Hey guys. Hello from BC, Canada. I've been watching your site for a couple months now. I was one of those guys who did the mix and whiskey,. Started with Canadian Club, Gibson, then Wiser's. Since I started watching you I have tried to get into the whiskey straight up and enjoy the flavour, instead of going for the sloppy drunk. My problem is I can't seem to get past the alchol smell and taste. I've been starting another route in by doing the old fashion with various whiskey's to develop my taste buds. By the way so far Buffalo Trace is pretty good this way. Is this a sound solution.
Tried lagavulin as my first scotch. Loved the first smokey sip, but soon after all I tasted was band-aid and I guess iodine? Is that the peat? Found myself reaching for anything I could just to get the taste out of my mouth, which lasted for hours. Would other types of smoke have the same effect?
I'm one of the people going back to some of you old videos. most of the time, when I finally have a glass of the whisky and I just enjoy it when I first experience it and then get your impressions on top of mine. That helps me a lot to search for some more notes and sometime widen my pallet a bit. the other vids a just magnificent. just can't stop coming back to rexweek! we really need a rexmonth!!!! :D
Whenever I drink a peaty whisky I get a lot of smoke on the nose, and when I take my first couple sips I definitely taste the smoke. After that however, I stop tasting the smoke almost completely. Am I doing something wrong in how I am drinking? Or am I just getting used to the flavor quickly. I would love to prolong the smoky flavor, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Hey guys Love your channel, I live less than 10 minutes away from Toms Foolery Distillery. I actually have never tried this bourbon but just picked up a bottle of the 100 Proof Bonded bourbon today.
I've said this before, but in case someone newer finds it useful: My favorite Armagnac uses a hard wax seal. The best way I've found to deal with it is to take a waiter's corkscrew with a curved blade, and dig the point of the blade into the wax where the cork meets the bottle. Once I'm through, I can run the point all the way around that seam and I have the bottle open in a few seconds. The only thing you need to be careful of is that wax flakes will fly everywhere, so do it over the trash or in the sink. You also need to be careful about wax dust getting into the bottle the first time you remove the cork. An alternative method I've seen is to get a coffee mug, fill it with hot water, invert the bottle, and dip the seal into the water for a minute or so. This will soften the wax so you can just pull off the cork. Maybe you get better at this with practice, but when I tried that I found the wax tended to pull apart into "strings" that were annoying to deal with.
I had a rather large piece of wax fall into a bottle of Busnel Calvadoes recently. Black bottle so I can't see it in there. It hasn't poured out yet. Hopefully it won't effect the flavour!
If you're looking to do color coding, it wouldn't be hard to use those little color coding label circles. About a half inch in diameter, and easy to spot. I've even seen them used on bottles I've ordered from outside of the US to cover tax stamps (I suspect).
Wow. Some crazy connections for me in this video! My roommate’s (Columbus native) dad introduced me to Watershed while I was in Columbus a few months ago. It was one of my favorite bourbons I had tried. Now, I sit here in my childhood home in FORT WAYNE watching this video! I had no idea you were from the Fort!
Have been into superhot peppers and sauce for a while. Your analogy of jumping into the deep in with iodine makes sense. After having completely wrecked myself on something in the >500,000 scoville range, going back to anything milder unlocks a less violent experience, and I get all the subtle notes I missed previously. Maybe ol Boy needs a bottle of Springbank.
I got the hard applejack from tom's foolery, its pretty good. 90 proof and barrel aged, as far as I can tell its just made from apples. Not the artificially flavored types made frim vodka.
Just picked up a bottle of the Watershed finished bourbon you reviewed. I liked it!! Now that I know Tom's Foolery is an Ohio product, I'm picking that up today! Thanks for the honest and great review!
Hey Guys, wondering if you will review any Tullibardine. They have a budget whisky "Sovereign" that I am curious about. It doesn't seem like you or Ralfy have reviewed their whiskys. Are their whiskys just generally not well regarded?
I had this question on the Yamazaki review but it seems better to get answers on a relatively newer video, so here it goes again "Have a quick question, I am a relatively new whiskey drinker, absolutely love the channel, great job. I enjoy Yamazaki 12 a lot but it has been really hard finding it these days (gets sold out before I even get to the store most times), do you have any recommendations for similar whiskeys?"
Hey guys, new fan to the channel.. you guys are awesome!! Have looked all over UA-cam and haven't seen anyone review the Bunnahabhain 14 Year Old 2003 - Pedro Ximenez Cask Finish. My brother and I absolutely love it!!! Would love to know what y'all think. Peace
As an Ohio boy I'd love to see you guys try the Apple Jack that Tom's Foolery started making in their beginnings. That and Western Reserve Distillers bourbon, specifically their 8yr. It's right in the sweet spot between the 4yr and the 12yr they make
From strictly a whiskey geek point of view this is one of, if not the, most interesting videos to date from you guys. The discussion of still design and how it affects flavor was very good. Also, thanks for guiding us to the Tom Foolery website. There really is a ton of information on that site and well worth the time to dig through it. If you're into that sort of thing. Which we are. Cheers bastards!
Daniel and Rex, love the channel! I’m currently working on the back episodes. I would like to get some advice. I am overdue for a whiskey night with my friend. He and his wife just had their 2nd baby. For the occasion I have new bottles of Old Pulteney 12, Auchentishan American Oak, and Suntory Toki. Could you please suggest the drinking order? Much appreciated. Drink on, my friends.
Just found your show, and I'm hooked. I ran across Tom's Foolery a few weeks back. I've always been a bourbon guy, but Tom's just had a little something different. After watching a few of your episodes I've expanded into Scotch and Irish mostly from your "Whiskeys or Beginners" video, and couldn't agree more. Tom's was a gateway into these other options. Love the show!
I NEED TO KNOW IF MY BLEND IS WORTH ANYTHING. I personally love it so it doesn't matter much, but I want to see what some experts have to say. It is 2 parts Balvenie Caribbean Cask 1 part Johnnie Walker Black. I get mango and vanilla cream up front, light smoke throughout with no peat, orange rind and cinnamon, finishing with a toffee and butter that lingers quite a while. Appease me.
for people that rewatch episodes... I fall asleep with y'all playing. so there are so many eps that are marked as watched, but not really. I help boost your view counts
Am I going to have to buy you guys a bottle of JW Black for you to do a review on one of--if not THE--most popular scotch in the world? Twice now in your videos you state you don't have it. Just the Double Black. I'm totally willing to do this, just say so.
So I have found that my pallet has drastically changed based on the whiskeys I have tried. A few months ago I started my whiskey journey with cheap Glen Moray. I hated it my first night. After 2 nights of trying it again I started getting completely new flavors that I enjoyed. I then bought some Highland Park Viking honor. And I couldn't handle the oily taste I got out of it. I tried and tried again still couldn't get past it. Then I decided I wanted to go toward Islay and bought Laphroig 10. It tasted like a salty Band-Aid to me(not pleasant) But when I went back to the Highland Park it had completely changed to something I really dig.
So happy they finally got a bottle of Watershed to review. Been meaning to send one myself, but another Magnificent Bastard beat me to it. Stumbled into it myself while visiting Ohio last year and it quickly became my go to, everyday Bourbon. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
are there any whiskeys incorporating sorghum in the mash? Knowing the depth and complexity of sorghum syrup, I think that'd be a truly interesting and unique incorporation into a mash bill.
We tried one called James FC Hyde, but there's issues with that being called whiskey: thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-styles/american-whiskey/sorghum-whiskey-friend-foe/
I requested Tom’s Foolery a little while back, I’m glad to see somebody send in a bottle as I’m from the area. Tom’s Foolery uses the old Jim Beam stills which I thought that was a interesting thing about them that was not mentioned in your video!!
Just opened Tom'e Foolery bottle #88 from Barrel #167, 100 proof Bonded , caramel, vanilla, slight hint of sweet licorice, nose has a note of kale/mint. It is an amazingly fresh tasting bourbon, the distillery is located about 20 miles from where I am. I've been ogling this stuff for the last little bit, bought this bottle only because of your review. Thanks.
Started watching your channel a few weeks ago and it has been very helpful for my whiskey journey. My friends and I went out to a place called the whiskey bank and I was able to tell them what whiskey/whisky they may like. And in true mooch fashion I of course got to try each of theirs.
I’m from Ohio and I actually saw and bought tom foolery once just to represent. And even though I’m a bourbon fan, I hated this. Like I dumped it out. This was years ago and before I got big into whiskey, so maybe it just wasn’t my thing at the time, but I remember hating it.
And here I was, just about to send you guys these EXACT two bourbons. Welp, guess I'll have to send you the Bottled in Bond version of Tom's Foolery. The distillery is about 20 minutes away from me. Awesome video guys, keep it up. Cheers!
O-H! I got a strong gingerbread flavor from Watershed. So much so I couldn't taste much else but slight spiciness and oakiness. Not to say it's a bad thing. I definitely enjoyed it. Not bad at all from a distillery that's only been around a few years.
For bungling through its fun and full of info. I was talking to my mom about Glenmorangie. It’s her friends favorite as they were able to tour Scotland. Afterward I watched your episode on the little bottles and shared it to them. I talk about alcohol all day at work and whiskey is always my favorite to explore. I suggest your channel every chance I get. Keep happy keep healthy and keep a full glass of whiskey!!
"Quit playing with the fiddly bits" 😂. Loving the videos, has anyone experimented with infusing their whisk(e)ys, like pouring some into a bottle with fruit/veg to take on some flavour. I know many scotch whiskys go well in a rhubarb crumble so just an idea for taste tests
Piggybacking on your comment on the use of spelt as a grain, have you guys tasted and/or done a review of Corsair's Quinoa Whiskey? I've now seen it twice at my new (to me) local store.
I agree with Rex, maybe I just can't taste it (no, that's not it) but any smoke in Macallan 12 is so faint it's hardly even there. Chivas tastes like a campfire in comparison, I can't think of a friendlier Scotch than Mac 12.
Why did you guys put the Writers Tears back in the Irish section? The little things that eat away at people are always the most fun to keep alive and well
>__> are their any projects in mind for the ancient grains in whisky purposes? I know Corsair kind of makes their weird one shots, but some of them feel like they are shooting in the dark. Oats might work well in a bourbon. Amaranth May work with a single malt. Fargo may work with Rye.
Can you please review the Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask? I tried it with a friend and liked it for what it is, but felt like it also could have been so much more. Thanks, keep up the good work!
Spoon I got a kind of bananas foster note on the nose that I really liked. I just would have expected it to be really spicy given the finish but it was just candy the whole way through. I don't know if I'll get it again but km glad I tried it.
Hey guys. I've been watching the channel for a while now, and being a bartender in Ann Arbor Michigan and a whiskey lover, I've found the videos both extremely helpful and entertaining. So much so that myself and some other bartender friends, all of whom have expertise in different aspects of bartending, are considering putting together our own channel exhibiting all sorts of different aspects of the modern bar experience, showcasing whiskeys, talking about cocktails and how to gateway into craft beers, etc. Luckily, one of the bars a few of us work at is willing to let us use their space and spirits to record videos, and they are considering allowing us to partake in the whiskeys and other beverages for free if we mention in the videos where we are recording the videos, turning this into an amazing mooching experience. My question is what advice can you give for getting a channel like this off the ground? What should we avoid and what should we focus on? Thanks!
Definitely do it! that sounds awesome. The number one thing I would say would be this. No matter what you do and what you talk about, post every single freaking day. It's far superior to become a part of someone's daily routine than it is to put out perfect videos. Perfect is the enemy of good enough for right now.
Damm I had a bottle to send in GLAD you got in first But my bottle is finished in a apple brandy barrel guess I will have to drink it myself By the way GREAT review
If you are looking to try more Ohio Whiskey you should try Middle West Spirits. They actually have a number of great whiskies. Here is their website: middlewestspirits.com/ If you are interested in something and cannot find it, let me know and I will send a bottle.
Born and raised in Ohio. I wanted to like that Watershed so bad. It was sooo bad. I tried it in Columbus after 2 drams of good bourbon. It was unique and had intrigued me at that point. Tasted like a fresh oaked corn likker if that makes sence. The bottle I bought for home had that same taste but it was very off putting. I'm afraid to try it again..
They revamped their bourbon fixtures in their lineup. The new stuff is a blend of their 3 grain mash bill and the 6 year apple brandy finish. The other is a bottled in bond. Their both very solid. The standard is very friendly while the bond is more complex and for your die hard whiskey lovers. They also have a number of outstanding single barrels.
'Done with that.' -- D, are you upset at the prospect of going through your whisky organization process? Keep in mind that every video might be someone's first video, and also, you picked the comment.
Sometime in the future, I'd love to hear which whisk(e)ys the two you drink the most often. What is your house always stocked with and what do you go to most often each evening?
Hey guys.

the other vids a just magnificent. just can't stop coming back to rexweek! we really need a rexmonth!!!! :D
"Cloyingly sweet"? Sommelier status restored.
Tom's Foolery sounds fantastic.
Thanks!
You're acclimating quickly. That's totally normal!
Thanks!
Watershed's Batch 70 is great, but I hear the previous batch is even more lively...
2:20 when i think Daniel started to half chub... 2:35 when i realized he was actually at full mast with his nerdgasm close by
Rex and Daniel are my best friends. Daniel and Rex are my only friends. So glad I met their channel so I no longer have to drink alone anymore
I’m going to Japan in August for my honeymoon. What distillery’s must I try to visit?
Hey guys
Love your channel, I live less than 10 minutes away from Toms Foolery Distillery. I actually have never tried this bourbon but just picked up a bottle of the 100 Proof Bonded bourbon today.

It doesn't, in my experience. You just don't want to get chunks when you're expecting a nice, smooth sip of spirit.
What's the difference between a full cask of whisky, and a Zippo? One is really heavy. The other is a little lighter.
If you're looking to do color coding, it wouldn't be hard to use those little color coding label circles. About a half inch in diameter, and easy to spot. I've even seen them used on bottles I've ordered from outside of the US to cover tax stamps (I suspect).

The bottle of Tom's Foolery I have is very close to a middle split between bourbon and Irish whiskey..and watershed is no longer using spelt.
Try chivas regal extra !!!

Try the bourbon from Red Eagle Distillery!
Daniel just had a nerdgasm over a website . I love it .
Why was the German farmer so angry at the thieves? They only left him with einkorn.
Ohio Represent!!!
Love the channel guys, have you ever had Bladnoch Adela 15, just got some as a gift, and It's been the best thing I've tried yet
Please give us a quick camera shot of the shelves when they're finished. We need to see your collection in all its glory!
"they're not tomfooling around"
Always good.
They probably are that unique because they started mainly making applejack
As a dude from Cleveland, I haven't heard of Tom's foolery, but I find myself quite proud. Will probably get some this weekend. Cleveland Rocks!
Was Chagrin Falls tho' I think they moved a litle farther into Geauga country
Love the review! You guys are fun and informative! Plus great notes on the Tom's Foolery!
Peace
I just snagged a bottle! It's on the upcoming list at some point.
Spelt is a type of wheat
yes! very cool
What whiskeys do you think should be in every person's collection?
As an Ohio boy I'd love to see you guys try the Apple Jack that Tom's Foolery started making in their beginnings. That and Western Reserve Distillers bourbon, specifically their 8yr. It's right in the sweet spot between the 4yr and the 12yr they make

traffic light stickers on the top of the bottles green = good, yellow = alright, red = shit
Daniel: “I’m no farmer, Rex...”
Me: “...I just play one on TV.”
Spelled is still cultivated wheat, but it was left behind, get wild again and re-discovered as "wild" wheat ... cheers, keep up great stuff
Just found your show, and I'm hooked. I ran across Tom's Foolery a few weeks back. I've always been a bourbon guy, but Tom's just had a little something different.
Appease me.
Andy Rosado that sounds delicious!!
My newest live is Ledaig 10 50:50 with Peat Monster, it's smoke start to finish but sweet thru the middle
for people that rewatch episodes...
Bring it on baby
I'm on it!

Daniel I grew up in Fort wayne and now live in columbus. me and my friend went to watershed last night
Awesome!
So happy they finally got a bottle of Watershed to review. Been meaning to send one myself, but another Magnificent Bastard beat me to it. Stumbled into it myself while visiting Ohio last year and it quickly became my go to, everyday Bourbon. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

We tried one called James FC Hyde, but there's issues with that being called whiskey:
thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-styles/american-whiskey/sorghum-whiskey-friend-foe/
okay, so they're going the rum route with syrup instead of using the grain itself. Disappointingly not whiskey, but still interesting
I requested Tom’s Foolery a little while back, I’m glad to see somebody send in a bottle as I’m from the area. Tom’s Foolery uses the old Jim Beam stills which I thought that was a interesting thing about them that was not mentioned in your video!!
I cant find a review for laphroig 10, does one exist? If not, why not?
ua-cam.com/video/rR1oGKMcnvQ/v-deo.html adn a few others go over it, but youre right, there isnt one that features it.
This video put a smile on my clevelander face lol

Hay Rex i have a question for you. What's round on both ends and high in the middle? Give up? Its
O HI O lol. Dad joke bomb! lol
Toms Foolery makes a really good Apple Jack
I’m from Ohio and I actually saw and bought tom foolery once just to represent. And even though I’m a bourbon fan, I hated this. Like I dumped it out. This was years ago and before I got big into whiskey, so maybe it just wasn’t my thing at the time, but I remember hating it.
And here I was, just about to send you guys these EXACT two bourbons. Welp, guess I'll have to send you the Bottled in Bond version of Tom's Foolery. The distillery is about 20 minutes away from me.
Awesome video guys, keep it up.
Cheers!
How's Tom's Foolery been lately? It's been 3 years since this video so I'm curious
Live about 40 minutes from the foolery 👍
It's in Burton not so much cleveland
Craft distillery an hours drive north you say. Hmmmm, weekend plans? I think I now have some
O-H!
I got a strong gingerbread flavor from Watershed. So much so I couldn't taste much else but slight spiciness and oakiness. Not to say it's a bad thing. I definitely enjoyed it. Not bad at all from a distillery that's only been around a few years.

Rex has perfected the face after saying something like 3:10.
I could pick one out every video.
What barrel number on your bottle guys?
Tom's Foolery: barrel 260
Watershed, Batch 70
Tom Foolery:
Corn Yellow Dent Troy Farms 58% 490
Rye Winter Rye Organic Twin Parks 17% 150
Barley Malt 6 Row Great Western Malting Co 25% 210
seeing your deanston bottles on the shelf made me go to the distillery sooner.
My heart fluttered a little when you said Canada top corner. Being a huge hockey fan, these words are magical.
Home town! OH!
Just waiting for someone to do a gigantic comparison chart for all the episodes you have done... I would do it, but I have a life!
Piggybacking on your comment on the use of spelt as a grain, have you guys tasted and/or done a review of Corsair's Quinoa Whiskey? I've now seen it twice at my new (to me) local store.
Not yet!
I agree with Rex, maybe I just can't taste it (no, that's not it) but any smoke in Macallan 12 is so faint it's hardly even there. Chivas tastes like a campfire in comparison, I can't think of a friendlier Scotch than Mac 12.
That Tom's Foolery sounds like my kind of whiskey.
I don't believe Daniel can open a whisky easily. I guess he'll have to prove it by reviewing that Cedar Ridge in the back.
Why did you guys put the Writers Tears back in the Irish section? The little things that eat away at people are always the most fun to keep alive and well
does a quinoa whiskey exist?
It does! I think Corsair is doing one.
ua-cam.com/video/QFyWDPnaSTw/v-deo.html already been done! Thought this would help
>__> are their any projects in mind for the ancient grains in whisky purposes? I know Corsair kind of makes their weird one shots, but some of them feel like they are shooting in the dark.
Oats might work well in a bourbon. Amaranth May work with a single malt. Fargo may work with Rye.
OH-IO
Congratulations on the 75k.
Can you please review the Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask? I tried it with a friend and liked it for what it is, but felt like it also could have been so much more. Thanks, keep up the good work!
Spoon it was the right amount of sweet but the spice didn't show up as much as I was expecting with the rum finish.
Spoon I typically don't drink rum but if I do I usually go for something like kraken or sailor Jerry with coke and a lime twist
Spoon I got a kind of bananas foster note on the nose that I really liked. I just would have expected it to be really spicy given the finish but it was just candy the whole way through. I don't know if I'll get it again but km glad I tried it.
Spoon I definitely enjoyed it. Haven't done a full writeup yet but if it were less expensive I'd keep it around for a dessert-ey option.
Spoon how much is it where you are? I found it for $70 USD at Costco
I watch your show from Fort Wayne, IN!!! way to mention the Fort!!
Spreadsheets!
Also, why not just make a Whiskey Storage Facility for all your unopened bottles, with an accompanying spreadsheet?
Thanks guys, that helps a lot. I'll let you know how it goes!
Damm I had a bottle to send in GLAD you got in first But my bottle is finished in a apple brandy barrel guess I will have to drink it myself
By the way GREAT review
If you are looking to try more Ohio Whiskey you should try Middle West Spirits. They actually have a number of great whiskies. Here is their website: middlewestspirits.com/ If you are interested in something and cannot find it, let me know and I will send a bottle.
Daniel is describing the taste of diabetes
Love the channel guys. And just got the whiskey vault glass. Love it
Awesome! Glad you dig it!
Daniel totally had a nerdgasm talking about the website and barrel spreadsheet.
Watershed has an apple brandy and then a whiskey aged in those apple brandy barrels. If you can find both are fantastic.
Have i had too many or is the camera focused on the shelves in the background?
You may have but you're still correct.
Jameson 12 year distillery reserve.
Whistlepig trifecta
'Done with that.' -- D, are you upset at the prospect of going through your whisky organization process? Keep in mind that every video might be someone's first video, and also, you picked the comment.
I love how small your Bourbon section is in the vault. That's how it should be in beverage shops. Mostly scotch, and then a little of everything else.
i would re watch if i bought it maybe...
Ohio! Yeah!!
Sometime in the future, I'd love to hear which whisk(e)ys the two you drink the most often. What is your house always stocked with and what do you go to most often each evening?
Daniel love those too...
Daniel, 10:27. Please watch 1:15
Watching Rex play with that bottle made me feel sorry for his wife.
That Ledaig bottle still needs to be finished. Bottle down gents... bottle down
It's also a shelf below where it should be based on Daniels explanation of bottle organization
In good time. Remember they shoot multiple videos at the same time
