I love the way the milkshake scene mirrors this one, that was Daniels revenge. Making Eli renounce his faith was as demeaning for him as this absurd baptism was for Daniel.

Michael Carnevale Yes, I believe he did. if you watch closely at Plainview face while he is talking to HW at the train, a tear drop falls off of his face. While walking away from the leaving train, you can clearly see his face and it is all telling. We can tell that he was a rather compassionate father given the time period. it was very common for parents to distance themselves from their kids, and it was very normal to send their disabled kids to school away from them. A single man taking care or a child was VERY strange, and it was an incredible undertaking.

Tristan Tobey everyone needs to stop conparing him to anyone, there has never been an actor with his range. De niro is great but plays basically the same characters all the time. This man completely morphs into any character possible and never has a dull moment or does any cheesy hollywood movies. Put some respect on his name please.

I thought Tommy Lee Jones was a lock for best actor 2007 until I saw this movie and this scene made me realize that no one else could even come close, and if DDL wanted to win an Oscar he could probably do it on a whim. Look at his facial expressions, the guilt/frustration/rage all blend together, as if DDL was actually dealing with these things himself in real time.

This is my favourite scene in the film and one of my favourite scenes of all time because even this depraved, selfish and frankly horrible man we see is still capable of feeling- he wants a friend, a partner and he feels guilty for his son. There is hope even in the worst of us.

well yeah he is overall- he thinks it'll be a walkover but he actually finds it emotionally moving- we see his guilt and regret is genuine because in the very next scene he brings his son home from the school he sent him to

You need to play this scene until Mary Sunday walks up behind him and hugs him. It shows that Daniel is capable of caring for people. And he cares for H.W and Mary Sunday, because of their innocence. They are not yet corrupted by the ills of the world.
