    Ms. Trena my dear. My name is Tim Forbes in Savannah, Ga. I sorta fell into the furniture business when I was 14, now 72. I still work a 40+ hours repair/restoring casegoods and upholstery. Your eye for quality is so refreshing to me. Your skilled thinking and application of your work is so evident. You demonstrate care of the outside visual appearance as well as the unseen that folks may never see. Very much me. I care about those steps/foundation equally as the outward appearance. NO SHORT CUTS! I want to extend to you the greatest compliment for your craftsmanship/ craftswomanship that I can express to you. You are, to me, watching your videos is like watching Bob Ross create one of his paintings on tv. Thanks, Oh, Peace, Luv and Rock and Roll, always.

    The main thing I don't like about watching you repair furniture. It makes me realize what a horrible job I've done repairing every piece of furniture I've ever fixed in the last 40 years, lol. Another amazing job. Thanks for taking us along 👍.

    An elegant result. Side by side, they came in with barely a hint of that elegance, and your skill brought it back to life!
    I so agree- every chair is a big job, as big as a table! Four legs and a top, bracing and supports. Plus, the back! More work than a table.
    I admire your facility at staining, shading and finishing. So many techniques! I never suspected.

    Watching you restore these chairs is a testament to your skills. It is also a testament to the quality knowledge passed from your parents to you. It seems clear the last person to attempt repair of these chairs was inept at best. The thinking was in the right direction. But the repairs were anything but correct.

    As an amateur woodworker in the US, I was introduced to Robertson screws when using Kreg pocket hole jigs. These screws are superb because when using power drivers, they don't torque out like Phillips and slotted screws do.
    What most handymen in the US don't realize is that newer electrical outlets and switches sold in both Canada and the US allow the choice of at least 3 different types of screwdrivers to attach wires- slotted, #2 Phillips or #1 Robertson. The Robertson is superior!

    • @davidbaldwin2729
      @davidbaldwin2729 11 місяців тому

      yes I also was first introduced to square drive (Robertson) screws via the Kreg pocket hole system. Here is the US a lot of screws now come with Torx heads now adays and so I now only use them for all woodworking projects. Never going back to slotted or Phillips, they are just the worst. The europeans now put a lot of "reverse torx" bolts in automobiles. Amazing that Canadians have had much better screws in common use for more than 100 years.

    To me the repairs are tricky and, in some cases, difficult and maybe tedious but the real magic is in your ability to do the finishes. I absolutely cannot get over your skill in doing the finishes, remarkable.
    I’m not impressed with the structural design of these chairs. Given the arms, the integration of the back and rear legs I see only minimal help in preventing racking from side to side. I think that is a major part of what led to the original problems. I’ll bet you see them again in about 20 years. 😃

  • @forbol

    Of all the many skills you possess, your knowledge and skill with stain/color/finish is masterful. I’ve futzed around with stains and coloring enough to know how difficult what you make look easy is. I feel this skill is not something that can be directly taught, rather it is acquired through years of experience. Thanks for the knowledge.

    I know there are various ways of doing things. When that chair seat broke, I think my late hubby's method of fixing that would have been to let it come all the way apart, and then glue it back together using biscuits. 🙂
