Permanent Retainer Vs. Removable Retainer... Which is Better!?

- Permanent retainer vs a regular retainer...which is better?
I have my personal preferences but below are some of the pros and cons of each.
Permanent retainer:
Pros:
1. It is on your teeth permanently therefore you don't have to worry about wearing your retainer enough.
2. It isn't visible therefore it is very esthetic
Cons:
1. A permanent retainer can break easily and is difficult to repair.
2. A permanent retainer is very hard to clean and you tend to get plaque on the back of your front teeth.
Removable retainer:
Pros:
1. You can keep your teeth the cleanest with a removable retainer.
2. If you get a clear plastic they look good but not as good as a permanent retainer.
3. Easy to replace if lost or broken.
Cons:
1. If you don't wear your normal retainer your teeth will shift.
2. After a certain amount of time the retainer needs replacing as it gets gross!

I've had my permanent retainer since 2013 and it is still going strong. When I go in for my routine checkups, my teeth are still in perfect alignment from when they were aligned in 2013 -- my dentist always refers to me as 'perfect teeth'! They've mentioned there is some buildup around the retainer, but it doesn't take maybe 10 minutes more to make it completely clean again. If you get a bonded retainer, my biggest advice is to not skip your bi-annual cleanings and invest in a Waterpik!
That's some useful info. Thanks for sharing! Did they take a long time to be made at first? And what material are they made of, as I've heard there's a risk of breakage
@@Julia-3332 They aren't 'made' , it is a metal wire (just like braces are a wire) that are bonded to the back side of your teeth so nobody can see it. There is minimal risk of breakage because its a wire, if it happens, its just the glue cracked or you ate something sharp that snipped it.
This really gave me reassurance. I have a permanent bottom one and my removable bottom one cracked but I haven’t noticed any shifting and yes the water pik is everything!!!
@@justclassicglam Thanks for lmk!
I've has my permanent retainer for 33 years. Getting in removed because I am worried about the metal. Also getting all of my silver feelings taken out too.
This is on point! I removed my braces yesterday and I chose the removable retainer because just like the doctor said it can be straight as long as you're responsible. Thank you sm doc! ❤️
It's all fun and games until you have to wear them to your grave
@@igniii3348 meh, I think that after 60 you'll just dont give a f
They gave me both
I just got my braces off last Tuesday and I was happy. Now I’m wearing my retainers( I have my bottom ones on right now.
I have had my permanent retainer in for 15 years on the bottom and the removable on top. I am now getting permanent on the top as I’m not disciplined enough to wear the removable retainer. I don’t find the permanent retainer terrible, just take the time to floss and clean them properly. 👍🏻
You’re only opting for the permanent because you’re not disciplined it seems.
@@Elguapo93 its literally what she said, sherlock.
I want to do the opposite so bad. I can't stand the amount of food that gets stuck under the permanent retainer
How expensive are permanent retainers
@Elguapo93 you really have a nerve to shame someone for their own preference, it's a reason they have choices for own individual needs. They clearly chose permanent because they don't believe they would put them in everyday, if you can then ,I will be sure to tell publix to give you a cookie for a job well done. You're ignorant and judgmental
I will remove my braces by end of this year after decades lol, ang my dentis advise for a permanent retainer and now I realized i rather choose the removable one. I want feedom from metal on my teeth so this helpful video. Thanks doc 😊
Same 😂
What did you end up with?
You ARE absolutely CORRECT!! I wear both and believe or not, I now have a gap due to the perm. retainer needs repair.😢😢
Oh no, I hope you managed to get it sorted already. I've been wearing just my permanent retainer only for a while because I need to get my removable one replaced, and my teeth have still shifted a bit :(
Thank you for making this video, gonna remove my braces soon, I was lowkey afraid that removable braces will shift my teeth back easier but clearly it's the go to! Now I can relax lol.
This video was so helpful. I have been doing a lot of research & I was leaning toward the permanent retainers, but once I saw this video, it changed my mind. Thank you 😂😂😂😂
Did you go with removable?
I had a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth. However, at some point, the cement broke and the wire came loose. My dad had to use some pliers to get it out. Fortunately, only one tooth turned on it's side. Otherwise, there was no problem with the rest. If I have them corrected, I'm seriously considering a removable one instead.
get a good cleaning by a dentist! there's still some glue over those teeth
Don’t get the permanent retainer. Basically is braces and is a PAIN TO clean. Just keep removable retainers near your sink when you brush your teeth at night.
Edit: It takes forever to floss properly aswell.
Which removable retainer you suggest i got hard plastic transparent one wearing it since 3 days can't talk properly and my tongue also feel uncomfortable. Even some time my teeth start to hurt when i bite.
Long story short
Thanks for saving me from that
Bad advice, depends if you need teeth bonding etc. Can't use retainers on bonded teeth, I mean you can but more likely to chip. Permanent is easy
you should put them on your pillow so your head will hit them when u forget lol
I could not stand a fixed retainer. I couldn’t keep my tongue away from it and (psychological most likely) it made me gag! Plus, I just felt like it was gross and not natural. Finally changed to removable.
Any regrets or turning of the teeth? I’ve had a fixed retainer for 10years and hate it
This is the first that give the alternative that are not the best alternative but is a way to at least get a better look even is not perfect. Thanks for that , best wishes
I had a permanent retainer AND a removable holly retainer. Wore the Holly every night and obviously the permanent 24/7. I am now back in braces because neither one kept my teeth from moving. My bottom teeth started hitting my top retainer during the day, moving them backwards, and then the holly would push them back forward at night. They caused trauma to my bottom teeth. What a nightmare. I will never have a permanent retainer again. They don't stay glued, they are costly to have checked, they can pop off and it then becomes an emergency. I was NEVER told any of this when I got them during high school.
so I guess I shouldn't go for a fixed retainer for my upper teeth then...
I only have a hawley retainer for my top teeth but I feel like they're still shifting and I wanted to get a fixed one, but now i dont know what to do
@@mariem3770 I am back in braces (Invisalign) and will be getting an Invisalign retainer. I guess their retainers are better at keeping the teeth in place because they are formed around each tooth? Good luck!
@@mariem3770 please answer me. You mean Hawley retrainer is not working well, right?
I got clear retrainers 3 days ago. I’m thinking about Hawley one. Because clear one is not good for me.
Seems like the orthodontist didn’t put the wire on the appropriate amount of teeth 🦷
@@aishascattred3814 6, all the front teeth on the bottom. I had it in for 20 years... Was never really given any care instructions
So excited! I now look forward to your weekly vids! They are so helpful! Thanks a thousand!
Thank you for watching!
My orthodontist told me I could choose …. Then I got my braces on and they said they were BOTH required THE PLASTIC AND THE WIRE
My permanent retainer broke and I didn’t get it again and now my teeth moved… also I wore removable retainer for 2yrs n I still wear at night…
So permanent retainer is best
I don't understand why my orthodontist plays it as if the choice is not mine. I said from the beginning that I do not want permanent retainers, then they said it's only going to be on the lower jaw... Now I have on both upper and lower, the sensation is terrible, not to mention I have a serious gum disease that got way worse with the braces and gums had receded. I told my dentist as well, that I'm thinking of removing the reteiners and just get the removable one, he doesn't advice as well only because he thinks I will forget to out them on... I feel like it's all about the money... My teeth were not even crooked, there were just some small gaps because of an extracted tooth. So if it's more expensive to place permanent reteiners, let's do it, if it's more expensive to fix such reteiners, let's do them...
In Spain removable one is muchhh more expensive so I had to get the fixed one. On my upper one it broke after 7 years and I replaced it with a new one. But the plaque part is not fun….
I don't know what to do as i have just finished my invisalign and the one tooth at the bottom shifts back when i take them out to eat within that hour.
I don't have a lot of money but the dentist said a fixed retainer will cost me or the essex retainer is included.
Do you think this Essex retainer can keep it in place if i wear them a lot for the next 6 months?
I have been put off the fixed retainer because of the costs if it breaks and the extea cleaning needed.
Any info from others will be appreciated.
I tried smile club after years of not wearing retainers (they broke) and found that they worked and straightened my teeth!, unfortunately you have to either get a permanent retainer or continue treatment, you're teeth are too strong that a piece of plastic will eventually wear out, I had a problem where one tooth from up and one tooth from the bottom shifted and it's affecting my bite, I'd say get the bonded it's what I'm going for,the only pain would be the extra cleaning.
So right now i’m 21. graduated HS 3 years ago and it was rough, i didn’t care about anything, didn’t care about what i wanted to do in the future, and honestly didn’t think i’d even make it past HS. I’ve been trying to think about what i want to do for about a year now and i’ve decided i really want to be an orthodontist but my grades in highschool were awful (1.9 gpa) and my ACT was only 23. im just wondering if it would even be possible for me to pursue this career path and how i would even go about doing it
I mean you would first have to get into college and then go to dentistry school, I’m sure there’s some less selective colleges?
I would recommend speaking to a counselor at a community or local college near you to see what steps you need to take.
Well the fact that you graduated high school automatically makes you eligible for community college. Go from there.
There's always hope! I know people who didn't do well in HS and are orthodontists now. You gotta turn it around, get into college and study like crazy
its all about how bad do you want it.. your 1.9 likely was from being lazy. put the work in. stay focused and it will work out.
I got my permanent retainers as I got my braces off, my question is which one would you recommend feels more comfortable? ( of course with getting used to)
Same... which retainer you have ? I got hard plastic transparent retainer using since 3 days still feel uncomfortable. Can't talk properly also mg Tongue feel uncomfortable

Hi, I got the braces removed 2.5 months ago, I am wearing clear retainers daily,(some days on and off 😬) , I always forget the retainer, here and there, would you advise to get another pair made extra, just in case I loose it, my current teeth shape is what I like, so my worry is, if I loose the current ones, and as I travel alot, if I miss the dentist appointment for some days after loosing the current retainers , will the new retainers will be of my then teeth shape, which will be changed teeth position, and I will not have the current teeth shape which I like ,
Thank you so much for reading this through, (it was long, I know 🙊) 👍
I use to have a permanent retainer but i would play with the metal and pinch my tongue. Well, i broke the retainer and then got temp retainers....i stopped wearing them for years and now i put it back on and it barely fits it pinches my gum so badly. Gonna wear them for a bit and hope i push through the pain
Thanks! Excellent video! And you got great teeth!!
Both make life harder 😬😆
I just got a permanent retainer a few weeks ago and it’s super uncomfortable. It keeps scraping my tongue and sometimes my tongue bleeds. I was given removable retainers as well to wear at night. Can I get the permanent retainer removed and only wear a removable retainer at night or am I stuck with it?
You can remove the permanent one if you want
The permanent retainer is also a life time commitment. Therefore the choice in my mind is between a burden during the night that you don’t experience vs a burden during the day.
I had my braces at 35 and now got it removed after 3.5 yrs . My doctor has placed fixed retainer both on the upper and lower teeth. Also a removable retainer exists for 24 hrs wear.
Btw how is ur teeth so sparkling white, Doctor ?
No real secret other than brushing/flossing and using at home whitening maybe once every 6 months. Thank you
I’ve had mine permanently for almost 18 years!!!, I floss properly and I’m good. My dentist was an experienced magician
I’m deciding what to do for my son. He’s 19… ortho gave me option of permanent and I think that will suit my son better because thinking of lifetime retainers even hurts me to think about it. But then permanent might break? Or cause plaque and cavities? 🤦🏽♀️
@ I understand your concern totally, my dentist in the Uk may have done wonders for me because mine hasn’t broken, my teeth haven’t moved and I don’t trust myself to put retainers on at night for the rest of my life..and the secret is this…Flossing! Everyone should be but with permanent retainers atleast 3-5 times a week, takes a minute, I don’t even remember the retainers most of the time so it’s all up to y’all! Depends on personal choice
I had a friend recently who's permanent metal retainer had fallen off after 6 years. He went back to the orthodontist and they said he didn't need it anymore because his teeth weren't going to shift back anymore. Is this kind of thing common or to be expected?

I have a permanent retainer at the bottom and had a removal one at the top which I don’t have now since doc said I don’t have to wear it anymore, never had issues with the permanent but it’s a total pain in the rear end to floss. I also hated the removal one because i always ended up cracking them or grinding holes into them. I never liked how they felt.

Thank you so much for this video. I am old!! But, I got Invisalign maybe 2 years ago, which didn't quite work on my lower teeth, so now I am in metal braces on the lower. My top teeth are great now thanks to my fantastic orthodontist and I wear a retainer at night. I am VERY happy with my teeth, and I trust that my lower teeth will get straight one day! I will be getting a permanent retainer on the bottom, but after watching this, may ask for the other kind so I can clean my teeth. Will this be insulting if I ask for this? I don't want anyone mad at me!! Thank you!
They definitely won't be mad. Ask away!

Hello, what retainer do you recommend for patients with reabsorbtion and tiny roots?
My lower permanent retainer seems only on 6 front teeth. Will the other teeth shift at all?
Will an electric toothbrush and Waterpik help keep permanent retainers clean?

I didn't know about retainer which we have to wear for a life time. My case is spacing and only some gaps between in front of my teeth. Overall, it isn't that bad looking. Now I'm wearing SL brace for 1 years and 5 months and haven't finished yet. My arch of the teeth in both side are not symmetrical curve and One of my teeth from my left side was misaligned during undergoing brace treatment. The edges of my teeth are broken due to colliding each other during treatment. Is there any backsides if I stop my brace treatment and want to get back my oringinal position of my teeth? I know that teeth will move to its original postion so can I get my old postion one if I take off brace which I'm wearing now?
If I can't and I have to continue my brace treatment, after completing brace, can I only wear removable retainer? I don't like to get fixed retainer because I don't like to get tartar between the base of my teeth. I'm wearing brace for around 1 and half year and there are some tartar under the wire my lower front teeth. Could you give me some advice, please? By the way, I forgot to tell you my age. So after Invisalign, you still have to wear some type of retainers for life? Just that the retainers you use and get after they take off your braces or stop your Invisalign treatment are retainers that only keep your teeth in place rather than do that while moving them around. So if your transitioning from Invisalign treatment to retainers (Invisible Aligners) after your treatment, your just getting Invisalign Aligners without rubber band hooks and attachment slots?
Yes. I just finished my Invisalign treatment after 1 yr and 6 mnths. I was told I'd be getting the fixed retainers. I went home and did research and called the orthodontist back and told them I did not want fixed retainers. I was told I had to have them on the top front teeth, but for the bottom I'd have to wear a tray for 6 weeks 24/7. After that, only at night.
So, as it stands I will have to wear a tray on the top fronts as well as the fixed retainer at night. I don't like any of this and just want removable retainers and nothing else.
The one thing they never tell you about orthodontic treatment is that it's a lifelong commitment.

I just got a permanent retainer put in today and I hate it. My tongue keeps hitting the metal wire and the bonding material. It's very uncomfortable.
My treatment is over and my bite feels off. One of the reasons why I wanted to fix my teeth was for my top teeth to stop pushing my bottom lip down and I still have that problem. Before treatment ended I expressed certain concerns and they convinced me my teeth look fine and this was the extent of what they could do. I already have the permanent retainer solidifying the completion of treatment

Can the plastic retainer not include wisdom teeth or they have to be included so they don‘t grow out because all other teeth are touching with the plastic but the wisdom teeth aren‘t ?
My retainers only go as far back as my 1st molars (also, I had my 3rd molars removed a few years ago, so I don't ever have to worry about those again).
Probably an incredibly niche comment but I have had a top and bottom permanent retainer for about 10 years now and I have some thoughts. Food gets stuck EVERYWHERE no matter what you eat its stuck. Flossing GOOD BYE. Yes its possible to floss with permanent retainers but as someone who hated flossing BEFORE having it, have fun doing it AFTER. You have to do this threading crap that takes like 20 min.
But onto my niche issues, I have really bad OCD, and sometimes when I "remember" I have the retainers I start to freak out, like having something in your mouth that you feel 24/7 and can't take out absolutely freaks me out sometimes, this is my biggest issue.
But Hey, 24 years old, my teeth look amazing after a decade with them so I guess it depends on the pros and cons lol.
Have you considered getting the permanent one removed and having a removable one made?

Somerimes permanent retainer is required because lets say you get teeth bonding, a permanent retailer is better and a splint at night is needed.
If you have the permanent retainer but want to switch to the removable one can I do that?

I’m literally scared of having a bonded retainer, do you still have to avoid the same foods that you do in braces?
I still have my braces on so I don’t really know but my sister has the bonded retainer on her lower teeth and she eats EVERYTHING and has had no problem.
I still am scared of a bonded retainer, it’s really hard to clean with braces, so I presume it’s just as hard to floss with a bonded retainer

Hey doc. I just had my braces off and found a minor midline shift. I consulted the doctor and he said that it's minor shift and will be back in the position in a few days. So can you tell me will this fix as the doctor said!
Please am just too worried..
If it's minor it likely won't affect you but just keep monitoring and ask your orthodontist.
Hey I have both Hawley and clear retainers. I have had permanent one for 1 year. Can I now only wear these removable ones only at night each day?
what are your thoughts? which ones did you like more?
I have a permanent retainer but I have to wear a removable one at night. is that normal?
Yeah most orthos recommended that
My orthodontist has also recommended that, but it's stupid, I can't do it anymore. There's a fine balance between focusing on having "the best teeth" and a miserable life, or just "good teeth" and an easy life.
I truly don’t understand how hard it is to wear your retainer… if you don’t want to wear it, why’d you get braces to begin with?
Thank you for the video!)) Please, tell me about your attitude about wearing both types of retainers at the same time, is it too much or not? Or maybe it is more than enough to wear a removable retainer for a night? Especially considering the lower jaw, I have heard from my doctor that it ss an absolute must to where both - permanent and removable retainers, otherwise, the teeth will shift, because they are rather tended to
Is it possible to switch from permanent retainer to removable one? (After wearing permanent for first years after braces)I took my braces off today and orthodontist installs permanent. I'm currently 21, wore braces slightly more then 2 years.
How did it go ?
Can you do a video on tongue thrusting and treatments?
I am so confused because my doctor told me that retainers have to be worn 24/7 even the removable ones, but every video that i watch says it has to be worn only while sleeping.🤔
Wear it 24/7 for the first-six months after debrace, after that period you can just wear it every night lifetime.,hope it helps.
Can you start with a removable one and switch to a permanent one later on if I want?

Permanent retainers is for life time??? Plzz let me know
It is but technically it's not entirely permanent. It can be broke, removed or replaced.
I have both.
Can you eat hard candies and nuts while wearing the removable retainer? I’m a snacker throughout the day, will I have to remove my retainer when eating my snacks?
Yes you will have to take them off or you could damage your retainer/stain it
@@Ix3299 common sense! I didn’t even think of damaging it. Now I’m embarrassed. Thank you Omar.
