    Dr. Mew, I really need your answers on this as I cannot find any answers on this online and would like your opinion on this as you seem to give rather vague answers in this video and no actual clear or definitive answers or consensus on the matter. Does wearing an Invisalign Clear/Plastic Retainer at night when you are not mewing prevent the results from Mewing? Do you think that I am safe to stop wearing my Invisalign plastic/clear retainers forever and not even put them on at night? Because I hear some claim that retainers at night can prevent results from mewing but then others saying that it is fine. My main concern with this is that I do not want my teeth to revert back to their original crowded and overbite form that I had before my Invisalign braces, but I also want to get results from mewing the best that I can. Do you think stopping this Invisalign Clear retainer use at night can cause retention or my teeth to go back to being crowded? It's a catch 22 basically because wearing the retainers at night can potentially revert any type of progress that I have made in the day from pushing my tongue on the roof of my mouth to expand my maxilla, but at the same time, not wearing the retainers at night could make my teeth crowded again and there is no 100% certain way of me knowing which way things are going to go. Do you think that getting a permanent or bonded/fixed braces in the back of my teeth and having proper tongue posture or pushing my tongue on the roof of my mouth would be another viable option or would this prevent mewing results as well? Bottom line, is wearing the retainer at night harmful or not? Should people risk ditching retainers forever with the risk of retention? Should they just get fixed retainers behind their teeth instead?. I understand this is a pretty lengthy comment, but I really wanted your opinion on this. If you could answer my questions and/or give any advice on this, I would greatly appreciate it, thank you.

    Dr. Mike Mew has contradicting statements in regards to what he wants patients to actually do when it comes to mewing after braces... On one hand, in the video "Stopping Orthodontic Retainers?" he tells you that you should get fixed retainers behind your front 4 teeth and then mew, but then in this video, he states at the end that he advises against fixed retention and that he tells his patients to just focus on mewing and good posture instead... So which one is it...? You want us to just take Dr. Mew's word on faith and just HOPE that our teeth don't relapse after ditching any type of retainers all together and just hope that mewing alone with not cause relapse? The fact that Mike Mew has both of these videos up on his channel makes no sense as they contradict each other in terms of what he wants people to do in regards to fixed retainers. This is apparent by the fact that this same question gets asked over and over again on the great work forums, the orthotropics reddit, the orthotropics email, and none of which give any clear answers and just guide us back to these 2 videos, both of which contract each other and give no clear answers. But according to Dr. Mike Mew, he has answered this question even though he simply gave vague suggestions, maybes and no actual clear answers in regards to this, either to avoid liability or not knowing himself what the actual answer is in regards to whether people should stick with having a fixed permanent retainer behind their teeth and mewing OR just ditching any type of fixed retainer all together and just focusing on mewing instead.

      What he may be trying to say is should you use a retainer use a fixed one, but it would be much better you do the retainer work yourself by mewing. Of course he can't say "don't use" a retainer at all, that would be putting himself at risk of getting blamed for your own decision. I don't know I may be wrong.

      Yeah, like Ce Ba said, I’m pretty sure he was saying he wouldn’t want a person to wear fixed retainers forever, but if necessary, use those fixed retainers for a temporary period of time. Ideally, he would suggest that a person could practice good tongue posture, without a retainer, to prevent a severe relapse. But of course, if you choose not to use retainers, you alone are responsible for what may happen.

    Another issue with upper fixed retainers, I have found, is that the bottom front teeth, in closing, come to rest on the wire and the wire-posts, these being an obstacle to further closure. This may not affect mewing but does affect closure position and appearance of the lips and chin. This may difference may be in millimeters but it shows.

      Temporary retainers that cover all the teeth in the upper jaw are counterproductive if you want to move your maxilla up and forwards. But not because they stop expansion, but because when your maxilla moves, all teeth move with it. And you are blocking that movement.

      Gray how do you make space ?

    • @Grays_Plays
      @Grays_Plays 7 років тому +3

      It all comes down to getting the tongue up for long enough mate. That's all there is to it really, just focus on your oral posture, especially getting the back part of the tongue up and over time you'll expand your jaws to make room for the wisdom teeth to come through. Based on my own experience they'll erupt when you make enough space for them to do so.

      Correct oral posture

    • @Rick_Sanchez_Jr.

      @@DarthLordize I don't think correct oral posture alone is good enough to prevent all forms of relapse. Sometimes there are cases where patients end up with even the slightest form of relapse with even doing mewing and correct tongue posture all along, I think the fixed retainers on only the front 4 teeth and bottom teeth were the correct solution by Dr. Mew originally, however, he just contradicts his advice here so I really don't understand which of the 2 videos I should listen to. I don't want to just CHANCE getting possible relapse so I think getting a fixed retainer and mewing is what I am going to do myself.

    I had 4 pre-molars extracted and now i pretend to take off the braces. Should i use retainers to prevent open the spaces between the teeth or just the proper oral posture and tongue placement is enough to avoid it? I 've been doing mewing for about 1 year and a half. Obs: i am currently 2 years and 3 months in the orthodontic treatment with braces, it was necessary the extractions cause it was a open bite case.

    my fixed retainer was coming out so I ripped it off and threw it out (shouldn't have thrown it out they're expensive) that was 6 months ago and my teeth are slowly starting to shift despite mewing, so I wore my retainer at night. I never had crooked teeth I got braces because I had a big gap in my teeth and now it starts to open, I'm taking a gamble hoping that they won't open that much but I've heard diastema (gap teeth) will always open up I'm getting the four teeth fixed now, does anyone have any opinion on diastema will I always need a fixed retainer besides my progress with mewing?
