I had just ordered the seal only but I took your tip and pulled the valve out and found one of the 3 keepers was broken so I ordered the whole assembly. Don't know why the negative comments in here. I just wanted to know how to remove it, the assembly part is on me and I learned a long time ago I HATE PLUMBING ! :). Thanks
I found this on installing the valve, seems brilliant. Clamp the seal between 2 pieces of wood and place in the freezer for a few hours, remove seal apply grease and install quickly. Wait a while for the seal to thaw. Haven't tried it but sounds perfect. Will post after install.
Thanks for this tip, Johnny's Star Spangle. It worked for me. I did have to leave it in the freezer overnight. The first time I tried after a couple of hours in the freezer. The second time, clamped it down to about half it's width and left it over night. I put oil on the actual toilet rather than the ring and it worked. I was so happy. This method is really effective. I used a clip to secure the three points of the rubber band, froze it overnight, and it could be inserted into the toilet afterward. However, a bit of force is still needed. This method is quite useful for me. Thank you.
I just tried the freezing method I mentioned in my last comment. Works like a charm, easy peasy. 5 minutes for the valve. The proper chain length was a pain though as always and that's why I HATE PLUMBING ! :)
Thank you it really works. At first I tried to force it on and could see that would not work. I clamped the gasket down to about a quarter of an inch, froze it fir 3 hours. I put some olive oil on both the tank and the gasket and low an behold it slid right in. I waited a hour before filling the tank to wipe up excess oil and for the gasket to thaw. Thank you all for the tips.
Good for readers to review others comment/reply for actual hacks that work, since I also experienced brushing and blood pressure redline while attempting to compress gasket.
Alright found the comment regarding soaking the gasket! I placed the gasket in the sink submerged in water put a weight on it, so it's not floating for 1 minute squeezed out extra air and dipped it back in the water. Then put on the plastic value body. It was very much easier to compress and turn to the upright position required. Note the actual instruction state to wet the gasket, but soaking wet seems to be the tip.
Read the comments below by Janet E and Lester P. Their method did the trick. "Plumbing Pro" really should include these tips instead of getting angry when multiple viewers are having the same problems. Most of us watch these videos to learn how to accomplish a task, not on how to unpack the parts.
+Michael Lebert i was not angry with anyone. Someone else got angry because it was not demonstrated on an actual toilet. I Did not have any video footage of this install to provide. I did not mention putting olive oil on the gasket because I did not have any issues getting it installed at the time. I am sure putting olive oil is also not recommended by Kohler Co for the install. This looks really helpful, but I'd like to point out that in the video the speaker gives a different model number than that shown in the title. A couple of numbers were reversed, so now it's hard to know exactly which is the right model number. But I would go by the 84496.
Purchased the part but realized that the toilet itself does not have the notches any more. Is there something we can do for that or a new toilet is in order.
@@mjsoup29 it took many many MANY attempts and i got lots of bruising. i ended up having my brother come over and it took the two of us all of our strength as one pushed it in and the other turned. we tried so many times and it finally went in just when we were going to give up.
@@lady4548 sounds like we were having the same experience. I cut my arm while trying to press it in place and leaning on the refill valve. I eventually decided that I couldn't do it without help and got a crowbar and a towel. Using the Crowbar and gently pressing against the very bottom of the flush valve with the towel against the porcelain so it wouldn't crack it, I was able to push the valve inside the hole enough to turn it .... At first I thought I was having a delusion when it was actually turning... it was a strange and wonderful feeling after so many failed attempts. Now it's in place and I hope I never have to change it again! Seriously, this was too difficult to do for what should be a pretty simple swapping out of one part for another. Thank you for your feedback and replies!

The other thing I did was to soak the gasket squeezing it underwater releasing the air and replacing it with water. "Seemed" to make it a little squishier and a little easier to compress. I think if I ever have to replace this again, I'll replace the whole toilet with an American Standard.
The valve seems very difficult to intall on the tank wall with the new seal/gasket, any better way to do that, I am still having problems to turn and tighten the valve and made it straight the way it should.
Yes it's very difficult. If you read a couple comments down, clamping the gasket between wood and placing in the freezer is what alot of people are doing. Check it out

Whoever designed this and whoever approved the design should be fired. They have no regard for the consumers. It's a tight place to work in and you cannot put enough pressure to flatten the pretty thick and hard seal. The last person who replaced it in my toilet broke 2 of the three spokes. However, it allows water to seep out, so the tank is constantly replenishing water. Now I have to replace it. Can Kohler offer any help? I've searched Google and UA-cam (even Kohler's website) and there is no video to help you with this kind of flush valve.
How about READING and ANSWERING comments?? Like show a video of this damned thing going in!! What does one use to "squeeze" the gasket enough to turn the unit?? Nice that you show us how to open a box and then describe the parts!!
Theres no need to get grumpy with me because you are getting frustrated at yourself for not being able to install a plumbing part in your toilet. Get upset with Kohler about the design. I also dont have a home with 50 bathrooms so I can demonstrate how to install every part on every toilet made. Maybe hire a local plumber that has experience in the plumbing industry to help you with this task. Thanks for watching
This flush valve replacement kit will not work for the Kohler Rialto. Rialto opens directly down. This kit is L shaped which only fits the San Raphael. I have a Rialto and am looking right at it!
You are correct depending on the year. this valve has been in both A lot of rialto have a triangular flush valve base that twist in. The 84499 kit with a model specific fill valve is included.
My Realto K3386DA uses the L shaped flush valve. The flush valve part number is 84996 and is specified under the tank lid. I haven't seen anyone else mention it but also under the lid is the warning that in-tank cleaners may cause catastrophic damage. I can attest to this. My flush valve seal completely deteriorated.

this thing is so hard to install. it was easy to take out but man.. that seal that's supposed to go in just won't budge. totally frustrating.
i am having the same issue. VERY hard to get into the right place with the notches locking.... still trying to get it in now...

Place a light layer of olive oil on both sides of the gasket to help.
