- When food is involved in a movie or TV show, food stylists are often hired to make sure food looks good and fresh on screen, and that there is enough for endless takes. Food stylist Zoe Hegedus showed us how she did this in 2019's "Midsommar." Over the course of production, she had to bake over 100 of the film's signature pies, and even have fresh fish flown from France to Hungary for a pivotal scene. That's a day in the life of a food stylist.

What It Takes To Be A Food Stylist For Movies And TV Shows | Movies Insider - Розваги
Damn imagine the people that worked for the harry potter meal scenes
The first movie was a nightmare for the food stylists because the director insisted on using real food for all the feasts, and they would take days to shoot. In the later movies, a lot of the food was just props.
I read that on the first movie, they had to sew the actor's robe pockets shut because they were eating so much food and stashing it in their pockets.
@Devon Counterman they had to sew Tom Felton's (aka Draco) robe because he kept sneaking food onto the set.
Al least they could use magic!
None of ya’ll have been on sets ill take it
Clearly you guys dont know wht ur talking about
I never realized that it was such a big job
me either
Bit of chemistry ahahah
why are you EVERYWHERE
*YOUR EVERYWHERE*
YOUR EVERYWHERE BRO
Sounds like an annoying job. Hope they pay them well
They dont, they get paid 1 dollar a month. Sometimes 5, depending how good. But, not paid lots.

@Linh Gia Nguyen I was joking LMFAO I'm not sure
@Gas Lighting Queen nah more than that

Narrator speaks as if the period keeps catching him off guard after every sentence.
It's so cringe
Lmaoo
Loreta Zariņa I thought he didn’t sound that bad? He’s like any other narrator, plus I didn’t even notice it. I mean be in his shoes literally narrating for millions of people. I bet you’d be worse, dumbass; like seriously *why on earth would people think this* why are there humans like you 🙄🤦♀️😫. Like stop attacking him people!
At 00:45 when he says "they are the biggest problem solvers you never think about" sounded like a question or like he was cut off
@@blehblehbleh2714 it's not like he's on a stage, reading everything in front of a crowd. He's in a proper recording environment. Somebody went over the final product, and thought to themselves: "Yep. This is the natural cadence of human speech."
Don't let actual criticism be curbed by your definition of an "attack".
this narrator sounds like he’s reading an early high school persuasive essay when he makes videos i’m sorry
I like how he sounds.
Kenny Watcher same
It's like he's never ending his sentence. His pauses are so awkward.
He's definitely reading, as there are some grammar errors that rarely happen when speaking normally
to me he kinda sounds like the burger king foot lettuce guy lmao
Why does he kinda sound like the foot lettuce guy but more professional?
Rosi Napp EXACTLY MY THOUGHT
The foot lettuce guy is chills

"Which looked like a man laying in apples"
That is a woman lying in pears....

You can see few apples
the person reporting on this doesn't seem experienced
lol I came here to comment that
Lmao it literally has breasts how did he get that wrong?😂😂
Everyone is complaining about how they pronounce Midsommar, but why is no one talking about how they had crayfish for midsommar. Like dude, midsommar is in june and crayfish season is in august.
I’m an actress and we were filming a commercial on the beach. They used mash potatoes to make ice cream with sprinkles on it.
Sounds weird
@Nyan nyasemaru yea
Why don’t they just bring out actual ice cream during the final take? 👩🏾
christy capers bruh
So how does mashed potatoes & sprinkles taste?
makes you think what other minute details in films that went into so much thought process and rigorous and extensive efforts to perfect..like that basket of apples in that background which were shown for like a blurry second
When I was little I would always get mad at the characters for wasting food like just getting up and leaving for school or work when their mom or wife had this whole giant delicious looking breakfast all laid out for the family and everyone only just like grabbed a piece of toast, an apple, or a quick sip of coffee and ran out. I was just like what the heck?! They better not waste all that good food. Now I realize though that it might not have all been edible or all taste as good as it looked.
Maia Sheard made me mad too! Hahaha
That is me as a kid! 😆🤣😂
Well at least if I didn't finish my food, I bring it to my car so that I can finish it. I'm also a fan of no-food-waste
I've read for the local TV of my city, actors always keep eating rice without picking any food from the shared dishes in the dinner scene because it tastes really bad lol
Dove Nightingale imagine watching a movie and 15 minutes of the movie is the actors eating... they do that because you have to focus on the story of the show or movie.
This is incredible.. I would have never thought that food in films takes THIS amount of work! I hope food stylists are paid handsomely, because this is arduous work.
First off... I'm Swedish and I've been celebrating midsommar all my life and none of the food is right in the movie. Yes we some of the ingredients are right but it's all in the wrong season.
What we do eat on midsommar is a fresh harvest of potatoes, pickled harring (not raw), cured salmon, snaps ( a type of liquor) and strawberry cake witch fresh strawberrys.
The crawfish is a another thing, a whole other feast with only crawfish, cheese pie and snaps (liquor)
And a pigs head on midsommar is so bad... You would never slaughter pigs that early on the year. But on Christmas we have julbord and there we eat alot of pork, and pickled harring and potatoes.
All of this and these foods are just a Google away... I don't know what and where the researched this...
Too bad they recjected the strawberry cake because it looked modern, not because it fits the season as you mentioned before
it's all for the rustic aesthetic they don't care about being culturally accurate
Btw is sweden midsummer festival just as the movie? Tell me plz i need to know
@@fahmidsadat1443 No not even close
It is a horror movie so the food had to also look upsetting in some manner, and serve the narrative. I don't really approve of the portrayals ive seen in this video
"mid-sohm-ahr" hahahaha what
shane vendrell hahahha
I died a little when he said that
Sämsta uttalet någonsin
That’s how the director and commercials pronounce it.
@@erikjohansson2703 Verkligen!! Hemskt!
Why does the narrator sound like he's questioning everything he says...
Crayfish is very typically swedish food yes, but they are never eaten during midsommar. The crayfish season starts in august and eating crayfish before that used to be against swedish law. Not anymore though, but still, never crayfish on midsommar!
I feel like there should be AWARDS for this type of work, OSCAR for best food styling in a movie.
I believe thats part of set design, right?
I worked on a kids show and I was once send out to find 10 heart shaped potatoes. I went to a ton of stores and it took me half a day of looking through bulk potato bins. Some of my other favourites have been making crepes for 11 hours straight and taking bites from 40 apples then spitting them into a bucket and covering them in lemon juice to make a pile of apple cores

So that is why films have such large budgets
yeah large budgets for OCD film directors, they could have cut their budget in half if they werent that picky on the smallest things 95% of people won't even notice.
I work on movies and TV shows as a chef for talent and crew. The food stylist is usually part of the props department and comes to grab real food from the chefs and from craft services quite often. Things change and go wrong quite often so this job requires lots of thinking on the spot like all production jobs.
"It needed to be traditionally swedish"
Proceeds to show a tower of raw asparagus and a giant pie shaped like a man
I hate to break it to you...
None of the food is traditional for Midsommer celebrations
I lived in sweden all my life and have never heard of that cake-man-thing. And wtf with the asparagus? We only eat in in fall because that’s when its asparagus season
This movie was very interesting. Very deep, lot to think about. Watching the bts of this movie is actually fascinating, so much attention to detail.
I'm sure this isn't the only movie where food stylists had a hard time...then again preparing the same thing over and over again should drive you nuts especially when the director in play is a nut job.
I’m Swedish and have never had any of this for midsummer 😅😂. Only even recognized some of the recipes from the book...
I'd love to see a behind the scenes of the food in Little Women!
These days barely not even one video on UA-cam tells me something absolutely new or something I have not thought about but THIS VIDEO DID.
Great video. But the freaking “MidSommAAAr” pronunciation is irritating
MID SOM AAARRR
that is the (more or less) correct pronounciation though.full disclosure: i'm not swedish... maybe someone can clarify?
Chrstnera No, the correct way to pronounce it is MID-SOMM-ar
idk in the movie they just said midsummer
marika m That’s because they are speaking English, the title of the film is in Swedish though.
How amazing is this? Her job is dealing, preparing, being around food all day long! (Of course it has to be perfect and of course it is extremely hard but..)
Wow❤.
I can't believe that it's amazing. I love food stylist
Would love to see more on this. Other movies/TV shows/commercials...
Wow. Answered the clickbait question in 30 seconds then delivered quality content
SOLID
As a food stylist I can just imagine the amount of research, experience and technique that must have gone into this project. Kudos Zoey! You've done some amazing work 😍❤️
perfect timing i JUST watched midsommar!!
In Bollywood films if u try to go for such perfection they will probably say - "Nobody is going to look at the stupid food, they are here for the HERO/ BHAI!"...! Hats off to your perfectionism and hard work !
I love this kind of stuff, it's so cool
Oh- I thought that this was made a long time ago- XD
Awesome vid though!
I got to do this back in filmschool. A lot of fun !
they imported fish from France just so the actress would later spit it out on the floor...BRILLIANT
amazing job, but ... I'm a swede that do traditional recipes during holidays.. none of those dishes are traditionally swedish
i always think about the food in movies/shows, always.
CocaineJayy same here!
Adriana Santiago yes ! wyf?
Everything needs to be authentic! We won't settle for less!!
Films in Hungary
All I can think about is all the wasted food 😭
But this is SUPER interesting!!! Love info like this
In Hungary you can buy imperfect looking apples in the supermarket. Honestly, those looked too perfect to me still because the apples were approximately the same size.
The food artist on Marie Antoinette must have been amazing. That movie is filled with food.
Am I the only one who internally screeched when they showed that slice of cake being thrown out?
This is so cool
Where does all the food waste go? What a waste -- even if it's fascinating to see what goes into the production. :(
Im guessing it goes to feeding the cast and crew after the cameras are off anyway.
@A M the whole point is that it stays nice and edible for an extended period of time tho
@A M still, doesnt make food inedible to have been talked over
@A M eh I guess, not everyone tho, so prolly fed it to cast and crew.
@A M hell ye
How did i not know that this masterpiece was filmed in my country????? I was suprised to hear the chef's name too.
1:58 I wanted her to talk about the period blood infused lemonade and pubic hair meat pie.
If you’re using a couple sprits of water to shine apples, and it’s 100+ degrees outside, doesn’t it just evaporate?
It comes back as rain so it spritzes back on the apples again
They probably had to re-sprit the apples every once in a while
I just loved florences reaction after spitting the fish out
Omg I JUST saw Midsommar this morning and I am going to college to become a good stylist so this is terrifying that it came out today or at all period 😳😂

Excellent video 👏👍👌
Wow she is genius🤩🤩
it's kinda weird to see the upload date being 2020 of this video ^^

So what the right way of pronouncing?
Arcanjo Miguel it’s closer to midsoMMar, but an american would never be able to pronounce it correctly anyways ;)
@@TheMalletralle oh i kind of got it im not an native speaker so thanks
Haring is very common in Sweden but the little flags in the shot are dutch
6:14 "Shaped like a man lying in apples" with breasts.
Lmao I know right?
crazy how much time and energy is spent in things we dont even pay that much attention to when watching a movie
This...Is so much work...
I'm Swedish and I have never ever heard someone butcher the word midsommar like this guy does. I did not think it was possible to get it wrong.
The video is basically how you place *_E G G S_*
Lol I didn't even notice taht egg yolk when I watched the movie but it fits in so well with the pagan theme, that's now intricate movie making is love it!:)
Food stylists are very creative :)
Your explanation for why you believe they used the real herring being that Florence would "act better" completely undermines the fact she's a skilled performer. You don't need it to be real to act. That's the point.
It most likely handled better than a prop and only the authentic fish was acceptable for the same reasons as other foods.
The way you said ”midsomm ahr” broke my Ikea heart
I live in Hungary and I didn't even know aout this!
People who aren’t From
Louisiana: “CRAY-fish”
Louisianians : what the heck is that
Sofia ASB how to people from there say it
Skinny Legend But the attention to detail makes a good movie. You can’t always pay attention to the details but you can always spot imperfections or errors within a movie
minted erm I think you got the wrong comment
Skinny Legend There was another comment before yours saying how producers can cut down budgets but I think they might have deleted it ? Anyway sorry for getting you involved but I swear that I tagged them...

Hollywood fx makers are real artists !
What this video did is make me want to watch that horror movie.
I love horror movies but this one has probably scared me for life... it's _very_ traumatizing :)

I love her hair 💖👍
Please. Don’t pronounce midsommar like that. I don’t think I can take it anymore
Niamh C that’s.....how the Swedish say it....... it’s not spelled MidSUMMER
Jack Doherty I know but if you can’t speak Swedish then don’t try and say it like that. Hearing all these Americans butcher it is so painful. It’s like over-pronouncing Parmesan
Niamh C ok I was gonna be a dick but that Parmesan reference actually makes sense so....,
I digress, I accept defeat. Well done sir.
Jack Doherty wow this is the first and only time I’ve ever won an argument on the internet. Fair play
It’s like an american saying “par-ee” instead of Paris. It’s cringe.
I hope they give the leftovers to people that really need it
Nicole Isabel Villena Bustillos pretty sure the food was thrown away because it was spoiled from the shooting and weather
That's a good sentiment, but the amount of food waste in film is minuscule compared to food waste in the restaurant and grocery industries.
Shout out to stylists that wiped the sweat off the actors and actress faces. Lol that movie probably had someone paid just be on sweat controll.
Do you guys have apples fresh from the trees in June in Sweden? Because in Finland we don't.
Very cool job
i literally yelled "noooo" when they threw out the cake😭
This is such an important aspect of movie making that barely gets any attention. Food stylists need to be so creative and diligent, it's really impressive. But damn, I feel pretty sad about the all the food waste that must result from movie/TV productions.
0:12 i didnt even know what it was and wouldn’t care tbh😂💀
Damn it’s like a dream job nightmare
I have never seen anything this fancy at my midsummer festival
Crawfish towers sound pretty delicious, they should be brought down to Louisiana XD
Why did the guys look like they wanted to vomit when they were eating the meat pies?
They just saw two people die before that scene.
Also, the guy who took a bite of it finds a pubic hair in it
And they're oat meal.
I do not like how he pronounced midsommar, idk why it makes me sudder >~
The director pronounces it that way sometimes so a lot of people think that's how it's pronounced.
Yeah it makes me shudder too. Sometimes a little more than just a sudder 😉
I used to wonder as a kid why food looked terrible in pictures at diners, but looked fine on TV lol. Food is hard to take pictures of.
we have a lot of foods that we usally eat on midsommar in sweden and none of them was in this movie.
Wew, Insider is an ad god
everyone needs to watch midsommar
I love how innocent they made Midsommar seem
Have you seen the film? Things get pretty fucked up

Why
0:43 what movie is that?
I can’t get over how the way he says “midsommar” sound like hmm... almost like a Middle Eastern first and last name (Mid Zamar)? 😹
The pronunciation is not the absolute worst but I did not recognise the word at first.
That is probably the original pronunciation from sweden, right
