About the only thing bad about Daniel Day Lewis's performance is that it's so captivating that most people don't realize the incredible performance by Paul Dano, should have at least been nominated for best supporting actor.
Disagree. Dano is passable & Lewis eats him alive. The film is unbalanced by it which lessens the narrative: it's the 1 major flaw in the film. He's so outclassed it was distracting to me. When I was watching it, especially this scene, I was thinking this character should of been played by Micheal Pitt. If you had a truly charismatic Eli & thus a real power struggle, the film would of taken on an entirely new dimension. This scene should be Dano's: Plainview & the audience are in his world now, time for Eli to shine. If Anderson had an actor who could really play him with beguiling power he would of had some portion of the sermon showing his rhetorical ability, extending the scene by say a minute before showing Plainview. Instead he gets out of the sermon as quickly as possible. Eli has Plainview at a real disadvantage here & should extract something out of him but even on his knees getting slapped around Lewis tears him apart. Don't mean to be too hard on Dano, he's not a bad actor, he's just not great. To be fair there's very few young actors that could stand in there with Lewis' Plainview, maybe young: Crispen Glover, Oldman, Pacino. The only actor Dano's generation is Pitt, who as I understand it, was real a pain in the ass to work with & subsequently has had difficulty getting work despite early on being really sought after. Incidentally, my brother knew Pitt when he went to film school & said he's pretty nuts - hopefully he gets his act together because he's a real talent, but I digress. Back to my point: I think this is a great movie, easily my favorite Anderson picture, with the rest of the cast being outstanding & Lewis giving the performance of this century but its imbalance does bother me. Anywho, thats my ¢10. Take it for what it's worth.
Faggghaggg, both our post are several months old so not sure if you’re still there but nonetheless I’ll reply: Obviously Anderson(& virtually everyone who’s seen this movie) disagrees. Anderson carved this film around Lewis’ performance & he won(yet again in his career) worldwide acclaim for this role. As I mentioned in my initial post: If Anderson had thought Dano’s Eli was outstanding he would of shown him off in this scene because this is the one time we see him in his element, ie, preaching before the congregation. This is where Eli derives his power & importance in the community & the story. But Eli says a few lines and Anderson cuts to Lewis just sitting in the pew - which for my money(& obviously Anderson’s) is far more riveting than Dano’s attempt at preaching via his serviceable acting. In addition, as I wrote before, if he felt Dano was killing it he would of extended his sermon by at least 30 seconds to show Eli’s oratory power - Anderson is not known for skimping on the dialogue; the man likes his monologues & soliloquies - the proof of his appreciation of the performances is in the edit. I’m mean, if you don’t like Lewis you dont like him; it’s your taste, I’m not going to change your mind - but I’m sure you’re aware youre in the extreme minority on this one. Not saying you’re wrong, I personally find people raving about Edward Norton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eddie Redmayne perplexing; I find them cloyingly obvious in their acting & that surely isn’t the common opinion. As I mentioned before I don’t mean to go after Dano, he’s fine; he’s no Brando, but he’s no Orlando Bloom, either. Personally, I don’t think Dano has once approached great acting - by great I mean: Brando in Street Car, Deniro in Taxi Driver, Nicholson in 5 Easy Pieces... I put Daniel Day Lewis in that company.
I don't know about you guys but after all that spectacle, the calm and restrained "Yes I do" at the end, gets me every time - it's hilarious and represents the ridiculousness of it all!
Man. I know I'm just stating the obvious here but, he will absolutely have to go down as one of the greatest of all time. I mean the veins and emotion you can see in his face when he finally has to say something aloud that truly shames him to say as the character. You can see it all, the anger, annoyance, sadness, pain, everything. The guy is a master of this craft.
Yea, totally agree with Anto.. er, Javier Bardan being a great bad guy as well. I also, get what you're saying about watching him read a newspaper as this character all day too, haha. He does that old man mush-mouth thing and a lot of other great mannerisms akin to men of that era. Just greatness all around.
Man, you couldn't be more right. Such a classic look too. I love how it's a look where you can't tell if grandpa is drunk as a skunk or just been worked too hard his whole life. haha
+FlyBoyBigBlue To be honest that seems like something all actors could do - the big acting. Its the subtleties that make someone great, not needing to wave a flag at the audience telling them everything they are feeling. That's not to say this isn't a powerful scene, I just think there are other things to think about with his performance in this movie.
I think it is terrifying because in addition to the music used, and the way the story is set, it is about the discovery of a sea of oil. A substance that has caused catastrophic havoc on the planet and its way of life. This is added to what man is capable of when he has with him the extreme conviction of avarice, opportunity, wealth, which leads him to a blind path of self-destruction. And the ironic end shows that all this leads us to nothing but solitude, leisure, boredom, to nothing. It is the reflection of what blind capitalism leads to the human being. So, yeah, it's even disturbing.
i love this movie, he's spot on with Eli and his false Proficies just as most of these healing idiot are. Christ himself only did 33. look it up.! and being wealthy is ok,he worked for it...
2:50 - " Give me the blood, Eli, let me get out of here ...Give me the blood, LORD, and let me get away ! " Funny. Like he had a moment of honesty and he just showed that he doesn't give a damn about the whole thing, just let it be over once :-))
I remember watching Paul Dano in Little Miss Sunshine and thinking he was fantastic, and really hoping he'd gone on to have the career he deserved despite not looking like a 'Hollywood Hunk.' He's such a good actor! Anyone would be intimidated by Daniel Day Lewis' acting methods but I really think Dano is on par with him in this film.
the scene is not complete without the end, showing the reaction of the crowd, mainly the females, from child to old woman....amazing how anderson did that, this is so touching and says so much with just a few short little gestures....
It's not shown in this clip but I've always wondered what Daniel said to Eli directly after this when he stands up and goes and shakes Eli's hand. He says something and looking at Eli's face, if I'm not mistaken, seems mortified. And them there's the last scene of the film when Daniel is screaming “I TOLD YOU I WOULD EAT YOU!”
Perhaps what he whispers to him is the the title of the movie? After all the talk of blood and salvation, perhaps Plainview says, "There will be blood" for being brought so low and made to confess about his son in front of the whole town. Remember, Plainview threatened to cut a man's throat for merely making a suggestion about his son earlier in the movie. The funny thing is, after Eli bests him for his own political, monetary, and ideological gains in Little Boston, you see Plainview smiling after the confession because he knows he is going to win out in this rivalry in the long run. He's going to be a multi- millionaire, and even if Eli does well as his church grows in reputation, he'll never surpass or slow him down again. Plainview follows through on his promise at the end of the movie as well...
+Andrew Robinson I don't think that's why he threatened to cut his throat. Daniel doesn't give a damn about his son's well-being, that's obvious. I think that was because the guy challenged his ego, his sense of superiority that he depends on in his loneliness, by saying "you've done well but let us take it from here". Daniel doesn't respond well to insult, and every time some one threatens his ego, something inside him snaps, like when his fake brother treats him like a loser on the beach. I think he is actually desperate for a human connection or a friend, of which he really has none, something he can't admit to himself, that loneliness is what the fake brother cons him with, and the idea of HIM being had by someone else is such a threat to his ego that he kills him. The comment about his son may have had an effect, but I think thats only because he's suggesting Daniel is a bad father (ego), the real reason he snapped there is because he was being disrespected and made to feel like all the townspeople he'd duped in the past. He uses his sense of power and superiority as a crutch, because he has no love or friendship in his life and suffers his internal pain in silence. So every time that is challenged, the emotional/psychological storm brewing inside him comes to the surface in its absence
The confidence of Paul Dano to slap an Academy Award winning actor without hesitation and so accurately just is something unto its own. I realize there are takes, but you have to make it look appropriate.

Damn you cut off one of the best parts where he shakes Eli's hand at the end and, whatever he says to him, makes Eli turn white
Notice how Sunday never mentions that he was the victim of Plainview's backsliding...
Paul Dano was the glue of this movie, great petformance
This would work as brilliant short
THERES A PIPELINE
He gets him back for that, doesn't he? ;)
Marcus Mueller Yip ! Well he killed the wee fucked lol .
"Yes I do."
Bring on the pipeline. Thank you 2007
