Building a Broadcast Streaming Studio in My Classroom

  • This summer I wanted to build a new set for the high school Broadcast class that I teach. It was a crazy process that came out much better than I ever could have hoped thanks to help from a very unlikely source.
    The beginning of the video is me giving context and background info, go ahead and skip to 10:49 if you just want to see the studio/set.
    Here are a few lights mentioned in the video:

    There is nothing wrong with teachers doing their regular jobs everyday, teaching kids everything that they know, etc. That is perfectly fine and they are already heroes for that. But its people like you who go the extra mile that makes life even more sweeter. This is why the universe conspired to provide you with everything you needed to build this beautiful studio. All the people who helped you, the resources, donations, and physical and mental strength you needed for this project was provided to you because the universe knows you will use it for a greater purpose, with genuine sincerity and I hope this inspires even more people to do the same.

    Well done! I'm building one for my business to shoot vids in-house. I do praise and worship at my church and we have over $1.5mm in video, sound and lighting equipment :) I have $1500 bux. I built one before that would rival that of many larger groups. NOW that I've seen what you've done, it's given me TONS more ideas. Thanks for the vid! Good Luck Tom!

    I've seen your video more than once now and found parallels with my experience. I work in the disability industry and run a media activity. Since its inception , we have
    grown to a multiple camera operation. The struggles that we have had to endure are very similar to yours, we've basically self funded to acquire equipment and with my technical background got our studio working. The studio is very near to being fitted out with separate control room and sound proofing etc. The story, your journey is extremely motivating and it is great you have shared it.

      @@tombuck I am in the middle of designing my 2nd Video production system. The accent lighting you cobbled together is awesome & borrow your concepts for sure. My current project presents more challenges people/portrait lighting over a 40 foot square area. 200 lights/locations should do it if my math & geometry is correct. I normally run only 16 to 20 lights. I am also willing to share ideas for lighting on a budget.

It was so great to see what you’ve accomplished/ how far you’ve come. I honestly think your current studio 2023 is the best looking on UA-cam! Better than the hundreds is see included MKBHD. Really cool project. You did a brilliant job. I don't understand how teachers are left to spend their own money when in my opinion they don't even make enough for all the work that they do. I am not a teacher, but I know how hard some of my teachers used to work, and not only during school hours, it was pretty much during the evening too. So I really appreciate all the hard work teachers like you do for all their students. You should be proud of what you have accomplished. Also thanks for the ideas on how to improve the video set. Bravo!

I loved this video and I love your studio. I'm sure by now it looks totally different. I am very interested in the lighting and sound aspects of everything. With everything online now we are switching gears to make it more of a studio since our audience will be virtual for now. I would love some tech tips!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 роки тому +2

      Always mice to meet another creative teacher! I’ve been using my main camera for all of my virtual meetings (connected to the computer with an elgato camlink). It probably isn’t necessary, but students notice the difference and then ask how I’m doing it, which gives me a chance to teach them a bit more about how things like that work.
      The studio looks pretty similar, but I did replace all the lights with LED versions so that we use less power and they don’t generate heat either 👍

      Yes, that's VERY tricky.
      A simple route, especially if you're using LED lights, is to get one of the outlet remote control systems (it's like a plug you connect to an outlet and then plug the light into and you can turn it on and off with a remote- each system usually has like 3-5 things per remote and they're dirt cheap). There area million options out there, but something like this: amzn.to/3X6u1SN

    I ran my high school's tv studio as a student for 3 years. I had a 7 minute show each morning and never got a single rehearsal. I wanted to build things, organize things, improve things, and upgrade things, but I couldn't. Because I couldn't just go in there whenever I wanted. I was a student. My time and resources were extremely limited. I had drawings of sets much like these. The entire show was dominated by the morning announcements, so my entire show was scripted by random teachers.
    I was able to accomplish quite a bit on the graphics side since I could design and prepare all of that at home (hundreds of late nights). I even created a completely novel afternoon broadcast to show that you could use the studio to communicate the announcements without a set. It looped the announcements with audio and video. Wasn't easy to engineer. The idea was to allow the morning show to actually be a show, not just a table reading of cooking instructions.
    5 years later, I am thinking about going into teaching. I see this video and I see this project as something I could have done as a 10th grader if I had had the resources and time. This was my vision at that time. I had the technical knowledge to do all of this at that age. So my concern about this video is I wonder if you have any students at your school like me. If you did, I would imagine those students would have been extremely disappointed when they came in on the first day of school and to their horror realize that ALL of this work has already been done. They didn't get to help. They didn't get to contribute. They didn't get to design their own studio. Every detail of that studio is you. It's not your studio, sir. It's your students' studio. It seems to me like you treated this project as if it was your basement studio at home.
    That's no way to teach.

      I see where you're coming from and respect the viewpoint, but there are definitely a few things to clear up:
      1. I DEFINITELY had students like you. Absolute leaders who wanted to dig in to every step of the process. This build was based on a lot of what we worked together to develop before the school year ended.
      2. This was the foundation. Once it was finished, the students were then able to come in and add their ideas on top to grow, innovate, and improve.
      3. There's a very practical side of this too: there was no time to do this during the school day, and the logistics of organizing a build like this with students during summer or a break were very tough. Add to that power tools, heavy objects, and light electrical work, and it's really not a place for students to work and definitely not something our district would've been able to authorize.
      Please give me the benefit of the doubt before laying harsh criticisms to my teaching.

    • @jordanhenshaw
      @jordanhenshaw 2 роки тому

      @@tombuck Also it’s fantastic your school has a teacher in their studio who actually knows their stuff.
      Practicality was the reason I was so limited in what I could do. I mean we were right next door to the theater shop, but that’s another story.
      Zero rehearsals, zero time in the studio after school, zero budget. Nightmare. All I was able to do was improve the graphics and I went all out on that. They put 10k into upgrades right before I showed up and the two clowns they decided to put in charge of spending it blew half of it on a $5,000 switcher panel we absolutely didn’t need.
      I kind of want to be a teacher so that I can fill that void and mentor other people, students, who are the way I was. I certainly didn’t have that mentor. I was on my own. All the way up until the hours after I graduated. They just didn’t have it together. All they had to do was put the theatre teacher in charge. She would have been fantastic. But instead, all the responsibility of making sure my baby would be ok fell onto me and onto the students I trained.
      That’s sort of why I’m thinking about studying theatre. I could have taught a halfway competent course in video/broadcast even when I was in 10th grade. I was literally co-teaching the brand new class on it. At least at my school, they were willing to throw anyone into that role. You could get replaced in a heartbeat. Unless I’m mistaken, you don’t generally need a degree specifically in video/broadcast. If you’re at a school with a full theater and have the theatre degree however, you rule that roost. You need that degree to be there. They can’t put a Spanish teacher in charge of it on a whim like they can with a studio. Of the 5 most dangerous places in a high school, the first 4 are probably in the theater.
      So my (extremely tentative) plan is to get a teaching degree in theatre and find a school that only wants a theatre class, broadcast, and film class, or some combination. You can turn a studio into closet, but a theater is a massive part of the school with that fly space and the sheer amount of infrastructure that makes it a theater and not an auditorium. And don’t get me wrong - before there was an incident between the theatre teacher and I, I absolutely loved theatre. Now that her and I have reconciled, all of that is flooding back in.
      Is that a rational, well informed approach?

      The actual equipment was part of a grant and that total was closer to $25K. The cameras are Sony XD Cams. These are just regular HD, but in the time since there have been some 4K models released.
      If I were building the studio today, I think 4K would be a good thing to consider. I might also even look into some of the options from Blackmagic Design, to get cameras/switchers/etc all from one system.

I know little to nothing about film cameras. I'm writing a grant to purchase equipment to film and produce silent films. Would you be able to give me advice on a simple to learn film camera that's going to have excellent quality? I'm I looking at spending $400 per camera? $800 per camera. I'd allow the students to use their Iphones to film, but our school is a zero cell phone school, even for classes. Congratulations again.
