    Got a bottle of High West American Prairie Barrel Select at 52.1%. Get the same nose as Daniel with the bananas and nice sweetness with some more bite in the taste.
    Just want to thank you for the awesome videos and knowledge you guys spread out for us. Love it!

    I love how Rex seems almost surprised that many of the innovations surrounding the manufacturing of whiskey seem to be based on frugal decisions or happy accidents. Seems pretty logical to me that a bunch of guys making intoxicating beverages would make a lot of discoveries by "accident". At one point they were using what ever barrels that could be found at a cheap price. They just keep the ones that work. That's why you never hear of pickled herring finished scotch.

    Guys, it happened! The reverse whisk(e)y notes experience...
    There's a local butcher shop here, that makes their own products like jerky and smoked meats and whatnot. There's also a deli counter and a few aisles of produce and grocery type stuff. In short, the place has a unique (or so I thought) smell, that I've always loved.
    I walked in yesterday and it hit me immediately.... the place smells exactly like the bottle of Ardbeg TEN, that I just finished!

    Regarding the question on adding oak chips or spirals: I've tried both the toasted french oak chips and toasted american oak spirals in various whiskies. In my experience, the chips will add tanins very quickly, and really should only be used in whisky for a few hours before the tanin flavors are overpowering, though you do get some nice butterscotch flavors from it. The oak spirals can be left in the whisky for days and days and days and the whisky keeps getting better and more interesting in an ongoing experiment. Though, I broke my spiral in half and dropped about 3" into the whisky, so using a full length spiral may have a quicker effect.

    It was mentioned a few episodes back that you guys recommend going to a bar to try different whiskeys. I just wanted to say if you can make it to a tasting event the cost goes way down. I live in Fargo ND and a local shop does tastings for free then have discounts on those if you choose to buy. If you can share this with the whiskey tribe it'd be appreciated. Keep up them coming with the videos.

    I pointed out the essential cheapness of the Scots, and this being the probable ultimate origin of the used barrel tradition, some months ago. As someone of half Scottish ancestry, I have the right to do this. It's also true. For instance, I used an old CRT television for years after flat screens were standard, simply because it still worked.

    Daniel and Rex, I've been watching you guys for a while now and continue to find videos of whiskeys I drink that you've already reviewed EXCEPT the first bourbon I ever got into: 1792. It's a super popular bourbon here in KY and today's video made me think of it. I'm dying to see what you guys think of the Small Batch and Ridgemont Reserve. I keep both in my stock at all times and want to see what you guys think. I've looked up your collection on the website and couldn't find that you guys even have it. Easy to find and easy to drink. Definitely one I recommend but want to hear your thoughts.

    Liquor laws suffer from a condition I call wikipedia regulation. It's not that there are a bunch of laws passed, it's that a bunch of regulations were proposed by a bunch of different people at a bunch of different times, and have been frankensteined onto one another over time.
    This would be a wonderful point to go in and try to reform TTB regulations and bring some consistency to definitions, but there's not really a compelling lobby for it. There's always "something more important" so it gets pushed off.

    The high west American prairie bourbon has an age statement on the back in the third paragraph. It states that the blended bourbons are all at least 2 years old like Daniel said they would need to be. It’s right next to where they say they give 10% of their profits to the American Prairie Reserve

    First-time, longtime here as well as proud Canadian of secretly Amazing whiskeys. I'm wondering what your suggestions for starting a distillery would be (as I am looking into starting one myself), clearly having the basics like smell & tasting notes unlike the first bottle, but as far as prefered grains, the number of times you run it through the stills, small barrel vs large barrel, etc..? This is probably a whiskey biscuits video!

    So oak is not all the same, red oak, white oak, when making a barrel, do any whiskey makers, require say spring harvesting sap running vs fall winter less sap, I know per previous episodes that kiln drying vs natural drying changes the woods cells. I carve wood, and you can really distinguish the difference in a woods difficulty to cut , kiln dry much harder, natural dryed easier to carve.

    A few days ago, I was hanging out with a friend and we noticed we only had common place bottles left on the shelf. Recently we had been on a streak of more and more complex whiskeys. For example, over the weekend we bottled-down an Ardbeg Corryvreckan. So we looked at the shelf and seemed a bit bored with the options. We had Makers Mark, Bulleit Bourbon, Jameson, Glenlevit, and Monkey Shoulder. So rather than just drinking what we had we decided to have a blending competition. The results were mixed…pun intended… but we weren’t that impressed. That made me wonder what Daniel and Rex would have come up with if they had been there. What blend would you have come up with? Also, if you were to build a home bar specifically for blending, which five bottles would you pick?
    Thanks and another great video guys.

    Dear Dan and Rex,
    I just discovered your channel this past week (caught onto it from watching your re-do of Pewdiepie's funny but uninformative "very nice" reviews). I love what you guys do, and I already have a big list of whisky and bourbon to try (really pumped for The Classic Laddie!). As an experienced cigar smoker , it's well known that pairing with whisky affects the flavors you get from the cigar. Do you find the reverse to be true as well, that the process of smoking affects what you get from your whisky on the nose and palate?
    Thanks for the excellent content, and can't wait to share your reviews and suggestions with my friends!

    I was hoping you would touch on barrel ageing a cheaper whiskey. Yes it will take time, but it could lend to quick update videos. I really want to try aging a cheap whisky for a long time and see how good it can be. I keep reading those small 2 litre barrels are only good for a short period of aging before it goes sour and too woody.

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but straight bourbon only needs an age statement if it’s between 2-4 years old.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 років тому

      That's right! But it has to be the youngest of the blend. So even though there are 6 and 10 yr old whiskey in this bottle, it has to say "2+ years old" if it also contains a 2yr old barrel in the mix.

    Something I’ve been curious about, but haven’t taken the time to research so I figured I’d mooch the knowledge instead!
    Anywho, do any distilleries add other ingredients into the barrels to alter the flavors of the whiskey (fruit, wood staves, spices, etc.) that are then filtered out later?
    Inquiring minds want to know.
    Also, I sympathize with Daniel on the whole “being called Dan” thing. As a fellow Daniel, we know that “Dan” is synonymous with boring accountants and pencil pushers. Daniels are mysterious, and sophisticated men. We have many leather-bound books, and our apartments smell of rich mahogany.
    Tl;dr: Do distilleries add stuff to barrels besides the whisk(e)y? Daniel’s rule. Dan’s suck.

    Am I hurting my whiskey if I leave pour spouts in the bottles? I'm talking about the spouts like any bar puts into bottle to make it easier to pour. I leave the little rubber caps on, but will air somehow get in there and ruin a bottle before I have time to finish it? Thanks guys!

    • @WhiskeyVault

    Hey guys, I've been trying to practice smelling whisky and pick out different notes, and I thought about how (supposedly) the left and right side of the brain process information differently (the left being more analytical, the right more creative). Do you know if this concept also holds when smelling whisky, and you process smells differently if the glass is held closer to your left nostril than your right nostril? (More of a Daniel question because I wouldn't expect Rex to stoop to my level of nerdiness).

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 років тому

      Oh man, this is a great questions. And yes it has to do with left and right, but not because of nostril size. It has to do with where your nose senses end up first. The senses in your nose go straight to the part of your brain responsible for memory and emotion. Which is why smells evoke feelings and memories first. AFTER that, it's rerouted to critical thinking to make a decision about what's happening. That's why you can understand a smell without some kind of historical experience to tie it to.
      that's the short version. I hope it helps!

    How would "bourbon" taste if it was aged in used barrels vs. virgin barrels? I understand it wouldn't be bourbon at that point, but would it taste closer to scotch?

    • @WhiskeyVault

    • @UnboundOdysseus
      @UnboundOdysseus 6 років тому

      Some Canadian whiskies are aged in first fill bourbon barrels. We usually distill and age the grains separately, though. Sometimes they’re “married” in virgin barrels for a second maturation before bottling. The result is glorious, like in Forty Creek’s Double Barrel Reserve.

    So just about every time i buy a new whiskey, i smell and taste it, and compare my finding against yours. Each time, I find that what I found is W A Y off from what you guys find regarding nose and palette. For example, the High West, I found orange, floral, sea spray, and a light woody taste. Am i doing something wrong? What are some good methods to refine my nose and mouf?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 років тому

      You are doing it perfectly. Think of it this way. Your brain is a pattern recognition machine. So when you smell something, your brain immediately tries to match it to a pattern it already knows. Your reaction will vary wildly based on past experiences. Carry on!
      The only good thing to know is that when someone says "x" you usually find "y"

    I love Rex but sometime's watching Daniel working with Rex is like trying to have a conversation with a person who has a screaming baby in tow. Rex, man... don't give Mooches a bad name. It's not a mooch move to keep dirty glasses horded for any reason... it's just disruptive and disgusting. PSA - There are lovable mooches and a-hole mooches... mooches get to decide which one they are.

    Didn't Pernod have a problem with absinthe because of copper pots and brain damage ? Is this a thing with whiskey?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 років тому

      What happens in a copper pot is different than what happens during distillation. The copper remains in the leftover wash. It doesn't make it through the distillation process to the outside.

    Bottom line. Use pre used bourbon barrels and get delicious whisky. A good portion of the amazing flavor profile in scotch is left over bourbon. You're welcome Scotland. .
