@EmEm At large number of the backend systems and services TonyZ described or mentioned are relevant to SQ42, because they allow for direct and indirect modification of AI and NPCs in response to player actions... so rather than e.g. CIG explicitly coding up two different mission results ('success' and 'failure'), they can now configure impacts from various actions - so the game *could* (potentially) respond differently depending on *how* you failed etc... Of course, I'm speculating here - but it would fit with CIG / CRs overall desire, and it reduces the amount of bespoke coding to try and cover every possible scenario (and the impact of a single change and needing to recode a bunch of scenarios, etc)... Lastly, the use of v-NPCs for all the crew on the capital ships etc (when you're not actively viewing them) will greatly reduce the processing load on your machine when you're playing - which will be a big improvement.
Painfully slow for sure, but put into context of the work being done, it's about as fast as I'd reasonably expect any other AAA company to develop it, although "reasonably" is definitely down to interpretation.
@@EappleSandbox I think people misuse the word "slow" when talking about SC's development. It's not necessarily slow, it's just that the imagined final product is so complex and huge that it takes an incredible amount of time. You can be the fastest runner in the world but if the track is thousands of kilometers long, it'll still take you a long amount of time. Whether or not they should have chosen to make such a huge game is another discussion entirely, though.
@Solve Everything: likely performance saving. They won’t be permanent AI like trading/hauling AI. Seeing as they’ll live very short single purpose lives. Ending in death to players or security.
@Solve Everything, best way to explain it. If no real player is in the same area of space, all NPC's will become digital ghosts, however will retain all deeds as a record(good/bad). Will continue that way until killed or captured. This way not as taxing on the servers and thus offers increased performance for all real players.
No, this video is way way way to early and meaningless to everyone who gets 30k crashes and horrendous frame rate drops, which is majority of us. This video would be justified in about five years from now, after the game is actually a game and running smoothly.
@Solve Everything Seems like it depends on whether it's an action v-npc that was in the area and you actually met them, or if there were no v-npcs nearby, but 'probability' said you should meet a pirate, so the system spins up a 'temporary pirate' just so you have someone to fight. In that latter scenario, once you leave the area, the temporary pirate is no longer required, so the server just deletes it.
@Solve Everything Quantum, Persistence/Death of a Spaceman, Server Meshing,... So much awesome stuff to look forward to, even if it's still going to take a few years.

Imagine loosing your entire freight-fortune to a pirate-npc, then later bumping into him in a bar where he's spending it all on hookers and blow... way to twist the knife lol
This is so so sooo much more interesting than PvP, or scripted missions. The idea of a sandbox that evolves such as this will allow, is a new level of open world.
I'm worried about them trying to manipulated PVP zones. If eve was anything to go by, it will naturally clean itself up. CCP had to try to manipulate player factions into more wars at one point.
This has the potential to make star citizen the coolest and craziest game out there. I'm really excited to see how this moves from concept to reality to see how we the players can interact with this system. The living universe of star citizen is finally starting to gain shape and we can see the light at the end of this long tunnel. I am pretty excited!

THIS is how you make replayability. This game will never get old with stuff like this. You'll have pirate lords that will rise naturally and areas that get dangerous, gold rushes that spawn missions that spiral into other missions.
Dear CIG, We are in for the long run with you, as long as you provide us with Information like this. Be transparent and the development process will be enjoyed and supported by the community. Thank you.
CiG please put out more videos like this. We do hear alot of things about complicated systems but showing things like this encourage the player base to keep going and be willing to test these systems as they come online. Keep it up.
Ah man this is what I needed to hear. All of this was freaking cathartic. It's ticking all the world building boxes I've been begging for in sandbox games (and games in general tbh).
I'm a backer since January 2014 I have never lost faith in SC, because I know the alternative, CIG is not run by a publisher which would have killed this project long ago. CIG has coded all their development tools from scratch so they have to be tested before they can advertise them. This is why Star Citizen is taking so long to develop. Tony Z is brilliant as always!
I started being a Citizen about a month ago, so I'm still new to the universe and the way the developers work and share. But it's insane how open and how much info we can get from you guys. This is the way games should be developed and shared with their communities. I have no regrets joining this journey, in fact... I'm disappointed I never took this leap of faith sooner. Keep it up, very excited for the future! O7
So while watching this video I feel like I'm being informed in an effective and efficient way !!! Thank you CIG for making a video using this kind of presentation as I feel you actually may value our time as viewers just trying to get the latest information. they will draw "its feature creep, nobody wanted this in 2012". meanwhile forgetting what kind of game was pitched and what kind of man was behind the project... imo, nobody should be surprised that this project is what it is now. it is in line with what it always wanted to be.
@Solve Everything I don't doubt that for a second, it more a at some point you got to release or do a full rebuild for the new tech and standards thats creeped up on you. and i just don't see this releasing in the next ten years due to everything they are doing with it.
Tony Z is a gem. Detailed descriptions of incredibly complex tasks summarised concisely and succinctly and in a manner that even someone who has zero knowledge of the matter can understand it. He doesn't mince words, he goes straight to the point and I felt 40 minutes whizz by just like it was nothing. Wish my profs at uni were that engaging. :D Very interesting video and phenomenal tech demonstration!
Thanks for taking the time to put together such a detailed presentation/explanation regarding Quantum. The impact of a fully functional and realized Quantum system is immense, injecting the verse with a truly virtual 'breath of life'. I am looking forward to a fully functional Quantum system more than any other feature in Star Citizen (with server meshing right next to it).
This is without a doubt the best star citizen update video I’ve ever seen. Real stats, timelines, and an in depth explanation of how it changes and evolves.
Tony's talk on Quanta and the inner workings of Star Citizen was the most fascinating of CitizenCon 2019. The work gone into this floors me every time. Simply amazing.
I have been a backer for a long time. And this video just brought me back in a major way. THIS was the explanation I needed for a deeper understanding of where the game is... rather than piecing together bits from reddit, youtube, facebook, spectrum etc... this broke everything down and put it back together perfect! Thank you!
While every other US company releases toddler-level cartoons to "explain" things, we get this. I love you, Tony! Never change! This was exactly what we needed.
Getting such a detailed and understandable explanation about the basic mechanics and the current state is very much appreciated. If I could express wishes for the next video, it would be to get such a video about server meshing/object container streaming and its current state :)
Would like to note to all the people, that a little part of quantum is already in. You know the Leather Jacket that Invictus has and how it sometimes goes out of stock? Its because New Babbage needs to be resupplied. (This is said in the video).
This is exactly the type of content that makes us backers very, very happy bunnies. Great information, with more detail than the average youtube faire. So much detail, yet understandable and in a way that forces the possibilities through our earballs and eyeholes. I haven't been this psyched for the game in a while.
Let's say you've put 1k in 2012. You basically still have Jpeg and marketing promises now. What if you would have bet on Bitcoin? You woukd be rich enough to build your own game company. Not sure if the investment was good
Incredible respect for the clarity with which a very complex system, was explained. Bravo. This builds both my excitement and appreciation even deeper. Well done to the team. @@vivthecat But from that failure we gain knowledge and we all grow. Our technology in general has advanced so much in the past 80 years. Even as a failure, imagine what this tech will do for video games going forward? :D
The simulation tech Tony & the team is working on is incredible. It does show they have A LOT of work to do still, but they've also accomplished A LOT. If they can pull it off like they want, it will all be worth it. We just need to give them as much time as we can if we want to see it happen.
Absolutely amazing video! I have to commend Tony Z not only for the content of this presentation, but especially for the way he presented it. It´s clear that he has put a lot of effort into slowing down his speech and it really showed. The technology being discussed is awesome in so many ways and it´s one of many examples of SC tech that takes quite a while to develop but will pay off massively in the end.
Thank you for the video. It is very much appreciated. One issue I would like to raise is regarding the analysis of missions at 8:50 is the assumption that because players are doing certain types of missions, that means they prefer those types. But from my experience in Star Citizen, we gravitate toward missions that are functional in the current patch, and avoid missions that just don't function well even if we prefer them. I would say that the opposite approach should be considered, taking a look at the types of missions that are not being pursued as well as the ones that are. Then compare the popularity of the all missions over time, across patches, and see if there were bugs that interfered with certain missions types. Also, if players are avoiding certain types of missions in general, see if it isn't something that can be adjusted w/o major investment. But make sure the reason(s) are understood why some missions aren't completed as much as others before putting more energy into the ones players seem to prefer.
Dear CIG.
More of these kinda things please, about other aspects of the game too. Server meshing and other networking things would be a nice start :)

- A new mission event type is created and indexed in the catalogue of pending player activities.
- A player enters the mission space and by investigative sleuthing discovers the enemy presence.
- The system automatically generates a visual representation of the unseen data with a corresponding enemy ship or enemy combatant on foot for the player to engage and defeat using the combat gameplay loops.
If an npc’s ship explodes with no players to hear it, does it make a sound? No, but the quanta can feel it.
I felt a great disturbance in the Quanta.
Imagine loosing your entire freight-fortune to a pirate-npc, then later bumping into him in a bar where he's spending it all on hookers and blow... way to twist the knife lol
And then waiting in an alley for them to stumble by for a casual shivving…
*pulls out a pistol menacingly*
That's your hookers and blow
Then it would bring some city arrest feature with tasers probably.
*losing
Being a programmer myself i can confidentily say. You guys have done a MASSIVE job. This is just unbelievibly good. Cudo's to the smart brains at CIG
Me when other people are talking: set speed to 1.5x
Me when Tony is talking: set speed back to normal 8-|
Haha yeah my default speed is 2x... had to stop for Tony
What? People watch youtube vids on sped up as a norm? :/
@@alphaprawns uhh, yes. Most youtubers talk so slow.
lol and im over here putting it on 1.25x on purpose
i hav watched too many lectures at 2x speed to notice lol
For years (since dropping close to $1k on the game) I've thought this game was too ambitious to ever be realised. I'm beginning to hope again.
2021 is looking to be a very good year
Can you imagine what this tech is going to do to the gaming industry? Virtually any type of MMO would be so much better with this tech.
@@Krieghandt if Microsoft is smart and makes a deal with CIG for SQ42 and Starcitizen and port them to the consoles (and implement their tech to their server parks), AND get insights into their tech which would help every other studio under their belt to make bigger and better games for the future. Starcitizen on gamepass would be a good solution for CR to avoid the "subscription" dilemma in the future imho.
@@TruthIsKey369 Something tells me that Chris has zero interest in making any deals with Microsoft :'D
edit: But what do I know. If its best for the product, maybe?
THIS is how you make replayability. This game will never get old with stuff like this. You'll have pirate lords that will rise naturally and areas that get dangerous, gold rushes that spawn missions that spiral into other missions.
Out of every Star Citizen video from CIG that i have seen, this is the best one so far.
Dear CIG,
We are in for the long run with you, as long as you provide us with Information like this. Be transparent and the development process will be enjoyed and supported by the community.
Thank you.
This is one of the more exciting technologies coming out of CIG, truly amazing stuff guys keep it up!
You mean marketing right?
This is some of the best content we've gotten in months. Would love to see CIG continue more like this.
Well this was unexpected. TY TONY!
CiG please put out more videos like this. We do hear alot of things about complicated systems but showing things like this encourage the player base to keep going and be willing to test these systems as they come online. Keep it up.
Videos with Tony are always fantastic, completely worth the time to watch. Thank you so much for this Tony!
Ah man this is what I needed to hear. All of this was freaking cathartic. It's ticking all the world building boxes I've been begging for in sandbox games (and games in general tbh).
This video couldn't have come at a better time, I was losing faith, Cheers Tony and the team!
same brother
same...
I agree. Why is it so hard to tell us what they are doing now rather than ...soon.
Tony Z is brilliant as always!
this man is not at the helm. all the other 599 people are still messing up
I started being a Citizen about a month ago, so I'm still new to the universe and the way the developers work and share. But it's insane how open and how much info we can get from you guys. This is the way games should be developed and shared with their communities. I have no regrets joining this journey, in fact... I'm disappointed I never took this leap of faith sooner. Keep it up, very excited for the future! O7
You would be disappointed if you did
I get way too excited every time Tony Z shows up!
every time tony speaks i find a whole new level of faith in the project
Tony Z -- The Man, the Myth, the Legend!!!
This was an intense amount of info that's extremely hard to explain . You absolutely knocked it out the park. Thank you, I can't wait to see it!
TONY BABYYYY BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
The Tony Montana of Star Citizen
I said it in 2019 and I say it now: This is insanely huge!
With that bookcase in the background, Tony should have wore a bathrobe and been smoking a pipe
Uhm you do know thats a virtual set right? His office is normally much more cluttered than that, 🤣😂🤣😂
Hugh Hefner approves this comment
I rather think of a white suit with a red necktie and a golden necktie bar, in the background accompanied with lots of monitors.
It feels like sitting in on the creators of our universe talking about how it works. We are quanta!!!
So while watching this video I feel like I'm being informed in an effective and efficient way !!!
Thank you CIG for making a video using this kind of presentation as I feel you actually may value our time as viewers just trying to get the latest information. Good job and please do more of this kind of thing.
More of this CIG, this is what we want to see. Explanations of all the underlying systems, allowing us to envision what's coming.
This is like Christmas... I mean I feel gifted, more so than I've been for a very long time!! I'm lacking words to describe this 🥲🥲
Why
@@EV-tr2qm needed this for a long time. That's what sets the game apart form me, and to see that the progresses are really coming along is a gift!
@@lemerle299 For sure!!
Tony just wow. Really just wow. I loved the citizencon presentation and how you kept the audience attention. This video is just a amazive improvement. Thank you all for quant it really is the next step to a living verse. I can't wait for us to have this. I remember listen to you chatting at both UK citizen con at the fan meetups and you know how to capture people attention.
"It's going to take more than a few sentences to explain what I'm talking about...so..."
[Takes deep breath]
You have been warned! (as if a special warning was neccessary when you know Tony Z is explaining something) GOTTA LOVE IT!!
Q: Why is SC taking so long? How complicated can it be??
A: Link to this video.
You'd still hears the kiddo's complain and yell that its all a scam.
they will draw "its feature creep, nobody wanted this in 2012". meanwhile forgetting what kind of game was pitched and what kind of man was behind the project... imo, nobody should be surprised that this project is what it is now. it is in line with what it always wanted to be.
@@SETHthegodofchaos Very well said !
@@SETHthegodofchaos i just don't see it ever finishing to a releasable product in the next ten years.
@Solve Everything I don't doubt that for a second, it more a at some point you got to release or do a full rebuild for the new tech and standards thats creeped up on you. and i just don't see this releasing in the next ten years due to everything they are doing with it.
Aww yiss a Tony video.
I love how he makes complicted things so easy to understand
All that and not a single "you know". I know he's reading from a script, but I was still impressed. Great job TZ!
Very interesting video and phenomenal tech demonstration!
So, this is why ICache was so important...
Thanks for taking the time to put together such a detailed presentation/explanation regarding Quantum. The impact of a fully functional and realized Quantum system is immense, injecting the verse with a truly virtual 'breath of life'. I am looking forward to a fully functional Quantum system more than any other feature in Star Citizen (with server meshing right next to it).
always keep
_looking forward_
incredible breakdown! This kinda scope is what truly excites me regarding Star Citizen!
Glad to know people are getting excited after 10y of dev ( :
This is without a doubt the best star citizen update video I’ve ever seen. Real stats, timelines, and an in depth explanation of how it changes and evolves.
If you have questions on why the game is taking so long send them to this video
Tony's talk on Quanta and the inner workings of Star Citizen was the most fascinating of CitizenCon 2019. The work gone into this floors me every time. Simply amazing.
I love this I can't wait for this game to be fully fleshed out.
2031 now
I have been a backer for a long time.
Exxon - green washing marketing
CIG - AI gameplay features marketing
Same bullshit, just to save the brand sympathy
Tony has the best nerd talks in the entirety of CIG. i love this man and his passion.
Odin seems a bit... godlike. If it becomes self aware, I'm coming for u Tony.
I literally was just saying “ahaha thanks for accidentally making skynet. God damnit.”
This is the best technical video CIG has ever produced. We need more of this.
Unplugging Tony from the CIG matrix to make this video cost 2 months of game progress but it was worth it.
Getting such a detailed and understandable explanation about the basic mechanics and the current state is very much appreciated. If I could express wishes for the next video, it would be to get such a video about server meshing/object container streaming and its current state :)
Finally Tony again! :D
EDIT: well done video! Love it!
This is gold. Love the format. Truly appreciate the time and effort that went into this.
Would like to note to all the people, that a little part of quantum is already in. You know the Leather Jacket that Invictus has and how it sometimes goes out of stock? Its because New Babbage needs to be resupplied. (This is said in the video).
Pretty sure they started doing this a few patches ago hence bringing about the end of the Great Laranite Rush
You basically still have
Jpeg and marketing promises now. What if you would have bet on Bitcoin? You woukd be rich enough to build your own game company. Not sure if the investment was good
@@spadecake By the same logic, I could show you how buying ANYTHING versus shares in google back in 98 is a bad investment.
Hey Noobifier - don't you DARE do a 2 minute recap of this. You should make a 10 second video telling everyone to come watch this themselves. lol
lol true!
He should make a video thst is 40:32 mins long where he just says watch the whole thing + intro and outro.
I'm ok with a recap, but it could be summarized to "Tony Z has Odin, tremble in fear and delight all ye traders."
so the noobifier vid is 38min lol
@@Grim-HEX Haha, yeah! Saw that. He did great by explaining the first part and then just letting TZ do the rest. Perfect. :)
Incredible respect for the clarity with which a very complex system, was explained. Bravo. This builds both my excitement and appreciation even deeper. Well done to the team. I know there are lot of complainers out there but for everyone of them I think there are a thousand of us quietly appreciating with awe, wonder and delight as you build this out.
We practically just got citizen-con.
As I write this 93 people "disliked" the video...... HOW CAN YOU DISLIKE THIS??!?!?!? Its amazing!! fascinating listening to what effort goes into game development!
I'd love to see when Quantum officially goes live, just like pressing 'Y' on the keyboard for skynet.
We're in! Past the firewall, local defence nets, minutemen and subs!
As a software engineer, this spoke to me. What you guys have already built is incredible, well done!
The legendary Tony is back!
This is the content i want to see on Star Citizen streams. Informative, interesting and innovative. Great job TonyZ, this entire system you are building on with your team is the game itself.
This was one of the coolest videos on SC this year.
This was surprisingly riveting. Clearly enunciated, well-explained and illustrated. Love this, please make more!
Star Citizen is not a game, it's literally an experiment of universe simulation.
just remember...most experiments end in failure...
@@vivthecat But from that failure we gain knowledge and we all grow. Our technology in general has advanced so much in the past 80 years. Even as a failure, imagine what this tech will do for video games going forward? :D
Yep a very incomplete one...
AWESOME video!!! Thank you Tony and all the crew at Star Citizen for the work you are doing!
Now THIS is interesting.
I wish CIG did more of these ^^
I'll happily keep backing this project just to make sure I get a few gems like this from Tony Z every year. I tip my hat to you sir.
I have a pretty good feeling that I'm going to be watching this video on repeat for quite a while 🤙🏿🙏🏿🍾
The simulation tech Tony & the team is working on is incredible. It does show they have A LOT of work to do still, but they've also accomplished A LOT. If they can pull it off like they want, it will all be worth it. We just need to give them as much time as we can if we want to see it happen.
Just make sure to remember that there is many types of players and just because a mission isn't popular doesn't mean it should be scrapped.
Outstanding break down! I'm happy to see that the Quantum simulation is progressing ahead nicely. Keep up the great work Tony Z and team!
Tony: explains extremely complex statistical data
Me who has no idea what is being said at all: ah yes of course
Don't worry most of the audience don't either. In the end it might even be implemented
Wow. Just... wow. This is why I love Star Citizen.
