I grew up on GN'R my grandfather hated their music he always taunted me calling Axl Rose, (Axl Grease) well when the Civil War single came out he definitely changed his mind. He was a WW2 Vet. And that song struck a chord with him so much he had a lot more respect for my music from then on. I can't listen to Civil War without thinking of my grandfather. R.I.P........

Even tho Appetite for Destruction is considered the most influential album of the 80s, the writing chops and musical talent that went into the Illusions' albums have increased ten fold. I firmly believe Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 are GNR's best work and an auditory masterpiece.

It's now taken way out of context since it's pro government taxation and long term funding for the military.
This song came out just a few months after I returned home from Iraq after the first Gulf war. Even though US casualties were minimal in that war, I saw first hand the death and destruction we caused to the Iraqis. My son was born just a few weeks before I deployed, and I remember looking down at a dead Iraqi soldier about my age, and wondering about his family, and his life. Did he have children? They try to dehumanize the enemy, but they're just like us. They bleed, they die, they have families. They didn't want to be there.

I caught that tour in Miami and it was fantastic! You're right, Slash was phenomenal! The whole show was just stellar. Was so cool to see it all full circle... I saw them as a teen as the opening act for The Cult in New Orleans supporting Appetite, and again a few years later on the Illusion tour (w/ Soundgarden opening). Both shows I'll never forget! Never in a million years did I think I'd ever get to see them again. A lot has been said about Axl's voice in concert, but all three times I've seen em he was absolutely FANTASTIC.
"You Could Be Mine" GnR did this song for Terminator II. It's excellent! Btw, Slash teamed up with Myles Kennedy (Alterbridge) and released some AMAZING music. My personal favorite is "Ghost" live from Stoke, UK

Granted they weren’t best friends, Axl and Slash definitely had chemistry. Axl was more than aware of Slash’s talent and most of his resentment towards Slash came from the fact that Slash would get wasted daily and nearly died form drug OD multiple times. But as far as Slash goes nobody could make the guitar find the perfect tone to fit Axl’s emotion better than Slash. The 6-7 year span that they worked together created some amazing music

Most of the Guns songs was written by Izzy Stradlin and Axl. In my opinion, Izzy was the real songwriter, and Slash did a great job doing the solos and fills. In my opinion, Izzy was more relevant as Slash. After Izzy left the band, the chemistry was gone too.
Axl probably cared about Slash too much. It has been cited multiple times that he loved Slash like a brother but felt slash was throwing away his greatness to substance abuse. Axl just felt like nobody was there to care about him, he didn’t feel ready to tour in the 90’s and was told if Slash or Duff died it was on him. So he went along with it and said he set out to make everyone’s life miserable because of the way the UYI tour was handled.
Slash did leave because of Axl’s nature. Honestly they began heading in different directions musically. Axl got into punk, grunge, nine inch nails, and Slash just wanted to keep making appetite. Axl writes melody and lyrics first and then hands it over to the band to figure out the other instrumental arrangement and Slash would write guitar songs first then hand them to Axl. Neither wanted to do it the other persons way.
The intro is taken from the '67 movie classic Cool Hand Luke, and is spoken by Strother Martin. This is one of my favourite GnfR's tracks. I like how Lex gets into the vibe of a song, soaking it all up. Then Brad, ' wait a minute' 😉 breaks the song down and makes sense of it. Great reaction from you both 👍👏👏👏

The line “D’you wear a black armband when they shot the man who said peace could last forever?” Breaks my heart every time I hear it. It’s about the assassination of Martin Luther King and how people wore black armbands as a sign of being in mourning and also to protest the war. When Axl was little, his mother took him to a protest to hear MLK speak and it had a lasting effect on him.
The opening dialog is from the movie Cool Hand Luke and the part where it says "We practice selective annihilation of mayors and government officials for example to create a vacuum..." is a quote from a Peruvian war general, according to Axl Rose. Great song off of a great album! GnR, as a band, dominated the late 80's and early 90's. They seem to have come out of nowhere and just exploded. I was 17 when Appetite for Destruction was released and was blown about by the grit and power of that album, which still rings true today. I was already a heavy metal fan from Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax and Slayer... the "big 4" but GnR was different in a whole other way. Kinda like when Nirvana and the grunge sound blew up in the mid 90's.
This song will never get old and needs to be heard. Whether people realize or acknowledge it, we're fighting our own civil war in our country right now. Brad, your analysis is spot on as always!

I have always felt that this was one of GNR's best songs. Definitely in the top 3. Like any other track, created by any artist, it speaks a lot of truth, and as far as I know was never played on the radio. If there is truth to the message it will not get pushed to main stream. I may be wrong, but I had a radio on 90% of the time back then and I do not ever recall hearing this played. I found it on the album (sorry - CD). Brad is 100% correct, I also believe that this song will survive the test of time. Humans tend to not be bright enough to learn from the past. We will continue to behave the same, and there will be many more conflicts in the future.

Axl Rose. The man of a thousand voices. He is like a chameleon in his vocals. When I was a teenager I honestly didn;t realize for years that he sang the entire lead vocal on "It's So Easy". I thought that he was sharing vocals with Izzy because his voice sounded so different at times in that song that I couldn't believe it was all Axl singing.
I could feel Brad taking a time to think about the lyrics, it's a timeless theme indeed and make us think a lot about wars and the hate splitting people apart. Lex, it's really magical how Axl and Slash's tone and music fit so well, it blens so good, it's not just a guy playing guitar in an amazing way, it's a guitar talking to the voice of Axl and giving the music the feeling that it needs.
The dynamic of GNR is that Axl brings the musicianship and lyrics while Duff and Slash bring that hard rock and edge. They are total Yin and Yang. And that's what made them have conflict with each other. But also combined as a powerful dynamic.
7:50 this is the most heartwarming thing I've heard in a long time. Axl and Slash had a very complicated existence together, and still do. And I love that you recognize the innocence and the beauty in their musical relationship.
The entire first half of the video I can literally see the wheels in Brad's mind turning. Normally Lex steals the show with her incredible beauty but I was waiting for Brad's commentary this time. He likes to think and this is the perfect song for it.
I'm glad you guys finally reacted to this. This was a really underrated song when it came out because as teenagers, it was probably too deep to really get into. As kids, it was all about kegs, parties, friends, and blasting Metal til' the speakers almost blew out. It holds a lot more meaning for me today than it ever did back then even though the message is the same.

I saw Slash and Myles Kennedy live in 2019 and they were incredible. They have a nice acoustic of Sweet Child O' Mine.
I actually like more of Myles Kennedy singing this song, can't explain why, maybe more modern production?
Granted they weren’t best friends, Axl and Slash definitely had chemistry. Axl was more than aware of Slash’s talent and most of his resentment towards Slash came from the fact that Slash would get wasted daily and nearly died form drug OD multiple times. But as far as Slash goes nobody could make the guitar find the perfect tone to fit Axl’s emotion better than Slash. The 6-7 year span that they worked together created some amazing music
No, Axl didnt' give a one single fuck about Slash getting wasted, they both were using smack, his biggest resentment is that Slash finally realized and called out the fact that Axl is an egotistical, racist douchebag, and went on to better things.

Most of the Guns songs was written by Izzy Stradlin and Axl. In my opinion, Izzy was the real songwriter, and Slash did a great job doing the solos and fills. In my opinion, Izzy was more relevant as Slash. After Izzy left the band, the chemistry was gone too.
Axl probably cared about Slash too much. It has been cited multiple times that he loved Slash like a brother but felt slash was throwing away his greatness to substance abuse. Axl just felt like nobody was there to care about him, he didn’t feel ready to tour in the 90’s and was told if Slash or Duff died it was on him. So he went along with it and said he set out to make everyone’s life miserable because of the way the UYI tour was handled.
Slash did leave because of Axl’s nature. Honestly they began heading in different directions musically. Axl got into punk, grunge, nine inch nails, and Slash just wanted to keep making appetite. Axl writes melody and lyrics first and then hands it over to the band to figure out the other instrumental arrangement and Slash would write guitar songs first then hand them to Axl. Neither wanted to do it the other persons way.

It’s about the assassination of Martin Luther King and how people wore black armbands as a sign of being in mourning and also to protest the war.
When Axl was little, his mother took him to a protest to hear MLK speak and it had a lasting effect on him.
He's talking about Kennedy. After he got assassinated they had black armbands. To show support of the Kennedys.

The opening dialog is from the movie Cool Hand Luke and the part where it says "We practice selective annihilation of mayors and government officials for example to create a vacuum..." is a quote from a Peruvian war general, according to Axl Rose. Great song off of a great album! GnR, as a band, dominated the late 80's and early 90's. They seem to have come out of nowhere and just exploded. I was 17 when Appetite for Destruction was released and was blown about by the grit and power of that album, which still rings true today. I was already a heavy metal fan from Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax and Slayer... the "big 4" but GnR was different in a whole other way. Kinda like when Nirvana and the grunge sound blew up in the mid 90's.

I could have as much fun in a blues bar or in a honky tonk as I could in maybe a club in Memphis or Atlanta. I could have as much fun in a mosh pit. Good music reaches out and grabs you. Rock has a special spot in my heart. But so does rap. Country. Gospel. Blues. I love music.

I have always felt that this was one of GNR's best songs. Definitely in the top 3.
Like any other track, created by any artist, it speaks a lot of truth, and as far as I know was never played on the radio.
If there is truth to the message it will not get pushed to main stream.
I may be wrong, but I had a radio on 90% of the time back then and I do not ever recall hearing this played. I found it on the album (sorry - CD).
Brad is 100% correct, I also believe that this song will survive the test of time. Humans tend to not be bright enough to learn from the past.

Axl Rose. The man of a thousand voices. He is like a chameleon in his vocals. When I was a teenager I honestly didn;t realize for years that he sang the entire lead vocal on "It's So Easy". I thought that he was sharing vocals with Izzy because his voice sounded so different at times in that song that I couldn't believe it was all Axl singing.
I could feel Brad taking a time to think about the lyrics, it's a timeless theme indeed and make us think a lot about wars and the hate splitting people apart.
Lex, it's really magical how Axl and Slash's tone and music fit so well, it blens so good, it's not just a guy playing guitar in an amazing way, it's a guitar talking to the voice of Axl and giving the music the feeling that it needs.
When Brad said “They probably aren’t trying to learn lessons” that really hit me hard. They’re not, are they? 🥺
The dynamic of GNR is that Axl brings the musicianship and lyrics while Duff and Slash bring that hard rock and edge. They are total Yin and Yang. And that's what made them have conflict with each other. But also combined as a powerful dynamic.
It can't be overstated how much Duff brought to the band in terms of arrangements, let alone the bass parts.

7:50 this is the most heartwarming thing I've heard in a long time. Axl and Slash had a very complicated existence together, and still do. And I love that you recognize the innocence and the beauty in their musical relationship.
The entire first half of the video I can literally see the wheels in Brad's mind turning. Normally Lex steals the show with her incredible beauty but I was waiting for Brad's commentary this time. He likes to think and this is the perfect song for it.

I'm glad you guys finally reacted to this. This was a really underrated song when it came out because as teenagers, it was probably too deep to really get into. As kids, it was all about kegs, parties, friends, and blasting Metal til' the speakers almost blew out. It holds a lot more meaning for me today than it ever did back then even though the message is the same.
I remember listening to this song on a tape in third grade, I always knew what it was about.
@@naeshort7909 I always knew what it was about too. It just didn't hit back then like it does today. As a teenager, nobody I knew was sitting around talking about politics, government, wars, the rights and wrongs of the past, present and future, etc.. We were too busy being kids.
I remember listening to this as a kid, asking my mom what civil meant, and what civil war meant - I still understood what the song was about, but on a much simpler level.

I'd like to add... throughout watching you both during this entire song, I really think you both compliment each other so well. I think... Brad, you keep Lex grounded and cause her to look within to see things she may have not seen without your words.
