Michael Carnevale Yes, I believe he did. if you watch closely at Plainview face while he is talking to HW at the train, a tear drop falls off of his face. While walking away from the leaving train, you can clearly see his face and it is all telling. We can tell that he was a rather compassionate father given the time period. it was very common for parents to distance themselves from their kids, and it was very normal to send their disabled kids to school away from them. A single man taking care or a child was VERY strange, and it was an incredible undertaking.

Quentin Tarantino said the Paul Dano felt like the only exception in this otherwise perfect movie was paul danos performance not being able to hold candle to Daniel Day Lewis and im inclined to agree. If Eli were supposed to come of as a worthy adversary to Daniel in this scene i would say he falls short.

I just love that In this scene Daniel doesn't give a shit about being there and you can see the aggression in his eyes towards Eli. And that moment when Eli pisses him off to his limit he shouts so it can be over and you can see that Daniel feels humiliated. And I love that at the end of the film when he humiliates Eli by getting Eli to say "I am a false prophet and God is a superstition" for payback of this humiliation. Damn this film is amazing PTA is a modern Kubrick.

I thought Tommy Lee Jones was a lock for best actor 2007 until I saw this movie and this scene made me realize that no one else could even come close, and if DDL wanted to win an Oscar he could probably do it on a whim. Look at his facial expressions, the guilt/frustration/rage all blend together, as if DDL was actually dealing with these things himself in real time.
You can really see hints of the riddler in Eli. I thought of this movie while watching Batman, it was an alright movie but know where near as good as this masterpiece.

His performance in Lincoln is sensational but I still maintain that Daniel Plainview is his greatest character performance ever...Day-Lewis is just an extraordinarily gifted actor and I highly doubt that we'll ever see anyone better, at least in out lifetime.
