I just watched 3 propagation videos, and yours was the only helpful one. Thank-you for going so in depth on the cuttings and explaining the nodes well.
I have Tradescantia zebrina, and I've noticed they root easily just under the surface of the soil, if you bury the stems too deep they tend to rot easily, especially if there is a lot of moisture. I've thrown mine onto the compost pile and they will start growing in it. They will also start rooting in clean water in about 3 days. Once growing in soil, the more light the better. They will still grow in extremely low light conditions, but they won't look as good. You can tell if they don't have enough water, because the leaves will start to curl and look droopy, but recover well and they like conditions too dry better than too wet. With enough surface area they will do fine in moist conditions, but rot can occur. They like containers that are short and wide and dislike deep and narrow pots. They can multiply very quickly from cuttings.
a trick that my grandma' taught me when i propagate plants from cuts is that in the hole that you put the cut i should put a few seeds of wheat or barley, they germinate very fast and help formatting new roots to the cut.
Thank you for this. No one could show could show me how to do this. I live in a West Texas town where NOTHING survives the winter. I am excited to try the Wandering Jew as I grew up with this plant. The only thing that grows where I live are weeds or succulents (sometimes), haha! Thinking this beautiful plant will survive the winter here. I want to grow it outside to replace the constant weeds I have continuously. I cam from South Texas. It's all so different, like the tropical climate you talked about. Thank you so much for this!
I don’t think this is a nanouk! Nanouks don’t really “hang” like the other kinds of tradescantia. “White Variegated Wandering Jew” is probably what you’re looking for :) good luck
I don't know if you are still looking, but I believe the variety we see in this video is Tradescantia Fluminensis "Quicksilver." I just got one today and I am so in love with it 😍
Great demo video and I like all of the information too. FYI - I looked it up and your camera is very nice. All you have to remember is that it takes about a quarter of a second to turn on or off, when going for the close ups. Also, a small flower icon is provided to you, on your LCD display. Yes, I like the wandering cuttings! Thanks.
Hey, so good to see you doing this video. I have a purple bottom side leaf and have looking for care for this plant, and walla... here you showing your plant.what would you say to caring for that particular plant? with variegated leaf with purple bottom on the leaf? Thank you. Susan.
+Susan Alexander If it's in the same family as the one in this video it will have the same care. Lots of light (can tolerate some shade) water well and let almost dry completely between watering. It tends to be a fairly fool proof plant... if you are noticing the growth seems leggy it requires more light.
Never saw a Tradescantia variegated like that! O.O Very beautiful! Pity that I live in Italy, but if I was there in Canada or in America, I'd ask you to send me a piece of that plant.
Hey, have you seen the pink one? Tradescantia fluminensis tricolor (i believe). I'd love to get a hold of that one. I want all three (white, pink, and purple).
I've never tried rooting that variety, but I would try this... take off the lower leaves, then use a disinfectant soap and clean the plant, quickly rinse it off and then let the cutting dry for about a day. Use a glass container and wash it with disinfectant soap, rinse it, use clean water from the sink and replace the water every day, or twice a day if not too inconvenient. I would also try a glass bottle with a small neck, like a beer bottle (the small opening will hold in the humidity,) then filling the water to the first node and just let the water level drop naturally. If all goes well, the roots will sense the water and naturally grow towards it.
it might wilt over time... you can pot it in soil any time... when moving it from water to soil the plant will take time to adjust... but it should take off in a few months
Spring is best but they can be propagated any time. I use the paper towel at the bottom of the pot to keep the soil from falling out of the holes. But still allowing excess water out
To be honest I don’t know.. I’m not a rose Guy. I don’t think there would be an issue. Mint is fairly shallow rooting and the rose should have roots a little lower…. You might need to maintain the mint a bit so it doesn’t outcompete the rose. Some mint can get fairly tall
I have not very big Tradescantia Nanouk and accidentaly I broke one stem in half, so I put it in water, it rooted so now I have two cute plants! Although, the broken stem that remained won't grow up again. Any ideas that can help so it can grow up again?
Any tips if you do break a stem? It's not completely detached, but not sure how to make sure that one doesn't die. Should I proactively propagate the broken stem while it's still healthy? This video is super helpful! Would love to see an updates on how your cuttings grew. (Know the video is a bit older!)
i would remove that piece and propagate it... once the stem kinks it limits the flow of plant juices and the area beyond the kink will eventually die if left alone
I have not propagated Chinese evergreen... but usually just chopping off the head and either rooting it in water or directly in the soil works... if the stem (trunk) is long... you can cut those into 3 or 4 inch sections (as long as there are 3 or 4 nodes ) lay them on their side in some damp soil or sphagnum moss... they should send up new growth in a few months
07/01/2016 Yes i spoke with you last year regarding the beautifully white and green wandering jew, please tell me what the shipping cost is from Canada to NM and see if that is cost effective or not? Every time I watch your video i quest to have a 4' starter plant from you as i am not a plant propagater😕 but I can do the root starter in water. So when you can at your earliest convenience please let me know the cost to ship. I want some of your beautiful wandering jew plant so badly. I cant find it anywhere not even online. The others are very tiny leaves (green & white) not robust as yours.
i have a question, i have a tradescantia spathacea tri color (purple, white and green)....but mine is growing like a stalk, it has gotten so large that the very base of it cannot support the top of it so i have 2 sticks to stabilize it....but can i cut it down like you have done to yours?
+Barbie Pilato Sure you can. This plant group grows easily from cuttings and will grow from the original stalk easily unless the stalk is very old and woody... but new growth can still occur. at absolute least you can take cuttings and revitalize your plant.
If the pot is stable/heavy enough place it in a highish position and let the plant cascade downwards. Bits often break off easily if pushed against but these can be additions to an ongoing propagation/multiplication of your favourite WJ. I let my green/white variety with purple underside dry out completely before watering again, from below. I guess they must absorb some moisture from the air because they seem impervious to drought
06 /09/2015 Very beautiful plan you have are you willing to sell & ship clippings from your plant? Interested in buying some of your more lengthier plant clippings please I've recently gotten into the wandering jew plant thing and have ordered a variety of clippings from the Ebay website, Although I prefere to put my clippings in a clear glass & water. They are rooting quite nicely and I'll soon transplant them to soil.
Myra Clark if you are in Canada I can send you some... sadly the shipping costs are very high. if you pay that.. you can have some cuttings. but it would be cheaper to buy plants at the store i'm sure.
I HAVE the green one and the purpule one and the mixed one greenand purpule and i wish to have the green and white and i have the one vraity with like hairy white
You might need to increase the light... if you are glowing these from leaf cuttings... the new growth will not have the yellow edge... if you want to maintain the line you would have to do rhizome division
I have tradescantias species tradescantia pupurata, tradescantia, virginiana i have one hybrid this hybrid is tradescantia virginiana x purpurata and you name is trdescantia spider wort púrpura is very beuti but your result is more big flowers and have paphiopetalum roots
I have a wondering jew (Tradescantia zebrina) and I haven't been able to kill it although my mom has killed hers and I have had to save it... a few times. :D Some people just don't have green thumbs. Love the video.
My confidence is brimming, and I want to move beyond sansevierias, aloes, agleonemas, pothos, syngoniums, philodendrons, and dracaenas, and I stood staring at a "wondering jew" at Wal*Mart Garden, and I asked him, "should I buy this plant?" [JOKE] I stared at the 'Wondering Jew Plant," remembering having to pull those out as weeds when I was young, and couldn't bring myself to pay $12 for a hanging basket of it.
John Biggles The cuttings did amazing.. This plant grows from cuttings very easily. they will even root in a glass of water if you don't have a pot for them right away.
When ever I propagate this plant, the plant rotted either soil or water. What should I do. I really want to propagate this. I have Nanouk, Tricolor, this one you have, and other species. but cant propagate. I was just successful with Zebrina
PlantzNThings Thanks, just checked it out. Great to know that they're doing well! I followed your tutorial and took lots of stem cuttings from my plant. Can't wait to see them grow! Great channel btw.

i guess it is pretty off topic but do anyone know of a good place to watch new tv shows online ?
@Vicente Dominic I use flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Emmitt Jesse definitely, been using flixzone for years myself :D
@Emmitt Jesse Definitely, I've been watching on flixzone for since april myself :D
@Emmitt Jesse Yup, I've been using FlixZone for years myself =)
I have one zebrina that has become 4 other pots..... oh my I do love this white and green look on his plant.
That is one pretty plant. I love the variegated variety too.
Thank you :) There are sooo many nice varieties of this plant.. and it's wonderful that they are so easy to grow.
You could probably use make up disk pads for the bottom of the pots not sure I haven't tired it yet.

I water mines and it seems to help it it’s growing by leaps and bounds
very helpful - thank you! right now I have my cuttings in a cup with water. is propagating in soil better?
I’ve never seen a nanouk with no pink!!! Now I’m obsessed and on the hunt for something that doesn’t seem to actually “exist” 👀

I need to take a camera class I think.. I'll keep the 1/4 of a second in mind when i'm shooting. hopefully more close ups will be in focus. Thank you
Love from Hampton, VA

+Pople BackyardFarm Thank you :)
Very helpful video! I’m about to chop my pink tradescantia to propagate 😬. Have you tried propagating in water? Does that work also?
Yes I have, Tradescantia root easily anywhere..lol... water or soil...
@@PlantzNThings Thanks for the tips. My cutting are rooting nicely.
How did your plant grow after you did this?
Hey, have you seen the pink one? Tradescantia fluminensis tricolor (i believe). I'd love to get a hold of that one. I want all three (white, pink, and purple).
No, i have not grown that one.. It's very pretty.
I have some Tradescantia Padilla that I've been trying to root in water to no avail. I think I might just stick 'em in dirt and be done with it.
I think that because these plants are mostly water... if you try rooting them in water they will try and rot.

Hey I have a question, if you leave a potheos in water too long will it wilt. Can it be saved if you put it in dirt thanks.
it might wilt over time... you can pot it in soil any time... when moving it from water to soil the plant will take time to adjust... but it should take off in a few months

I only grow the Jewel Plant.

Tradescantia is a noxious weed in Australia. It's everywhere, absolutely everywhere.
+BurningFeetMan I can imagine it would be...lol... its the perfect climate for it to run a muck..
Real nice presentation I liked. This is a nice plant.

My stems are getting mushy and dying, whys this happening?
this is weird... are you growing them in soil? or in a glass of water?
