One of the coolest panels imo. Everything done here gives me hope about the overall future of the game (as well as the Planet Tech V4 panel which isn't released here yet). They've found a way to make the economy feel alive and real, giving "side quests" that are dynamically generated. I had always questioned how CiG was going to handle that; missions and economy. But they addressed those issues here, and it's truly exciting to know this will be implemented fully one day.
Yeah I didn't expect to enjoy something as backend as this. It's encouraging to see how far along they are on something that has ostensibly 0% to do with Squadron 42.

Tony totally delivered here. Now please buy more ships... Because if you do, there will be less ships available in the dynamic ecosystem. Therefore a new demand for aluminum will be created at mining outposts, DYNAMICALLY! And after that new demand will be created at ship factories. They will dynamically create new ships for you, so that you can buy more of them. If you do, there will be new demand for more resources! It just works.
Who hasn't been on game credits for a released game since 1996! And here we are, 4 years later, and none of this is actually in game yet. He hasn't done anything significant in all his time at CIG.

This is why I'm here, I really want to see the more living breathing universe side of Star Citizen, this is what will get me to play this game for many many years over the other space games like No Man's Sky that get too repetitive. A must watch of this year's convention. Those tools are really going to be powerful. The beginning is a bit slow though (I had hard times to stay focused while watching at the convention), but when he starts showcasing the tools it's really interesting so don't stop.

Still watching this months later. Best Panel I've seen. Literally helped me figure out my gaming loop. I would also love this Quantum tool as a standalone tool to play around with to test different gaming scenarios
I'm so impressed by SC to date. Every 12 months I check in and this time round I was shocked. I get the impression this production is soon to move into something never experienced before. I can see why so much time has been spent on the underlying systems and tech. Hat off to CIG, once again.

Thank you for this impressive insight! The panels are all very awesome but this really showed the potential and underlined the possibility for this whole thing to work. On the same note, it gives an idea of how fast future star systems can be build. I guess we will all see an ongoing increase in speed and quality. As a backer since early 2013 I can truly say, that I have enjoyed the journey with CIG and cherish every moment!

@@Dowlphin EVE has nothing like this. EVE is 100% player driven, and the Dev's do exactly what Tony doesn't want to do: manually edit where resources spawn/rarity and manufacturing locations/rarity in response to imbalances in the game economy.
@Synthmilk - True, there are lots of differences. - Well, and as far as interference goes, the devs take part in the in-universe power play, which is kinda like owning a horse racing arena, organizing races and then having an own horse in the race. I always found that CCP are people who never get tired burning ants with magnifying glasses. And long after getting that vibe I watched a documentary where they further solidified that impression. I don't like how contemporary Star Citizen is in its reflection of the world, but EVE is like a vision of a terrible future. (Or just an openly cynical present?)
To be completely fair, they could make a sim/manager game with this system alone. Plus I'd love to be able to log onto Quantum and see all of the live players in-game and see what they're doing.
Combine this game with the Stellaris empire /4x grand strategy, and add in the logistical management of Factorio, and then you will have the greatest game in history.
People gonna complain about their privacy at that point, lol. Especially criminals, or someone being harassed by other players. There is also org wars, that is a very powerful tool for anyone involved.

This is by far the best panel and the best piece of tech that is in line with CR vision and ours! There was no side step just a difficulty problem that CR wanted solved and instead of trying to change the game or system to something easier. He evolved and stood up to the challenge at hand, creating Quantum. We have to many lazy game developers nowadays, this man is not one of them! My hates off to you mate :)

What's so fascinating about this is start imagining your are one of those quantums. You could be the miner, or the hauler, or the pirate, or the security. You could also be a salvager going out to those conflict areas which is what I find fascinating.
This talk was incredible, however quite a few people around me were convinced this was happening live on a server in the PU til about halfway through the presentation which was funny.
A Star Citizen 4X-RTS game? Count me in! The 4X of Stellaris + the space battles of Star Wars Empire at War + the ground combat of Company of Heroes or Supreme Commander = instant buy
"This game should be done already. Why haven't they finished it yet? What's taking so long?" If videos like this don't answer those questions for people, they don't deserve Star Citizen, because they don't truly understand the amount of effort that goes into making this level of game... I remember being blown away in like 1992 or 1993 when I was 5 or 6 years old that NPCs in Ultima VI went to the tavern to eat during the morning or evening, inbetween they'd take strolls throughout town and at night they'd retreat to their unique and private residence to goto sleep. Simulations like this take concepts like Richard Garriott used back in the day to a whole new level.
Interesting to showcase the economic simulation. Way more interesting than the standard old presentation of artwork, music production and mocap sessions.

Business schools using this to teach students about free markets in 2025. Altering small imputs, and analyzing the resultant output in a visual and easy to compare way. A near-perfect free market simulation. I swear the amount of R&D CIG is putting into the game is unparalleled, and IMO will change gaming forever.

Will the quanta leave the ship while buying/selling or it will be just an instant operation (land+buy/sell)? Since the NPC ships should be carrying cargo boxes 'physically' so the content can be stollen by a player.
You can use this type of gameplay to tell a lot of stories from the lore, you can even do things like rescue scenarios, attack and boarding of a pirate base and so much more. You could even have certain places offer reenactment scenarios for prizes where the goal is to solve the mission. It gives you the option to create a ton of mini games within the game. It can also be used as a type of interactive movie hosted on different space stations, best of all you can launch time limited event happening in real time and then later add it to the stories being retold.

So let me get this straight. Quanta works like units in an RTS, where you gotta have workers to do the mining/building for the production of other units and buildings.
One thing that comes to mind when watching the quanta reacting to new resources is the lack of information assymmetry. This is a key factor in any real economy. The quanta in this simulation seem to all react immediately with the same course of action when a resource appears. In real life, economic actors have information and knowledge of varying qualities and their actions will therefore differ. The number of individuals acting perfectly rational according to the reality of the world is probably pretty low at any given time.
in SC, data is also a commodity. Some ships are dedicated to that role ("data runners"). And information is travelling at light speed once broadcasted (meaning it's not meant to be transmitted in the whole universe all at once).
there is a space sim called X4:rebiirth that also simulates an actual economy throughout solar systems. i have no idea how this system and the x4 system compare though.

Stellaris economy is a way way way very way more complex and sofisticated than this tool. But, that's a really good start.

there is a space sim called X4:rebiirth that also simulates an actual economy throughout solar systems. i have no idea how this system and the x4 system compare though.
