    Installed this today, part # 87998. Ok I shouted some choice words at times. I soaked the gasket for 10 minutes in hot water and applied olive oil to top and bottom surfaces. Still couldn't apply enough force to set it fully. Tried using a tennis ball, no bueno, only could turn slightly. Tried about 4 times and failed.
    Took a break and read someone suggested doing it in increments and waiting (maybe 30 min.) so that the gasket could slowly compress. Did this 2 times, each time was able to turn it about 1/4" or so. On the third time in this incremental attempt, I donned a leather work glove on my weak side hand to press down on the bottom part towards the tank bottom and used my strong side hand to turn it. Surprisingly it turned into final position relatively easy. I checked to ensure the 3 tabs were against the underside of the lip of the tank and holding it in place.
    Try this incremental approach and be patient, it worked for me. Not sure if the olive oil or hot water soak worked but if all else fails use it.

    Great video! The olive oil was very helpful.
    Okay if you’re still struggling to compress the gasket enough (which we were) here was our solution. We wrapped the gasket in a rag (so it’s surface wouldn’t be scratched) then placed it between two blocks of wood. We compressed it, tightly, in a vice and left it over night. That plus the oil was the key.

    THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH! you are my favorite person on earth today! I cannot express how much I appreciate that you took the time to make this video for all of us. ps...contrary to what a few others are commenting, I’d like to mention that I am so pleased that you did not do this in the actual toilet tank as I would not have been able to see clearly in such a confined space. Taking the time to make this cardboard cut out set up made it extremely clear. Thank you!

    You are a genius and to be highly commended for your excellent, succinct video. The old gasket was obviously deteriorating. I had never before worked on a one-piece toilet and had no idea what to do. I watched the video twice and removed the old flush valve by sticking a finger into the gasket and prying it out, then twisted the now very loose valve to remove it. I clicked on the link to your Amazon affiliate, ordered the new part, and received it in 2 days with Prime. I watched your video again, spread fresh extra virgin olive oil on both sides of the gasket, and installed the new valve in less than 10 seconds into the tank which I had previously cleaned and let dry. It did not leak overnight after testing with a tank full of water. Some comments indicate difficulty with installation, but I see no reason why a person with normal arm strength and non-arthritic hands could not perform this job on a similar (Santa Rosa) toilet. Thanks again for your excellent service to the DIY community.

    As can be confirmed by all the difficulty with this part expressed in these posts, the design of this flush valve is sadly lacking in anything but frustration. Out of the box, it is almost impossible to install. After more than a few four letter words, I did succeed and would like to share my tips. Some form of lubrication of all surfaces of the gasket and between it and the plastic valve and hole in the toilet really helps. I used soap, but before also soaked the gasket in hot water for about five minutes to soften it. Finally, I used a 1” X 2” wood block with one end tapered to fit inside the hole of the valve to apply sufficient pressure while turning it at the same time. Good luck to all.

    I just replaced mine. Man is it tight to get in. The original the plumber installed with I re-did the bathroom. I found out the other day the plastic clips were missing in two of the three spots. I can only guess the plumber broke them putting it in and never told his boss. It did last for 23 years until it started leaking recently.
    The plumbing supply was the only place that had the part. 21.05 was the total cost. No plumber bill, so I got off cheap.
    The wife is very happy that she doesn't have to go upstairs.

    • @jgebis999
      @jgebis999  6 років тому

      limestonelizard - are you having trouble removing the old one, or installing the new one? In either case, you might have better luck if you can get another person to push down (perhaps using something like the handle of a hammer or something), while you rotate. If it's the old one giving you trouble, you might be able to cut it away. I've heard people say that putting the new gasket in the freezer for a few hours will shrink it and make it easier to install, but I've never tried that.

    • @limestonelizard
      @limestonelizard 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply! I'm removing an existing gasket, but I can't seem to turn the flush valve assembly by hand. Does it matter if I turn it clockwise or counterclockwise? Thanks I'll try the hammer handle pushing while turning. If not I might try cutting away the old gasket and hope the new one goes in easier.

    • @jgebis999
      @jgebis999  6 років тому

      I don't think it matters which direction you rotate.
      When I swapped out mine, it ended up being quite a bit easier to install the new one than take out the old one (of course, with olive oil applied to the top and bottom of the gasket). Good luck!

    This is a great video and helpful; however, no matter how carefully I follow the directions, I cannot push hard enough on the valve to compress the seal enough to get the locking mechanism (3 prongs) to the other side of the porcelain base. The base is so thick that the gasket needs to be compressed to about half of its normal thickness for the prongs to clear so that they can be rotated. I've tried using a hammer and a wooden block pressed by my shoulder with as much weight as I can muster, and it's just not enough. The old gasket appeared "squished" out the sides. I cannot figure how anyone can muster the force in that confined space. (And of course the plastic is slippery from the olive oil.) If anyone has come up with a way to soften the gasket, I'd appreciate any tips.

    While olive oil helped, I still had trouble as I could not push hard enough as it is awkward to fit your hands in the tank and push with just your fingers. HOWEVER, when I put a rubber sanding block over the fitting I was able to apply a lot more pressure with the heel of my palm, then the greased fitting rotated easily. A square wooden block would likely work as well to give you a flat surface to push on while spreading the force evenly over the fitting. Thanks for the video - I had no idea how to do this beforehand.

    Thank you, the part number was right. But wondering why you didn't you use a toilet to install it. I don't want to be negative, but you replicated turning it the wrong way to tighten. It tightens counter clockwise. Also the best way to seal this is by making sure the water is very low in the tank (which I use a big sponge), and letting the porcelain seat dry. You can do this by using a hair dryer. Then, put a thick bead of silicone around the hole on porcelain instead of olive oil. I highly recommend doing a dry fit before applying silicone and remember to turn counter clockwise to tighten. Silicone will also act as a lubricant and insure the rubber gasket is sealed. I am not sure if the factory does this, but the customer swears that the one I removed today has never been changed and it had a silicone seal. It was very easy to scrape off silicone with a sharp putty knife. With this nice video and my experience, I hope that our collaboration will help all. No offense to JB

    The olive oil was the only good tip here. I had tried pool/spa lube and silicone spray, but neither worked. However, it's much easier installing it on a piece of cardboard than the toilet.
    My gasket was too thick that even two men couldn't push and rotate the flush valve, especially on a toilet in a small water closet. I had to find a way to compress the gasket to accomplish the installation. I compressed it overnight under the legs of my bedframe. That was just enough that the olive oil was the final step. Mine was installed on a Devonshire one piece and the thickness of the porcelain may also play a part in the installation.

    This one piece toilet is poorly designed by Kohler. Why would they use a plastic material when this can easily break?. I understand this material will not corrode but a better design is needed. Well, mine broke in the process of taking it apart. Now with the new part I ordered from amazon, I'm just worried it may break again. I still have not fully engage the three prongs into place. make sure you have the right seal. In my case GP83996 was the correct one as opposed to GP83888. Both will fit but the latter is thicker and requires a heck of alot of compression which was ultimately not humanly possible in my experience.

    This video is a joke, right? It's a great guide to how to install a Kohler flush valve in a piece of cardboard. But I was actually hoping to install it in a Kohler toilet. Even with a lot of olive oil applied to the gasket, it's all but impossible. Perhaps you guys at Kohler can get your hands on a Kohler toilet somewhere. Then you could make a video that shows how to install the Kohler flush valve in an actual Kohler toilet.

      Hi Scott -- This video's not from Kohler, I made it myself (I'm not associated with them) because I thought it might help out others. You're right that it's still not easy to install, but hopefully the oil makes it go from completely impossible to difficult-but-doable. I still had to press down on the flush valve / gasket extremely hard to get it installed. Initially, it was impossible to rotate into place while I was pushing down, but a little olive oil allowed it to work. Still wasn't easy, but at least I could get it done.

      The cardboard made it easier to understand how to make it work but even with the olive oil (which was the best part of the video), it was very hard to replace it on the real toilet. I actually compressed the seal slightly overnight and that plus the olive oil worked well.
