How I built my own studio backdrop for recording professional looking news broadcasts

In doing the research to build my own backdrop for the news studio set, I was hard-pressed to find ANY examples of how the studio sets were built, so as I built mine, I documented my progress with time-lapses and videos. I also chronicle what worked and what didn't work along the way. I did make errors but all in all the finished product blew away my expectations!
I have dreamed of building a backdrop for the news studio for years. When I first started OlyTV in 2015, we filmed on the white and blue painted corner of the classroom. Then I put up a few fake bamboo plants and a black backdrop. I still felt like something was missing. It still had that low-budget broadcast classroom feel. I had to raise the bar.
I drew up multiple plans over the years but nothing came to fruition until this year when the school was shut down for the second time after surpassing the 15 case threshold. Though I was busy teaching via live streams over Canvas and Q&A's on Zoom, I built the set between classes. If I wasn't in a Zoom call, I was building. And even during some Zoom calls, students could see my progress in the background.
I tried to make it as simple as possible, with as few cuts as necessary. Some of the cuts are custom to the layout of my studio space and can be modified for a different layout. For example, I raised the angled panel up 8 inches because of the back corner of the existing platform that I didn't want to alter, so I just built around it!

I've built several news like video sets over my years starting out when i was just a teen. I ended up mostly in radio but very much enjoyed creating these things and worked at a local TV station running their morning and midday news. The last one I built now gone was a half scale due to limits in room size octangular setting. I don't know where you got your desk, but the one I had I built. To match the set it was also half octangular, built pedestal for it to sit on. Had local glass cutter place custom cut the top layer that set over top. Background had window for large flat screen TV to mount in. Had fully functional weather center on right side, panel mounted weather instruments and video monitors through wall. Actually looked decent for working with free panel scraps and I bought the boards.
Awesome! I am pretty limited on space so we make do with what we have, but I would love a weather center. Our news desk is just an office desk I got free from the local classifieds! I would love a new one with a nice glass top. I thought about having a screen behind the desk, but we use the desk for all sorts of school things. I didn’t want to have to make graphic for everything we use it for.
@@KirkHMiller When I first built the last studio, the flat screens were very new and also very expensive. The window behind the set I started out with just blinds over them. Today everything is much cheaper. Also now greenscreen or chroma key is more accessible. I used to do an on line weather forecast for my local area. Now days I'm mostly radio. The only space I'd have to build a "weather set" or "news & weather set" would be the basement. It's not very nice down there now and also the floor above is so low. When I was a teen decades ago I fit better. And as I've already discovered many sets ago, trying to get it to as close to full scale is a must if the person sitting and working at it is a full grown adult. Having a pole barn or free garage with concrete floor and climate control is ideal.

Thanks! I should break it all down... Lumber was about $200, LED Lights were about $100, the rest I found free on the classifieds or had taking up space in my garage!

About 4 days of planning on paper and then a week of actually building it!
