How 5 Movie Props Are Made To Be Eaten | Movies Insider

- Prop makers frequently have to make props that aren’t just handled, but consumed by an actor. Food stylists like Melissa McSorley have to replicate an object’s true properties while making something safe to eat. Typical prop blood can be safe to put around an actor’s mouth is small qualities, but in HBO’s “True Blood,” the characters had to consume a lot of blood, meaning her concoction had to go far beyond red juice. She also found ways to replicate the viscosity of blood. McSorley used cleverly disguised dates to imitate a live cockroach for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and made edible maggots from scratch for Netflix’s “Daybreak,” so she wouldn’t harm any actual live maggots.

How Edible Props Are Made For Movies & TV | Movies Insider - Фільми й анімація
I thought all cockroaches were edible. What have I been eating all this time?
Don't worry , she's lying
@@jillianchen1108 Mostly Americans? I think that eating cockroaches occurs the most in Asia.
To be honest, not every cockroach are edible... Some are clean and some are dirty full of harmful bacteria... But no need to worry cockroach are actually the cleanest insect in the jungle because they clean themself... The household cockroach are very dirty... There are more than 4600 species of cockroaches and some are very clean and other are very dirty, you would die if you eat the dirty one
I bet you are south East Asian
Everything is technically edible, but some things only once.
It really looks convincing because despite me knowing the fact that those aren't real. It still creeps me out to see them eat it.
😂
Yes, that's when you know the illusion is very well done
Man the cockroach at the start looked fake cause typically cockroaches are kinda long in length but the fake one used in the video wasn't long but was
*THICC*

Everyone gangsta until they suddenly eat real cockroach
So to be clear, food stylist heard their parents say "don't play with your food" and then laughed in their faces
It’s more working with your food. They found the loophole.

OMG, does this lady have a kid’s cooking site? My grandkids would TOTALLY LOVE to make maggots, cockroaches and poop snacks!

I have some poop to sell, mate
You seem like a fun grandpa sir ☺️
@@yasik9382 THANKS! I sure try.
(I really do. I actually try to be the best grandpa, grandma, dad and mom I can since our Gigi went to heaven. Sadly she was flying our second oldest granddaughter, six year old Elise, to meet her great-great grandfather when her plane crashed near Salt Lake City last June, so our family needs all the love we can get.)
@@scottaseigel5715 Sorry to hear about your loss. You're a super grandpa
This is truly an underrated Hollywood job, as a viewer you never consider long filming hours/multiple takes could affect the food in a scene and the food stylist had to research for substitutes. As for the gross stuff made edible, that's even more impressive lol she had to be an impromptu scientist and research how cockroaches look like, how a plant-eating monster poop would look lmao, so interesting
As someone who loves films and has OCD... I always pay attention and think about these things 🤭😝
I heard the food on the Harry Potter set was disgusting bc they used real food so throughout the days of shooting it would go bad.
Makes me wonder if film crew hate Paul Dano lol
@@blueeyedbatman i wish i was as cool as you
Man me. Man
Now THAT is detail. I've raised chickens, and I hate to find unlaid eggs inside, but it happens. And yes, like on an assembly line, they range in size and color depending on how close they are to being eggs. All yolk, all edible.
Unlaid eggs taste good. In fact, they are quite expensive in my country.
what exactly is an unlaid egg I'm curious
@Ivar Mf be eating eat yolks then putting 😭 when they see unlaid egg.
Fr they're actually less of a chicken than an actual laid egg.
@Ivar bro if you dont know anything about it, dont reply.
They taste like normal eggs but more chewy.
@Ivar that emoji I was unnecessary. Have you ever eaten or even seen an unlaid egg? People don’t eat it raw either, it’s usually boiled with the chicken.
2:22 wasted opportunity to say "it was bLoOdY good!"
i'm also a phlebotomist, and can attest to how realistic and accurate that blood looks. i was a bit blown away at how realistic it was
It looks great in the bottle; in the glasses, not so much. As real blood drips down, the film left behind is kind of yellowish, it's not a uniform red like that. But I guess people expect blood in a vampire show to look bright red.
Eating and drinking all those props were fun! I ate one of her fake poops in a TikTok after the shoot and it was flagged lol.
Oh poop… that’s sucks Joe 😅🤣🤣
That is how you know it is realistic 🤣
Oh jeez, it's the real him, this needs to be pinned, also hi Joe Avella
Like Bill Murray eating the Baby Ruth in Caddyshack? Doodie!
🤣🤣🤣
this vid was great and informative, plus the interviewer was hilarious lol. thanks for showing Melissa McSorley's work, it's cool seeing how much detail goes into prop food
thanks!
@@JoeAvella was very funny in last scene when you eat and say - like a brownie 🤣😁👍
Thanks for taking the time to watch!
You have a very dry sense of humor
@@TastyMeat8675 humor is subjective
In Hannibal they had a scene where they were eating a rare delicousy called ortolan which is a baby bird cooked and eaten whole. Obviously nobody wants to eat a whole cooked baby bird, (and also there are some ethics concerns uh-) so the props team made fake ortolan out of marzipan and raw spaghetti noodles for the legs
there are obviously people who would want to eat baby birds otherwise it wouldn't be a delicacy
@@cipreste my teacher in elementary bragged about catching small and baby birds to eat with nets even though it's illegal where we live.
I’m so glad a Hannibal related thing popped up! That show is just amazing with food (obviously)
My Vietnamese teacher told me this was a delicacy in her country too... And I looked her and said that was more than a little morally wrong for me, and she just laughed and said it was delicious...
Yikes
@@PoptartParasol It is delicious, I'll eat my next ortolan and think of you
She surely did a perfect job with the dates
When I was little I lived in a place where cockroaches are pretty big and sometimes if I opened a door in the night a roach could come inside and walk over my feet. I remembered that so clearly that I was seriously scared and disgusted about eating dates because the texture and shape are so similar. Even to this day it's still a bit hard for me not to think I'm eating a cockroach, the only dates I'm okay with eating now are the darker round and soft ones from Tunisia.
Where I am, we use red dates so they are red and look fresher. I have never seen a brown dried date until today in this video and was impressed.
@@blueraineee Oh interesting, I've never heard of red dates, do they taste different than other dates?
It's amazing how much certain completely-harmless veggie foods can resemble unfortunate parts of the animal kingdom!! 🤭 I have a similar problem with uncooked black rice - even when I KNOW I just poured some out of the container, seeing a grain lying around anywhere still immediately triggers the reaction "Yikes, mouse poop!".... 🙈
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 yes exactly!!! Even if you know it's just food your body reacts with disgust

As nearsighted, I almost grab a cockroach and put it into dates container. Then, I ran as it was flying towards me. So, she spot on with the resemblance.
That must’ve been very traumatic
Oh god 🥲
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I am also near sighted
And once ate an old piece of meat when I thought it was a chocolate chip I dropped.

I love learning about this stuff that you don’t think about in movies! It’s so cool to think and learn about how creativity can be shown and displayed in so many different forms! It’s all different art forms coming together to make something super cool that may be on screen for 30 seconds as just a prop!! Amazing.
Foley art is amazing too, if you haven’t learned about that then go check it out :)

@@mohdghazali3473 braen fard
Right! She could do recreations of past movie props too.
This is so awesome. I mean, it must be difficult to be an actor and actually eat any or even hold any of these. The human body is so smart that our eyes recognizes something and the brain sends signals to the rest of the body saying: dont do this, this is bad. Is a natural response to run away from a disgusting or dangerous situation, even though we as an audience and the actors know that they are gonna be ok after the shoot, even thought we know and they know anything that they do infront of the camera is real, and they have to sell the emotions so we can translate them and feel disgust, danger or pleasure. This is really the secret behind movie magic.
its like what he said the brain telling him that its bigsfoots black rocks, but when he eats it hes brain is like oh its like a brownie
I know my animal brain would struggle to eat the fake poop lol
There was this episode of brainchild or something I think we’re some kids were given normal food disguised as disgusting things such as moldy pizza cat litter and a dirty diaper and even though the food was perfectly safe and good to eat all of the kids felt really grossed out and nauseated simply because of what it looked like
Imagine you go to her house for a party or something, see a cockroach on the kitchen counter and you put it in your mouth thinking it was one of her creations when that thing starts running around in your mouth
I would like to unsee that

Yes on the viscosity of blood! That is a pet peeve of mine in movies!
2:36 did NOT expect to see my favourite show of all time in this list
This was really interesting. Just wish videos like this, would explain how it is someone gets into this line of work....same with prop masters, stand ins, or even casting directors. They seem like such cool jobs to have, but it's really not something you go to school for. There's no "casting" degrees, so really curious how people end up in that position.
Me too. As I was watching,I was thinking the same thing. There are quite a few jobs I have wondered how people got them bc there's no specific degree or training course to be take.
I'm only going under an assumption here that these food stylist professionals may have an initial background in culinary courses, since presentation is also an important factor in being a chef. The latter I'm assuming they come from various art courses, and the rest to get into specific movie stuff is a matter of creativity and connections.
There are courses and degrees all over the world. Look into stagecraft, props and manufacturing. As well as art.
@@KimberleyBianca yea, most people don't know about these things, bc we're usually fed the basic college type jobs like doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. Stuff like that. The minor stuff you have to search out.
I've been working as an SFX techie for some 16-17 years now, I got into the business through a friend who knew someone that had already made special effects for a number of years. So, he introduced me to this guy, I started helping out in the shop and ended up being hired. It should be said that I've always been inventing and building stuff, and I've worked as a professional pyrotechnician for 10 years, so my background is 50/50 self-taught/education. At the time I was hired, I was already working on some effects for another friend who went to film school. I think most people in this line of work, get into it as a result of their interests, and sort of gravitate towards companies that do this kind of work. People who mess around with latex, silicone, and epoxy as a hobby develop a certain combination of skills you can't really find anywhere else. The "problem" you might call it, is that it can be hard to find a regular job if you for some reason all of the sudden find yourself unemployed, I did at one point because the company went down due to poor leadership, and it's remarkable how many people won't hire someone with as diverse a skill set like mine, because once they hear what you've been doing before, they assume you'll get bored after a few weeks or months, and leave. I reckon there might be some truth to that, I rarely have two days alike, and I get to use my hands as much as my head, often solving unusual problems nobody has really had to solve before, or solved before successfully. Not a whole lot of people can say that.
As a kid I wanted to get into either SFX, or the demining business, but as I grew up, I found out most demining companies preferred people with a military background, and as I'm really bad at taking orders, the military wasn't for me. To be honest, I think I'm happier where I am, ok, clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance would be hilarious, but I think it'd get boring in the long run. If memory serves, the deminers that get hurt on the job, have statistically been at it for 17 years, on either side of the 17-year mark, the number of accidents decreases for some reason, so there seems to be a certain level of complacency people tend to develop, and I can only conclude that is because they no longer feel the need to stay sharp.
I was a former phlebotomist! I could totally work with her when it comes to blood props. 😂

This was totally awesome, seeing things eaten that disgust really made out of food. Now I don't have to do so grossed out when seeing such scenes in movies. Amazon, car hop trays.
When people write these scenes, are they aware of the work that goes into making them actually possible
If you have no budget then yeah, cause you have to avoid all of that:'D
The guys that write the scenes probably not, the director and the executive producer however are KEENLY aware of how much work and money will go into a scene. One expensive scene can make or break a film.
It depends. Sometimes yes, sometimes not. In films budget is often less of an obstacle to the creative writing, but in television writers are usually more aware of their budgetary restrictions when writing. It also depends on how closely the writers are working with the show. In house writers and staff writers are more aware of the budget and practical limitations than external writers and guest writers. And sometimes the producers specifically request certain kinds of scripts based on the budget limits (usually it's "write cheaply", but sometimes it is "we have the budget, write big").
I mean it’s a beautiful hobby but they can actually eat bugs like they are edible and can taste good…
I respect her hard work and dedication.

And there's always more to learn

I remember being in fourth grade and I thought it was the funniest thing in the world to squeeze a couple brownies together and roll it into a poop shape. I even brought one to school for lunch one time. And I used to wonder why I was always alone at recess.
the most disturbing thing about this was that I learned someone made a bigfoot movie that involved people eating his poop
But didn't they say it was the Judy Moody movie
I love watching behind the scenes.........I wish they had programs that just do that! I would be glued to the tv!
I used to make cat litterbox cakes and used tootsie rolls for the poop. It was amazing how it grossed some people out enough that they could not eat it.
Practical effects, props, and makeup and costume are my favourite hollywood behind the sceens things to look into. It's so fascinating to watch people transform into a monster or watch as props are built or as an effect is set up.
