    Come chill, hang out, and listen to 3 friends talk all about GYARU! My friends Reila (@reilaless) & Yaya (@kuroyaya) both combined have more than 25 years (!!) of experience with gyaru and are both extremely passionate about it. We talk about their perspectives on Gyaru as black gals (Reila is Afro-Latina and Yaya is Black German), whether gyaru is considered blackfishing or cultural appropriation, their experiences being gyaru in their home countries of Peru and Germany, their favorite gyaru brands, and so much more. Recently, I and many others have noticed a ton of misinformation being spread about various J-Fashion (also known as Japanese Fashion) styles so I came up with the idea on Twitter one day to start a video series where I sit down and talk to people who have been part of these communities either for more than a decade or who are extremely active in their communities. Through this series, I am hoping to share the knowledge that these J-Fashion veterans have with others about the rich history & culture of this global J-Fashion community as well those wanting to try out these fashions for themselves. Spending time with all these wonderful people has been such a delight and I have learned so much as well! We go over the history, the evolution, advice for newbies, misconceptions, and a ton of other stuff about these various styles. I really hope that this is helpful, informative, and that you have a good time learning with all of us! o((*^▽^*))o

    I love that Reila and Yaya mentioned the men approaching them, asking their prices for sex work. I am from USA, but when I first moved to Australia a few years ago. I had the weirdest experience with a man follow me down the street when I was walking to the shops. asked to use my phone to call someone, and I was just being nice coz i thought he needed help. he asked me where i was going and said he was going there too, and said we should take the train it would be quicker. And I was like uhhhh no thanks, i'm fine walking, i need the exercise. lol then after that he was asking me how much i charge, and i'm like "excuse me for whatttttt??" He said he thought i was a prostitute, and wanted to go onto the train for me to "do things" to him , i'm not gonna be graphic the things he said. But I am sure you can imagine ughhhhhh. That felt so weird to me. Something I notice though maybe that is one reason Gal groups stick together in Japan, usually you will see a huuuuge group of super loud Gals who cause a scene. Maybe this is to attract attention in case anything like that does go wrong, they can attract pedestrians attention for help. but also i think female always feel safer in a group i think. it is sad it comes to this. but i think most importantly to say to people is to stay safe, no matter what fashion you choose to wear!! XX

    • @reilaless
      @reilaless 2 роки тому +53

      Yeah, that was so weird to me too! It’s definitely better to go out with friends to stay safer, which is something that makes me angry too. The fact that we can’t be safe anywhere by ourselves.
      So I understand when some girls (not only gals) are also afraid to go out fully dressed up or it’s common to go out in sweatpants and then changing once they meet all their friends. It’s so bad, it’s not us the ones who should be changing to stay safe, they’re the ones who should educate themselves! It’s under those thoughts that I decided to go out fully dressed from home and I would fight them if it’s necessary. 😤

      @@reilaless I hope that some day the world will be safe for women and Femme presenting persons, and everyone really! this reminds me of neojaponisme’s posts on gyaru history explaining that gyaru regardless of age would get approached by older men thinking they took part in ""compensated dating"" and how gyaru was heavily stereotyped to be corrupting the youth and whatnot :( it’s heartbreaking that when women express themselves through fashion, society inteprets us in such bad faith. i’m truly so sorry that happened to you and i hope you stay safe! much love

      I totally agree! They’re still black gyarus and as a result, they provided a lot of insight on being a blk gyaru and anti blkness surrounding/in the subculture. But I would love to hear different black voices as well. Maybe African Americans and blk westerns bc of the appropriation of culture specific to that region, darker skinned gyarus bc of colorism, some blk gyarus who can attest to featurism/texturism & maybe some more trans gyarus who can talk ab the intersection between blackness, gender identity and how it relates/is seen in the community.

      Just know the issue with that is, you're literally picking ONE Black human out of Billions to represent all of us. Ya get whatcha get doing that bro. It's like me picking a random Japanese human to find out what all of them think. The outcome could be good, bad, or super weird.

      @brooke.t.g.r5646 Рік тому +88

      @@navyman4 Respectfully, that is NOT the point of this comment or any like it. OP is not claiming any small group of people can accurately represent every single black person, issue, experience, identity, etc. But when you only bring on two Black people who belong to more privileged identities within the black diaspora, you’re missing out on a lot of different experiences that can be talked about. Us as black gyarus do not expect every single black gyaru to be brought onto a panel. We just want to avoid the potential issue mentioned prior.

Not denouncing their experiences in the video but like some comments said they're more racially ambiguous gals and it would have been nice to see some black folk in the community get a chance too actually speak for once. Regardless it's nice to see people speaking out more on these topics and educating others.

    Not sayin anyone is anything fishing. The issue Some black gyaru has, that it obvious part of the aesthetic was inspired by black women. But people try to hard to deny it. The braided in extensions and Mcbling fashion m are very big parts of gyaru, but there roots are in Black American millennial youth culture. Due to the military and expand of foreign caused and expansion in the presents of black you in Japan in mid 90s to early 2000. I know becaue I was one of those black youths in in Japan in my teens and early 20s at the hight of the fashion.

    Yep, I used to always get the "what's your cosplay?" questions! Doesn't happen so often now we can't go out very much though ^^;
    Also wanna touch on the colourism too- in Japan (and also in the UK) it also crosses with classism since often people with darker skin were poorer and worked outdoor jobs (hence their darker skin from being out in the sun all day) and were looked down upon in society, whereas pale skin was a sign of wealth as you could either work indoors or did not need to work. Tanning is now more popular in the UK and there is less emphasis on pale skin in Japan (which maybe is why we see less Japanese kurogyaru these days and new era gyaru are often much more toned down) so these societal ideals have changed a little (although in some areas they still exist, especially in the countryside). Thank you for an informative and fun chat Yaya and Reila

    not denouncing their blackness at all, their points are valid but they are pretty racially ambiguous especially to what mass majority of the world see as black which is a race and race is based solely on how you look especially skintone, like if they didn't say they were black/mixed I wouldn't even assume they were so I feel having them speak on blackfishing, blackface, etc is kind of redundant in a way, verses if you had dark skin racially black looking gyarus speaking on it, lol it's kind of like if lightskin black girls talked about colorism I mean sureeee they can make some points about it but they aren't the ones really effected by it

    • @laurentcathery273
      @laurentcathery273 2 роки тому +31

      I would in contrary assume that lightskin black people are most affected by blackfishing since blackfishers, most of the time, stay clear from changing their skintone to a dark skintone, they generally tan to a point where they seem lightskin and blur the line between races. Like yewh here on the internet, these two people seem ambiguous but i can assure you that in real life they wont seem white at all, cause most people irl dont blackfish and therefore you can see the difference between a white person and a person of color.

      @@laurentcathery273 racially ambiguous never equaled looking white so I don't know what you're getting at with that, and yes a lot of blackfishing, which has just become this "bronzed" tan trend is to look "mixed" or lightskin but here we are talking about gyarus where a lot of the blackfishing and tanning IS that of a dark skintone, a lot literally try to look as dark as possible sure some just tan lighter dark that would probably be their natural "dark" tan but majority reach a point of the same skintone of a natural dark brown, black person, and I'm not say all are doing in a mockery way cause some really say "black is beautiful" and like being dark skin but it gets projected that way to black people especially those naturally that skintone when they've probably been

    I agree that having a dark skinned gyaru speak on this topic would’ve added another layer of insight, but let’s stop the eugenics arguments in the comment section please. This is not a forum on whether a complete stranger’s identity is valid in your home country or not. This is about getting a wider range of perspectives of gyarus in different bodies, which again, the more diverse the range the better, so having a dark skinned gyaru would’ve made for an amazing and well-rounded interview (rather than just an okay interview). Anyways, To put it bluntly, white-passing individuals typically go through an different experience than that of people who are identifiably POC. So to have those who are white passing answer for the majority of "black gals" as the title implies is very misleading because the experience is inherently different. This is very much on topic, and no one is trying to demean the girls in the video by stating the obvious..

Alot of Balkan, turkish ppl and so on don't have pale skin or are we not considered White? (idk) I get rlly naturally tanned in summer. But I can't do it cuz I'm White? I have a feeling that those ppl only see the World in back and white... There are tons of other different races and simply saying you cant tan cuz your white doesnt make sense to me

Tan skin is not the beauty Standard for them. So what is it now. The country they originate from or the country the live in. Yk what I mean? Its a bit struggle for me personally. Light skin needs to be prepaired to receive melanin, especially if you have any skin condition tanning will NOT be easy thing! 😂
      There are carotine tablets to start with, and instead of solarium I recommend just spending time outside in the sun, having a walk, go to swim, picnic and so on.
      Always wear max sun protecting lotion (and protect your hair and face from too much sun). In the evening put generously after-sun lotion and glow boost lotion/toner for tanning. You can ask those from any skincare shop or search online.
      Tanning asks for patience, and it is something many light skin do wrong and get bad results. You can tan, just remember: preparation and patience. You'll look fabulous 😍🌺

      Hi there! So I wanted to address this as I do understand where people's frustrations are coming from regarding the chosen gals for this video. I was originally approached by one of these gals to make this video & to talk about this important topic (which is gyaru from the POV of POC) and they gave me suggestions for the second gal who will be in the video as well. Now I'm not putting the blame on these gals, I should've asked for more suggestions of darker skinned POC. But I really hope that no one takes away the fact that these two gals are black, and I appreciate you agreeing with that fact. They requested that I title this as "...Perspective of Black Gals" as they themselves are black. I think it's important to hear experiences from as many people as possible in the community. And I do have plans to make another gyaru from the POV of POC video, this time with dark skinned black gals. This J-Fashion series is on a little hiatus at the moment while I work through a lot of stuff going on but that'll be the first one that I'll make after I finish working on the Decora one I filmed way back in Oct/Nov. If you and anyone else has suggestions for people to feature in that video, please let me know and I will contact them to work on it. Thank you for your time and for your comment.

    I hope my question doesn't insult anyone. I genuinely don't understand why wearing fashion typical to poc or wanting to have a hair style with small braids or preferring darker skin color is seen as "black fishing" or "cultural appropriation", but poc borrowing things from the white cultures is seen as just neutral or positive thing. I mean, isn't it bad for the poc cultures if it's always seen negative if anyone wants to wear their style to any degree?
    I feel like it shouldn't be seen as a negative & degrading thing as a default, because people do admire different cultures and not just the white ones. So if we have double standards for who can wear what style, poc culltures will always remain alienating and "exotic" instead of familiar and cool to the majority of people. If people felt more free to wear whatever, they'd become more mainstream, more appreciated and just a beautiful part of fashion culture, not "a race thing" like it's always made to be.

    • @Kenny-zv2wk

      The definition of cultural appropriation is when someone takes something from another culture or race and claims that they made it and that it's theirs...as well as just pretending to be a part of said race or culture, or just say and do things in a disrespectful and mocking way. In my opinion and I'm not going to try to speak over black ppl (like I'm not black enough to really say if it's bad or not when it comes to braids or dreads. In fact, I've talked to some of my friends and some of them said that the reason that they have an issue with whyte (had to spell it weird bc yt) ppl wearing those styles is bc it's damagining for their hair. Since whyte ppl don't have the same hair texture as them which I agree with and understand. Like it can cause a lot of breakage. I've gotta my hair done with like 5 braids on the side and the rest being wavy but I did get it done in Mexico, and ik that some ppl are gonna get angry at me bc I did that but I'm like Hispanic and I just got it done bc I think that they look cute and I was NOT doing it to try to look black. So yeah, everyone's always gonna have a different opinion bc that's life. My advice is to just try to be respectful but if you're just whyte and not mixed of a poc then I would just stay away from doing those styles. Like I'm even nervous abt getting it done bc I'm mixed and look ambiguous so it would just make things worse for me. But yeah for other things that I can actually speak abt...when it comes Hispanic/Mexican stuff I wouldn't find it offensive if anyone wore like a jalisco dress, sombrero, pancho, etc...as long as they aren't being disrespectful. Tbh it would just make me happy if anything. But yeah I don't speak for every hispanic or mexican person, this is just my opinion on the matter. When it comes to black culture I recommend just talking to multiple black ppl, bc it's the sensible thing to do.

      Oh I forgot to mention that the reason poc ppl take whyte things is bc their features and culture were seen as ugly, barbaric, and weird by many whyte ppl throughout history so they do so to fit in with toxic beauty standards, and it's not just bc of whyte ppl but also just bc of colorism in general amongst poc ppl.

    • @Kotifilosofi
      @Kotifilosofi Рік тому +7

      @@Kenny-zv2wk I feel your definition of cultural appropriation is the original one. However, these days it literally takes nothing else than a white person wearing something recognizable from any POC culture in public, and the chances are it's gonna be called cultural appropriation. It on and itself is seen disrespectful that a white person wears it (has any association with it), they don't have to do anything especially or to be over-the-top to be seen as disrespectful.
      I've never heard of the "bad for your hair type" argument but it's always the "cultural appropriation" argument with the braids. You don't even know if the person is gonna have them for a day or a week or how long. It's just a hair style.
      Imo it's the center of the problem that people have to be afraid to even talk about it. It's such a pity that fashion and style is disabled by political correctness. That will just alienate us from each others, instead of finding things we have common and things to connect around. I wish people could trust and love rather than distrust and hate each others. Everyone doesn't always have malicious aims. It's as irresponsible to see everyone (in one group) that way as it is to (actually) appropriate cultures.

    • @Kotifilosofi
      @Kotifilosofi Рік тому +2

      @@Kenny-zv2wk I doubt a white person for example wearing braids is trying to do that. Rather the white person is just seen as "too privileged" to "earn the right to wear the style". I think any style can accentuate the features of any ethnicity/race beautifully.

    while every persons perspective matters maybe don’t put “black gals” in title of video if the guests aren’t actually black cause I’m sure a darker toned persons experiences are way different if not worse. Like, maybe put “mixed gals” or something along those lines if you’re going to make it that specific. Imagine how you would feel if u came across a video that seems to represent your race but when you watch it it’s not so. i even showed this to my husband to make sure I wasn’t being crazy. Without any context I just showed him the title and then showed him the video and his reaction was the same as mine. And being that he’s a civil rights lawyer he felt the title was wildly misleading and doesn’t help the black community at all. Also you might get accused of black fishing. Just my thoughts. Your videos are adorable just fix the title of this one. 😬

      Ok to clarify, I see one of them is not white, but you have to understand that gyaru fashion takes elements that are innately from black culture and none of these people are black. Feed in braids were in no way popular outside of the black american population until they brought it to foreign cultures around the globe with pop culture. The problem is that people use these aspects of black culture for fashion, and give no credit where it's due, some even go so far as to darken their skin to look " exotic" and call themselves "black girls" which is pretty questionable unto itself. This in no way means that gyaru is bad, but when white people choose to dress in this style, they need to be aware that by trying to fit into "gyaru" style, they could actually be doing something disrespectful. Gyaru didn't invent many elements of its style, it borrowed a lot and put it all together into something new.
