@@catchbooker7257 Gangs of New York and Lincoln. Just commercial Oscar baity movies especially the latter. Former was a really mediocre movie so it didn't work out but it was obviously made for that reason. While I would agree that DDL was great in those regardless, Gary Oldman killed it in the Dark Knight movies as well be it commercial or art. His acting was superb and he nailed the role to the point that some critics thought that he should have been nominated at Oscars for The Dark Knight for supporting actor. So I don't know how Oldman doing The Dark Knight movies place him below DDL when they are some of the greatest trilogies if not the greatest trilogy to be ever made.

I was irish super heavyweight boxing champion at the time when Daniel trained at Crumlin boxing club, for the film: The Boxer. He had two couch's guiding him, Barry McGuigan and my own couch Phil Sutciff (the Chairman of Crumlin ABC). Incidentally it's the same boxing club McGregor trained in as a boy... Anyways Daniel trained twice a day and become very good on the pads and he loved skipping! He did spar often enough with the lighter lads, but only body shots. I remember him being extremly focused and it was obvious he absorbed everything like a sponge. However, (I'm smiling to myself now, thinking back) it was kind of off-putting the way he'd stare at us while we were hitting the heavy bag or zipping away on the speed ball! But he was always pleasant and engaging and most importantly without any of that megastar ego, bullshit. He said something along the lines about "boxing is a level playing field and it doesn't matter who you are, climbing through those ropes you've got to earn respect of your opponent the hard way!" It's no wonder he's so revered!

A lot of Lincoln's dialog in the movie came directly from the massive biography on Abraham Lincoln by John Nicolay and John Hay. Nicolay and Hay were long time private secretaries to Lincoln who had been with him for many years of Lincoln's career, even before his presidency. In the movie "Lincoln", Hay was played by Joseph Cross and Nicolay was played by Jeremy Strong. They do not have many speaking parts in the movie but in nearly every scene with Lincoln meeting with his cabinet they can be seen in the background, listening and observing.
Yes, it is impossible to know precisely what Lincoln said word for word, but much of it was reconstructed based on that biography. And there were perhaps no two better people to write a bio on Lincoln than his longtime aides and secretaries John Hay and John Nicolay. In fact, just about every single biography ever written on Lincoln is pulling information from Nicolay and Hay's books.

I truly believe Gangs of New York is one of the the best films of all time. Daniel Day Lewis truly created a character that you felt uncomfortable and fearful watching. And DiCaprio - despite him getting shat on for being outshined by Lewis - really was outstanding as well, because his acting is what made Bill the Butcher feel so eerily terrifying. You could just feel his fearful hate of Bill the Butcher; he created a character most of us can relate to - feeling as though he must avenge his Father, yet also knowing he’s up against a bad mf. Then the way the director subtly implied that Bill the Butcher was a step ahead of Leo… so we were always unsure if Leo was going to succeed or not. Just a fantastic movie, and that closing scene was an all time epic.

Daniel Day Lewis is definitely one of the best actors in recent history. Most of the really good ones seem to be British. Anthony Hopkins is probably my favorite, although he's getting pretty old. But I can't think of any actor currently working that is better. He can do such a wide variety of character types and that shows the true talent he possesses.

Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Oldman are the greatest modern day movie actors. There are some other great actors out there as well but not quite on that level.
People like Bale, Jackman, McConaughey and Pitt are all fantastic intense actors but not quite at that level. Jared Leto
and Tom Hardy are fantastic intense movie actors but not quite at the level of Day Lewis and Oldman.
The film roles simply are not there anymore for the younger actors to get a chance. Large budget action comic movies have taken over because the corporates find that easy money.

Devin Michael Roberts I have to agree. Schindler's List was Slow, overhyped, inaccurate and Liam Neeson is a fair actor but totally miscast. And he's certainly nowhere near DDL. Neeson is a slightly cheesy "movie star." DD Lewis is an actor and a creator of characters in his own mind.

Not all films are action movies and it’s good to have slow pacing to build, scenarios, characters and atmosphere. You don’t have to rush the plot all the the time.
