subculture so much, as far as feminism goes, I feel like gal's carry that badass Sailor Moon senshi girl power energy that's so feel good and just empowers everyone around them.
    Barring the potential classist stuff that comes from brands, I'm impressed at the support that exists and that there are people keeping it alive and helping each other be the best GAL they can be. I'm a guy in his 30s now, but I used to listen to Hamasaki Ayumi, Eurobeat, Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi back in the day. I never realized until recently that with my artistic appreciation for makeup and fashion came from my hidden lil gal heart 😂. I look way too manly to even attempt anything though. But who knows, maybe I can look into gyaruo stuff.

    I just found your channel and I absolutely adore it, and you. You're so easy to listen to, so cute and kind seeming. ANYWAYS enough fangirling over here, I have a question if anyone can answer...I have always had a secret admiration for Gyaru, I don't have any friends that are into it, or would even understand it.
    My question being, If I wanted to finally take my dream into the public and try Gyaru, would it be acceptable or frowned upon to try the style for Halloween, or for Comic Con, or Anime Con. I totally understand that I don't want to say or portray that Gyaru is a form of Cosplay....I guess It would just seem easier to me to try for an event that people dress up I guess? What are your thoughts?

      @coelhofofolps5153 2 роки тому +7

      There are lots of toned down gyaru make you could try, it also depends on the style of gyaru you're into because every style has its key points including makeup, kogal makeup is not as flashy so you should be okay ^^ but if you're not asian you would have to focus on the shape of the makeup a little bit more so its read as gyaru

    HELPP THE SAME GIRL ON THE THUMBNAIL IS ON MY PFP- anyways i love seeing other gyarus in the wild internet, and if u wanna be gyaru i definetely reccomend watching kawaii pateen makeup tutorials, explore which substyle you wanna be and make other gyaru friends! online friends or irl friends dont matter.. and if ur over 18, you can join a gyarusa! just a reminder to NOT support egg magazines. theyre problematic as fuck
