As I type this message at just halfway through the video, I am wondering whether you will be cleaning up the paint splatters that appear to be on the inside of the back of the dresser. Yes, I know that they will not be normally seen, but if you are going to clean it up now, it will be quite awkward. I imagine to get good access to the inside of the back unless you do decide to remove the back panel.
@@IrishAnnie Was it worth spending all that time though? How many hours did she spend and what did the customer pay? I bet she only ended up with $10 an hour when workshop and materials are taken into consideration. She could have earned more flipping burgers at McDonald's!
Trena, someone who has never repaired or refinished a piece like this cannot realize how much time and hard work let alone talent goes into your work. Another great job, hope you continue to do so in our throw away society.
The reason could be one of a few things….no appreciation for wood, no skill, no money, no imagination, no time, lazy……. I do get your point though. When you watch a video like this, that is exactly what you wonder, WHY?????😅
Great job. Look at that nice wood that was under that nasty paint. I especially like the glass pulls they give it a old time look. Drawers are hard for me also. I thank you for the help on them. Stay warm and have a wonderful day. Thank you.👍👍
Welcome back, hope you all had a super festive break. You are an artist, and this was a master class in furniture repair and restoration, the end result is stunning. I really enjoyed your processes every step of the way. I am so impressed with your attention to detail and hard work. Super well done. Stay well and take care 💕🙏
There is a mini iron , brand is clover. Think sized to iron dolls clothes, but with a long handle. I have been using it for veneer repairs in tight places, and found it darn handy. Quilters use them. Just thought I'd mention it in case it was useful to you. Great video!
In my opinion far too many treasures have been scrapped and replaced with cheap modern schlock. We became a throw-away and move culture that lost its appreciation for history and quality, and now after so much has been lost, we are scrambling to save some of what is left. What is true with furniture is also true with architecture, literature, automobiles, language and many other things. We have made ourselves culturally poorer without realizing what we have done. Thank you Trena for your significant role in preserving our heritage.
Wow, it is hard to believe that something that looked fit for the burn pile can be turned back into an absolute little gem like this. Your skills are amazing and your videos are so enjoyable to watch. Thank you so much for posting.
when you first worked on the color for the plugs,, I thought oh no,, that stands out more than just the plain plug,, but you were able to hide them almost completely,, Good Job.
Those plug repairs took a lot of effort. In the end, I could see only one of the six, and even the one that I could pick out is only because I was focused on looking for it! AWESOME job. Beautiful.
20:02 these kinds of repairs is what I'm here for. MUCH better than the former clunky slap-on 'fixes'. I love how you restore the original shape of the piece. Applause!
Wow , as usual the end result knocks my socks off! ( An old 1950s saying). Your ability to hide those plugs & your leg repair is amazing. A truely beautiful job , I'm sure the owner was very happy.
Love that the carvings look like little Happy smiling faces! Shows how happy that little piece is now. Thanks for sharing your skills/artistry with us & Please continue saving furniture like you do; Love it ♥♥♥!
I love the fact that you use a ball-peen hammer. It takes me back to when I was a boy and used to go to my dad's shed to watch him doing whatever was his project at the time. Even though he was able to work with wood, he was a senior engineer at Ford's, and his tools in his shed were mostly for metalwork, including his ball-peen which he used for everything and he referred to it as his 'knockometer' - I never saw him use a claw hammer. I only discovered them when I did woodwork lessons at school. Yes, you using one, brings happy memories back to me from nearly 70 years ago, and I thank you for this.
@@johnsfurniturerepair I'm so sorry to hear that. When dad succumbed to Parkinson's, his shed was demolished before it fell down and his stuff was moved to the one next to the house. I don't know whether his hammer was amongst it.
Your customer must be really happy with that. The difference at the end compared to what you started with is night n day. I would be proud to have that in my house.
Beautiful finish. I’m glad the customer didn’t want it painted , as it would be shame to hide that beautiful grain. Great camouflage of the dowels. I found the front of the draws an unusual design , but complements the style of the piece.
@OfficialJohnfurniture. Thank- you for thinking me worthy of a gift , unfortunately I live in New Zealand , and I wouldn’t expect you to send something That will cost an arm and a leg to get here . Being able to watch your restorations is reward enough. Regards Greg .
Great job! I really like your choice of stain. It keeps the piece light enough to show the character of the grain but dark enough to give it some body. Well done.
When you started, I thought why would you take such garbage in your shop. But you prove me wrong. Very nice work. Thanks for sharing your skill with us.
Wow Trena!, you have so much dedication to these old pieces and you must have the patience of a saint, fantastic work. I love watching these, the temptation is to whizz to the end and see the finished article.😂😂😂. Nice blog

I've used a plug cutter to remove a custom dowel from inside the furniture somewhere when I need to fill a small hole. One plug can be cut into thin veneer patches for multiple repairs. This makes for an easier match when finishing. 👍 Very nice job on this dresser.
Excellent restoration on a vintage 1900s Eastlake Entry Dresser or Console Dresser. I should note: it most likely originally had antique brass two screw pulls, two per drawer, which is why it had the extra holes. You might want to get with the owner, show her some photos from the internet, and see if she would want you to replace the crystal ball pulls with brass handle pulls.
Yes, I agree. Those crystal pulls change the piece and not for the better. Old Eastlake hardware is widely available and not expensive . It's a shame that the light of Trena's beautiful restoration work seems a little dimmed by the wrong pulls. And replacing with the proper pulls would have saved all that angst over the plugs, too.
Beautiful Trena, many aspects of renovation, fascinating how you go about deciding how to achieve each small part of the puzzle , another lovely video with a perfect end, thank you !
Ach wie schön❤Man konnte richtig hören, wie das Kästchen zu atmen begann, als der hässliche Lack weg war und die wunderschönen Details zu sehen waren!😂
And the magic continues! I do woodworking and have restored a few pieces. I continue to get some GREAT ideas for future projects. Thank you. So many times I see old furniture set at the curb and left because no one wants to take the time to restore them. To me the "real wood" furniture is worth so much more than the modern pressboard junk. Again, Thank you.
I love the color on this dresser. On a side note, I love my ball peen hammer too. I have a really old one that was my grandfather's. The handle has been replaced, but it fits my hand so much better than some of the regular hammers.
Trena, Wonderful restoration! One question; I know I have seen you present the finished project to a customer on one occasion and it was wonderful to see their appreciation and reaction to it. Is there any way that perhaps more of your customers would allow themselves to be filmed so that we might see their joy at the finished project as well? Perhaps that isn't possible, but I for one, would love to see it. If not, I will just have to continue to imagine 😁. Take care and thank you for sharing your passion. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
You CAN make a silk purse out of a sow's ear! Honestly, when the piece first appeared, I thought "trash it!" Shows what I know! Your ability to match colors is really top notch.
W-O-W-! Such skill and commitment to turn a rather 'ugly duckling' dresser into the 'swan' it is now. Trena - your work is just amazing! Love to watch it. Thank you.
Awesome refinishing of the dresser! 🎉 Appreciate the information about repairing drawer guides. Thank you! We have a 100+ year-old, solid wood, highboy dresser that needs this type of drawer repair. It’s a family heirloom which is in excellent condition except for the guides.
Every time I watch her I'm so totally blown away. Each piece is magnificent when she's done. I wish Trena were my neighbor. I would volunteer my time sweeping the floor just to be around that brilliant craftsmanship.
