    Jarred, with the new software what do you think of the IC-7610 now? Is it really worth having over the 7300? I heard that that on receive and transmit using SSB there pretty much the same, is this true?

    Given than a few of you feel this is a non issue rather a mere misunderstanding, I've re-titled the video to be less controversial, however, I encourage you all to read the following commentary.
    For those who think its just as simple as adding a BNC T connector it isn't. Without a buffering amplifier between the SDR Dongle you run the risk of feeding birdies and other hash into the main receiver from the SDR/Computer connection.
    In this video I Kindly answered a question a fellow Amateur asked; I do not feel it is unfair to hold a clean sheet, mid range and expensive radio to quite a high standard.
    Given the video already has 16 likes to 2 dislikes (8:1 ratio), I'd suggest their are other Amateurs out there who would have liked the option of a buffered RX Out.
    The fact is both Kenwood (TS-590SG) and Yaesu (FTDX-3000) offer this feature. It would have cost cents to add the option of using the RX Out as a pure RX Out with a buffering preamplifier.
    I understand a lot of people don't share my viewer's desire of running an outboard SDR - including myself - but I feel for Mike who ordered an SDRPlay RSP2 at the same time as his IC-7610 when it simply won't work as he desired, and the manual doesn't make this clear.
    I personally feel that a $5250 AUD radio should be held to a high standard - its 1/3rd of a brand new car here, and I also don't think that any radio deserves 100% praise just because it is new.
    If you'd like to see 100% praise for new products, my suggestion would be to check out eham.com reviews. I'm committed to journalistic integrity and covering topics that my viewers are interested in - all of them, not just the topics that everyone can agree upon.
    I don't feel this is a bad thing - it promotes discussion, and may prevent further people from spending unnecessary money.
    None of the above makes me a 'hater', just balanced in my appraisal. Remember, in University 85% is a High Distinction, and *no one* would argue that earning a HD is not a significant achievement.
    Food for though,

    As they say in the software industry, it's not a bug, it's a feature. My FTDX3000 has an RX out port that behaves as you had expected the 7610 to do, but it also gives you the ability to select ANT3 as a separate RX antenna port, in the case of using a beverage, flag, or some other low-noise RX antenna on say, 160. I would expect that you could hook a beverage to RX-IN and get your receive capability back, but then as you say you'd have to make sure you weren't overloading the RX front end. I am using a FunCube dongle right now on it for the panadapter feature, but use the IF out rather than the RF out. Just personal preference.

    • @RateMyRadio
      @RateMyRadio  6 років тому +1

      Which brings up another white elephant Bubba... the fact the FTDX-3000 actually *has* a third antenna port.
      There are lots of comments here talking about how something has always worked in the past, but with a clean sheet SDR design, I feel its reasonable to talk about how we'd LIKE to use radios moving forward.
      Kenwood and Yaesu were both smart enough to offer an RX pass thru, why is it unfair to criticise Icom for not doing so?
      Food for thought. No one is saying take away the RX Loop design, just have an option of RX Pass Thru.

    I’m not sure if this is a relevant reply? But you can also drive the sdr device using the IF output of the 7610. I do this on my ftdx5000 IF port going to the sdr-IQ. I do believe the 7610 has an IF output. Also the 5000’s RX ports work the same, you must loop it back while it’s selected. I did use this method before the IF output, but noticed that while the SDR radio was in-line it pulled back the receiver on the 5000 a bit, I guess from SDR drawing from the circuit.

    The behaviour you describe in this video is how the RX OUT/IN ports work on all radios i've seen that have them (IC-7600, IC-7610, K3, etc), and is often referred to as a 'receive loop'. The 'intended' use-case is for something like an external preamplifier or an external filter, or connecting some other RX antenna to the RX IN. I'm currently using an Airspy HF+ as an external pan-adapter with my IC-7610 in this manner, using an external 2-way splitter. What info did you have with regards to the RX IN port being unprotected? The diagram on Page 13-6 of the IC-7610 manual doesn't imply that you are bypassing any protection by using the RX loop?

    • @RateMyRadio
      @RateMyRadio  6 років тому

      Dear Mark, re: protection its just the rumour going around; but I haven't investigated it personally.
      Understand that this behaviour is pretty common, but I had hoped the IC-7610 would follow in Kenwood's footsteps and allow the RX Out to be used as an RX Out as well as simply a loop.
      Do you find that unfair? Just curious,

      Jarrad...with your contacts and relationship with Icom Australia, can you ask them if they know *for sure* if the IC-7610 RX receive ports *are protected* during transmit? That would be great to know. 73! de WX0V

    Curious why do you use an SDR Play device? What is wrong with the IC-7610 receiver/interface?

    • @RateMyRadio
      @RateMyRadio  6 років тому

      I don't personally, but a viewer asked if it was possible, so I investigated it for them. They had purchased an SDR Play along with their IC-7610 because the manual and marketing doesn't make it clear how the port works.

    This is perfectly normal. You broke the receive loop via the menu. This lets you install a separate receive antenna on the RX input jack or a bandpass filter between the jacks. One could connect both jacks to a T connector and the SDR to the common and monitor what is on the line. On my IC-7300 I installed the RX-7300 kit which provides the same 2 ports however there is no menu setting of course. The "fail" is on the Kenwoods which do not provide the dual jacks so you can break the connection and insert a filter.

    • @RateMyRadio
      @RateMyRadio  6 років тому

      I definitely understand that point of view Steve; there are many among us however who would like the Flexibility of choosing whether to break the receive loop or not. I for one would never install the RX-7300 kit in my IC-7300, but that's just my personal take on things.
      Its not a big deal at all for me, but I know it will be for quite a few people whom the IC-7610 is their first radio with this feature.
      Once again, a polarising video. I personally feel we should push manufacturers to deliver the functionality we desire, not stick to 'the way things have always been'.
      What are your thoughts with respect to my perspective?
      73, Jarrad VK3BL

      Again... I think ICOM did this correctly and it is not an #EpicFail as you state. To provide a lossless RX output would require a gain compensation amplifier and impedance matching corrections. You can use a T connector and suffer the measly 3db loss if desired. I see no issue here other than you trying to manufacture one. In fact this makes me want to purchase a 7610 even more :*)

      Another fine comment by Mr. Ellington. Thank you sir, I couldn't have said it better.

      Dear Steve,
      I'm glad the video has sold you on an IC-7610; you won't see mine leaving my shack anytime soon - its a lovely radio :)
      I wouldn't recommend using a T connector due to the non-perfect input impedance of each device connected, as well as the fact it halves the antenna impedance presented to each nominal 50 ohm device. Big deal? Probably not but in no way an ideal solution.
      Out of interest, how much do you estimate the suggested gain compensation (buffer) amplifier would cost, as a percentage of the design budget?
      Its quite strong language to accuse me of attempting to manufacture an issue; the facts are both Kenwood and Yaesu provide such a feature; it is not unreasonable to expect Icom to have done so.
      The viewer who asked the question this video answered purchased an SDR Play RSP2 along with their IC-7610; the reason they asked it is because the manual was unclear.
      Whether or not we like the implementation of something (I personally agree that I would take an RX Loop over JUST an RX Out), doesn't prevent us from critiquing the design.
      I'm not sure why your follow up comment got auto moderated for 'bad language', but I have since approved it upon waking up.
      Thanks for the reply,
      73, Jarrad VK3BL

    thats why i didnt think twice when i bought my new 590SG and RSP2 instead of 7300. 7610 is a nice rig though.

      We would love to have a TS-590SG in the shack one day; they are a classic radio. If I enjoyed computer operation at home (I work in IT), I would be tempted to use such a setup.
      However we do definitely prefer the user experience of traditional, knobbed radios. It sounds like your setup provides both :)
