- Aria from Act I from Bizet's "Carmen." Elina Garanca (Carmen). Conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Production: Richard Eyre (2009). From the 2010 Live in HD transmission.
Her voice is so strong that the high notes sound deep.
I think this singer is a good example of a high pitch with large resonance. To my completely untrained layperson musical ear, she sounded both high and low at the same time. This video has a good explanation: ua-cam.com/video/RCp-GBdjQuo/v-deo.html

This is the song that’s everyone’s heard somewhere, but we don’t know where. But almost anyone would be able to recognize this.
Plenty more famous tunes in the full opera e.g. Seguidilla, gypsy song, toreodor song, etc. The whole opera is beautiful.
Exactly what transpired with me. Kept hearing snippets of this all over the place in commercials, movies and TV shows then finally was watching an episode of Archer where "Carmen" was mentioned and I heard the music intro and those dulcet tones of the female voice and I knew I FINALLY found the song. Now to listen to the rest of this opera...
The science !
I know exactly where I first heard it. Hey Arnold did a parody episode on this. They went on a field trip to see this opera and suddenly they were all the characters instead.
@@molochsorcery4357 Sometimes commercials, movies and TV shows lead to a good end.
Carmen (the opera) is very well constructed, you can enjoy every note of it, not only wait for the significant arias.
The thing that is so great about Elina Garanca's Carmen was that she knew how to bring the seductive energy to the character with her voice and acting to the point where it feels real. Carmen is a character who's not only seductive, but she's her own boss and Elina nailed it! This is Tony-winning acting!

Like Shakespeare, it's not enough to just say the words, you have to properly PERFORM it.
The Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's the Magic flute is a magnificent feat of vocal gymnastics when merely sung, but PERFORMED, this is a mother making a demand of her daughter with the musical equivalent of "I brought you into this world, and I CAN TAKE YOU OUT OF IT".
[For prime example look for the UA-cam video of it performed by Diana Damrau, The Royal Opera]
Carmen is an utterly amoral temptress, wanton and seductive, and she needs to be performed that way.
Elina Garanca NAILED IT.
Rugged and sensuality not only in her voice but her expression and her way to command her presence. Sensuality and seductiveness at its best. What a woman, what a voice.
Garanca is one of the finest Carmens since the great Rise Stevens (q.v.).

I never saw Matt Damon mopping the floor, but I understand your point. She probably never squezes her clothes at home but she knows. Good support and breath technique is the answer. You only need to stand and plant yourself if you're a beginner. Lots of singers with good support and breath techniques can sing laying down, it happens a lot in rock singing especially. An example would be Maynard James Keenan from Tool and his weird posture in Sober live, and when he once sang a song while wrestling a drunk audience member who invaded the stage.
MAGNIFIQUE OPERA.... comique...
Merveilleuse Carmen...
Funny how a single incredible performance will leave you disappointed with any other rendition
I was about to comment that. I just can't watch any other performance of Carmen except Garančas
I think the role of Carmen has to bring a sense of Alure and Seduction, a hint of mischief and danger, with the exception of grace. Those traits make up the role of Carmen, and it is a bit difficult for I guess some opera singers to bring. But this performance is very sexy and I think that's what make this performance sexy.

I often come back to this video,it's one of my favourite interpretations of this opera ever, voice and acting are both on point.Elina Garanca perfectly embodies Carmen's free, rebellious and sultry spirit:Carmen is shamelessly herself leaving nothing to subtlety.
I love how "alive" the setting looks, with all the actors engaged in the scene. And Elina was probably made for this role. Superb performance.
+Guilherme Eddino Watch the 1978 version with Placido Domingo as Don Jose. Best version IMO. (The characters are a lot more animated than this. )
Binu George what does "the characters are a lot more animated than this" even mean? You get more points in opera for moving about? Absolute nonsense, most people go to opera for the quality of the singing!
Smoothmicra absolutely false. Opera is just as much about acting as it is about singing. If you watch opera just for the singing you might as well just go to a concert.
Which would be a fair point if he said the acting was much better in the earlier performance, but he didn't, he said it was "more dynamic", whatever that means. Opera is, of course, a balance of acting and singing, wouldn't disagree. To counter your point though, you can listen to an opera on the radio and enjoy it immensely, however you wouldn't get the same pleasure from watching it without sound, regardless of how good the acting is! :)
Jasmine Agree 100%. Her performance is out standing and I swear her singing improves dramatically. I keep waiting for the men around her to burst into flame. She projects so much sexual energy she must raise the temperature at the Met by 10 or 20 degrees.

I just loved this. I have not seen many, but this is clearly my favourite. Spendid! ❤
I like how she's quite literally dancing to her own beat, like she's ever so slightly slower than the orchestra and choir. Suits the story.
The moment with the flower on the soldier's belly is wonderful and extremely provocative! I didn't expect that, the director has shown some nerve there. And what about the actress... The perfect Carmen, an extraordinary performance!
That soldier is one lucky guy.🌹🤗💘
Great performance and very naturally acted to perfection.
i agree
She is a dynamic, forceful talent of very high intelligence and naughty humor. A tremendous musician too. Very different from the very great Cecilia Bartoli in tone and style but are we not fortunate to walk this scorched earth with two such enormously gifted, hard-working musical singers/actors as these two ladies....keeping in mind how very easy it is to criticize and find fault even with the Angels.
I've seen Carmen live a couple of times, and also watched more renditions than I can remember. However, Elina's portrayal of the lead better captures the sultry, mischievous and positively devilish flirting character of Carmen better than any soprano I have seen. It's all in those eyes which are simply mesmerising.
I agree 100. She is the total package, how many times, you saw not mezzo to jump in... she is the real one and great neutral package, not too extreme such as old portray as a horny, or dominated...leave it to our own imagination...
And the smile.
*sopranos shouldn’t even do carmen. but YES do i agree
I agree with you. Seing her out of the scene would make one think she would play Juliet or Marguerite, but here she is showing that she can be "devilish flirting" too.
Carmen is the quasi conter revolution by lasting enty ...there is an great potency by the surround crowds of interrogation to the scene.
She nailed it!!!
The problem is what happens when you hear someone else do this part with not even half the voice or acting talent?
No, on the contrary she did not.
CptSeagullEight - a lighter voice will not be able to get through the card scene in this opera. Think Julia Migenes-Johnson. She was a fantastic Carmen in the 1980s movie, but she herself said that she couldn't sing this role on stage. (edited to add) Besides - Carmen isn't an ingenue or young lady. She is a vulgar gypsy who works in a cigar or cigarette factory and occasionally helps smugglers by seducing body guards. Lighter voices are better suited for ingenues like Zerlina.
CptSeagull Eight Antonacci has an interesting voice. She actually started as a mezzo soprano and then switched to soprano roles apparently, so she clearly has strong low notes, IMHO. Now, Sarah Brightman would be a joke, she'd not even be heard in soubrette roles which is why I named Migenes-Johnson who has a light soprano voice and mostly performed in musicals, but who nevertheless was able to sing Lulu at the Met to much acclaim. Migenes-Johnson was a nice Carmen in the movie, not sure if you've seen it.
CptSeagull Eight - I was curious about Antonacci, so I read about her. I am not a singer even though I had voice lessons for personal enjoyment when I was already out of college and working. I had a light soprano, but it is way too light for opera. At any rate, I could never sing in public, totally losing it in front of people, maybe only in front of friends in my living room. I don't know much about metal though. Brightman voice is very small, nice timbre but so thin, and yes, she cannot do lower notes.
Paint me like one of your French girls...... yeah I meant this one
She's Latvian, though. :)
Omg! 😂😂😂
Except that Carmen (the role) is a Spanish Gypsy.
So....it's an opera about a Spanish gypsy, sung in French by Elina Garanca, who is Latvian.........alright people
@Rsy Tn the story is about a Spanish gypsy, written by a Frenchman, Bizet. But the setting is in Spain.
She's great, and everybody knows she's great. But what really adds to this performance is all the background folks are really on point too. They're all responding and reacting, even when they're not the focus. It's great stuff.

Gracias Elina.
Voilà!!!!!
God, I wish I was that orange

that can be arranged!
God, I have had exactly the same thought the split second I've seen that!!! She looks gorgeous, BTW! I'd love to be "entre ses seins"!
She so beautiful, elegant, and talented, your voice is strong and melodic, your eyes are daring.
While watching this video, the only thing I wanted was for it to never end, that voice, that music, that scene, that woman, everything is perfect.

This amazing woman looks like this role was written specifically for her
The best performance and singing ever of all times. What beautiful voice. Truly amazing!
Juste Magnifiquement Magnifique
Et je pèse mes mots mesdames & monsieur
I love when the whole ensemble really hits those four-note riffs.
Freddie Mercury trying to explain to that EMI's man of how next Queen's album should be inspired by.
YES HAHAHA
Yes!!!
Bohemian Rhapsody (movie) brought me here!

This woman is absolutely fantastic! Bravo!
Fantastic voice and acting!
One of the best Carmens! Bravissimo!!!The sound is superb!👍👏 🥇 👌
I think Elinca Garanca is one of the best opera singers.
Her voice is sweet and dynamic.
Of course she is so beautiful.
She is.
I saw this live and was surprised by the power and beauty of this play. Amazing performance of a masterpiece.
First opera I attended and it was an amazing experience! If only more people would give opera a change.
Where was it?
@@somnathghosh6165 Liege. Beautiful classic opera hall they have.
you were at the Metropolitan seeing this performance live?!?
@@mariacappilla5441 No, in Liege. It was the same group and performance.
What a charisma, what a frivolity of Elina, no longer to be surpassed, exactly captures the message of this opera! 😀❤👍👍👍
I love the energy in this so much! I feel so sad that I can’t have this sort of energy in my life. It’s so assertive and playful, 100%. Everyone who is watching here it is quite amused by her flirtatious and straightforward demeanor, and I live for it. This whole scene shows such strange humanity or unity to it ahah.
Her talent is amazing! And the stage looks incredible!
L'amour (x4)

Надо Celui qu" on vient de refuser/.....................Il vient s"en va puis il revient........ J"ai recu un message en anglais dont je n"ai pas compris l"intention de l"envoyeur/ J"ai corrige la faute dans le texte de Habanera/ Au lieu de S"il lui convient de refuser il faut lire Celui qu"on vient de refuser/ Thank you for your answer but you didn"t understand the meaning of my comment/ In Habanera"s text which I learnt by there is a mistake that i have corrected/// Instrad of S"il lui convient de refuser it should be written Celui qu"on vient de refuser/// Tel etait le but de mon commentaire.
I'm french and i still dont understand what they are saying XD
"Je t'aime, dépêche toi de me pécho"
Momo Is merci poto sans toi j aller galere a comprendre ce qu elle chante
Mo Is merci
Fell in love with this soprano from this performance…the acting and voice man
I've been watching this aria for over 3 years, and honestly I can't get enough, I just give it a 1/2 month break until I get back...
I'm glad I'm not the only one with this weird addiction.
Someone uploaded the whole opera. This is act 1. Act 2 is on the same channel. ua-cam.com/video/s8PxCwN1DUU/v-deo.htmlsi=oLcj0Y__ppP7jS9c
How can anyone with the remotest trace of a musical soul give this a thumbs down? Extraordinary performance
She is totally dominating the men there. And the scene! And the act! What a Woman!
